I personally don't feel like DeS really aged that terribly. And I'm saying that without having played it first, or even second.
Looking at the mechanics of these games, things like PvE combat, equip load, blocking and rolling, buffs, spells, and the multiplayer aspect have stayed pretty much the same since they were introduced in DeS. The majority of characters that appear in the following games even have their roots in it.
Sure these things have been expanded, but the basics are all there.

Obviously the series has improved when it comes to varieties of weapons and different movesets, having more builds available, and bosses being less silly and all over the place. Multiplayer also has covenants in later games too, which helps make things a little more interesting.

Despite that though, I ended up enjoying it a good deal and I can't attribute it to nostalgia since I didn't play it till after 1 and 2 and I can't attribute it to console shit since I play most games on PC.
Just personal opinion, though, plenty of people would agree with you and say it's aged.

What makes the games age is subtleties like control responsiveness, movement acceleration, graphics, etc. that all contribute to a sense of "clunkines". These are all things that get better across all video games with time as they become more sophisticated. DeS and DaS are both dog-shit ancient in terms of that kind of subtlety (worse than most of From Soft's PS2 games even). But DS2/DS3/BB have significantly improved in those ways.

It's little things like how in DaS your character basically instantly turns whenever you change direction, instead of having a progressive movement and animation to the turn, or how everything (rolling, attacking, etc.) is either "on" or "off" with no middle ground, all stagger animations are the same, there's only 3 different roll animations, etc. DS2 added a lot of wind-up animations, making movement speed progressive instead of completely based on benchmarks, and more subtlety to make it feel less arcade-y and more like you were actually controlling/moving along with the character. BB excels at this, along with DS3 as a result of sharing its engine.

In a way, that makes DeS seem incredibly dated, but like an arcade game, it's sort of dated enough that you really feel that mid-2000s RPG clunkiness. DeS and DaS is about on-par with the original Kingdom Hearts in terms of how smoothly or awkwardly user input is translated into action, and that's what dates it.

Both DaS and DeS have dramatically reduced complexity in basic movement compared to most other From Soft games, and that's probably due to Miyazaki. The games he touches usually have the least complex player feedback, despite being better in most other ways.

KH1 to KH2 clunkiness is shockingly similar to DS1 to DS2 clunkiness. It has to do with adding animations between attacks, creating legitimate combos, adding wind-up and cooldown animation transitions, giving characters momentum when moving, tightening hitboxes, and making a shitton of mechanics progressive (% based) instead of analog (on/off).

You could say the same about comparing MGS3 and MGS4, though that's like comparing DeS with BB in how much of a leap was made.

I'm not comparing KH to DS on quality, just clunkiness. And when it comes to clunkiness in 3rd person melee RPGs, they're fairly similar.

If it's any consolation, something like FFXV (which takes a lot of inspiration from KH's mechanics) is super clunky compared to BB. Games that do this best are shit like Bayonetta, where everything flows subtlety and never feels analog or like they forgot to refine or add animations.

But this is all also because smoothness and refinement of combat is the number one priority in hack and slash games, but in RPGs it's not at all, because game experience isn't a dependent on it.

The dodges in DS2/3/BB vary progressively instead of just swapping one animation out for another. They might look the same but the fact that speeds, distance, and wind up times vary a lot more makes them different mechanically, that's my point.

I'm aware of those mechanics being around for years, I think I just confused the whole 'dated' aspect with 'having archaic ideas in the gameplay'. Obviously that's not the issue.

I'll be honest, and it's completely personal opinion, but arcade-style animations or lack of fluidity detract so little from games for me that I rarely even give them a second thought.

Going back and playing the PS1 armored core games after being used to the later PS2 titles is mind-blowingly frustrating, especially since they don't have analog support.

I didn't count ninja flip because it's a different animation, not a variation on the basic roll. I'm not saying "DS1 is bad because it has fewer variety in its rolls" because that would be dumb. Because technology gets better with time.

I never played anything older than AC3, so I can't personally relate. I would assume all the older games are a bit of a novelty at this point, though, regardless of how they control.

I think in the end this is just something that by all rights should feel very archaic to me, but I have never minded for whatever reason. I have no doubts that the PS1 AC games would get me to feel differently, though.

ZoE 1 or 2 is piss-easy compared to most AC games. They're both great mech games, but for totally different reasons. Do not go into AC expecting it to play like ZoE.

The closest AC game to ZoE is Armored Core For Answer. It's also the simplest and easiest in the series, you can pretty much just hop in and blow up everything without really thinking.

Armored Core 3 is probably the best in the series for beginners. Armored Core Last Raven is the best if you want to git gud, as it's probably the intentionally hardest From game ever made.

Enchanted is just a more intense version of Magic. It puts even more scaling on Int than Str/Dex and gives it even more magic damage. It's only better if you are a pure mage with absolutely no str/dex

If you think about how 3 pans out, the overwhelming majority of people, places, and groups from other games are either dead, never mentioned, or falling apart. The things that people loved got fucked from beginning to end.
I honestly think it was intended to get veterans to feel like there is absolutely nothing left to save. That the only choice that makes sense is to let the world die.
I don't know if I'm thinking too hard about this or if it's too meta, but I genuinely believe the game is telling you to let it be finished. The Corvian guy in the DLC even says something to that effect.

What's the point of being embered in DaS3?
In DaS2 you can be invaded hollow or not, and being hollowed also took a % of your total HP so one wanted to avoid that. In DaS you got a lot of bonuses for stacking humanity and being hollowed prevented the player from kindling a bonfire.
In DaS3 there's literally no downside for dying, no actual need to use embers (unless you are a faggot who needs summons). I'm missing something here?

Blood Starved Beast isn't even necessary to beat at that point of the game but you can do him if you insist.

I beat BSB as my second boss and it was kind of a pain honestly. Work on the timing of your gun parries and use rally as your primary tool of getting back health to save vials for the second phase.

To be fair, Sir Alonne is a lot faster than Fume Knight, has a grab that boosts his attack power, and also has the same "stop everything and use a stupidly powerful attack on the guy who's slowly chugging Estus" mechanic. He just doesn't hit nearly as hard, but they sorta cancel out.

He's also at the end of a pretty long gauntlet of bullshit that there's little way to skip outside of summoning phantoms to tank for you. At least with Fume Knight, there's a bonfire right outside his boss room and you can walk along the inner perimeter to avoid the flaming armpit enemies.

I would have to agree with Raime being easier.
Raime may hit like a truck and leave few places to heal, but his attacks are slow and telegraphed pretty clearly. He also has a massive blind spot directly behind him that is easily taken advantage of.
I would say Alonne gives even fewer opportunities to heal while being much faster and a little harder to gauge.

You can be summoned anywhere in the world, at any time. Doesn't matter where you are.
The problem lies in your level and how summoning as a blue actually works.
I've heard low levels have slightly better luck getting summoned.
I don't know the specifics behind how the game chooses which blues to summon, but I do know that some people have no trouble getting summoned and other people will never get summoned, ever. I've heard people say it's tied to account age, but I have no idea if that's true or not.

If a host is just sprinting through the level, the only things you can really do are try to find a way to cut them off (easier in some places than others) or annoy them with something ranged and pray it causes them to get fucked by a mob or make some kind of mistake.
Just sprinting after them almost never allows for a hit, since rolling will slow them down far less than your attacking will slow you down.

That claymore can carry though the entire game easily so don't be afraid to upgrade it. If you're already at blighttown you can go back to firelink shrine through a set of elevators to the right of the bonfire. A lot of people at that SL farm souls at darkroot forest if you bought artorias' crest. Be mindful that you might be invaded if you're human as it's a PVP hotspot.

Weapons in ds1 go up to +15 and you should really make it a point to upgrade as much as you can whenever you can. I usually enter blighttown with a +6. Also, once you reach the bottom, you should go human after touching the bonfire. Get some free humanities and a f*n str weapon

Dark souls isn't hard, it's punishing. The game always gives you the tools you need to overcome something before you face it. Almost all of your deaths are because you fucked up, except for the rare engine issue (less rare if you use dsfix to completely uncap the framerare) and one particular forced death. In case you haven't already, download dsfix, dsmfix if you want to use a mouse, dscm and PvP watchdog. Links in the pastebin.

You're already a sorcerer, why? What's the point? Simple infusion is also completely worthless. Trust me, I've tried to give my mage 2 simple rapiers and the regen was still such trash that I could only cast one flashsword every 15 seconds. You also need 5-10 more INT if you want spells to do any significant damage, especially at 120 where everybody is a fucking super saiyan with endless stamina.

If you have a direct connection to the Gravelorded, you can make your way over to see your BPs in action via being summoned by them or invading them. You're not Gravelording in your own world, but you're in the world of the person whose under your Gravelord effect. Gravelording really wears off if you die, move to a new area, and go offline. You're still online and alive in the same area, so the curse doesn't really wear off. There's a sort of timer on this indirect Gravelording, like around 10-15 minutes. Dragoncrest shield simplifies that fight a lot during first phase, have that and the only thing to look for her reaching out and grabbing you.

Probably half of my attempts as a phantom were, yes. I like farming that little area and now that I'm 50-something I put the sign near Dancer as I don't think I can help near Vordt.

I got pretty good fire resist, but the shield is a good point. I do much better surviving than I did, but that grab is nasty and I don't always see it.

She has an audio cue before she does that, pay attention to that, if you're admiring her ass when she does it, it's easier to notice than the animation, as from behind it's virtually indistinguishable from the backhand.

Also don't rely on the shield in second phase, not only does she deal magic damage aswell as fire damage, she also breaks trough shields easilly, so just keep distance to her when she's winding up to dance.

After that, it's up to the host not to die, if they do, it's not your fault.

PVP is solely there as another mechanic to make you wary of your surroundings and die, it's not about being balanced combat, or a test of skill, it's not, it really can't even be.

Arena pvp and red soapstone are just token additions to give the air of some balance or skill based contest, but the problem is, the weapons and skills are really difficult to balance and pointless to balance for a game that is basically an RPG with a gimmick.

In DS3, the problem is that the invasions are stupidly skewed in host's advantage, when it should be the other way around, because the point is to ruin the day for someone who is just trying to advance in the game. That is the only point.

Getting fucked by invaders, getting fucked by hosts, the whole point is to be the one doing the fucking, but the game isn't balanced towards that.

So, the chances of you doing the fucking isn't fairly balanced, it's unfun for hosts with a fuckton of phantoms, it's unfun for invader who has to deal with all the phantoms, and in a lot of cases renewing supply of phantoms.

Sure, beating the odds is fun, but it doesn't happen often. Because the game is balanced first and foremost around pvp being done to fuck with pve and secondly around weapons and skills.

Not him, but I enjoy the very high amount of freedom in it. In other games where you pvp you're usually thrown into an arena or something, but in these souls games you can do whatever. You can try to fight, then run away and be a faggot when you start losing. You can hide in the level and throw actual shit at people. You can pretend to help people then betray them.
There's also things like ganks, gank spanking, and DS3 especially has a lot of skirmish situations where you're essentially 3v3 just fighting wildly, that shit is pretty fun.

For the same reasons I enjoy PvP in games like WoW, world pvp that is, even though the mechanics are kind of trash for it. Not to say Souls combat mechanics are as trash as WoW, but they're not perfect for PvP either.

You're a huge fucking autist for asking people to explain why they find something fun, you know that? If it didn't have some sort of appeal, there wouldn't be this many people doing it.

No, the point of a fucking invader is that it deters people from summoning all of the time and encourages only going human when necessary for a very hard boss fight. The system accomplishes that. You LITERALLY want it to be possible for a fucking invader who is STRONGER THAN YOU AND HAS THE ADVANTAGE OVER YOU to come into your game and randomly fucking kill you? That's fucking retarded.

Invaders already have myriad advantages:
*choosing the area to invade, therefore knowing the area much better than the host, especially if he hasn't been through it before

*having a build specifically set up for PvP whereas everyone you are invading has a PvE build

*having equipment upgraded to a higher level than the invaded target's equipment

*being able to go through NG++ and have higher tier rings and 15 estus flasks at +10

An invasion isn't just successful if you go and kill the host outright. A successful invasion is any invasion where you manage to annoy the host and burn down his estus reserves so that the boss fight is more challenging. Think of yourself as the area's most challenging enemy. You can't expect to win a 1v2 but if you take away 5 estus from the host or manage to kill the phantom, you've done your job.

Ds1 pvp has depth but no width to it. You need to make good reads on your opponent, but you're really only making them on one front, backstabs, which makes the pvp go stale quicker than it would in more competitive games. The amount of practice vs the amount of enjoyment you'll get is a sketchy tradeoff. Don't get into the pvp unless you ALSO like running through the game and memeing around, otherwise it won't seem like enough. Had I just been handed an ideal DS1 pvp build from square one the way you just start off with characters in most pvp-only games, and done only pvp, I'dve dropped DS1 like a brick because it just can't compare when you measure it by those characteristics exclusively. So if you're asking "is this a fighting game?" the answer is no. I consider pvp to be the real endgame as far as longevity goes, but I still wouldn't treat it like I would an actual pvp game.

I haven't any experience with millwood, but as far as "axes that hit like a fucking truck" go I've used raw dsa with lightning resin so I think I get the gist of it. Unless i'm under-rating the reach, you can space it with straightsword R2 pokes. Even while twinking, if I see a good antitwink with raw ass, I switch off my axe and use raw astora for the moveset in spite of the fact that I'm doing like double damage with the axe.

The axe does have the advantage of a twohander bonus since it's pure str, meaning you can invest even less, but twohanding means you're putting your parry tool on your back, and even if you are running a minimalist 26 str build, you're just getting closer and loser to raw ass range. I've used the butcher knife (which is trash compared to the mill, this was pre-dlc) and dsa with friends, the guy with the SS always has an easier time even if he can't win trades.

I like the feeling that the "epic" boss music gives me. When Vordt enters his second phase and starts changing around as the music gets faster and more epic is a very memorable experience. This is one of the reasons I consider Vordt to be one of the best earlygame bosses From has ever done, coupled with his awesome visual design.

I see literally nothing wrong with the chorus and the epic boss music. I feel like it does a lot for the gameplay, and the themes are different enough that it doesn't get samey.

This also makes bosses that don't have epic soundtracks stick out more, like Gwyn in Dark Souls 1 or Maiden Astraea. If all bosses had similar tracks then it wouldn't be so memorable.

As someone who generally likes things like Armored Core more than Souls, Dark souls 2 is infinitely more fun to me than Dark Souls 1 or 3 was.

Dark Souls 2 is ~80% of the refinement but with twice the gameplay customization and opportunities to optimize. DS1 is way too heavily reliant on reaction time and whatever stat you chose to use, and DS3 is way too reliant on the weapon you chose and having to practice that moveset, plus roll spamming. DS2 offers the most flexibility on a single playthrough in terms of changing up the gameplay experience and figuring out new ways to optimize and get better without repeating the same techniques over and over again.

I'm not even saying chorus is inherently bad or something, it's just that the music is way too heavy with it. If it had less chorus, the impact of chorus would be heightened.

There are some examples of the chorus not fitting with the boss you fight though. Executioner's Chariot is fucking dumb. You're running along a race track killing skellies and necromancers while the chariot makes its rounds and all the while you're hearing chorus and really hyped up epic music. It's most noticable when you're literally just at the lever waiting for the chariot to crash into it and it goes

Bloodborne's atmosphere is extremely overrated. With the exception of the DLC, Upper Cathedral Ward (where your screenshot is from) and Cainhurst, the entire game looks the same and has the same feel. While that atmosphere is really, really well done, it ends up overstaying its welcome.

It needed more color, instead of making everything the same washed out shit. Some washed out levels are fine, but making the entire game like that is just boring. We needed more things like this pre-release screenshot.

Demon's Souls is leagues above Bloodborne in terms of atmosphere, because it manages to have different kinds of atmosphere and feel between its different worlds and areas within those worlds, instead of sticking to one for the entire game.

I don't think it's that often that the vocals add anything to the songs in the game. The two exceptions I usually think of are Gwyndolin's theme and the theme for Ash Lake. Pinwheel works, too, but that's probably because it's just vocals in the background, not a chorus.

Well, you would need to make every weapon/build have more options than they do in souls games. Like, in a fighting game characters have like a couple dozens attacks that they can use at all times and several mobility options. You might want to do something like forward+r1 - different attack, r1+l1 - different attack, r1+r2 - different attack and so on (well, if you decide to keep general control scheme that is).
You might also want to speed things up. Most attacks in fighting games are completely unreactable, and for a reason. At least you want to have a universal quick attack option for close range interruption.
Also a good idea would probably be a viable block that you wouldn't have to sacrifice anything for. It should be an always available universal option, i think, and have 100% reduction, or at least 90%. Shields would upgrade it, but they shouldn't be necessary to use it. Might also add something like an instant block, which would be sort of easy parry with lower reward.

Armored Core can be more reliant on reaction time than dark souls but it balances it out with other forms of player agency like much more in depth customization, preparation, etc.

Dark Souls isn't Devil May Cry. It's not a hack and slash, and if it was, it would be a terrible one. The appeal in dark souls is more than just the reaction-based rolling and attacking, it's also in the customization of the gameplay experience through the combination of items and stats.

I'm complaining about things like how rolls, infusions/buffs, and backstabs trivialize most of the tweaking and optimization possibilities in Dark Souls 1 and 3, it's always better to practice rolling, backstabbing, and use the best buffs than it is to experiment, in those games.

But in Dark Souls 2 they tend to complement the customization instead of overwhelming it. Things like AGL, separating stamina max from stamina recov, fact that all stats (int/fth/str/dex) have the same payoffs for infusions, that any weapon can be dual wielded, etc. these are all mechanics you can use to your advantage and reaction-time based mechanics are never so overwhelmingly powerful that they make them pointless to optimize for the others.

It's definitely a flawed game, and probably worse than DS1 or DS3 for its time (and definitely worse on release) but there are things it does that make it a much more fun experience for me, and I imagine other people.

I finished DeS and DaS on a melee build, DeS was sword & shield while DaS was a single sword.

I'd argue that the Nightmare levels (even outside of the DLC) have a different feel and do not look the same as the other places you visit.
I remember the lighting changing over time as well, there's evening, sunset, and night if I remember, which at least kind of helps lower the washed out feeling.
I'm by no means arguing that Old/Central Yharnam and Cathedral Ward don't feel very similar, though.

Also you should make block a bad choice in most situations. Like, if you block you get disadvantage in frames, and if you keep blocking you either get guard broken or miss an unblockable or something. Roll should also be not that good, probably like 92 agi 50% DaS2 roll, but with more recovery.

Dueling is my favorite thing to do in Souls games. There's something special about theorycrafting your build, running it through the game and then testing it against other people in a fair 1v1 situation.

People complain about unbalance and bad netcode but they do not tarnish the overall experience. Souls game PvP is really unique in its perspective, and how both your build and your skill determines the victory.

I have enjoyed PvP in all Souls games to date, though Bloodborne's was my least favorite.

Pure caster (60 att 50 int 30 fai) that challenges himself not to rely on spells that fly in straight line and hit. Because all other spells are essentially melee spells.
Unfortunately you need quite a bit of expertise in magic and DaS2 to properly do it, but it still can be fun. Just look up magic vendors.
If you don't want to challenge yourself just go 50 att 50 int and infuse whatever weapon you want with magic. Use both pyro and sorcery.

Figuring out how to get into the cathedral was a bitch, though, and then I got stuck in the fucking painted world, Guts build on a blind playthrough in that place fucking sucked. Couldn't block wheel skeletons without a shield, exploding assholes that chew up your health every time you hit them (no ranged except 2 fireballs and a shitty crossbow) -- it was brutal.

Which game?
In DS1 and DS2 it can be both, doesn't matter too much. Though it's distinctly better as a quality weapon in both.
In DS3 you're gonna be at a really shitty low AR if you want to use it pure str.

It does work on a str build, just not very well and it's usually outperformed by similiar weapons.

Any of the magic paths (Fire, Lightning, Magic, Dark) are viable in dark souls 2, and you can use infusions to make any weapon scale with those stats. Dark Souls 2 is the best game to do magic, even if you are pure melee.

Fire is average of Int+Fth
Magic is Int, and can scale physical damage through enchanted path
Faith is Fth, and gets the best damage type (Lightning) for PvE
Dark is the lowest of Int+Fth

In terms of a gameplay style that is really unique to DS2, making a hex and melee build would be something you couldn't really do in DS1 or DS3 as effectively.

Pure str zwei is pretty good as it weighs so little. The added poise and defense from armor and vit are pretty sweet too. I unironcally do better with a pure str zwei than with yhorms machete.

It's effectively strength in DS2. You gain ~35 damage from 40 points of dex but you gain ~100 points from the same in strength. Dex is only worthwhile if you hit the first softcap for strength.

Quality in DS2 just means "level up strength to 40 before you put points into dex" instead of "level up strength to 50+ and then maybe put points into dex".
