Look to actual world history and in particular the centralization of power in European monarchies over the period from the high middle ages to the early modern period. Kingdoms like France did indeed see a rising concentration of state power as they consolidated their culture and holdings. It's still nothing like Rome.

The Roman world was fundamentally different in a real sense, as experienced by real people "on the ground," from the world of the dark ages and beyond. The institution of the Roman empire did survive for a good part of the transitional period, but by the 5th century the economic, demographic, and cultural changes in western Europe had changed it irrevocably to the point of becoming irrelevant. Odoacer could have proclaimed himself Emperor in the West, but instead ruled Italia as a king (rex). Why the change?

The concept of claiming "roman-ness" still held quite a bit of prestige. Had somone consolidated, say, everything from Iberia to Gaul to Italy, then claimed to be the new Western Roman Emperor (not just HRE), that would've been quie a bit chunk of prestige for him and his line.
The centralization of power is precisely what I'm talking about; the only difference between Roman Empire and Kingdoms is that RE gets special government options to represent its government being extremely centralized (iirc; might be wrong because haha who the fuck plays vanilla). The culture was, while not 'dead' in the sense of utterly obliterated without trace, extinct in an everyday sense (ancient pagan lore and gods surfaced prominently in Renaissance art, suggesting that they likely never 'went away' - Jupiter is a fucking angel in one painting). The religion was long gone, traces left in Christianity to be sure but generally just gone. Obviously you're not quite the Roman Empire and really just taking the name by "restoring" its territory, but then again one could argue that Honorius' Rome hardly bore resemblance to Hadrian's Rome.

I guess it comes down to the definition of "Romaness" you accept. In my opinion the Roman Empire had lost its essential romanness by the 3rd century, so the "roman" rump state that persisted beyond that isn't a good guide for what a "restored" empire might look like. But if you accept the empire of late antiquity (even at its strongest, say Theodosius' empire) as properly Roman, then perhaps you could also accept calling a new Mediterranean empire as a roman successor. I don't see how it is any more of a valid claim to Romanness than the HRE though (or the Russian Empire or the Rum sultanate). Ultimately it's just a different kind of ruler aping a famous name for a completely different kind of political/economic/military entity.

Why do you find war in the east overwhelming? Just give orders one army at a time. Also in turn 1 set yourself goals that aren't simply Leningrad/Moscow/Stalingrad. Have a goal for each army and how you want to attain them.

Basically work from the top down, from the grand, down to the single regiments. Rather than from from the bottom up and then missing the woods for the trees as you try to micromanage every single tiny aspect of the game.

As to WitW being less or more overwhelming, I would say it is more overwhelming, ground units are simply more intuitive than air units, if only because you are likely familiar with the way ground elements operate on some level (be it from something as banal as company of heroes or WW2 war movie no. 189), whereas you are most likely completely unfamiliar with the airforce, and WitW focusses a lot more on air combat.

The North American Federation has formed, Russia is about to form the Eurasian Coalition (originally just Eurasia but I thought that sounded cooler and I want to have a BF2142 EU vs PAC type showdown), and China has cucked the shit out of India and conquered quite a bit.

My plan is to also annex Egypt, the Baltics, Poland, and the Balkans (liberating Constantinople of course). I think I can get most of those via sphereing and including in the EU if they take the right decisions and have the right techs. I'm number 1 in military but China, North America, and Russia all have liike 700 brigades compared to my 300.

In my UK playthrough I started in 1946 and have united the Commonwealth and it's essentially a three-way standoff between myself, the US, and Russia so yeah that's probably the best nation to start with. Just make sure to give up none of your colonies, makes it a lot easier to stay in the top 3 gps once China starts amassing industry score.

Here's a map of the world in my EU game.

The major power blocs are myself, the North American Federation, Russia, China, and India. Japan is secure in 6th by about 1k points but isn't close to India who is in fifth. Myself the NAF and China are above 10k score. The last 2 GP spots constantly rotate between Brazil, Indonesia, Iran, Ukraine, and Turkey.

The black Xs are where I plan to expand too, the other Xs I've marked are coordinated with the GP that has either sphered or puppeted them. Most of Africa is sphered by India or Japan but I didn't want to label each one.

The Japan country will stop any attempt to gain power as a daimyo. They start off stronger and richer than you and will always be stronger and richer than you.
The best daimyo is the orange one in the north/center that starts with a gold mine but again, if you consolidate any sort of power the emperor will rain on your parade.
