Should I use mods on my first playthrough?

No.

It's best to get in bare and learn the basics. There will then come moments where you'll tell yourself "I wish I could" and that's when you should look for mods. If you can imagine it, there's a mod for you and it's most likely in the workshop on Steam and two clicks away from being activated.

However if you begin your game with mods loaded you miss out on some cool stuff and you also overwhelm yourself with shit to do and might quit before you get to the really good stuff.

If there was no penalty for harvesting organs, it would be way too fucking easy. It's already pretty easy to just wait until a party happens or something and snip out the most valuable organs and sell them off. relationship penalty is still there but that's fine. they can be a lil scared of the guy doing the executing and shit but you shouldn't get a morale penalty for actually giving the raiders that just attacked you a chance instead of finishing them off.

soil is 87% walk speed, which means it's definitely worth your time laying down at least some concrete pathways for majorly used areas. Autodoors are very nice to have on doors that get used all the times, like stockpile, dining room, kitchen, freezer doors, etc. but for stuff like bedrooms or battery and power rooms they're not super necessary. There's not really any downside to them aside from the extra cost though, so you might as well upgrade to autodoors if you've got the spare parts for it. They make it so they barely have to slow down instead of stopping for a second each way.

Check your resolution/if you're in windowed mode. Apparently the bar can disappear for any of these reasons. Apparently it is bugged with anything under 1280x800, too.

General consensus is resolution, screen, or UI issue. Haven't had it myself so I can't help much. It is not an issue with it being pirated, I can assure you that.

I might bump the occurrence rate up though because I haven't seen any either at 60 days in, and though I want them to be relatively uncommon I want at least a decent chance of encountering them a few times a playthrough because ones you do encounter will always be hostil, hard to take down and usually be huge druggos.

It's not so much that, they need to actually spread.

Diseases have a hidden incubation stage, so early gamre they would spread during this phase and realistically knock out a fair chunk of your pop. As you get better tech you can come up with ways to detect diseases faster, giving them less time to infect people and more time for you to treat them.

Game is a time sink if you love basebuilding. I'm currently at over 100 hours in so far and I've only bought the game since update A15 (not including time spent before when I pirated it).

On the downsides, it has obvious balance issues and it seems way too RNG dependent at times but despite our bitching we continue to play the game and have fun (mostly because the game is so moddable to our tastes).

For people wanting to "try it out" I suggest pirating it, if you must. It is quite easy to find a torrent for the latest build.

Game is in alpha and it was in it since few years now. Dev seems to have his shit together. There are constant updates both mechanics and content wise. Tynan keeps supporting modders. Mods are sprouting from nowhere all the time.

I'd say it's worth it. Nothing stops you from pirating or waiting another year or two either to be honest. It just keeps getting bigger and any changes to the main game that people doesn't like modders are tweaking and fixing at spot.

It's also indie game of the 2016 on indiedb if that means anything for you.

I've been playing Rimworld since A9 or A10 I think. I had my fair dose of fun and spent some time on it. I did wish for more for sure thing. Game is kept open to tweaks for our comfort. Not because dev had to do that.

This is a fair point, other EA games had a cheaper price while still in EA, and raised it to full at release. It's going to take a long time for this one in particular to even be close to finished.

But whether the game, unfinished as it is, is worth the money is another matter entirely. I say yes because it's entirely playable and beatable, little to none of the problems I would expect from an alpha, and it sucked me in to spend a hundred hours on vanilla alone. Price of about three movie tickets here but I enjoyed it way more

What I'm thinking here is mods were unplanned result of Rimworlds existance. They may have surpassed the vanilla Rimworld but only because Rimworld existed in the first place. It's easier to improve on creation rather than expanding it or even creating it in the first place.

As a designer - It's far easier for me to fix someone elses mistakes or missteps in design rather than creating something from the scratch. Especially if I had vague idea of what I'm about to create in the first place. It's easier to fix or improve than create because you add second head to the process. Problem is without first head there wouldn't be the process at all.

Don't excuse cutting the price because someone elses improved it and full work was done by first person. Excuse price if you think what you get isn't enough in your opinion.

I`ve not played this game alot in a16,but this is the idea of it:
for now i have 2 snipers and 1 smg guy wich deals with anything Randy is throwing at me.
I have 3 dark sniper nests around my base so raiders have a very hard time charging me and when they do they meet my cariboufu`s.
Now i am saving for a shield generator so I can have these 3 tile dark walls infront of the nests for the shield viewer to hide.
For when shield only raids hit I in A15 I would have a gojuice or luciferium pawn with bionic leg run around and bait half of the raid to follow him and for rest i would use turrets to tank the faggots while they get 2shot by the snipers

This is one of my "early" defenses I set up. It's pretty rough in this stage and I have not even set up sandbags in front of my turrets.

It does work, in theory. Raiders that go through my funnel tend to focus fire on my tanking turrets while my bunker mows them down. Melee units can reach my bunker if they're tanky enough like those thrumbos, but they've taken so much damage that simple kiting could counter them.

I use it. It's pretty good. Adds a bit of a buffer between tribal and industrial tech.

It adds embrasures, but they act the same as sandbags except made of stone. The weapons are pretty good if you like melee. Adds more types of bows and crossbows if that's your thing.

The suits of armor with built in winter coats look dope and there's basically no reason not to wear cloaks instead of parkas on cold maps.

I guess the only problems I have with it are the new forges and kitchen benches seem a little superfluous compared to the fueled stove etc we already have and for some reason I get huge lag for a few seconds whenever new NPCs enter the map.

Kinda? Melee has its uses especially when your pawn is decked out with shields, plasteel weaponry, bionics. It also forces most pawns into melee, too, which can be a way to eliminate snipers and such.

It does mean much more chances to get injured in a fight, so you'll need a good doctor.

I should add that the armor and weapons are actually balanced. The suits of armor are generally worse than modern vests and helmets, which is a shame, because they look cool as fuck. But at the same time you can add armored gloves and boots to buff them up a little. The weapons are definitely solid and nice but not as good as plasteel swords you could be making instead.

1. Line up your shooters at a reasonable distance (based on their weapons).

Has anyone tried making a snake pit to throw raiders into? Snakes have toxic bites afaik in game but I don't know if the damage is worth raising them.

I do know that they reproduce quickly, at least. So you might be able to swarm raiders with them.

You are right about the whole "rape mod" thing. I was one of the first memeing it in the earlier threads but I do admit that it needs to take second base in priorities.

How's Psychology anyway. Is it a mod that purely makes the game harder or are there added benefits, too? Managing mental breaks and stuff still remains hard in certain playthroughs for me.

Just baths and showers. The idea is you can put it in colonists' individual rooms or create a communal (but private) bathing area. Tubs give more comfort and don't require electricity but showers are faster. High hygiene makes pawns feel good and reduces their ability to pick up dirt to track around, and low hygiene makes them upset. Also they take off their clothes when they bathe so you have to keep fresh clothes nearby to avoid them doing the walk of shame to the stockpile.

Just add a rapist trait. Rapists get a positive mood boost from raping, non-rapists get a global mood malus when rape occurs.

Then just add a rape surgery.

What you never do is give different targets to a bunch of people and let it rip, that triggers manhunterism(?) almost instantly.

tl;dr unless you do it the slow, micromanagy way, your pawns are getting shredded into bits by a horde of grazers.

No. They will have unique backstories, a unique trait pool to pull from, different psychological behavior (you'll see what I mean), etc. Their needs will be the same (except for a hidden one).

Rimworld modding is actually extremely versatile. You can alter almost any element of the base game in absolutely any way you want. Compatibility with other mods is the main problem, because two mods can't alter the same thing, which is why there's libraries to add common functionality for similar mods to build off of. You really underestimate the modding power that Tynan has given the community, it's light years ahead of almost any other game.

We have like 10 weapon packs, none compatible, all highly focused, so that it's impossible to get a decent spread of weapons from low tech through to future tech. Tynan should appoint a Mod Czar to enforce compatibility standards and allow defs to draw parents from outside the mod folder. Then a single constantly-updated collaborative mineral resource pack mod could share parents back to all the mods people want to make to add mineral resources, for example. If three people want to use copper they can draw the def from this shared location instead of needing to make their own copper every time and then come up with clumsy """solutions""" that allow you to convert between copper types.

Surgery success was never raised as a topic, surgeons simply should not cut the patient's head off if they fail to install dentures, unless they are very bad or very drunk. Mods can already draw from outside their own mods, just not from abstracts (which don't affect the game and can be freely redefined). In my case, if Psychology detects Romance Diversified, it disables a handful of traits and the Kinsey scale because they will not work properly with the detours that Romance Diversified is blocking. I don't advise using them together (in part because Psychology does all the key stuff Romance Diversified does, and better) but if people want to they are able to. If you install Less Arbitrary Surgery, and put it before Psychology, it will disable Psychology's override of the Recipe_Surgery class, but then Less Arbitrary Surgery will detect you have Psychology installed and enable the features that Psychology had to disable. Sure, in XML it's harder to cross-mod things (you can still use C# classes from other mods, though) but that's just a limitation of XML.

Literally every thread. Hey newbies, it's OK if you use mods the first time. Rerolling chars for 30mins to get people who aren't useless, crippled geriatrics gets old quickly. So does the rather meager surgery system in this game. Use Prepare Carefully and EPOE. It's fine. There's a whole bunch of quality of life mods that I also recommend that you can find on steam workshop like Refactored Workpriorities, Feed the Colonists, etc. What the autist is forgetting is that this game is very much in alpha so it's still very rough around the edges when it comes the interface and balance.

Glittertech was a good mod FOR its time. Now it just looks like a poorly balanced piece of shit next other mods. Want good surgery and organs? EPOE+ADS. Want better power generation? [sd] advanced power generation. Want more turrets and weapons? More Vanilla Turrets+RimArsenal. Glittertech offers very little that other mods don't do better. What it does do is add factions that will massacre you with OP weapons, armor, and implants that you can't craft yourself and really stand no chance against.

Having fun with it. Been attacked by vikings, medieval imperials, tigers, raptors, zombies, new insectoids, and tribals so far. Their reactions are so bad that they cannot even live with each other domestically without suits. So, according to lore, being in the same room as a quarian without her suit is almost as far as going to home base with her.

Quarians eventually adapt, of course. If they survive the encounter their immune system will fully adapt in a manner stronger than most races. It would make sense that Quarians "mate for life" because of these restrictions.

In that area that the image depicts my colonists follow the tiles pretty loyally. In other parts of my base, in particular the more open parts, you would see pawns going off the sidewalk and crossing fields since the game does the math and assumes that's the fastest route.

It's pretty alright at keeping dirt off things, though my picture isn't the best example for that.

Currently doing a quarian run myself based on the events in Haestrom. I pretty much just set the scenario so that infections and immunity gain are much harsher at the cost of being able to better handle tech and medicine.

Just checked some of my screenshots, it seems like they try to look for a good route when they go somewhere close but when they cross the entire map they go straight and sometimes actually turn back if they hit a wall or a "hill"
Im sure the dev talked a lot about these as pathing is probably his main concern about the whole game.
