Hey /fgg/, I asked this in the last thread, but I got no response so I'll try again. I'm trying to play Melty Blood for the first time, and I don't know how to set up the controls. I just think that everything people find hype about 3S is a bunch of BS that very few characters in SFV have. Which kind of just proves Daigo's point. People want their character to have broken dumb shit.

If you can get the balance right with broken shit, the game would be a success. Woshige trying to make everything neutered isn't going well with a lot of the community.

That's basically what Daigo said. It's not his opinion that matters, it's that people prefer broken games or rather games that make your character feel strong. That's the history of competitive fighting games.

For example, he thinks personally that Super SF2 is the more balanced and polished game, but the playerbase loved ST despite it having more bugs. It was the faster game with more BS.

Vampire Hunter was popular because every character had so much BS. 3S has a lot of BS and people love that game more compared to the patched version that came right after. It's not a coincidence that people find Urien in SFV fun.

If Capcom can find a way to just buff characters, but at the same time achieve a great balance, it would be more popular than the current SFV.

honestly i think the bigger issue isn't that people want their characters to feel strong its that losing hurts, and the skill levels of most players especially in sf is low. a lot of people aren't willing to learn or don't have what it takes so they rely on gimmicks its no coincidence that everyone gravitates towards shotos because its well known they are good for beginners but still top tier.

Pros general know or understand most characters in the game, particularly how their main character matches up against the rest of the cast.

For example, they go up against character A well and knowing that character A has certain moves that beat out his main's normal moves, so he knows he can't use those moves a majority of the time unless it's safe to do so. Knowledge about the different matchups is the primary factor.

You don't actually need to remember frame data. What matters is knowing your and their options in different situations, and frame data is just what dictates it. It's enough to know "when I block this move, I can punish with this combo", or "when I block this move, I can put out a jab to interrupt their pressure", instead of remembering a move is -4 or -5 or whatever.

No because for most moves it's obvious if they are safe or unsafe, so it's really just about learning the ambiguous ones. Also, part of the higher level mindgame comes from the opponent knowing when the blockstring is unsafe then doing something different instead. For exemple, say my blockstring is cr.LK, st.MP, cr.MK, where cr.MK is unsafe. If I know that my opponent knows that cr.MK is unsafe and that he's waiting for it, I might just do cr.LK, st.MP, walk forward and throw.

but its not just limited to pros, after you commit and play long enough, you'll remember and learn which moves are safe and unsafe. you don't need to know the plus or minus of every single normal and special in the game, just basically which moves are unsafe or negative on block enough that you can punish them with your own moves. every single character has at minimum a 4 frame normal that can be comboed into a special, so thats a good start. moves enemies use that are atleast -4 on block can usually be punished (if you're close enough) so just research common ones for characters you keep running against in matches online

I thought that was the idea behind it. It would make the attacker ease a bit on the offensive because of the grey health and give room for the defender to breathe while for the cost of a vtrigger.
Maybe make it so the player on the offensive gets a slight advantage if he gives away his offensive to read a v-reversal.
