I miss when the games had these epic shounen anime kind of stories. I find it hard to really care about what's going on in the newer games because it doesn't feel like there are any stakes.

Shadow was honestly a game that gave the player too much branching. Sure it was neat that you could go on a bunch of different paths depending on what missions you did, but it resulted in only having 6 levels per playthrough, which as little as only 1 boss depending on the route. What they should've done is have the player go on every level in each playthrough, with only three final bosses/endings depending on how many hero or dark missions you did.

Shadow is one of my favorite characters but I seriously think it would have been better If he had stayed dead at the end of SA2. His death had so much impact and then seeing him again in Sonic Heroes with little explanation was kind of shitty.

I think the level design in Shadow was probably the worst of 3D Sonic. People often complain about speed and loops being "scripted" in 3D Sonic, but Shadow's levels really had no flow or rhythm. The whole idea of Shadow being Silver's father was banded around before that, but Lancelot being Galahad's father in the original Arthurian legends fueled that fire.

Lancelot never did the deed with the Lady of the Lake in legend, so no idea why Amy being related would be supported by that game.

People taking Shadow being Lancelot and Silver being Galahad being a hint that they are related in the Sonic canon completely forget (or ignore) the fact that Gawain was Arthur's nephew, which by their logic would make Knuckles Sonic's nephew.

Through all my in-depth studying on the nature of The Rival, Shadow-Archetype, Evil Counterpart, and so on, the line seems to almost blur, and characters that are really the Knuckles almost get treated as the Shadow or Metal Sonic, and it's kind confusing and weird.

That basically is Knuckles, I guess the main difference is Blaze tries to restrain herself unless she gets really emotional. But really, nobody outside of the comics has given a shit about giving Knuckles a proper character since the Dreamcast died, so the difference between him and Blaze or him and Shadow gets blurred a lot.

Knuckles' traits of being hot-headed, strong sense of personal responsibility, and difficultly getting along with most people are used as ... I like to call them 'counterforces' to Sonic's traits. Like, the inverse opposite or whatever it should be called. Like, Unstoppable Force meets Immovable Object, Airbender versus Earthbender(/Firebender? I guess it works since Avatar did it), Chaos versus Order. Knuckles, as Sonic's Rival, has traits and abilities perfectly tailored to clash with Sonic, counter Sonic, and/or "stop" Sonic.

But with Shadow, and even Blaze, many of these defining characteristics of Knuckles 'bleed' into them since they also serve to 'oppose' Sonic, but they clash with Sonic in a completely different way. Shadow and Blaze are both used as alternate incarnations of Sonic, whereas Knuckles is used as the one guy that can "beat" Sonic.

Blaze's similarities with Knuckles are well recognized, but she ISN'T a "Knuckles", she's a "Sonic". She is the 'hero' of her world, with a special (and kind of undefined) bond with 7 powerful gemstones, and the story of Sonic Rush highlighted these traits as a parallel to Sonic's. Parallel Dimensions... Parallel Emeralds... Parallel Heroes. And yet because of this, Blaze is also treated as an 'inverse' to Sonic, like an 'opposite', thus having Knuckles' traits bleed into her (hotheadedness, responsibilities as guardian, loner, etc.) while still being a 'Sonic' (bond with 7 emeralds, the hero of her world, fast and agile, her shoes, and an Eggman [although Nega was later retconned into being Silver's Eggman instead]).

I think he kinda was taken seriously. Most of his character is built upon him being the 'Knuckles' to Ben 10's Sonic, hence his name being "Kevin 11". Ben 10 has a special alien watch-like device that allows him to transform into 10+ different alien heroes. Kevin 11 has the ability to absorb anything, thus allowing him to absorb and replicate the powers of Ben's aliens and use them interchangeably in conjuction with his own mutant powers, adding up to the "11+".

I just thought of something, with Nintendo's new direction being to unify the home console and handheld market what does this mean for Dimps?

Emerl/Gemerl (referring to them as the same character), is like Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow combined in terms of role. What I mean is, ... When Sonic first finds Emerl, the Gizoid pretty much becomes Sonic's Apprentice, like Tails. Through training with Sonic and the others, Emerl got stronger and learned everyone's techniques, especially Sonic's, and eventually he grew into another Sonic Rival. During that final battle at the end of Sonic Battle, Emerl was pretty much a Tails/Knuckles/Shadow role fusion. A Sidekick (Apprentice, really), Rival, and Shadow all in one. ... What if Tails became a rival for Sonic?

I blame the abundance of cutscenes related to the villains. A good example is Lost-World vs Heroes.

Where in Lost World there were a fuckton of cutscenes letting you know about every little thing the antagonists were doing, from every detail of their plan to the slightest of farts they made.

Compared to Heroes where the most you got from Eggman was that he was going to fuck shit up and challenged sonic to stop whatever it was.

Not knowing what the Master Plan is, is what puts people on the edge of their seats imo.

what makes emerl special is that he is the link between you and the game but unlike link from zelda (unless maybe toon link) he isn't devoid of personality and is made up traits from all the other characters in the game. making the end where your forced to fight and destroy him all the more heartwenching. your being forced to essentialy destroy yourself after all that bonding, fighting and growing only to helplessly watch as emerel bite the dust contemplating the situation. Battle in my opinion has one of the best narratives in a sonic game (retroactively)

Why should we care when Sonic Team clearly doesn't? Just leave the canon as "loose at best" and you'll sleep much better at night. It's the same thing with Mario. I don't know why Sonic games HAVE to be all linked together. They're not exactly MGS in terms of story and world building. (I know not the best example but you get the idea.)

Now if we're talking about fanon, then that's another story. Wanting to patch holes and link games together into one overarching plot is fine and can be a nice exercise in creative writing. Isn't he working for GUN in that game? It's been forever since I suffered through it but a lot of Shadow's current background and comrades only really mean much if you've played the last few installments. Sure, it was meant to be to a reboot but that sounds like one of those concepts that fell through early, like SA1 being an RPG. When you make a reboot you have to balance fanservice and reimagined major scenes with the assumption that you're drawing in and introducing a new and unfamiliar audience to your series. 06 doesn't really do that, at all. In fact, it's probably the least approachable sonic game on that front. I kind of felt the same way about Boom where this new setting isn't explained to set itself apart from the mainline stuff. But that doesn't really matter anymore since the TV show isn't trying to take itself seriously and they won't be doing anything like Rise of Lyric again.
