If you're getting Unleashed at any point get the PS3/360 version. The wii version is shit.
In Shadow, plan out the routes beforehand and avoid the Ark levels at all costs.
In 06 save right before Wave Ocean.
In SA2, GET THE AIR NECKLACE. Get it before you finish the level because it will make one of the last levels less nightmarish.
In SA1 get the second light speed upgrade ASAP. Also get the jet anklet as Tails before anything else really because it makes his levels a fucking joke

Yeah, its mostly because CD was the first real sonic game I ever bought. I picked it up on a whim in the psn sales, beat it in a day and realised what I'd missed by not playing the games. I bought the mega drive collection which came with the trilogy and the side games. I bought the rest of the psn store. As a first time player CD really sold me on the series, the soundtrack, fluid controls and memorable zones made a really fun experience. Though I was stuck on stardust speedway 3 for longer than I'd like to admit.

Anyone remember Sonic Universe's "Silver Saga?" Well through some miracle (and by miracle I mean a random search on the Sonic News Network Wiki) I found some blog posts that were initially lost via the Archie Sonic Blogs being taken down.

Saturn/PC has better graphics, slightly smoother physics, much better special stages, and CD-quality musicwhich in my opinion is better but that's a matter of preference and not objective.
The problem with the Steam version is it's just the Genesis version in a glorified emulator/ROM package.

So in still in the middle of marathoning these games so I can get into the series as a whole and I have to ask. What is with the sudden difficulty spike with sonic 2? I've been playing them out of order somewhat and it sticks out massively. From the moment you exit the first zone you're faced with cheap deaths. I think its a little over kill to have water and drowning and falling platforms all by zone 2. And I think im about halfway through, up to metropolis zone and the difficulty shows no sign of stopping. Luckily getting lives isn't too hard if you hoard rings it seems and take the levels slow it seems. Also screw the way the special stages work. Not only are they hard, they take all your rings and I've accidentally entered them a few times.

Sonic 2 has weird difficulty. From Emerald Hill to Chemical Plant there is a difficulty jump but from there until Metropolis the difficulty evens out, and then it jumps hard again, and it stays that way.

The thing you have to remember about the classic games is that going fast isn't the point. Going fast is the reward. If it's you're first time ever playing them you will have to go slower because you haven't learned all the tricks and level layouts yet.
I also dislike Sonic 2's special stages, but that's just because I suck at them and spent most of my childhood playing them as Tails.

I played Sonic 2 this year for the first time. I don't remember having a lot if trouble with the stages, but I do remember having trouble with some bosses. Sky Chase is intentionally an easy breather filler level. Wing Fortress is one act, nowhere near as long as a Metropolis level but with the most technical platforming since it takes place in the air with all the obvious instant death pits that sky levels usually entail. Death Egg is just the final two bosses and nothing else.
So yeah, Metropolis may as well be the endgame level in terms of difficulty.

For the games, mostly yes. Fire & Ice wasn't a disaster and the announced games coming next year instilled a lot of hype and interest. Runners was the only real big disappointment.
For comics, I don't think so. Big hiatus to start the year, the last half of SWC was a dud, the main comic hasn't been great since early 2015, and the classic Sonic stuff currently is a disappointment. Universe did mostly fine this year, though, Mega Drive was fun, and there's some interesting stuff announced for next year, but I don't feel it was a good year overall.

So I just finished playing through Lost World for the first time, and I thought it was pretty good. The majority of the levels are fast-paced and have a good rhythm to them, although the gimmick-based ones like the floating level in Sky Road are kinda lame. I really liked the new controls, too.

The comic has a crossover with the Mega Man comic and then resets immediately after that at Sonic #252 and Universe #55. Sonic Universe is just a side comic that focuses on non-Sonic game characters (mostly) so they're not ignored while the main comic focuses on Sonic himself (mostly).
If you want to read the pre-reboot stuff, either start at #1 or #171. #1 is obviously the very beginning, #171 starts with a Shadow-centric arc, skips most of the "let's sweep the retarded shit under the rug" period the comics had after changing writers, and #175-#177 is generally considered one of the best parts of the comic. Sonic Universe starts after #196. There's also a bunch of other side comics and specials and whatnot but, aside from the Sonic X comic which is completely separate from the main comic, all of them end well before the comic even hits #100.

Either start with the reboot, StH 252 and SU 55, or start from the beginning. If you just want to read the new comics as they're coming out, then you just need to start at the reboot issues, and I'd recommend starting with that. If you have more interest in the comics, once you're caught up to the newest issue, go back and read everything from the beginning at your leisure.
Some people will say to skip to 160, or to read until you get tired of it and skip ahead, but post reboot there's really no reason for that. If you're going to bother reading the old comics then you might as well get the full experience.
