I wouldn't say it's detrimental at all, the bleak tone his work takes as actually pretty fitting. What I like about his games is that they don't try to make you feel comfy, or hopeful. I wouldn't even try to say they're deep, thought I think they are. His work is just meant to be a giant fuck you, and it's that kind of audacity that lets him get his point across and hammer it in, the melodrama is supposed to be played up, because he made the game to fuck with the player and make them think about those circumstances on a deeper level.

i really can't agree to any of that honestly, not even for the sake of argument. taro's writing doesn't prompt the player to think, it tells them what to feel, it's pure melodrama. subtlety is a strength in any kind of art, the old jazz saying that "it's the notes you don't play that matter', the unasked question hanging and lingering more powerfully than the asked question or the explicitly addressed element.

There's plenty of merit in it, I've yet to meet a person that plays one of his games without feeling something, his games are about giving you a what if, what if this aspect of humanity got to this extreme, imagine this type of future where this could happen, stuff like that, subtlety is mostly just fear of scaring an audience, there's a difference between holding back the emotions in your work, and overwhelming the story with emotion, and I don't think Taro does either, he mixes dark humor with raw storytelling to deliver an amazing experience.

Persona > SMT

Persona actually has a well constructed lore while SMT has a mess of ideas. Its very nicely explained how "personas" are born, while there are multiple versions of the same demo, even though many of them are suppose to be single entities. I understand there being multiple Pixies, but multiple Ares' or Lokis?

Persona's characters are much more interesting than any of SMT's cast. All of the SMT characters represent something and thus are on the extreme side of things. You have a friend who is on the extreme of law, another on chaos. This makes them boring and static. In Persona, each character's backstory and actions revolve around a central theme, just as "death" or "truth". Going along with this, the themes of Persona is much more interesting. The tarot cards are the motifs of the series so it connects very nicely with death and truth.

Gameplay-wise, Persona gets rid of that archaic system of talking to demons, which feels incredibly random at times. They replace it with the social link system, which causes the pace of the game to flow better and gives a bit more re-play value to the game. In the newer SMT games, they have an outdated system where you can't see your enemy until you fight it enough or if you are a high enough level. In Persona, the enemies are always visible and their strengths and weaknesses should be easily identifiable by a variety of characteristics.
