There was some old-as-fuck concept art of a Hawke-looking guy in Inquisitor gear, but DA2 left too much of a bad taste in peoples' mouths overall to warrant Hawke's return as a PC I think. Having varied protags means they can do more with timeskips, jump around Thedas more easily, offer new backgrounds/cultures to explore each time, and so on, even if they don't really capitalize on it much.

s/meg/ma aside, Mass Effect also started out with a more solid game plan, from what I can know. Even if they threw out the dark matter stuff, the overall arc of the trilogy is far more deliberate than what we've seen so far from Dragon Age.
Shepard as a character also has the luxury of being one species (human), two possible voices, and part of a military order, all of which make plotting shit significantly easier. No, Mass Effect went through the opposite: at first they wanted to put the dark matter stuff in it, but then the Reapers evolved into a completely different thing, then they added the Collectors, tied them to the Protheans and the original plot was lost. The team of Mass Effect isn't even a cohesive one and you can see this in the messy way they made the games and wrote the lore.
Dragon Age is, surprisingly, better directed and led. They planned the Fen'Harel/Breach stuff since from Origins and you can even find hints of Inquisition in a book that only a difficult-to-meet character drops in the Tower of the Circle of Magi ("Survivors of Arlathan?" "Conflict in Ferelden and Orlais" "True nature of the Fade and Veil"). The team of Dragon Age hardly ever changed over the years, at least not its most important members, and the story and characters have always been supervised by the same people.
And this time I think they might follow Shepard's example and let the Inquisitor be the protagonist again.

They are already setting things up to show that, don't worry. If you read the Chant of Light included in World of Thedas 2 and the codex entries in the games, you'll see that Andraste was probably a mage (she even accidentally killed her half-sister in "mysterious circumstances") and entered trance-like status, claiming to heard voices and bells as if coming from "far memories or visions".
She was probably also a Dreamer and you can bet your ass that Mythal guided all her moves in dreams, claiming to be her Maker, just like she pretended to be the Lady of the Sky of the Avvar heroine Tyrdda.
Also Tevinter already believes that Andraste was just a very lucky (mage) woman and that Maferath didn't even betrayed her out of spite and jealousy, but only because he had realized that by making her a martyr Tevinter would have converted more easily to the new religion. That's one of the reasons that brought the Tevinter Chantry and the Orlesian Chantry to refuse each other and created a schism between them.

He wanted to create as much damage as possible. I would do that too, if I was a mad power-hungry corrupted magister.
Not only that, but the Temple of Sacred Ashes was one of the few places where the ritual could have taken place. Remember that Corypheus needed to enter the Fade in the flesh again, just like he had done millennia before. Back then, he and the other magisters chose the city of Emerius, akaKirkwallfor a specific reason: it was full of lyrium and they could use all the slaves they wanted to fuel their blood magic.
In the present, the only thing that Corypheus didn't need was the blood, because the Orb already fueled a good part of the spell, but he needed the lyrium and the Temple was full of it (even Oghren says it back in Origins). Killing the Divine was just a message and a way to disrupt Thedas and its faith (and he did succeed in that).
That's also why the second Breach he opens at the end of the game is, once again, at the Temple of Sacred Ashes. The Veil was incredibly damaged there, so much a "scar" is left in the sky after being "repaired" again, and he just needed to use the lyrium and red lyrium that the previous blast had brought to light.
