Does anyone with technical knowledge know how the future of 3DS emulation looks?

I see games seem to run at a shit framerate. How long do emulators typically take to get from working to amazing? I remember Dolphin Wii support coming out really fast but I also have been told the Wii is basically a gamecube anyway

- The biggest change is getting the interface sane, which is accomplished through libretro.
- 'inline' was added all across the PPU subclasses. Framerate went up by 20% from such a trivial change! (Spamming inline elsewhere does little if anything, so it wasn't done.)
- A fast path was added to various parts of the CPU bus, improving framerate by about 2.5%.
- libco has been changed quite a bit, both for performance, readability, and portability to more platforms.
- A seven-line function in sfc/memory/memory-inline.hpp was replaced, which speeds up ROM load by roughly a factor 6 (1.2s -> 0.2s).
- A section in sfc/memory/memory.cpp was specialized for the common, easy, case. This speeds up ROM load time by about a third.

built on hacks.

Like the problems SP doesn't experience with reicast, since he was on Intel/AMD but Nvidia users had issues with. Nvidia's drivers are built on all sorts of hacks.

Take for instance:
(vec3 += float)
On Nvidia hw, that is allowed and for some weird reason will only increment the first component of the vector, for some retarded reason.

On AMD, that is rejected since vec3s can only have binary operators done on like vectors, such as vec3s. Multiplication of vectors is a special case though in GLSL.

Thanks for the great response. Looks like N64 isn't the only scene where shoddy work gets praised and reused with hardly anyone bothering to improve the code themselves.

I'd much rather write my own emu in that case, if I was more interested in SNES. I thought bsnes was poorly written, but honestly your description makes it sound worse than I anticipated. I think it's ironic that 'NIH' is frowned upon in this scene, but I think it's necessary.

But shouldn't hacks decrease compatibility?
>>
>>163024258

No such thing. There is a "Content Database" directory.
>>
>>163024540
what i meant was, nvidia drivers have a large amount of hacks and sometimes those hacks are used for improved compatibility. Take a look at "Game Ready" drivers. Those are just drivers which hotpatch shader code in the driver at runtime with handmade equivalents that the Nvidia driver devs made at the behest of game companies.

Plus as I said, sometimes the shader compilers allow things they shouldnt, but they do for the sake of compatibility of code (but they could hurt compatibility with other vendors. I found out that out when coding my stuff and had to use AMD shader tools to debug my shaders since they are more standards compliant than Nvidias and I know if a shader works on AMD, they will work on Nvidia.)

Graphics card drivers are really shitty pieces of software.

PlayStation DualShock[edit]
The DualShock 3 has a very good d-pad, which is something that's hard to find nowadays. Very useful for older consoles. It also has 10-bit precision analog sticks, pressure sensitive buttons, and it can be used wired or wirelessly with a Bluetooth adapter.
The Dual Shock 3 requires special software to work on a pc. In Windows, an external program needs to be installed to use DS3 controllers. Use the new SCP Driver Package. Do not use MotioninJoy if you can. On Linux, QtSixA is available, but if you run into problems try xboxdrv. See the DualShock 3#Troubleshooting page if you run into problems.
The DualShock 4 also requires a wrapper to get full functionality on Windows, like DS4Windows or SCP Driver Package.

So should I use bsnes mercury balanced instead of the regular core bsnes balanced? On which version are the two based off?
I use the regular bsnes balanced core and have occasionally framedrops in a very few games and manage 4-6 frames via frame delay.
In mednafen psx software I get 60fps, but only 58fps fps in a handfull of games with 0 frame delay setting, so I have to set on threaded video for a smoother experience that still has some drops. But I think this has to do with the newer core that has been added to the libretro stable ppa. It added hw render functionality, althought it is a separate core. Since this update I have framedrops in mednafen, before I could do 60fps without threaded video on.

>frontend for the libretro api
so, this isn't a good way to describe ra. it may be technically accurate, but it's tomatoes in a fruit-salad. it's better to refrer to it a modularized emulator, or multi-emulator.
RA supposedly is catering to a console crowd, being that it's cores are primarily consoles, the gui is designed for a gamepad etc...so, try explaining even what an API is to a console peasant and keep your drool-rag handy. The fact that you confused them in the first place should be the concern, but take note how they don't give a shit and will call it an emulator anyway.

This is probably a retarded question but I can't find anything about it online.
When using VBA-M diagonal movement is weird, in that if I press up in any moment while pressing left (for example, it works in any direction) it keeps going diagonally indefinetly even when I release the button. This happens with every game, yet it's the only emulator that has this glitch for me.
It happens regardless of my imput method, I tried a 360 controller, xbone controller and keyboard and it always happens. What's up with that?
I also tried redownloading the emulator itself and it doesen't help at all.

As a side note, mudlord ported the joke emu bzsnes to libretro. bzsnes just so happens to be based on bsnes v0.73, the last version to use gambatte for SGB emulation. It is safe to assume someone could use that code to port the real bsnes v0.73 (or classic/plus since they are just improved v0.73) to libretro with minimal effort.

I doubt anyone will do it.

No, OpenEmu is very good if you want:

1. Glitz.

2. Library management.

3. Cleanports of the relevant emulators (no extra garbage like beetle, stays in sync extremely well with the devs upstream).

4. Well-chosen plugins (almost always one option for "weak" and another for "strong" Mac hardware for every extant system, no porting of the 1001 Arabian BSNES Plugins like _some_ frontends we know of).

That being said....

1. The devs are absolute fuckholes to deal with. Do not bother ever reporting a bug to them, for it is pain and suffering.

2. Major releases will require the latest version of macOS regardless of what bullshit state Apple has currently left it in.

3. They will not help you with old versions. At all. Ever.

4. The Mac platform will not even exist in its current form in less than a decade. Mandatory binary signing and App store usage _is coming, don't kid yourself. OpenEmu and all its brethren will be nuked from orbit by Apple in their spaceship campus at this time.

Why didn't he just say so, then? If a dev disrespected me the way zeromus did to those devs, I'd quit the project immediately. Calling it a "poopy hack" is not a good explanation.

Apple actively hinders emulator development on iOS. Like I said, they want all their OS' locked down now, so that you need explicit permission to run your programs on their shit and pay for the privilege of writing code on their platforms.

If the Mac ends up dying instead, they'll count that as a blessing in disguise. They really only want to focus on iGadgets.

yes, a lot. the mednafen saturn emulator works perfectly for everything ive thrown at it. i have reasonable specs (considered high end, in 2009) and it does framedrop a bit still but i get better performance with the mednafen core as opposed to yabause and whatnot. i also notice no visual issues or anything

the only limitation i see the mednafen core having is a lack of savestate support which they are working on. this means no online capability just yet, and games like saturn sonic 3d blast are still a huge pain in the ass to beat

What emulators, if any, have decent netplay? Me and a buddy been wanting to netplay some stuff but most of what we've tried has horrible desyncing issues.
>>
>>163241886
mednafen supports multiplayer with a bunch of cores. its really good in my experience. sega genesis, nintendo, and pcengine have the best netplay in my experience. the super nintendo one is great too but requires a decent machine unlike the others. biggest issue with mednafen is a lack of gui, there are third person gui's but largely they all suck eggs. also you need to either host a 'dedicated' server or use someone elses

zsnes 1.36 and 1.42 have good netplay with a lack of desync issues, but obviously this is zsnes.

try retroarch, this also supports netplay and has a gui, but i cannot recommend it as ive never tried it so don't know how back desyncs are
>>

>>163241886
you know, zsnes is shit but damn was the netpay with the chat was good
>>
>>163242152
znes was what we recently tried. We'd get about one desync per hour, and that was on a turn based game where we could notice, on something more active it'd be trouble.

Will check out the rest though, thanks.

Seriously though, does anyone know?
Before I was playing on mGBA, and I realized that videos were smoother than my gameplay, and realized that software rendering meant I was playing the game at a crippled frame rate the whole time, I don't want this to be the case when I play SNES games.
>>
>>163238343
>>163244672
Pretty sure '60fps' means fullspeed. Easy way to test would be to try a 3D game.
>>
>>163246550

I don't see any options for frame skipping, so I'm going to assume that it isn't a thing. Thanks for the help anon.

Okay, nevermind again. The metadata shows ups while it's scraping, but doesn't show up while browsing. The metadata downloads and appears to be in the correct place. The only thing different with the affected systems is that the games are stored in their own subfolders since they're in bin+cue format.

Newbs to in-depth emulation stuff there.

It is possible to stop sprite clipping on Disgaea 2 with OGL backend?

D3D9 seems to solve the problem, the game on PSP has some degree of clipping when the camera changes for cutscenes but not as hard as on OGL where Adell mom right on the opening goes through a wall, just wanted to know if there is a way to keep using OGL and avoid reboots on the emulator every time i want to grindan.

Btw there is a way to use Mednafen on any type of ISO? The only reason for me to keep ePSXe is because not all of my games are not on Bin/Cue.

After a few hours I found RetroArch to not be what I want in PSX Emulation, the cue list stuff is an unnecessary hassle, it crashes everytime I try to change the window size, it crashes if I pause it at any point to fiddle with Video settings that can only apparently be accessed WHILE a game is running and thus never saves anything because of said crash.

Everything about how it works just seems unnecessary.

But going back to PCSXR I still have this black texture issue around anything with an alpha, a suggestion mentioned turning off texture filtering and I did that but it still does this.

I think so.

It has some slowdowns, for some fucking reason the builds are made to work better on integrated video cards, so having a i7 4790k and a GTX 970 doesn't give quite as consistant a performance as a slower pc with a weaker processor running a dogshit onboard video card.

That was what they told me anyway.

I can't play with sound because of the slowdowns, but if we're strictly talking about framerate, it's pretty playable until you get to double battles or the battle royale.
