PJ64 is still better than retroarch alternatives.
PCSX2 and Dolphin for PS2 and Gamecube/Wii.

>>163449134
I use Mednafen-saturn via retroarch as it's simpler than SSF and can be loaded easily through a frontend.
Mednafen-beetle-HW can do everything EPSXE can do nowadays and is more accurate. EPSXE only for romhacks.
>ZSNES
Maybe if you want netplay. Otherwise, quit memeing.
Kega Fusion for whatever it is that Genesis+GX on Retroarch doesn't support (I think it's 32x but it might be Sega CD).
Mednafen-beetle has some improvements over standalone. It's really accuracy vs graphics.

Better is an understatement. They are far superior than retroarch.

iirc there are regressions / additional bugs in the ps1 emulator. I'd stick with standalone since the whole point of using mednafen is for accuracy..

Pentium 4 hasn't been relevant since Core / Core 2 which in itself is more than 10 year old and Pentium was a monumental piece of shit compared to Pentium 3

>If I remember correctly, ZSNES was leading by more than 16ms
Not by much (92ms vs a bit under 75ms total system input lag), the test is also pretty dubious in places (using shaders reduces the input lag when there no logical way it ever should for example)
Anyway you're still saying that it's a good idea to drop any semblance of accuracy for 1-2 frames of input lag.

Doesn't matter how bad their interpreter is, because their recompiler is great.

I just tried running Tekken 3 in mednafen standalone and it's using more than a whole CPU core... I'd have to underclock my rig, to make sure it doesn't overheat, if i were to actually consider using this unprofessional software. It relies on multi-threading to even get 60 fps, which is sad considering how old the console is.. Definitely sticking with ePSXe..

>And there you go spreading falsehoods, mednafen isn't multithreaded.
Well for whatever reason, it's using more than 1 core's worth of cpu..

>implying that has anything to do with anything
mednafen isn't cycle accurate, so there's no excuse for requiring hardware that was made 20 years after the console came out.

>That's embarassing, stop using craptops.
Why pay money just to play on mednafen, when I can just play on ePSXe for free? I won't even waste my time trying mednafen saturn. I'll stick to SSF since that was professionally made..
>>

If you're using RA with threaded video maybe that could happen, otherwise it really shouldn't.

>Why pay money just to play on mednafen
In what universe do you live in where you have to "pay money" for mednafen, the only thing I have that can't run it fullspeed is a damn compute stick right now.

Professional:

adjective

1.
relating to or belonging to a profession.

2.
engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as an amateur.

noun

1.
a person engaged or qualified in a profession.

Okay I've downloaded and tested a whole load of PSP games, and all of them get stuck on the title screen. Whenever I try to play the game, it loops back to the title screen. I get the feeling it isn't an issue with the games, but with either the emulator or me.

The scene is losing its relevance in vidya. 3DS and WiiU have easy to use dumping methods that produce the same shit you get from the scene. And the games have signatures so you can verify that they're good dumps yourself. For PC, most scene groups just take a release from steam and slap a generic steamapi dll replacement with it and call it a day. They couldn't crack their way out of a paper bag. CPY is like the only group with any skill nowadays.

Does anyone here have knowledge of shader emulation? Could you tell a bit about what shaders are, in a video game sense? The Wikipedia articles are fairly vague.

Yes

Instead of waiting for shader compilation to occur the program continues without rendering the effect that is being processed.

Thats because shaders are extremely powerful things. They are pretty much a building block for rendering for all modern GPUs. Every bit of rendering these days uses shaders in one form or another.

Different Hashdb with different ideology; some just want to preserve proper scene release while other want to preserve all the info on the disc regardless of it being useful to run the game or not, most of the time they're reliable if your goal is just playing the game, keep in mind that loose upload don't encessarily mean they're actually matching the hash the group has so you have to verify yourself.

You're limiting yourself if you do that but if a low power device to play up to 5th gen (and a handful of 6th gen) is what you're looking for then it can be decent, won't come close to even an half decent computer though.
If you're really hurting for money look up refurbished i5/i7 based brand name desktop towers, you can get away with spending less than 300 on something more than adequate to tackle 6th gen.
>>
>>163530836
I honestly don't mind limiting myself to 5th gen console emulation right now. I am interested in using newer technology. Might be fun to code something I haven't done before, like ARM assembly or Vulkan.

I basically saw this article http://www.mudlord.info/blog/2016/12/22/so-this-came-in-the-mail/ and was impressed with the price of this device. I don't really have a preference for the operating system, although IOS is out of the question.

I read that the Nvidia shield came out in 2014 and is 32-bit only, so I don't think I will bother with that particular device.

Look at the titlebar, is the fps indicated 60 at all times (50 for PAL) then any slowdown you see is from the game itself.

>>163547804
>Is there a prefered setting to 'lock fps at 60' or always have is just above 60?
60 in that case means the game is running fullspeed so yeah you want to leave it like that.
To avoid audio crackling and warping you can go to your audio plugin settings and fin the part where it says timestretch to async mix.

The two big things that affect performance without risking too much issues are the speedhacks (minus the sliders, those have a very deep impact on the game itself so don't touch unless you know it won't fuck up the game, also MTVU can have a negative impact on performance depending on the game) and your graphics plugin settings (also if you have an AMD GPU avoid OpenGL at all cost and avoid software with an AMD CPU).

There are some game that will just run very shit regardless of what your computer is like R&C and Jak, those I can't help you with even an high end intel CPU and Nvidia GPU ain't gonna cut it (AMD is really shit in both department for PCSX2)

Have you used any other emulator on Android?
They keep a save whenever you quit the program and resume that whenever you play the game again. Kind of like sleep mode in a handheld console. Retroarch doesn't do that when the thing inevitably crashes leading to lost progress.

>>163577893
Older ones don't force adware, but don't they still spy on you?
>>
>>163578007
To be fair, it has an extra *source* of crashes apart from its own code. Nearly all phone emulators are actually prone to causing phones to overheat with their processing demands. People keep making phones that can technically meet those demands but not over sustained periods, so an end-user buys a phone that passes the baseline to run PPSSPP or whatever, cranks up the settings to see where the point just before slowdown happens is, like you'd do on a PC, then runs it into an overheat crash at those settings.

Vulkan renderer is more accurate than the GL renderer and faster than the software renderer. There's your benefit.

>TinyTiger stopped working on infinitely more useful Parallel to work on the vulkan backend for PS1.

How dare devs choose to work on something different for a while. Also, the bigger problem here is that the RSP dynarec needs more work to remove its huge bottleneck. Vulkan RDP just needs VI emulation to be feature-complete.
>>
>>163618197
>Also, the bigger problem here is that the RSP dynarec needs more work to remove its huge bottleneck.
That is one absurd claim. Z64gl with hatcat's slow-as-molasses RSP interpreter gets full speed. Meanwhile ParaLLEl struggles in 2D games.

What does Z64gl being inaccurate and fixed-function GL have anything to do with whether or not the RSP is the main bottleneck?

The fact that Z64gl + slower RSP has better performance than ParaLLEl proves that the RSP is not the main reason for the lack of performance.

No that's not what I'm saying, it BOOTS in openGL, but if you turn on enhancements (Resolution scale, perspective correction, widescreen, etc) the display breaks. This happens in all games
If you want to play in OpenGL at native res with no enhancements it'll work fine

>What does Z64gl being inaccurate and fixed-function GL have anything to do with whether or not the RSP is the main bottleneck?

Because inaccurate emulation invariably means it's faster due to less overhead emulating things that are required for accuracy. This is like complaining about bsnes being slower than ZSNES.

Pipkin just throws breadcrumbs to MAME when he feels like it but keeps everything significant to himself in a closed source emulator. Otherwise MAME would already be good for Dreamcast.

So I have a question about PPSSPP. I've used it for a long time, and I'm on the current nightly, but I decided last night I wanted to play Final Fantasy Tactics WotL. I've tweaked about every setting I can to try to get to run. Well it will run well, but randomly it will just straight close out if I press start at name entry, or just randomly if I'm advancing text.

I can't find anything else out about this problem because it's all literally "works on my machine" answers and the forums haven't been updated for months.

Any advice of anything else I can try/troubleshoot?
>>
>>163704007
As a note I've tried it with and without the slowdown patch if that might make a difference.
>>
>>163702087

It isn't accurate, the lens flare is wrong and so are some of the spot effects.

So I'm getting ready to travel for the end of the year, going on multiple 10+ hour long flights and I'm looking for a good controller for my phone for emulation

https://www.amazon.com/PG-9017S-Wireless-Bluetooth-Controller-Android/dp/B00BT71S4K

Anyone have any experience with this thing and can tell me if it's good or not?
>>
>>163709385
I don't own one but I'm pretty sure those are some of the best you can get for that kind of budget
>>
>>163709385
I have the ipega that's like that but with actual sticks (in an xbox/gamecube stick layout), it's a nice controller. D-Pad is really good, like the perfect level of pressure and give on it. Sticks have deadzones about at bad as your average logitech pad - nothing that'll ruin your day and you might not even notice, but I've been getting spoiled on gamepads and USB adapters for console gamepads lately.

I've found that on rare occasion the bluetooth will have a lag spike and fuck me up, but not in most play sessions. Otherwise latency is what you can expect for emulation on Android.

They're are definitely videos out there from people who know what they're talking about, but since the Saturn was the biggest success in Asian countries be prepared to deal with some hella thick accents and weird phraseology from English-as-a-second-language'ers. Off the top of my head though:

1. Dual CPUs in an era when they were not at all fucking common (PCEngine used dual 8-bit, but you'll notice that fucking flopped outside of Asia too).

2. Components that were not at all fucking meant to work together, due to the architecture being gutted and hastily redone at the last minute.

3. Components that weren't even really geared toward doing 3D especially well, leading to proper utilization of its two CPUs being extremely critical so you could at least "brute force" it into doing what you wanted by simply throwing a fuckton of raw cycles at the problem.

4. A method of drawing polygons and doing transparency that was either a complete pain in the ass or totally counter to how everyone else in the industry decided it was going to be done.

5. No devkit support until far too late.

6. Sega being cocks about supporting documentation for the abomination, which only made the previously mentioned problem worse.

7. Even if you managed to do everything "right" your 3D game was not going to look better than everyone else'. Nice waste of effort there, slick!

In contrast, PSX development was awesome, provided you could stand being kept at arms length from some of the key hardware. The N64 was great too in some respects, though it sucked in a lot of others.

Why is ZSNES hated? It's incredibly well optimized, and has extremely low latency. I understand the value in accuracy, but I don't see why you wouldn't want to use ZSNES over bsnes. Same thing as UltraHLE. By the way, why don't n64 emulators ship with patches that are applied to roms in memory to improve performance? For instance, oot subscreen delay when using HLE video plugins. Would be a cheap way to improve performance.

Isn't rendering embarrassingly parallel? Does existing LLE just use a single core?
>>163793201
Not an argument. For a very low effort, n64 emulator devs could vastly improve accuracy. They already use game-specific settings. RetroArch could automatically switch between bsnes and ZSNES based on required accuracy for 100% accuracy. This needs to be done anyway to play mods specifically targeting specific emulators.

Interesting, so theoretically the limit is just having more cores than tiles?

>It works with up to 32 threads. And I think that's just an arbitrary limit
It does work but the gains from more cores start being much less significant past 10 threads supposedly.
It's how much cores a regular install of a consumer grade windows license will allow you to use at most (although with 8/10 they started restricting that even more)

The bootrom is in the SoC. It writes the keys into the AES hardware on startup and locks itself before handing control over to the firmware.

The keys that are known are mostly for N3DS content. Nintendo was lazy and didn't want to make a new bootrom, so they just threw the N3DS crypto keys into the NAND and encrypted them with easily dumpable data.

There was a decapping fundraiser a few years ago, and the guy took the money and ran. Unless you want to fund it yourself, it aint gonna happen.

There are alternate ideas on how to dump it. See https://www.3dbrew.org/wiki/3DS_System_Flaws#Hardware
RAM isn't cleared on reset and the bootrom doesn't immediately set the exception vectors. If you take control of the ARM9, set up your own exception vectors, then reboot and somehow immediately trigger a fault you should be able to dump it.

I think it's a good idea and I have considered it in the past, but haven't felt it was necessary yet. In general, I'd rather patch a video plugin or emulator to improve performance in games. For instance, you can have your emulator detect fb read subroutines per game and write per-game code to make FBE much faster. You can take advantage of doing partial FB copies (in games where it only reads part of the frame buffer) or even do HWFBE like Jabo did.

But the work is already done, you just need to implement it. OoT subscreen delay can be fixed with a simple gameshark code, and there are tons of [f] ROMs floating around that could be stored as patches somewhere. Per-game code isn't portable, unless you write it in LLVM IR or something, which I guess you could, but is it a good idea?
>Is that better than just doing compute shaders? I'm considering trying new things.
Probably not. OpenCL is primarily for compute, and might have latency.

Is the N64 CPU emulation dependent on GPU emulation, or would it be possible to emulate something "headless"? (for TAS purposes)

For OoT, the only reason I'd prefer hacking the video plugin (which is what GLideN64 does IIRC), is because using that gameshark code has drawbacks. Doesn't the subscreen menu look glitchy? Granted I'll take messed up graphics over slow downs any day.

>Per-game code isn't portable, unless you write it in LLVM IR or something, which I guess you could, but is it a good idea?
Writing per-game code is sloppy, but in some cases I can't see a better alternative. How would you handle frame buffer reads, without writing per-game code, if you wanted to speed it up by doing partial FB copies?

>Probably not. OpenCL is primarily for compute, and might have latency.
Maybe I'll stick to my idea of trying out compute shaders then. Couldn't find a cheap device with vulkan support, so I may just learn D3D and do that.

>Is the N64 CPU emulation dependent on GPU emulation, or would it be possible to emulate something "headless"? (for TAS purposes)
It can be. For instance, Body Harvest's collision detection for walls is partially based on the z-buffer data generated by the RDP. Usually you can get by, with skipping graphics entirely though. Basically depends on how the game is written (how the software utilizes the hardware). Most games probably are not dependant on GPU, for CPU emulation.
>>
I just don't even mention it because I'd rather closed-source emulators didn't exist at all. They're a cancer on a scene whose primary focus is (or should be) on preservation.
>>
>>163801378
Subscreen menu is already glitchy. Okay, going deep into the realm of ugly hacks here: you could have it activate the code for ~3 seconds whenever you press start.

Yeah, that's true. You don't need to compile it at runtime.

Can't you just use a Vulkan simulator?

Okay. So which emulator (if we only need basic accuracy, enough to run e.g. Mario 64) has the highest performance in raw frames/s? UltraHLE? 1964? Modern emulators?
>>163802195
Look, no, pal, the real problem here is you, and the emulator devs who are too worried about "piracy" and "copyright" to make meaningful progress. If a useful emulator is closed source, you reverse engineer it. If a console has leaked devkits, you don't stay away from them because they might be illegal to use. Maybe it's inconvenient, but the truth is that the emulation scene has its roots in piracy, and I don't see why people are worried about that. I mean, just look at this:
>DISCLAIMER:xenia is not for enabling illegal activity. The goal of this project is to experiment, research, and educate on the topic of emulation of modern devices and operating systems. All information is obtained via reverse engineering of legally purchased devices, games, and information made public on the internet.

>Okay. So which emulator (if we only need basic accuracy, enough to run e.g. Mario 64) has the highest performance in raw frames/s? UltraHLE? 1964? Modern emulators?
Hard to say desu senpai. Different emulators use different optimizations, so some games might be faster on one emulator and other games faster on another. For instance Last Legion UX is faster on PJ64 2.3 than it is on 1964 1.1. Conker is faster on 1964 than on PJ64. I don't know how fast UltraHLE is, compared to the others. Generally speaking, video plugins make the biggest difference in performance, although you still should generally use the fastest emulator. Mupen is generally slower than 1964 and PJ64 though.

Nemu's performance is decent too, if you're interested in that. My guess is that top 2 emulators in speed are 1964 and PJ64.

ZSNES is quickly processed, which is not the same as low latency. It's actually the opposite: as soon as a frame appears, the NEXT frame is calculated near-instantly including the collection of input before output, so your input is basically ~16ms old by the time its frame is shown. Frame delay (so that a core gets its input and is then calculated as little as 1ms before display) is something only RA does as far as I know.

>>
>>163847045
You need a certain level of secrecy that doesn't allow for the creation of a cult of personality to be truly anonymous.

If you want an example of that working, check "Corbeau" , the Dark Engine source code leak (Thief 1, 2, System Shock 2) and NewDark.

Long story short:

The source code got leaked, but Square Enix, the owner is very strict about copyright violations. So no one had the balls to actually do anything with it.

So for a while, there was nothing.

Months later, on some random french Thief forum, patches for the Dark Engine games were uploaded by a new user named Corbeau, dubbed NewDark.

The Dark Engine was practically rewritten from scratch on those patches and they fixed a lot of issues or limitations.

No one has any fucking idea who Corbeau is to this day.

The fact that N64 devs thrived off oman's archive proves that a lot of those other devs are just cowards.

>it's hard to come up with a better analogy
>keeping user data alongside archived media
what are you even talking about?
game folders are for games, not just "archived media" and "user data" like savestates, battery saves, sram, configuration options and other emulator-specific data should be kept alongside the ROM in a folder of it's own, preferably with subfolders which designate these data files.
Emulators tend to do a poor job of maintaining their own data files, and keeping them categorically separated requires that they are named to match their respective ROMs (which emulators rarely do).
On top of the functionality, there are countless other assets which also must be name-matched and categorically separated to be presented in any meaningful way in a frontend.
A game-folder solves these problems, offering a flexibility for asset management and gives the ROM an integrity which is more akin to the idea of a ROM as a game-title as opposed to the ROM as a piece of a data set.
You see, it's actually YOU who are pants-on-head retarded by perpetuating the fucked up paradigm of the ROM-set collection management that MAME employs.

He'll go utterly apeshit if someone adds compression support to msu-1, since he doesn't know math and doesn't accept patches that don't fit his exact rules.

OK, this method of bootrom dumping is confirmed today at 33c3. But the asshole didn't mention his fault injection setup.

I don't know but you have 5 minutes to recommend a really good Mega Drive game that is not the one on the webbum.

Alright I'm not sure what's going on here

Trying to get my DS3 to work on my win10 machine using SCP and lilypad

Folliwng https://emulation.miraheze.org/wiki/SCP_Driver_Package#Troubleshooting

Using:
pscxr-1.9.93-win32
SCP-DS3 Driver Package 1.1.0.136
and the SCP found at http://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-ScpToolkit-XInput-Wrapper-aka-ScpServer-Reloaded

Whenever I disable directinput and xinput under game devices, I get a crash. I am never able to select DS3 native mode.

Is this because I'm using 1.9.93 perhaps?

Man, I have a very small collection of megadrive games and that's kinda spot on, I think I'm only missing 3 of those.

Why is it legal to hack consoles when it circumvents DRM which is illegal under DMCA?
>>
>>163861103
because freedoms.
>>
Do you guys prefer playing the home console versions of arcade games or the originals?

I prefer the originals myself.
>>
>>163861239
Gradius III is better on SNES in spite of the slowdown. Arcade version is unplayably difficult with zero continues.
>>
>>163861103
Because DMCA and its enforcement is illegal.
>>
>>163860074

http://vsrecommendedgames.wikia.com/wiki/Mega_Drive

And that without Mega CD or 32X.
>>
>>163861239
Whatever looks and plays better. Arcades do often, but sometimes they get a 1:1 port on console and manage to add more content so that's the better version.

So basically the 3DS is completely cracked open in every way now, and shit like this >>163857301 should be possible.

Well, for bootrom dumping(to decrypt on PC), he just repeated stuff we've known for a year. He didn't go into details on his fault injection setup. So, not really helpful. But should someone figure it out, then we'll have that shit and custom firmware for every 3DS(sighax).
