Rapier is great for ebin hornet ripostes and has some flashy anime moves, but other than that it's meh.
Claw is kind of trash like every other claw in the game, but it has 1 shot potential if you land the whole weapon art.

Well since I'm not entirely sure what you changed I'll tell you what you SHOULD do.

When using the Item Swap script in the general table, either
A: Click on where it says the name of the item you just dropped, then click on the down arrow on the right, and begin typing in what you want until you see it, then click on it
or the recommended option
B: Use the Item Helper thing, search for the item you want, then copy the HEX (MAKE REALLY SURE YOU COPY HEX NOT DEC) and change the id to what you copied to your clipboard

I was on my SL 400 char and I got invaded. I was alone in NG+11, and the guy kept hiding behind monsters, never actually came to fight me. Arrows are practically free at a certain point in the game and are generally worthless outside of maybe pulling enemies from a group to take them out one by one. Also pyromancy does technically require you to invest some stats into attunement.

The reason why dex pyro builds were a thing in DS1 is because pyromancy could be upgraded without leveling up, and 2-handing increased your strength stat by 1.5x, so dex pyro let you invest ALL of your stats into health and stamina and weight cap instead of increasing your other stats, giving you absurd speed and health for your damage output.

Each game has enough tweaks to the damage formula, stats, etc. to basically approach them completely new. All the stats 'mean' the same thing between games, but how they interact changes in little ways enough to totally change how you would want to optimize, plus item placement is completely different obviously.

Cracking the numbers and learning the best way to optimize and try to pull off new things is 90% of the fun of dark souls. The other 10% is actually executing it.

It's like Armored Core or Gran Turismo where you can have more fun with 3-4x more time spent looking at menus and stats than actually fighting.

I'm new to dark souls 1 but I've completed all the other bar demon souls.

I rarely come here but I asked this question quite a long time ago. Does anyone else think that dark souls 1 is harder than all of the others? I asked the question and I remember a few people saying that it felt the same or even easier than ds2/ds3/BB etc.

I find this game fucking mental compared to the others. Casual enemies seem to spot you from further distances, they chase you for longer distances. Being cursed now means that I have to travel unnecessary and pay 3k to get rid of it when on dark souls 3 you just die from being cursed with an amazing looking animation and that's it.

Please fucking tell me that most of you agree that this game is the hardest and pettiest by far? It's an absolute chore compared to the others in my opinion.

DS1 is the most "choose your difficulty" of the games. It can be a cakewalk if you pick the right settings and weapons and go to the right areas, and it could be maddeningly frustrating if you don't.

Unlike the other games, there are a TON of areas in DS1 where you are forced to change your equipment to something just for those few enemies or that one boss, then change back when you're done.

So I'm refamiliarizing myself with DS1's meta, and to me it seems basically:

1. 25% load: Dark wood grain ring + FAP, go with no armor and min-max your weapons and pyromancies so you can get a parry or backstab before they hit you. When it doubt, run far away and spam spells.
2. 50% load: Havel's ring and stack as much poise as possible turtle behind a shield until they are forced to approach, then trade damage until they die from attrition. Bring moss clumps.

Is that pretty much it? Or are there other viable ways of playing that I'm not aware of?

I'd really like to do some stylish melee builds but I feel like the movesets in DS1 are way too restricting for that.

Interesting. I'm assuming you were in the thread yesterday. I played my own basic style on all the others and completed them all, obviously with problems here and there, but this game just feels much harder on every level, Basic enemies are less predictable with their lunging and the knights etc feel like a pain in the ass compared to all the other games. That would be fine to a degree but this game give so many pathways compared to the others and it feels daunting as fuck. I want that, I want these games to be challenging but this game seems like it's trying to be cruel for the sake of it (the hassle of curing being cursed) for example

Just remember armor, and especially the poise stat, is important in DaS1. With enough poise, you can just straight up ignore attacks.

Plus with elemental weapons and Pyromancy you can avoid needing scaling stats and just vit and end gouge instead.

Happy to hear it. Everything feels awkward on this game compared to all of the others so far. No fast travel, annoying effort to cure being cursed, have to rest at the main fire to get 10 flasks and the ist could go on. Preparation is key in DS1, far moreso than the later games. You should always stock up on status curing items when given the opportunity, and you're given two chances to buy Purging Stones before entering the Depths and encountering curse for the first time. I'm having a wonderful time R1 spamming with the drakekeeper's greataxe.

Power stancing claymore (or mirrah's) and lost sinner's sword is also fantastic, since you get the lighter/faster power stance moveset without the damage penalty of zweihander

The mastodon greatsword is fun too, especially it's 2H roll attack, which is a 360 degree tracking sweep. You can punish bosses heavily with it and not too bad in PvP either.

Other picks of mine:
Red Rust Scimitar (strength scaling scimitar = best scimitar,)
Drakeblood greatsword (has the best moveset and gives elemental damage without INT/FTH investment)
Sun Sword (Basically a mini-claymore with thrusting R2s)
Warped Sword (power stance this with an Uchigatana, you get both a thrust and a spinning R2)

Pursuer's ultra greatsword is also pretty powerful. Higher stat investment than lost sinner's sword, but with 140 counter it has probably the highest output PvE damage. Moveset sucks for PvP though.

The Gyrm Great Hammer is also fun.

Hexes are very efficient, because the stat investment in both gives you a higher scaling than the same number of points in either. Also, the damage modifiers (and cast number) of hexes is way higher, so you get more damage for your scaling.

On top of that, dark defense is the hardest to build up and least common in PvP, and it's the most reliable in PvE (fewest enemies resist it).

Hexes are iffy in PvE though, but fantastic in PvP. If you're going against the computer, lightning or fire does best. Lightning so you can take advantage of all the water stages, fire because it's the easiest to get high damage out of without forcing your build around it.

At 20/20 Dark Orb is going to have faster cast speed than any sorcery and do 1/4 to 1/3rd of a player's health bar PER CAST. And it has 20 casts.

Well the nice thing is that you have the stats to use other miracles and sorceries as well. Just swap between different chimes and staffs to optimize damage. Dark orb is your bread and butter but you can still throw out dark storm or lifedrain patch against a boss, those are incredibly effective.

Plus you can still use soul greatsword, great magic barrier, heal/great heal and strong magic shield if your int is high enough.

The ability to get heal AND still have attack spells to spam more than makes it worth it. Especially since the heal miracles (and all the buffs) do not scale with your chime, but with your stat, so you can use the most basic chime to cast shit like Sacred Oath, Great Heal, Great Magic Barrier, etc. to full effect.

Basically, a good hexer should be using all the support miracles and utilizing sorceries against magic-weak enemies, and then using hexes for their primary means of damage.

I would say ideal PvE hexer stats are 25/35, using life drain patch and dark storm against bosses, with dark orb for everyone else. Buff yourself with resonant flesh (or sacred oath) and turtle behind a great magic greatshield. When your HP gets low, throw out a heal.

You'll have near-infinite heals, plenty of dark orbs to take down any boss, the best defensive shield possible, and 2 AoE attacks that absolutely wreck slower bosses while you sit behind your shield.

If anything they were on the right track with the DS3 weapons like the Crow Talons and the Quills. It wasn't at the level of BB weapons, but they were undeniably fun weapons and I'd like to see more of those kinds of weapons instead of the straight sword snoozefest the base game of DS3 is.
