Looks pretty great.
OP, think you could storytime Sonic #25 so we could compare Spaz's take on the Sonic/Metal Sonic race from Sonic CD?
I recall that issue looking really good at a time when all of Sonic's other comics looked like shit.
>>88726526
Friendly reminder that we're 10 issues away from #300
>>88726568
Sure. You want the scanned version or the digital one that came with Sonic Universe #50?

Digital version has shitty gradient to the colors, do scan

Scan if it's more authentic.

>>88727124
>>88727142 Spaz
Both artists went for the same thing with design, but I like both for different reasons. Spaz's has better use of perspective and looks more dynamic. Yardley's has more going on and takes more time to look over.
Both are good in their own right.

This is the Metal that turned into Shard later in the series too, IIRC. Tons of personality in this robot.

By people who worked on the comic at the time.
Would you wear an Archie shirt?
>>88727176
Actually it's not. This is Metal 1.0. The Metal that becomes Shard doesn't show up until the mid 80s issues. That one is Metal 2.5

>Mecha Sonic
I'd forgotten that the old Archie issues could get Metal vs. Mecha straight.
Sometimes they'd call him Metal, sometimes they'd call him Mecha. Sometimes when Sonic got roboticized, HE was Mecha Sonic.
Then there's the Sega character named Mecha Sonic whom I don't think they even used...
That's one thing I'm glad the reboot straightened out.
>>88727251
This Metal was rebuilt in the Knuckles Chaotix special and Shard was referred to as the original Mecha Sonic during Endangered Species.
Have to say, after reading both, I prefer the new one.
>>88727251
It actually is. This one was rebuilt to 2.0 in the Chaotix special (with Power Gem), then 2.5. They didn't become different robots until 3.0.
3.3 became Captain Metal, and while the current one has no model number it continues on 3.8's tenure (which was rebuilt from 3.7).

>that Penders Sally
You know, I really dislike Spaz's art style and stiff panel work.
And I don't like how the Freedom Fighters were written in.
And I really don't like the old Archie Robotnik design.
And I'm not too keen on Metal Sonic talking, either.
...And I still prefer #25 to the new version. It's just written in such a clinical, boring way. I'm not even annoyed that it's closer to the game - in fact I kind of like that - so much as how sterile and uninviting the dialogue and pacing are.
>>88726151
>time eater
no, no, no, he can't say that. In generations, he and tails know each other which means it happens after Sonic 2, but canonically CD happens before Sonic 2

>>88727496
>You know, I really dislike Spaz's art style and stiff panel work.
My problem with Spaz is that his "trick" to get his characters to look three dimensional is to have them constantly tilting their heads to the side. So we're always seeing the underside of their chins.
Once you start to notice it it becomes really annoying. But to Spaz's credit, he was leagues better than every other artist who worked on the book at the time and he'd be the best artist the book had until Yardley came along.
>>88727502
That's apparently not the case here, since he's known Tails since before Sonic 1, and the issue before this one shows him taking down Silver Sonic and the Death Egg.
>>88727502
>Cd before 2
That's always been Fanon. The official canon has it after 3&K but before Sonic 4
>>88726315
Why is it that every single time Sonic sees metal he has to mention that he's fast. Is this a running joke or something?
>>88727496
I just find these new adaptions lately so utterly unnecessary.
An adaption was needed or rather better suited back early in the comic, but not nowadays.
This should be been in one of those digests rather than a full issue.
>>88726332
>>88726358
>>88726379
This is awful. They just skipped 3 zones. What the fuck?
>>88727584
If you fall for pinup art memery, sure.
Manak was the best early artist by a mile, as he actually understood things like inter-panel inertia, stretch and squash, etc. He was lazy at times, but he had the most talent in terms of comic art (as opposed to Spaz, who was a MacFarlane-esque figure). Similarly, Gallagher was the most talented writer but was overshadowed by DeCesare because he gave so few shits.
>>88727633
At least Unleashed was used as a way to establish shit for later, and Champions was a blast. This is something Sega mandated, which baffles me because we got 2 parts of Mega Drive this year which should fill the Classic quota
>>88727592
Wrong. CD has never been stated to have an official place in the timeline, and all Sonic 4 said was that CD happens at some unknown point in the past.
>>88727677
It was said on the Sega forums by someone at Sega that CD was after 3&K
>>88727633
It's not about necessity. You don't "need" any kind of issue. It's about entertainment, creativity, and weaving together a story.
>>88727387
>(you)r finger.
>>88727460
And next he will say "That might do it!"
>>88727690
No, that never happened. CD was never stated to be after Sonic 3 or anywhere in the timeline.
>>88727669
Guys like Manak and Shaw were perfectly fine when Sonic started and it was just a goofy funny animal book with no serilized narrative and strictly gag driven.
They didn't transition into it becoming an action-oriented title at all. Spaz, for all his "style of fundamentals" faults, was better suited to what the book was becoming over what it was.
And as evidenced in this thread, #25 was in that weird transitioning point where it wanted to be an action comic but also a self-aware funny animal comic and wound up the more bizarre for it.

>Arguing about CD's place in the canon
Game canon =/= Comic canon
Unleashed happens after Colors and Generations in this comic. It's between 2 and 3 here and that's all there is to it.
>>88727600
To be fair in this case, it's the first time he's met Metal Sonic.
>>88727819
According what was said there, Sonic CD still doesn't have a proper place in the timeline, the story of Sonic 4 just connects to CD. They never actually said CD is after Sonic 3.
>>88727537
>>88727592
>>88727690
Are you guys stupid?
Sonic 2 leads directly into Sonic 3, which means it can't take place between those two.
It can't take place after Sonic 3 either, as Sonic & Knuckles has Mecha Sonic, a revision of Metal Sonic
It could take place after S&K, but it could also take place between 1 and 2.
Considering that there's no mention of Tails or Knuckles, it's more likely to say that it takes place between the first two.
Likewise, if you consider the Silver Sonic in Sonic 2 to be the first revision of Metal, then it would definitely come after CD.
>>88727819
You can't listen to this. He literally changed its spot in the timeline just so that Sonic 4 would make more sense
>>88727089
>all new, all different
BENDIS!
>>88727753
Honestly? No, not really. Manak did last minute fill-ins in the 80-150 stretch and did two stories during Ian's run, and his art for that (aside from quickly having to learn how to draw characters like Shadow and Rouge) was an improvement over the pre-Yardley art even in that context.
I'm not trying to push him up or even say he's good, just the rest of it was...not great. Spaz was infrequent and stiff, Ron Lim never even tried, Frank Strom was horrible, Axer only did one decent story, Galan was bad at anything other than being on-model and copypasted, Alan made characters fucking MELT...
Butler and Gray were really the only other guys who did okay, and Gray's style was even LESS suited for the book at the time than Manak while Butler couldn't draw the cast at all because he was so used to superhero books. It's more of a matter of circumstance than anything that 9/10 issues from 41-159 would look better if Manak pencilled them. He was the best in despite his art, not because of it.
>>88727978
>Sonic 2 leads directly into Sonic 3
Wrong, there's a gap in time.
>Mecha Sonic, a revision of Metal Sonic
Wrong, revision of the Mecha Sonic from Sonic 2 (Silver Sonic).
>Considering that there's no mention of Tails or Knuckles
Wrong, there's no reason why Sonic can't go on adventures without them.

Spaz, for all the credit he gets, was 99% a cover artist and nothing more.
I think he actually penciled a grand total of 5 issues of the comic. His ability to do sequentials was NEVER very good. His covers were fine, but he was never much more than that. A cover artist.

I feel the best Spaz sequential stuff was in the megaman comic, and that was obviously after roughly 15 further years of experience
>>88727753
I feel that this specific issue's weirdness was due to having Spaz art mixed with Gallagher's writing, as gallagher's writing stayed more in line with the earliest days than Angelo's did

Mawhinney and Galan were the worst of the "actually able to draw the characters" group because of their background in animation.

He did the pencils for the first 4 issues, the Short Circuits for issues 9-12 as the X-Factor back ups for issues 34-35, though he only did the final inks for issue one, the short circuits, and the first of the two back ups (granted most artists on any of the comics don't usually do the final inks for their art), with Rick Bryant doing issue 2's inks and Gary Martin (the normal inker for Mega Man) doing issues 3-4 as well as 35's backup
