/egg/ - Engineering Games General - Formerly /svgg/

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Bunker down edition
previous ded: >>164727051

The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.
Whether or not a game belongs in /egg/ is a case by case matter, however games that would belong in /svgg/, space voxel games general, are automatically considered /egg/

WebM for retards:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):
>Algodoo
>Avorion
>Besiege
>Chode - Children of Ded Earf
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths
>Homebrew - Vehicle Sandbox
>Infinifactory
>KOHCTPYKTOP: Engineer of the People
>Machinecraft
>REM
>Robocraft
>Robot Arena 2
>Scrap Mechanic
>SHENZEN I/O
>Space Engineers
>SpaceChem
>StarMade

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Minecraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Mexican scam artist one. With the shitposters. Fuck off.
>Hearthstone, found in the hearthstone general, /hsg/, not in this general.

Information about these games, such as where to get them if they're not on steam, trailers, /egg/ conquered/hosted servers, and other shit can be found in this pad:

So i´m just starting to get into factorio ( bought it yesterday), i automated red and green research packs and i´m trying to automate blue.

trouble is, everything is starting to turn into a mess.

I´m wondering if i should tear it all down and re build from the ground up?

At what point do you usually start restructuring?
>>
>>165041535
I just kept building more and more complex with only a few revisions until I unlocked robots and got rid of most of my conveyors.
>>
>>165041535
I've played so much that I usually plan for the future for my setups so restructuring is minimal.

When I was new though I just kept adding shit to it. It might not be efficient but it makes beautiful spaghetti

Also despite me forcing it to stop moving with blocks, it still thinks it's moving at 0.3kmh.

What the fuck, have they always been like this? Does everyone just deal with it when using wheeled vehicles? I'm playing on dev, I thought they just fixed the wheels? Is there some secret to it or what? I tried various suspension settings, didn't help.

In the rotor or the rover base? Yea the rotor is controlled by timers that just reverse velocity and lock it once it finishes raising/lowering, I expect it to work fine in single player honestly.

Spawning another one fixed it. Think I turned it into a station via b - 'station roation'. I thought it just aligned it to the planet, obviously not.

I'm suprised and impressed this thing works with no gyros or thrusters, it can even turn at 100kmh on reaonably flat ground.

with a connector its slighty reduced, older version used a landing gear, and that disconnected the rotors for KEEN reasons... and the older model was like this.
>had to convert the webm twice to reduce its size.
It had a "physical" lock wich was way worse, because it played with rotor limits, and it was not totally safe, back then i tried to avoid anything, landing gears, connectors and merge blocks, then connectors started to "werk" and stuck with them.

stopping as in decelerating or as in using parking brakes?
Parking brake doesn't work, wheels will ALWAYS move unless you put down another wheel sideways and set it to max grip, and drop it down when you need to park.

If instead it doesn't stop fast enough chances are you aren't getting a good grip, which means you need to tune your suspensions, setting strength, dampening and offset so that no wheel is spinning without gripping.
If the vehicle is unbalanced you can't set all the wheels in the same way way obviously.

If your grip is good and it still isn't stopping fast enough, congrats you have found out why everybody regrets wasting time in big wheeled vehicles.
>>

wheel brakes are shit, find other ways to stop it...

>>
>>165062620
I can slow it/sort of stop by accelerating backwards. Using space (seems to lock wheels or brake) I cant completely stop, Using handbrake on ANY sort of hill ( >3% incline) it just rolls forward/back.

>>165062764
will do, probably just chuck an atmo in forward/back directions for stabilising

its steering lock override, not the block toggle
>>
>>165063147
Your wheels are spinning, I'm mostly sure about that.
Space engages the "handbrake" temporarily, I think it brakes at 100% power (but still the grip you set), so it should brake faster than accelerating backwards if your wheels are tuned right. But it has the same problems of the handbrake, meaning that if you want to stop completely using spacebar, you will not because it will keep rolling if you're on anything short of a superflat surface.
To stop completely, you need to accelerate slightly backwards, that way wheels will actually try to stop you.
Then just raise your wheels and have your ship touch the ground or something, it's the most effective way to park without using the perpendicular wheel or thrusters

You can merge different parts to make more complex geometries, but there aren't any proper bendable materials. You can make a reasonable approximation by putting multiple hinges between 2 items and modifying some properties, but aside from some specialist uses I don't really do that.

Back to the drawing board, again. But I think this was for the best. The latest one (8 sec) has the good sustained fire of the original slow-ish turret (11sec) and it's about 90% as fast as it's ammo-starved, 'rapid' firing replacement (7sec) so we have the best of both now.

By the looks of it, there's a functioning editor for maps and drones alike.
Assuming that said player-made items can be used (that fundamental gameplay elements have been implemented), it would be a suitable Greenlight candidate.
Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised to see it on Steam before this summer - regardless of the Kickstarter's outcome.

In all likelihood, pipes will work just fine. inb4 some retards talk about limited throughput
Further down the road, you'll likely want/need a railway for other purposes, so it'd make sense to get started now.

the scaling will be the thing, keep it as it is, or increase it to make large ships easier to make, or both like spengos with large and small structures.

as from the water simulation, its harder than making tonks or wheeled stuff?
I know a tire model is kinda complicated to make, but mod the existing space floating with the drag and float calculations seems more predictable than a wheel, but also depends how the physics model is done, can be simple as an arcade, complex as a simulator, or as shit as spengos.

Do you think there needs to be a large and a small size? With a thickness slider between 1cm and say 50cm that covers pretty much anything doesn't it?

The water simulation is one of the weak pints of ftd, the water removal effect is very crude and metal floats if it's a partial block.

>>165154674
They're so weird I can't even figure out what I'm looking at in some pics. are they particle cannons or something?
>>
>>165155205
the issue with simulating boats is that you're applying heavy drag to the ship, but only the submerged part of the ship and more in some directions than others, ignoring the actual hydrodynamic effects which i'm sure FTD doesn't actually simulate anyways

i think FTD solves this by calculating the surface area of the cross section of your ship from different angles and then using these areas to define the drag in different directions, applying less drag for the respective direction per sloped tile you have on that cross section, and i'm pretty sure partial submersion is simulated by calculating how much of the box dimensions of your ship is submerged and applying the friction to the center of the submerged portion of your box dimensions

i am a physician

Rem dosent have sizes on its sturts, but it does in the armor plates.
A slider for the dimensions of the sturts is also an aproach, or maybe not.

Im thiking between a tubular ribcage structure or cross plates like this pic i found. in that case, both the plate thickness and placement plays in the integrity, i dont know if its the same in Rem.
>>
>>165158234
That pic is a little more complex than what I had in mind, even a basic engine with girders and plates would keep me happy rong time. Pretty much exactly what rem is doing but not gay. Let the players make their own engines, guns, AI, etc like in ftd and maybe throw in amo management either with conveyors from spengos or something more extreme like factorio

>They're so weird I can't even figure out what I'm looking at in some pics. are they particle cannons or something?
Yeah, I love particle cannons.
The jet is a missile ship. It has 60 4 fuel tank missiles that travel so fast they burn all their fuel in 300 meters. It flies over things, dumping all the missiles when it gets directly above them. It also has a 100mm frag gun for taking out AI after the missiles peal the hauls off of ships.
The two beside of it my satellite and transport/construction ships.
The little ship in the middle left is the meat and bones of my fleet. A super short range particle cannon set to piercing with a few flak missiles.
Beside that is my tiny sub with a shock particle cannon for busting ships with week underbellies.
The jet beside that is for early game. It has 4 downward facing CRAMs. Almost the entire inside of the ship is CRAMs.
Beside and below that is a laser defense ship: it still needs work. It's cost/performance is low.
Bottom left is two 1400 rounds per minute frag guns with a hugely powerful EMP particle cannon in the center. It can one shot most small craft. Also a few cruse missiles.
The bottom right is a retrofit with 200mm HE warheads shooting at 900 rounds a second with pretty much no accuracy as well as a moderate laser. It helps against the Scarlet dawn and I don't intend to use it for anything else. It also has a bank of large EMP missiles.
In between those two is a refinery that sends fuel to a space station [not pictured] where I store all the fuel and material reserves.
>>
>>165160734
You should make some webbums it's hard to picture some of these in action from just your description, like a jet with a backwards battleship turret or these weird looking boats.

No, I mean, you could build it; I'm just saying it would take quite a bit of engine power.

It's the whole reason I built it. Stupid lasers shooting my missiles out of the air, so I though, 'What could I do to get missiles past that shit?' Well more faster missiles is the brute force solution, but that increases costs. So I made cheaper missiles that can't go very far.

I'm getting ready to pack up and leave Omricon (it was kind of dumb to go there after Akua since there's not much you can get there that you can't get on Akua) and head to the ice/lava planet next. I think I'll make an underground base in the side of a mountain and use this to bore it out.

Anyone got experience making underground lairs and/or this HV? The Ladybug is fucking beastly and this looks like a bigger, badder version.

Can confirm all of this to actually be a thing right now... sort of. Thickness is more to reduce physical shock from explosive rounds, but will play more of an effect in the future.

Sure, let me just throw out everything and start over as FTD: Not Nick Edition.
just kidding, boats are feasible in the future but there's a lot of shit that we'd need to do and consider to make them anywhere near as complex as FTD ships. "Buoyancy" can be assigned to parts, which is to say they apply a force straight up when submerged, but there wouldn't be any airtight compartments for quite some time, and drag would be... difficult. Some bounding box, possibly, based on ship dimensions, with modifiers on angled parts or something.

>>165202478
> image what would happen if they were able to put a all of they're energy into it.

Basically this. Funnily enough, we're considering tossing together a Robot Arena game with REM's builder with the interest of creating a product for people to buy to support the rest of development of the REM "engine". The REMgine, if you will. We already have the parts modeled to do it, not considering weapons. we got bored one day while attempting to figure shit out. So I played some RA2 DsL 2.2 and went from there.

>So much emphasis on player-created maps
Gives me the impression that they don't have many stock maps. Which may not actually matter, but it's sort of a red-flag. It also gives the impression that maps don't actually change much, and the game will feel super samey no matter which map, and that can kill games fast.

There's one thing I think this game needs to be good; matchmaking. Matchmaking being the one thing Robocraft got right, it is absolutely essential in just about any modern arena game. I'm all for servers and custom maps and mods and shit, but there needs to be a way to just press go after building your vehicle. It helps make a "Vanilla" rule set that people can gravitate to, and allows new players to focus on playing the game first, and checking out alternative rules and mods later.
>>
>>165239797

>Matchmaking being the one thing Robocraft got right

It has no matchmaking. Like at all. It literally just grabs whoevers available at that exact moment looking for a match and puts them in one with no regard to their experience/skill level or robot they've built.
>>
>>165239938
I mean, it's rudimentary caveman matchmaking, but it still makes the match. I suppose when I said "got right", what I should have said was "had the right idea about". The point I was making was that allowing players, both solo or in a group, to just queue for a match is pretty much the expected norm nowadays. The only reason I mentioned it was that matchmaking generally requires official maps to work with. Adding in community maps to the official rotation is fine, of course, but that still requires stock maps beforehand. With how much they are raving about their map maker, I have fears they'll assume letting player-owned servers take it all is fine.

Nothing would make me happier than this game proving me wrong.

I didn't actually say having servers and community-made maps are a bad thing. I just think it's a mistake to bet so hard on the community making maps and servers for itself. I watched Unknown World's NS2 make the same bet and lose. They eventually added in a pseudo-matchmaker but it was late. Ideally, both would be available from launch, featuring an official matchmaker with custom servers (and maps/mods/etc) on the side.

Made a custom survival start at the site of Easy Start Earth's base (removed it). There's some of each component in the cargo and a rover base I posted in the last thread behind the camera.

It's a bit easy to start off with but the guys have low attention spans and never really played survival much so.

I think it looks nice.

people who want a survival play a survival game...
Spengos is not a survival, is build fight crash the game and wait a month if the shit was fixed.
Then the fix break something else and keen do the backpedaling if enough redditors get mad about and fill both that place or the forums

Its been like that for years, in some cases making the "survival" unplayable.

Well it's not strictly 'survival'. They don't want some Minecraft/Don't Starve shit. They/We just want to make use of how 'surivival' mode gives you a lot of different incentives, like mining and cargo craft etc. Without it they'd just build a borg cube with guns and never play again.

The game may be all over the place but its still fun as shit with your good friends. Perfectly manageable too on a small scale given you know what you're doing.

I've owned the game for years, I know the drill.

>overdesigned tacticool tech-porn sci-fi flamethrower
And highly impractical to boot.
A liquid projectile falls apart midflight (see aforementioned flamethrower), meaning it'll quickly lose velocity due to friction.
I'd also imagine such a projectile would lack the necessary hardness to penetrate any significant amount of armour.
>>
>>165270120
There are better ways to bring up that game, but it's obvious enough that you fail to understand that,
>>
>>165274642
You actually don't need hardness with a liquid bullet, HEAT is basically that and it's the most effective thing against non-spaced non-reactive armor.
>>
>>165274730
Huh?
>>
>>165273514
>cargo craft
I've never once felt like I needed one.
The only transportation you need is getting ore from a mining site to the base where it's refined and turned into components.
Given that a mining vessel likely has the necessary storage for the ore, how would a dedicated cargo craft fit in?

>>Is there any /egg/ that lets me design a Thanix magnetohydrodynamic cannon
oh fuck no. So you know how we don't have very many /egg/s with simulated water because water is hard to simulate? Adding in magnetic and electrical effects adds an extra fuck you to the problem.

One of the reasons we don't have fusion today is because magnetohydrodynamics is so hard.

liquid metal pumps, which are used for such things as pumping molten sodium through nuclear reactor, are basically railguns with liquids. They can't reach very high speeds though because the flow becomes unstable.

It will be difficult to make it so the jet doesn't disperse in air.

>>165263209
FtD(and the real world) does have guns that shoot liquid metal. The HEAT rounds shoot a jet of armor piercing molten copper.

>>165266150
>>overdesigned tacticool tech-porn sci-fi flamethrower
Wasteful is a better word. It would be able to do the same job as $10 HEAT round only in a much more impractical manner.

Now if you really want tech-porn sci-fi flamethrower look no further than the NOPE-thrower.

A NOPE-thrower is just like a regular flamethrower, except in addition to a tank of fuel, you have a tank of chlorine-trifluoride(ClF3) aka NOPE. When you spray you just combine the two. With ClF3 you have no need for a flame on the end, as ClF3 is hypergolic with damn near everything including cloth, wood, water, asbestos, and people. Oh and guess what? When it burns it makes toxic corrosive gas. So we can burn, GAS, and dissolve all at the same time!

Because we provide our flamethrower with it's own oxidizer, our flamethrower can work in oxygen-less environments like SPACE. Shit, since ClF3 is hypergolic with everything, we can probably get away with just spraying that and piss down concrete walls and stuff.

here's some more about ClF3:

>>165274909
Well you dont *need* one, but there's some incentive. How about if you have two bases? Want to move stuff around thats not connected while the mining ship is out doing stuff?

These kinds of games are for making things for the sake of it, often, which I personally will do anyway in creative. But it's nice (and helpful for those who are less otherwise inclined) to have *some* incentive, even if it's weak or barely existent.

on planets they sorta makes sense

>leave big rolling base on a plain
>take quary cargo transport to the site through rough terrain
>detach the miner and mine that shit
>come back to unload and rechage batteries
>once the truck is filled go back to the rolling base and keep going

in space you move the entire shit near an asteroid and hide from the sun to avoid random asteroids aiming to your most valuable components, like the refinerey, shit asteroids have autoaim to your refinery sometimes.
>>
>>165275702
>playing with asteroids

its just suffering, like wolves and spiders

but yea, planets are definitely helpful for giving said incentive since its a tad harder to make all purpose craft, and more convenient to leave things at certain spots.
>>
>>165275816
Doing an armageddon playthrough puts you very sharp and it gets fun sometimes, but your stuff will be a bed of gattling turrets in the end.
>>
>>165275002
>that liquid-firing railgun is far too impractical, a flamethrower firing ClF3 would be far better!

>How about if you have two bases?
Only time I've had two bases is when I abandoned a small outpost (life support, minimal production facilities, supplies), which would serve as backup spawn in case shit went down.
Given that said base needed nearly no power, it practically required no resupplying. Don't know why you'd ever want more than one fully operational base.

>Want to move stuff around thats not connected while the mining ship is out doing stuff?
I keep everything connected for the same reason.
If it's absolutely necessary (meteor or invader broke connection), I'd probably resort to transporting with the on-base utility ship (grinder/welder, small-scale mining).
>>
>>165276892
That's my problem with the game. There's either no incentive to do anything other than make a borg cube with guns on it or try some actual engineering but the whole thing just explodes because keen code.
>>
>>165276892
The point I'm making is that not everyone plays purely to absolute necessities. An example being myself and my friend group who tend to do things for the sake of it. Not that you are in any way required to.

Borg cubes offer painfully little firepower for any given amount of material.
When it comes to combat, drones are the way forward.
>>
Mini drones are also nice for boarding ships, they're more durable than a space engineer and more likely to survive the pod impact, plus they have a lot more firepower and are expendable.
>>
>>165278405
A spengie respawns for free.
If you want a replacement drone, you'll have to pay for materials.
It follows that when comparing spengies to drones, the latter is less expendable.
>>
That is true if you can get a medbay on the ship, I've always done one man, one chance boarding pods so I was thinking of those. The good thing about drone boarding pods is they can carry and use multiple even in single player.

Any games where I can build a habitat? I'm sort of looking for something like spengies where I could build a base on a moon or ice planet but it lacks the whole ability to create biomes, farming, as well as interior fidelity.

The closest things I could think of was Minecraft because I can transplant biomes but I would prefer something that was more suited to sealed base building.

Making punched card reader to convert binary -> linear motion
I'll need to make a movable loose rod to connect the push plates and the punched card, since it can only input 0-9 on one digit position at a time. So it would input 1's first, slide down a notch, then 10's etc

I did a very crude adder as a prototype but this one I want there to be subtraction as well, and the top segment of the punched card should determine that. If it doesn't collide, it adds. If it collides, it subtracts.

Spend time with the game mostly, for your first play through, try to steer clear of the internet and it's designs, but on subsequent runs, look shit up and learn from what you find.
But mostly you will just get better over time, everything gets better with practice, even if you don't mean to.

As a pro-tip, the hardest thing to do in this game is not building yourself in, when you do something, section off a relatively large area of the map for it.
Also, learn how to make a bus, it's something I only started doing recently and it simplifies things tremendously.

What's the best/fastest way to get rid of the gorillions of stone my miner ship picks up in spengies? And is there a way to automate it? Right now I just have a connector loaded up with a bunch and set to drop it all, but it only does a little at a time and it's much faster to drop it manually since I can hold like 10x the amount it's dropping per action.

I'm on a blaned and have a fuckton of uranium I want that's like 100m underground, which means I have a lot of stone to chew through before my little miner craft can get to it, so I need a good way to get rid of all this stone.

the blue slug(s) with the pink circles on the ends now bridge the gap between the punched card and the push plate

For every revolution of the bottom circle, it pulls down the casing holding the slugs, getting ready to read the next digit position. The slug-holder is sprung, and when pulled down comes under tension. Once it's read and added the bottom segment on the punched card I just need to push the ratchet to the right so it stops blocking the sprung rod, and it will spring back up to the first position again.

Missing a lot of the ancillary systems but the barebones are there

Haven't messed with tanks in a long time, but I always ended up putting upward-facing jets on the front to keep the nose down. When you think about it, you're running into the same problem newfriends always run into: center of thrust and center of mass [insert incoherent REEEEEEE's here] are out of alignment. Wheels apply force only at the very bottom of your craft, forcing the whole thing to pitch up.

It makes gpu crash, along with pc.
Spengos did it too for a couple of weeks in the past, but then it was fixed and I never figured out what it is.
It doesn't look like overheat, the frames are capped, the drivers are up to date.
It just makes the gpu shut off or the drivers crash, and pc restarts.

Guy who originally had the problem here. Still happening. Not sure what the deal is, but they suddenly worked after quitting and re-loading the save. Problem is, any new landing gear I make seem to be unable to lock until I quit out and load back up again. The landing gear seem to not be detecting surfaces, because even though all of them are flat on the platform I built, the proximity count stays at 0.
>>
>>165344525
Nope, win7.
The only thing that comes to my mind is that I somehow have a thermal shutoff setting somewhere I don't know, and it cuts the card above 70°C (which is retarded since the fan isn't even spinning at full speed at that temperature), but I have no idea where to look.
The card is at about 65C when playing, so it would make sense that it can peak over 70 and shut off, but it doesn't really happen constantly, as I said spengies did it for two weeks and then stopped and even FTD doesn't always do it, sometimes you go a week without it happening and then the next week it crashes constantly.
I also don't know why the card heats up so much in ftd, I understand it in spengies but FTD on fastest shouldn't be that heavy on the GPU.
>>
>>165345831
Then it is as I say, you should send an angry email to Marek full of >:@ faces saying MAREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKK

Other than that, don't break your landing gears and reload once when you're done building until they "fix" them again.
I've also had problems with antennas turning off and never coming back online again.
>>
>>165346032
Open precision and tune your fan curve nerd.
>>
>>165346386
>gpu shuts off when it should not
>just make it run cooler brah
If the fan ain't running, evidently the card shouldn't shut off at that temperature since I haven't messed with it.
You would expect the fan to go full WRYYYYYY if the card was about to reach its limit.
That said, I am very doubtful it's related to temperature because I've seen it also happen at lower temperatures and with higher fan speeds, but I don't know if maybe the temperature just spikes up in a second for whatever reason and I fail to notice it.

forgot to add they act very much like thrusters so if you let go of w they throttle down to 0% almost immediately

>robocraft talk making me want to play
>hop on and realize all my bots are no good
>decide start a new one
>spend a good 10 minutes building a small tank before testing it
>realize I built it backwards
>not a big deal, baleet it and start it again from scratch
>after another 10 minutes or so, decide I want to take a module off another bot to use on this one
>exit to garage to swap to other bot and apparently I'm disconnected

Can one man really be this retarded?

Aparently yes.

Anyway, the new propeller is fun, but the lack of game modes I want to play still turns me off from the game. Honestly, why the fuck did they remove the classic mode?
>>
>>165401816
Yes, this was back when they broke multiplayer completely then told him to fuck off and fix it himself.
Or something like that.

Goddamn.

>Honestly, why the fuck did they remove the classic mode?
because nobody was playing it

coincidentally elimination also had the lowest rewards with a chance of receiving none at all if you didn't score high enough before getting shot down and it also had a relatively high waiting time with intermittent server issues preventing players from specifically playing elimination
