Ok I bought SFV because everyone seems to think it's superior to MKX so I wanted to try it out.

Is the controller I'm using appropriate? Pic related? It seems like SFV has a more sweeping style of attacking that might be better suited for a joystick. What do you guys use as a controller? (I'm on PC so there is a lot of flexibility).

Please don't tell me I need one of those autistic giant fight stick things.

I've been playing MKX for like 6 months. I'm new to fighting games generally but I didn't want to play like a casual. I've got a pretty decent Thunder God Raiden game.

I always have liked the modern MK games. (The classic ones felt kinda clumsy to me). So I got into MKX which I really like.

I couldn't get as into SFV. It helps that I like the GGXrd Relevator cast more but I also feel like SFV doesn't offer a lot for me to keep coming back to gameplay-wise or story-wise. Especially story-wise. I'll take over-stylized anime shit over... whatever SFV's crap story was.

But yeah, there's definitely more SFV players online but I found myself getting bored of even that pretty quick. And I liked SFIV a lot back in the day. Guess this just didn't grab me. I'm kinda done with Capcom these days though.

Gill > Akuma ≥ Gen > Bison > Gouken

Gill is basically a god (or some kind of deity/entity as far as we know) so he's top tier.

Akuma and Gen are about on equal footing because it's not stated explicitly who killed who in their battle but I think we can safely say if Gen did die (which I think is likely since I think I read somewhere that said it was the case) it was mostly due to his old age, which gave him a handicap.

Akuma killed Bison so he's stronger than him. Although I don't know if Bison got a power upgrade IV/V onwards so he might be higher now. I'm mostly basing this off of when I was really into SF.

I don't think Gouken could beat Bison or Akuma, to be fair.

This stuff isn't explicitly explained in the games but you can read guides and FAQs, comics, etc. that go into this. I'd highly recommend the early Udon comics. They're pretty good.

Again, I haven't paid attention to the canon since SFIV days so maybe V changed everything and another Anon can correct me on this.

There is a certain player in Ultra Gold who has been around since the release of SFV. Everytime you fight him, the game is terribly laggy right from the start and he does not seem to be affected by it at all: instead, he spends the entire match taunting and doing combos with no issue at all while my screen attempts to show me frames. Clearly a lag switcher or something of equal sort.

Well, after meeting him once again after months of absence, I decided to check out his Steam ID after the match. Guess his nationality? Spanish.

I am planning to join the company of PeerBlockers now and put Spanish on my ban list. I just worry that eventually using it will be punished by Capcom and I already have a warning on my account as I used the one round mod to unlock colors.

Am I being stupid when I think Capcom could punish for it? They could easily argue that you are exploiting the system as you could pick only beneficial opponents while others can't. But I don't want to deal with these motherfuckers, no more.

It's pretty easy. You just have to change your gameplan from rushdown/zoning/whatever to destroying houses where they are.
Can be quite tricky though because classic fighting games still keep forcing the invisible moving wall shit. Jacko would be way better to deal with in smash.

Some friends picked up Revelator and I got a copy for Christmas as well. I have never really been into fighting games but Guilty Gear looked kind of fun. Wgat is the best way to learn the ropes? Barebone basics I mean. People kept linking me to combos on Dustloop but never explain anything.

Also, are there any tricks to practice inputs on a gamepad? Fighting games seem really fast, its amazing how quickly the pros can do them. Kind of daunting really.

I would start by going though the tutorial and challenge modes and combo trials that are in the game first. They explain a lot of shit.

The first thing to realize about doing special move inputs is that you're supposed to slide your fingers in circular motions. Not press the directions individually, like you're typing in a code.

Start by learning some basic combos and combo notation. Google fighting game terminology and notation to find out that stuff. Go through the tutorial to learn how to block and airdash and RC and whatever else it teaches you. Find out what characters are easier for starting players and focus one. Most importantly is when you play against people focus on learning, winning is important but learning what opponent does and what you can do to counter it are the best ways to improve.
