Heroes in this game all fall into situational niches that they all excel at, but some situations arise more often than others causing them to be considered "safe" or "high tier" picks. Very rarely will you have a case where a hero is never good, but different maps and objectives clearly favor certain. Kits over others. For example, wave clear and AOE heroes excell on Infernal Shrines because the objective is about killing 40 minions before the other guys, so naturally the heroes with the best AOE are considered must haves on that map because it gives you a huge advantage on the objective specifically.

There is a meta in that certain heroes are always good, some are better than others and certain one's are brutal depending on the team compositions and or map.

Having a variety of maps allow heroes that otherwise fall behind to instantly fuck shit hard, i.e. arms Varian kinda outclasses Kerrigan as a diving burster, but Kerrigan is just fucking nuts on Infernal Shrines due to how her abilities and talents work.

All in all, the range of meta is much wider, and less important unless you're hitting Masters rank. You can pick Arthas and go to town.

Do note it's a team game though. While one person can hardcarry in LoL or Dota, that shit won't fly in HotS. Team effort over individual skill. Much more relaxed due to that, though.

Why do people complain so much about Warcraft heroes? It's there biggest, most successful franchise. It's the only franchise that could actually stand on its own as a "Team Brawler", quite easily infact with the ridiculous wealth of characters available to them.

I get that some people want every character from D2, or every single Starcraft unit to get a name and pretend they're actually somebody, but still, Warcraft still has tons of K̶E̶L̶'̶T̶H̶U̶Z̶A̶D̶S̶ heroes that could easily fit into the game whereas they'd have to start scraping the bottom of the barrel for heroes from Diablo and Starcraft pretty fucking quickly if they got as much spotlight as Warcraft.

I'm the guy you replied to, and pretty much everyone else has it right - each hero has their given job, and while you typically want to spread out your roles to have a more balanced team composition, as long as your team works together and plays to their strengths then you have a pretty solid chance of winning no matter what.

The only downside that I would say that HOTS has compared to Dota and League is that you cannot carry like you can in those games. You can do really well, of course, but it's basically impossible to win games by yourself - you have to have your team back you up, even if it's the worthless fuckup who has done nothing but die all game. There's a saying that's been floating around ever since HOTS came out that I've found is the truest thing about this game:

It is often better to do something stupid as a team than to do something smart alone.

Hots doesn't really have that. You aren't going to get stuck in Bronze or Silver because you can't last-hit, like in League

The "laning" phase of Hots is also painfully forgiving.

Last Hitting was a holdover from DOTA being a Warcraft III Mod and the developers doing the best they could to give the players a meaningful income that was based on interaction to weed out the idiot children who played Naruto Arena and Tower Defenses who were looking for a distraction instead of a competition. The difference between players in HOTS is based on what they do with themselves while they're in lane rather than how good their last-hitting is. Again, for the second time: If you're lacking things to do, then maybe you should stop fucking yourself with your thumb and focus on making yourself useful. Here are some helpful examples on what you can do while in lane:
Prevent the enemy from getting XP, either by harassing them until they hide or outright killing them
Destroy the enemy's buildings, reducing their lane presence and getting your team an XP lead
Ditch your lane to gank another one

It's because Heroes is willing to throw you a bone and try to save you from ELO Hell if you do well in your placement matches. If you fuck up, you'll get knocked down to whatever league you're supposed to be in, and everything will be fine. If you're not a shitter, you'll stay in Diamond or you'll go higher than that.
