Understandably, they had very little trust for the Zulus (or any other natives, they were in almost constant conflict). I generally advise Italy for new players, big enough for you to get your teeth into the meat of the game, but not so big that you get overwhelmed. It is also a land focussed country, you can focus on the navy and dominance in the med, but there is no real need for you to do anything naval related at all (unlike a country like USA or Japan).

It is a good game in the sense that it did what it set out to do. It set out to appeal to the EU/Vicky crowd since that was and still is their larger playerbase. They recognized that EU/Vicky with its simpler design and less focus on military strategy and tactics sold far better. HoI3 only really appealed to a niche of "military nuts".

It however fails horribly at being a successor to HoI3, the game plays more like EU than it does HoI.

The diehard HoI fans wanted more fidelity supported by a better UI to manage it with (like Grigsby's series, which has an excellent, albeit boring, UI), however they got less fidelity, simply because that is what sells.

First off, I'd suggest moving your cap to an HRE province so you can join, suck up to Russia as much as possible as theyre a huge asset as an ally when you're Prussia, and focus that mana on getting back up to tech, mainly militarily. Prussia is OP for military, if you can get a new unit upgrade before others do, it's an xboxhuge advantage for rushing

I mean you dont have to use the AI to do the fighting for you if you dont like it. the planing bonus still works even when the attack order not given. 3 also had AI you could use if you had wanted

things like area defense orders are really good things that you can use like getting all your pacific islands garrisoned as japan or letting AI do the calculation and handle supression on occupied areas. and again, you dont have to use those things if u want to do them yourself.

and I dont think being able to chose where to annex or who to puppet when war ends turns the game into EU. Same with being able to create factions and break railroading by choice.
I really hated it when everyone randomly took lands when war ends or USA joining soviets

being able to chose which division gets which tanks/guns/kind of anti tank guns also increase the focus on military in my opinion
