However, a mod called OSex came out that improves them a lot. Still not as good as HS and will probably never be given engine limitations. Facial expressions will always be stiff. The main draw is the huge amount of mods and customization, not the animations

You just have to know how to play Tsurumiku games. You don't just load one up and start edging. The entire first half of the game is character building; it's like watching an anime or reading a manga before you go off and fap to it. Mate I'm all for characterization, but I don't want 10 hours of it with practically no branches. And I specially hated how the protagonist worked. A two-faced magical shapeshifter made me uncaring about the interactions between him and the women because I could only see two things happening:
1- He using the information he collected to break the girls (which happens)
2- The interactions becoming meaningless except for the information gained
3- Almost all the corruption coming at the end
I want 1 but without 2 or 3. A spy which continously messes their lives up or something like that, anything that feels more active or involved.

The interactions are only meaningless if you completely ignore the existence of character building not to mention the substantial world building that takes place as well. Just because the lengthy story until the point of the erotic content didn't serve the purpose(s) you desired doesn't mean it didn't serve a purpose altogether. Sure, you didn't get routes and had to go through every heroine, but you did get to pick the ending based on your own personal preference.

Where exactly did I call the interactions completely meaningless? There are shades, it's not all or nothing. I didn't deny they served a purpose, and I know most nukige have little player choice. I'm just saying it was too much exposition for me and the protagonist was too passive. Planning planning planning, information colecting, small action, more planning, more exposition. It made sense for the setting, but then the setting itself is an issue if no fun is allowed until you're almost king of the land.
I could live with the hours of exposition with some damn fun in between. But Garland's overly methodical and weak ass doesn't allow for it. So to hell with Garland. I wish he had been more powerful or more willing to take risks, it's a VN nukige, he should be allowed to live and show us more than "today I learned men are disposed of and the priestess doesn't know" in an scene.

I was merely trying to explain that the writing did what it was intended to do in spite of what you wanted it to do. Personally, I liked the main character very much. He came off to me more as an intelligent psychopath careful and calculating as per his nature as opposed to a impulsive sociopath acting out recklessly to maintain his sense of control as per his nurture. The things you highlight in your distaste are the very things that I appreciated about him. He operated within his limitations, bided his time, and manipulated others to do his bidding for him like a masterful chess player. To put it anime terms, he was kind of like Lelouch without the emo and interpersonal attachment holding him back.

So, I've done some digging around to figure out exactly what the difference is between vanilla and katteban VH.

I played the fuck out of vanilla VH and already am familiar with it, but I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it to come back for katteban VH.
The wiki and pastebins give some info, but it's very vague.
I also found a thread on ULMF which talks about how the focus is on the loli, but it didn't sound too significant from what I read.

I see katteban is still being worked on and translated, which gives me hope.

Any advice or insight?
