I want to implement alpha shadows in a flexible way. I see two works to base ideas of off:

http://amd-dev.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/S2008-Filion-McNaughton-StarCraftII.pdf
and
http://www.crytek.com/download/Playing%20with%20Real-Time%20Shadows.pdf

Mostly looking at the crytek side using a shadow map and an alpha map, it makes sense but it doesn't handle the case of casting shadows onto the translucent occluders themselves which I have tried to explain with the image. So you can either have the translucent objects appear full bright in the directional light, or have the first occluders become dark which is also wrong.

Are there examples of systems that have solved this? I can imagine do many passes after sorting the translucent objects, or even crazy things like depth peeling. Maybe you could do (very) sparse voxel ray tracing? It would at least remove the worst artifacts at the cost of resolution.

Please help.

>>

I've been drawing since I was a kid. obviously my first drawings suck, but I was never allowed to go outside the house so I had time to practice even though I wasn't intending to be good, I just wanted to waste time and distract myself.

my point is your first drawings will always suck but that shouldn't discourage you because that happens to everyone who starts out.

>>165331079

Is there a downside to having every Unity asset in its own assetbundle? That way you could only ever load what you needed and nothing more.
>>
>>165331079
>>165331098
You only draw photographic reproductions from photographs or from life. You render them completely and accurately as you can including the backgrounds.

Start with tones only at first and then after a while mix in color works as well. Do a mix of all the things you eventually want to draw plus humans, animals and hard shapes.

Over time also mix in doing fast images as well as long, rigorous images.

Try to do minimum 2 complete images daily.

Never draw cartoon or styles while you are learning. Especially not anime. Even if these things are your goal.

6 months and you will be at a level where you can produce things you image or need and move into other areas. Beyond that it is just searching for the next thing to improve. There are ways you can tweak this to work with the issues you are having, but it is a sort of basic 'can't go wrong' way.

So a month ago someone was talking to me about GOAP, I ended up developing it in Unity for a school project.

What's the best way to set this up for a game like Rimworld/DF?

I thought about a basic class that would have the actions "GoTo, OpenDoorLvL1, Consume, Wander, Flee, etc" just basic things.

But I'm having trouble figuring out a good Goal system. For example if I want someone to work for a couple hours then entertain themsevles. Should I just drop the goals of working out and add in the entertainment goals? Or should I just decrease the priority of working? And increase priority of sleeping when nigh time?

Also as an example, how would you handle having a job "Wood worker" which can collect wood, or manufacture wood into lumber. You have 2 workers, and 2 work stations. You obviously want one to get wood while another turns it into lumber, so you do you just calculate

Priority for Lumber: numberOfLogsInStorage * .1 + numberOfWoodCutters * 5 + 20 - numberOfLumberInStorage

Priority for WoodCutting: -numberOfLogsInStorage * .1 - numberOfLumberers * 10 + 30 + numberOFLumberInStorage * 2

Assuming you have infinite trees and 0 wood or lumber.

The first guy gets a priority of 20 for cutting lumber and 30 for chopping wood. The 2nd guy gets 25 for Lumber and 20 for chopping wood.

Is this reasonable? Is this overly complicated or will I be happy I did this in the long run?
>>
>>165331589
Yeah I was just reading about asset bundle compression, apparently LZMA bundles you have to load and decompress the whole bundle to get something from it, but LZ4 (new in 5.3) you can just read the specific chunks for the asset you want. I was upset to learn that everything in /resources is loaded at runtime, I thought it would be smarter than that and only load when you called Resources.Load()

"Color and Light - A Guide for the Realist Painter" by James Gurney (HIGH quality scan)
Oh, man. I really liked this book.

Anyway, I still mean it. Drawing is how you get better. Drawing the things you need to to progress forward without drawing the things that will set you back. You can, of course, read, but it in no way should impact Practice Practice Practice. You will pick up more of the little skills you need to draw far faster by proper practice than a million books.

Even in your first few pictures you will finish it and go "oh, I could make it more accurate by doing this and this" and you will apply these to the next drawings. Unlike going with these books where you see people become bogged down in detail and in comparing themselves to a master.

you posted this with good timing

It is usually better to adjust the priorities. I would only explicitly set a priority to zero if it becomes impossible or something the character would not logically have any desire to do. One way to do this is based on moods, etc. Working and sleeping is something where there are some interesting developments that can happen, like maybe you have a guy who needs money really badly and is working so much he barely ever sleeps.

For now I would recommend avoiding complex calculations for the priorities until after you have enough in place to have a good feel for the system. They can easily become hell to keep sorted logically.

I don't get what this wants from the first object input. Is it the parent class it's asking for? But I don't have access to that from this class which is why I am casting. Why am I so dumb.

I'd simplify it with states for more unusual events, like putting out a fire. Trying to balance a bunch of needs + take into account edge case, extreme circumstances sounds difficult. Are you the one that originally pointing me to this when I was working on my other game? If so thanks, I enjoyed this way more and was less tedious.

Right now that AI just goes to various bushes, collects foods, and sleeps, but I want to expand it.

I want to avoid a really complicated mood system because I want to have higher number of population than RW with a the focus being a little higher level.

But I can do a light implementation. When you say moods to you mean "happy sad depressed distressed lonely ecstatic" or "wants money, stressed from work, hates elves, etc".

So basically more similar to RW mood +- system, or DF's thought system?

You need an "options" object to cast to

>>
>>165332568
See this is what I am confused about. So cast to options is a unique thing, so it's clearly doing something with the options class right. I want to put references to options variables in set target widget, which it's doing, right? But then I need to put an additional options thing into the object? Or there needs to be like, literally an invisible actor or something with the options class in it.
>>
>>165332247

Basically I have a Goal, Action, and Condition base class. As well as a master planner class (this pretty complicated generally.
Goals have priority's (how much they want this be done) and Actions have Costs.
So if you're goal is to get food you would have these actions with these costs:
Walk 0
Kill animal 2
Cut up animal 2
Pick berry bush 3
Cook Animal 1
Get food from fridge 1
Eat Food (varying)

So he would naturally try to use fridge but fridge has a precondition of (isWithinRange) and Walk has a POST-Condition of (isWithinRange) so the AI would go Walk -> Fridge.

The fridge also has the preconditions (fridgeExists, isReachable, hasFoodInFridge) that the AI would check.

If these weren't satisfied he would go to a berry bush (Walk -> pickBush) if there were berry bushes that existed, reachable, had berries to pick, etc.

Finally he would just hunt an animal and cook the food if that had it's preconditions matched too.
The reason eat has varying is you could base it off his hunger level. Eating raw food has a cost of 10, so it would be better to just cook it which would have a total cost of 5 instead of 14. But if you're starving, maybe rawfood only has a cost of .5, so now you're villager would rather eat the raw food now rather than wait and cook it.

My preconditions/postconditions are just string the planner tries to match and the condition class is a just a holder of the string and a type. So in unity I can have the condition (DoesExist, GameObject) and (InRange, True), etc.
>>
even convert my things to inherit from a baseclass so they're easier to work with

How bad of an idea is it to create an alpha map in photoshop of a shadow, throw that on a plane, and line it up with the object so it looks like that object is casting a really nice shadow on the ground?. Now what if I did that for everything? That won't cause any kind of problem, right?
>>
>>165333101

Cool.

>>165332864

Okay, so you have a base class cube. You can have specific cubes in the world. To find out a cube's position or volume, you need to cast to it, because these are properties of a cube. When you cast to cube, you need to tell it which cube specifically you want to reference to because each cube can have a different volume or position.

So you have a base class options. You can have specific configurations in your game. To find out a configuration's screen resolution, you need to cast to it, because these are properties of the options. When you cast to options, you need to tell it which settings specifically you want to reference to because options can be saved with multiple configurations.

Guy takes too long to get to his points, so here's my summary:

1. Don't follow a "just keep practicing everyday" mantra. It's too nebulous and vague to help you out.

2. Set a goal so you have a yardstick for progress.

3. Get feedback. Take it in stride. Some people are very colorful with giving negative feedback. Read between the lines. Find some takeaway with what people say, good or bad.
Don't fall in love with your work too much. Acknowledge the flaws and move on.

4. Don't stay in your comfort zone but don't jump off too far either. Stay just a little bit outside to compel yourself to improve.

5. Find a forum that matches your skill level. Participate in their contests/competitions. The competitive nature can help you improve. When you've outgrown them, find another forum that now matches your new skill level. Then join their competitions. Be the very best that no one ever was.

6. Go at it by small increments. Break down your shortcomings to their individual parts so you can easily improve them. The video mentions 6: color, anatomy, perspective, composition, design, and storytelling.

For example, if you have a problem with anatomy, work on it in isolation. Practice with making art that doesn't have an odd perspective, in grayscale so you don't have to worry about color, etc. and just work on the anatomy. If you have a problem with drawing fingers, then just draw lots of fingers in different poses until you're used to it. etc.
>>
>>165333472

No, it's interesting. I'm thinking about it. I don't have anything specific to say. Except maybe ask if it wouldn't try to kill an animal before picking a berry bush?

voila, you are now an artist!
>>
>>165333517
Because It takes the whole path not he individual actions.

Basically the path for berry bush is
Walk -> pickBerryBush -> Eat -> goalSatisfied (2) while animals is
Walk -> killAnimal -> cutAnimalUp -> cookFood -> Eat -> goalSatisfied (5)

Each action has preconditions like killAnimal has inRange and produces corpse cutAnimalUp needs a corpse and produces rawFood cookFood needs rawFood and produces edibleFood and Eat needs edible food.

I hope that helps and glad to help out

Okay, I get it. But in this instance I don't want to have multiple.. instances of options, I just want to be able to modify the MAIN options class from another class. I mean that must not be something people usually do I guess so it's likely not the best way, but I don't see a need to make a copy and then modify and use that copy, because the parent class is all I need to work with. Especially if I am going to be saving and loading options and using it over several levels where it needs to be consistent, doesn't that make the most sense?

There's lots of object types. Your circly is a wildcard so it accepts lots of object types. Unfortunately this means promote to variable has too many options to choose from so it won't do it automatically. Did you make it an actor? A struct? Enumeration?

Save worrying about specificity for when you are at a good level of drawing. Your own skill will reveal most of the paths you have to take.

I know the genre is dead and nobody in the world cares about them anymore and yadda yadda but I don't care about actually selling it or appealing to anyone.

But I'm a little bit retarded.
Are they actually 2D or 3D?
I could never tell, they use sprites, but on sort of a 3 dimensional plane or something, or at least that's how it looks.
Also could I get away with just watching the tutorials on "how to just like make game" or do I need to know programming to make something like this?
I can't imagine this being a difficult genre, all you need is just a basic level line up and you've pretty much made the entire game, just switch the terrain and units. (or maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about, which is quite possible.)

Isometric? As long as you keep the logic to a basic 2D grid you can draw it however you want with no real issues.
>>
>>165338128

FFT is totally 3D with sprites.

The levels are 3d Models and you can rotate them just like you'd expect to be able to in 3D space.

Something like Tactics Ogre or FFTA is completely 2D. The levels and viewpoint are fixed to accomodate this.

Both can work. There are benefits to doing it 3D.

That's what I thought, but when you rotate the plane it doesn't just shift from 1 angle perspective to another, it sort of like "smudges" into it in a really weird way.

>>165338226
I see.
So, the level itself is 3d space.
But are the grids that make the plane also 3d objects or just sprites?

>>165338721
A cast is a conversion. Usually in your managed languages casting most often happens between references, in which case all you're really doing is "changing" the type of the reference (and the cast will fail if you do it incorrectly). Casting can also be between number types.

You should avoid casting between reference types because that means you're not doing subtyping correctly, you're breaking Liskov substitution and thus invalidating the entire reason subtyping exists. Casting from a type to its supertype is generally implicit and it's okay, but going the other way is bad.

>>165339356
So why do you use it then to get access to classes if it's a conversion?
>>
>>165339619
You shouldn't use it that way. If you need to do something different depending on the concrete class, you override a method. Reason being, if you have downcasts you are now closing off the system to anything other than a few subclasses of the superclass which makes no sense as far as subtyping goes.

How would you go about animating a turn based game in Unity? Moving a character to attack one of multiple units somewhere on screen, attacking, then moving back. Would you make different "run to" animations for each potential enemy position? Would you move a character to position via script, play the attack animation, then move them back?

Trying to think of the best way to approach this.

you just answered your own question. you just need ways to check if they arrived at their movement destination, so you can start playing the attack animation at the right moment, then checking when the animation has finished so you could start moving them back to their original position

-laser traps start glowing before activating the laser

-changed the position of the spikes so you can't touch them from the side
-remade some levels

Hopefully these changes made the game a little better.

There are some very valuable lessons to be found. Surviving without a hit being one of them, or post portem for DOOM. Engines of Play I'd recommend as well.
Then you get talks about designing for VR, apps for children and others that are just not applicable to your current situation and skipping those is not a loss.

I've watched quite a few of them myself. Here's some:

>How to Survive in Gamedev for Eleven Years Without a Hit
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmwbYl6f11c

>You're not special, nor is your game, and you'll never ship a hit. That's the uncomfortable reality for most of us. And the sooner you can come to terms with that, the sooner you can figure out how to survive as an indie.

>Engines of Play: How Player Motivation Changes Over Time
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lg2GndSat1E

it's about mapping your game's target audience and player psychology

I like these two talks because not only were they insightful, both speakers were pretty funny and knew how to keep your interest, it wasn't boring watching them at all even though they were pretty long

Pure, shameful defeatism. I'm capable of realizing that most people will never "make it big" (myself included), but to encourage others to chart a course for mediocrity from the outset is unabashed sabotage. It's possible to hold yourself to realistic goals without overextending your resources, while still aiming for the top.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXTOUnzNo64

From the guy who made Gunpoint. Practical tips, though if you come from an Agile dev background, you'd already be familiar with most of what he says. But it's inspiring considering this was his first game, he worked on it solo, and he learned programming on-the-fly with this.

The speaker sounds incredibly pretentious and high-and-mighty, but he has good points. so if you can tolerate his way of talking, there's some good takeaways here.

This is from a Unity video, but this talk in particular is about game design in general, nothing specific to Unity.

I'm getting really pissed that there is no official answer to the bouncing ball between 2 aligned boxes issue in Unity.

I know Unity's choices and why it happens but it still pisses me off that you have to hack your way around it. Which fucking engine does not have a solution for a simple ball rolling between 2 fucking boxes seriously.
>>
>>165352491
>>165352050

Animations should be quick and eccentric. A walk/run cycle will look very boring if you make it natural.

That's why so many games use exaggerated movement.
>>
>>165352578
Right. Exaggerated movement like breathing and such, which is what was on display up there.
>>
>>165352491
>>165352578
Jiggling isn't the problem. The problem is applying to everything.

Try applying screenshake to every breath of every character on screen, see how that dynamic action wins over boring stable screen.

The thing ran out of stamina and is breathing heavily for a few seconds? Cool, immersive. It's breathing like it's about to die all the time? Annoying.
>>
>>165352820
>Screen Shake
I'm 100% with you on screen shake I think it is terrible 99% of the time.

It's really a shame that it gets thrown around so much as something that makes your game "juicy" because all it does is fuck around with the games playability and aesthetic.

The guys onion might be a bit too much for just a simple walk/idle but its definitely better than a lot I've seen posted here.

Look at morrigan hand on the last frame
The pixels don't represent fingers. They represent a pose of the hand. Details that would be used to represent fingers are omited and only the shapes that make you recognized that specific hand pose are used
You imagine she has fingers because hands have fingers and because on the other frames her fingers are recognizable so they induce you to imagine fingers in the frames where they aren't described because they wouldn't just disapear from one frame to the other right?

Guess what? Unity doesn't have that despite using box2d. This is why sometimes I get so fucking pissed at them for integrating things wrong or not at all.

>>165353467
Put 2 boxes in the scene, perfectly aligned, add a collider, have something move between the two.
* If you use a box, sometimes it'll get stuck.
* If you use a ball, sometimes it'll bounce for the same reason.

Yes, this is ridiculous but this is a common issue that has no official solution in Unity besides "roll your own or combine them lol".

Anyone know how I can expose this block to the Unity inspector? [SerializeField] doesn't seem to work. You would think the inspector could access a value from the getters and modify them with setters while the game is running.

I could always just expose the private members themselves, but I may want to do special things when getting/setting these values later.

you were meant to put that inside your csGuidedCheck class. the isLocked is referring to the:

public bool isLocked;

that you have in your earlier post. if it can't find it, I don't know what the hell you're doing.

>>165359579
[SerializeField] is only for fields (i.e. variables of a class)

if you want something fancy, you'll have to learn how to make custom inspectors. see the docs regarding editor scripting

>>165359223
this is why you need to go back and learn.
dude didn't explain a damn thing.

First off, OnTriggerEnter is 3D only. You'd use OnTriggerEnter2D if you were using Box2D collisions.

Second, In order for this event to occur, you need to set the enemy's collider "isTrigger" to true. The player object needs RigidBody component attached and of course a collider too.

Third, the enemy needs a way to determine what object it's colliding with.

OnTriggerEnter(Collider other){
if (other == player.collider) //do stuff

"other" is a parameter name which references the enemy's collider.

there's probably more im missing but you're not getting the full picture when some anon just tells you to copy/paste their stuff.
>>
>>165359906

If you are new to programming in general, you shouldn't. GM is way better documented and has more tutorials available. Good return could be hundreds of thousands over the course of years.

Initial sales are always the big numbers everyone looks for but you can consistently make sales if your game is good. Everytime theres a discount I get a kick in sales numbers on steam.
>>
>>165364384
I say 100k because you're going to only see about 50-65% of whatever sales you make on Steam. Steam takes 30% and then the government will want its cut.

$55k just replaces one person's income - what you want is to target expansion. You probably want to hit something like 80k in a year if you want to slowly build up to hiring other people etc. Games take time to make and if you're living 'game to game', that's like going month to month on your paycheck - all it'll take for you to fail is a single mis-step or poorly timed release.

Who was I blaming? My life circumstances are pretty conventional.
I live in an area that costs a lot of money to live in -- but this is where the jobs are for the games industry and I'm even living outside an easily driveable distance of the majority of them to further save money. I'm not getting your point.

There are people who can live off of 28k, sure. I'd wager that's not most people and even if it was - it'd still not be comfortable living conditions.

In my neck of the woods if someone was getting paid $35k/yr, they'd have a hard time even finding a place to rent thanks to most apartments around here requiring you to show you make 2-3x your rent. At $25k it'd be literally impossible. There's no place around to even rent at that income unless you're specifically shooting for low income housing by the government -- and the waiting list on those goes for months and months right now.

I am in the suburbs. I don't buy top-dollar brand name things. I buy groceries at Costco at bulk and my budget for groceries is something like $65/wk for two people. It's only because I managed my money well that I even have savings to live on for multiple months while I seek a job right now.

I'm guessing the suburbs you're living in are outside a small city. I live in the suburbs of one of the largest cities in this country. The fringe part of that suburb, even, in an apartment we spent five months looking for while trying to find the best unit we could for the lowest price that wasn't built in the 50s and whose electricity costs wouldn't hit $100/mo due to bad insulation (which is a common problem around here).

Hell, I made an excel chart to compare electricity plans and compared them down to the hundredth of a cent to find the best price we could get on our average electricity usage - and I unplug shit from the walls when it's not in use just to save those couple of dollars a year.

I am quite far from uninterested in where my money goes.

I have about 16 years experience programming at this point

>>
>>165373358
It's pretty hard for some people to even produce code that works, let alone be "efficient," either from a design, speed, or safety/bug standpoint. That being said, coding is a skill like any other. Basic stuff is easy, complex stuff is hard. Depends on what you do.
>>
>>165373924
Well either you're trolling, or the error is obviously still there and you can paste it in.

>>165374084
Typically:
They are unable to solve any problem that is not trivially simple
Or, if they can, it will take them 10 hours instead of 10 minutes because they never got a firm handle on the fundamentals
They don't know how to debug a piece of code to figure out what the problem is. Instead, they will (randomly?) change some lines of code for hours until it seems to work
>>
>>165371796
Holy fuck why is this so hard. Layers don't work Crossgates don't work, the state machine doesn't work, nothing works.
