Use the Golden Nug to get your decent schematics back if you can, or play JoH as soon as possible, or save up and get that shit from the Black Emporium. Also, crafting is always going to be 10x better than loot so sell everything that isn't a unique item. If you grind for power, you can 'unlock' an area without having to actually go there, which gives you the option to farm for half-decent resources at the War Table. I recently started playing Baldur's Gate with the core rules enabled. I've familiarized myself with the D&D rules but I'm dying, saving, and reloading a lot. Is this how it's supposed to be or am I just playing like an idiot?

I just use this level 2 companion to solo most enemy encounters simply because enemies almost never hit him. If I involve the rest of my party everyone's toast.

I liked assassin best, but I generally love assassin builds. DAI assassins are extremely repetive (mark of death > stealth > crit and kill enemy > stealth > critc and kill enemy > repeat ad infinitum)
Tempest rogues are fun to play with, but they're kind of badly overpowered (especially DW rogues)
Knight Enchanter is also moderately fun if you plan to make a melee mage

To be frank I found the combat in DAI to be pretty unengaging overall. The hard boss battles were fun but the regular fights were just tedious and I wanted to avoid them most of the time. Dragon's Dogma has much better combat if you're into that specifically (everything else is probably worse).

Bull is one of the better companions, but of course that is a matter of opinion. He's quite fun, gives interesting insight into Qunari if you're at all interested in lore, and has surprising depths should you care to get to know him better. The VA work is so-so and he's arguably the least useful of the warriors if you're looking for someone tanky, but he also has a surprise in one of the DLCs if you make certain choices.

Have been asking myself that for years

So, I have problems even with random templar groups in Hinterlands. Crafting gear didn't really help. As an ice mage I am especially loving the immune to cold templars with tons of that special armor. I manage to beat them but it takes forever and I use tons of pots.
Then I've (finally) tried using the tactical mode and I have a few questions:
Why?
Who thought this control scheme was okay?
What's wrong with Bioware?
Why do I have to share controls with consoles?
What was wrong with Origins controls?

I am thinking my party composition is wrong. I use Varick/Sera with ranged specialization, Cass with sword and board and negress with spirit focus. Plus my ice mage PC.

Bonus question: are there specific Inquisition perks I should prioritize? I have magic and history and I plan to take the other two dialogue perks asap then potion slot + more potions, ability point or lockpick.

I'd say warm and possibly humid. Thedas is warmer the further north you go, and Wycome is one of the city-states closest to Antiva, which is very sunny and quite dry. The Free Marches are the "breadbasket" of Thedas, so they would need to be quite temperate. Perhaps like the south of France, or considering the obvious comparison to the old Italian city-states, more like northern Italy.

Also, they famously drink a shitload of wine and love to get blasted, which makes me think it must be decent weather.

Also having three ranged and one warrior in a party isn't a great idea unless you know what you're doing. If you're having trouble, make sure you chose the skill that reduces your threat level, and work with Cass + Blackwall/Bull so they can pull aggro until you can get your shit together.

At the beginning you tend to die a lot because you have shit equipment, shit schematics and shit materials to craft weapons/armors with
The DLCs are harder mostly because enemies always scale to your level. I remember Hakkonite Defenders/Bruisers used to do 2k+ damage to my rogue with just a single attack if I didn't get out of their away fast enough

You can go to the BE as many times as you like, the tier 3 stuff will be there when you hit the right level along with everything else. Every crafting material in the game will be there eventually too, the shop updates as you discover them.

You can't change your specialisation, so champion + respec will have to do. (Personally I think champ is better than reaver anyway but that's a matter of taste and party comp.)

Don't use Tac mode. It's trash, as you pointed out. If you really need someone to cast a spell, use Ctrl to pause and switch to them. Most combat should be in the real time mode, though I admit this is easier for certain builds more than others.

Ice magic isn't bad, but it's almost always something you want a NPC to handle. As the PC, go for a DPS approach with Fire magic (the passives are also just blatantly superior to the other trees).

Double ice magic in your party comp was a mistake. Potion slots are your main priority, the +50% xp are not as helpful.


As an aside, I really hate how stealth is bugged when you attempt to reapply it eg. Stealth -> Leaping Shot (w/ Stealth upgrade) doesn't properly drop aggro like normal stealth and enemies still attack you.

I mean they work great against bosses since there's generally only one source of damage in those fights (the boss), but they may have a hard time in normal encounters when enemies start ganging up on you

Mark of Death > Stealth > Hidden Blades > other shit that deals damage (Mark of the Rift works well if you have enough Focus)
Get as much crit damage % bonus as possible on your bow (with a tier 4 bow you should be able to get 100-120% crit damage bonus, depending on the bow) and as much +DEX as possible on your armor (ignore CUN if you're an assassin)
Don't upgrade Mark of Death (the upgrade actually weakens it) and always trigger it manually just before it's about to expire. When you trigger it manually it deals 200% of the damage dealt when the effect was active. If you let it trigger automatically (after 8 seconds), it also deals damage, but a lower amount. One of the DLCs (don't remember which one, I think Hakkon?) also boosts the effect of the manual trigger to 250% (IIRC) instead of 200%

Almost forgot: there's also an amulet (don't remember the name) that boosts your ATK by 20% when you're not flanking the enemy, it works wonders with assassin archers (not so much with assassin dws)
