No, the game does not if you don't want it to. With PDU off and little effort by the player put in to change things. R&D and upgrades to specific airgroups more or less occur as they did historically.

However, you can as the Japanese player make efforts to change your R&D, aircraft and engine production to stress certain models and variants.

Maybe you want to completely ignore the Oscar and never build it beyond the initial production run in 12/41. You can do that. Maybe you want to speed up R&D of the Frank to get in '43 instead of its historical introduction in '44.

All of these changes and advancements in R&D carry with them very important considerations regarding investment in resources. R&D consumes heavy industry, fuel, and supply - all of these are important for a Japanese player. Sometimes it might not be worth it pursuing an early production of the A6M8.

Let's take a look at the A6M3a Zero. This is a modified improved variant of the A6M2. The additional "a" signifies that this is the variant of the A6M3 that is carrier-capable. This means that they can operate from an aircraft carrier.

Currently, we are building 3x30 R&D factories for this model. Two at Hamamutsu and one at Sendai. As of now, 23 are built and 67 remain to be built. The reason for 3x30 as this is the most efficient number for advancing an aircraft, which advances by a month at a time.

I should not that each R&D factory requires an upfront supply and R&D investment to even start building. Say, to move from 0 (0) to 0 (1). Only once this investment is made will it start building, and this will also consume supply.

In HOI4, if I'm fighting a naval battle right next to my coast and the enemy has much bigger carrier force, can I negate it by deploying a few thousand land based fighters into the province and spamming destroyers without risking my more valuable shit?

Engines serve two purposes:

1) To help speed up R&D (once you stockpile 500 engines, you get an R&D bonus for aircraft with that enginer)
2) They are consumed with airframes to produce aircraft for use on the frontlines.

I should note that new engine models also require R&D and can also be sped up.

For instance, here I am researching the Nakajima Ha-45. This is used for Franks and will need to be researched and produced to both make them and speed up their R&D.

Currently, the engine is at an R&D % of 19% and set to switch to production in 7/43. Every time the R&D & hits 100, the production date advances a month. This means when the % hits 100 for the Nakajima Ha-45, the % will reset to 0 and the new production date will be 6/43.

R&D advancement works the same way for airframe models.

This changes depending on upgrades as tech improves throughout the war. It might also not reflect reality. Say the TOE calls for 120 1943 U.S. Marine Squads. If warfare brings it down and there are no '43 squads in the pool, it won't reinforce to its full composition of 120 squads.

I'm not as familiar with WitE, but generally you get a feel for when to attack an enemy based on the damage they are taking from bombardments and air attacks. Each unit has a fatigue and disruption stat. These start at 0, but go up through combat Air bombing, artillery and naval bombardments can all cause this to rise.

You have three types of attacks you can make: deliberate attack, shock attack, and bombardment. You can imagine what all these do, but generally if the enemy is taking casualties (destroyed squads from bombardments) then they are either 1) low supply 2) high disruption and fatigue 3) lack defenses or 4) a combination of all these factors). This is generally a good time to attack.

1) Deliberate attack: A slow, methodical attack that keep casualties lower. Generally best for attacking an unbeaten foe, wearing them down, or bringing down fortifications.

2) Shock attack: an all-out attack that increases AV value at the cost of much higher casualties. Should only be used when the enemy is on the run or a fortress is set to fall.

3) Bombardment: A defensive posture that simply attacks with artillery, no infantry attacks.

NF protips:
If you start with low literacy (<30%), clergy/intellectuals to 4% in all states ASAP. You need this to maximize literacy growth. Don't do any other foci until you hit 4% nationwide. Otherwise, go to ~3% of overall pop. 2% is for max RP, and if you go a little over, you don't have to worry about intellectual attrition due to promotions.
If you're already pretty literate, the first 30 or 40 years are pretty open once you've got 2% intellectuals since industry is still too inefficient for mass craftsmen focus. Do whatever, really.
Once you're literate and have some power, mechanization, metallurgy and economic thought techs, craftsmen/clerks foci in your most populous states. 1% clerks for every 4% craftsmen is a good rule of thumb.
If you're critically low on soldiers and can't raise the military spending due to party policy, you can use a soldier focus.
If you want immigrants to settle in a certain state, you can use the immigration focus there.
Only other useful foci are the party loyalty ones. Just put them on a big state and let it go for a while. Just check the electoral vote every once in a while in the pop. tab.
