So, I'm finally done grinding my first hero to lv 10. The jump in exp for 8-10 was just horrible, I could've leveled like 5 heores to lv 5 just from that grind alone. Probably not going to go past 5 on anyone else for a while.

What are some good heroes to buy? Are any of the ones in the f2p rotation good too?

I like being useful. Pushing towers, winning fights, laying down cc, whacking enemies non-stop, something that lets me be able to feel like I'm being productive. Jaina felt like a good pick for that for a lot of games, but some games I was basically worthless because I couldn't do shit against the enemy team.

Also getting a little tired of playing ranged so I was I'm thinking of getting more of a front-line battler, so I've been eyeing someone like Anub'arak or Johanna or Muradin though I'm still debating whether I should go with leveling the f2p heroes first to get into unranked / ranked (eventually) but I don't want to bring heroes that are just useless either for that case.

What would you guys recommend as good first buys?

Thought about buying Dehaka or Kael'thas too but the couple times I got to try in Brawls, I was a useless shit because I had zero clue on what I was doing so I think I'm going to not spend 10k on a hero I'll be shit at.

You need a healer to babysit him. His damage is bonkers if he doesn't have to worry about dying. Pair him up with a Morales and watch him shred stuff during the laning phase.

But yeah, not the best spot. He's very good if a team is built around him, but just some QoL improvements would be nice. It fucking sucks that you can't dodgeroll as human or lunge as wolf.

If it's Fury: Peel. Just peel and kite as best as you can, only the Butcher and Artanis if the Varian is a massive idiot can get into a proper slapping fight with him. Always pick Imposing Presence or derivatives of it, less attack speed means less heals for him and damage for you.

If it's Arms: Damage mitigation. He blows his load all at once, so Medivh would annoy him a lot, for example. There's a few "become resistant right fucking now" talents scattered across heroes, take a look into those.

Varian is so fucking boring. How do you make a character with 3 different playstyles and have them all be bland? It doesn't help that I was the only guy who could pass for a warrior and had to go taunt build for 3-4 of the games as I leveled him.

Taste for Blood might still be possible to pull off, but probably way too difficult without somebody dedicated to helping you stack, and only on maps where you can access two lanes.

W/E builds coupled with Invasion are just about melting lanes, sort of like Robo-Gaz. Definitely works well, at least until a certain MMR. Take a fort and a half for free while the teams battle for three minutes over an objective that'll do jack squat.

Black pool if you want to be worth anything in teamfights. (but you build Q).
Invasion if you want to steal keeps real quick while the enemy isn't looking. (better on large maps)
I pick black pool most of the time tho so my team isn't 4v5 in fights. You still get decent lane pressure if you take army of hell/hellforged armor/battleborn.
