Level 80 PvP was a very distinct thing for a while, especially pre-DLC, but a while into it, too. Eventually it got replaced because all the hot twitch kiddies needed more stats for their shitty builds.

This is a bit depressing. I wanted to make a one-shot greatsword build, but everyone at SL120 is going to have enough health to take a at least 1-2 hits unless they're a mage or I use power within.

And there's no point in using power within unless I'm going with the "don't get hit once" strategy, which negates the point of using poise to get counter hits.

Most people running SL120 have at least 40 vit, right?

If not, not at all. If you do, you can surprise them by whipping out a very large weapon suddenly to fuck up their spacing.

The weapon movesets aren't bad imo, they're pretty good actually.

However you've got a point about the game being less tactical due to the op dodgerolls that are the default roll. In Demon's Souls / Dark Souls 1 you had to sacrifice armor for mobility, but in Dark Souls 3, there's no real reason to ever manage your equip load / take off armor because you get hit with flat penalties for not having a full set on and the only use for armor is to gain hyperarmor at high level level.

Which is better than nothing, the hyperarmor is now much better than in release, but it still feels like the game tried to become Bloodborne without fully managing to.

There's no reason to not keep leveling because of the Soul memery fuckery.

The recommended route is a path that starts right from the bonfire. Just go to where the sea is to your right and you should be getting to Forest of Fallen Giants.

Oh, and level ADP until your agility is something like 93. That helps a LOT in the start.

DaS2 is the most hybrid-friendly game in the series. You can buff/infuse almost every weapon, and even buff an infused one.
There's even an Ultra Greatsword from one of the DLC bosses that deals partial magic damage and has int scaling.

The meta is Estoc turtles as usual for any "old" Souls game.

Rolls really aren't as big of a deal as people make them out to be, roll catching has become a pretty popular skill people have developed and can be used to outright kill people from full health if they keep panic rolling. It's just something you have to be prepared for, often people carry at least 2 weapons on them and 1 of them should be able to run people down and/or roll catch people trying to get away.

Feels like a lot of noobies don't understand a lot of the subtleties in DaS3 PvP. A lot of it is about spacing and timing and versatility of your loadout and consumables and ring selection, especially in invasions. None of these things are particularly flashy so noobies thing they're lame because they just see the surface unfortunately. Like you see someone get parry one-shotted and don't understand what went into baiting someone into that parry or timing it they just think "oh he just pressed L2 and he won I guess... guess I shouldn't get this lame game then" apparently.

The magic is pretty good and fun imo.
You can aim spells by using the binoculars in the left hand weapon slot and then putting the catalyst into the right hand.

Btw, Dark Souls 2 has hand-independent movesets for weapons so you can pair up pretty much any two weapons and left hand weapons still get their full one-handed movesets.

You can infuse catalysts as well so for example if you want to use miracles, infuse your miracle chime with lightning.

Spears are good, as are curved swords. You can also roll catch pretty effectively with straight swords, thrusting swords, and axes depending on your preferences (SS's are the easiest). It's not just running R1's but often it's about jogging up to the enemy's character model, and when they roll you hit R1 at the right time and you land the hit just as they come out of iframes, if you want to see an example just watch iSkys's VOD's since he is basically the roll catch king.

Halberds are good too if you get the timing down, if you're pure strength you can still use gundyr's halberd. I roll catch pretty damn effectively with the RH halberd too because it has good reach and the tracking on the 1H'd attacks are just insane.

Fair enough, just know the longevity of play time in the game is through stuff like invasions. I'd say when I played through DaS3 for the first time on a blind playthrough it was a great experience, I just used a 2 handed lothric knight long spear (a pike) and got gud at rolling.

I can't really understand people who play through the single player a bunch of times though, I've done it myself but it was mostly just a chore of a speedrun to get my invasion characters set up at different SL's. I have almost 600 hours in DaS3 now and probably 500 or so of that is purely from pontiff duels (which is what I used to do, for around 200 hours probably) and invasions, I can't imagine someone doing that much PvE in any souls game seems like it'd get incredibly repetitive and boring fighting the same AI over and over.

Your health decreases by 5% each time you die, a ring cuts the health decrease in half. The health loss stops at 50%.

You can get the health back by using a Human Effigy item on yourself.

The start can feel somewhat punishing but barring the DLC content, it's definitely the easiest Souls game.

DaS1 and BB are the only games out of the 5 Soulsborne games without a death penalty.
DeS cuts your health in half on death, or to 75% if you sacrifice one of your two ring slots.
DaS2 cuts it by 5% per death, up to 50% in 10 deaths, or up to 75% if you sacrifice one of your four ring slots.
DaS3 calculates "dead" health as the base, so dying removes your 30% health bonus.

Lifegems are kind of like slow Blood Vials, but you also get a renewable Estus Flask by talking to the Emerald Herald in Majula.

You're going hollow. The more hollow you become, the less your max health will be. Consuming a human effigy will reverse this. There is also a ring eventually that caps the health penalty at 75%.

I haven't played BB but I'm not sure it's harder than DS3 on the whole, just different. I'd say on average the levels are harder but the bosses easier.

It's very reliable once you get the timing down, it really depends on whether people are panic rolling or not. A good player won't panic roll and will instead watch you and wait for you to actually begin the attack animation before they roll, you'll know this if they get up from being knocked down and don't immediately roll even though you're right on top of them. Most players panic roll though, most players are bad at the game. It mostly just takes practice, you mostly want to get the timing down so that if they're on the ground you're expecting them to immediately panic roll away and you time your attack roughly around the same time they start the roll.

But yeah like I said I gave you plenty of options there. A greatsword with a straight sword (often lothric knight sword) as the 2nd weapon is pretty popular these days. Otherwise gave you plenty of options in my previous post to choose from. I like using a RH halberd and a spear as my second weapon personally, great for running people down after parrying or backstabbing them. It's very hard to get away from a competent spear user.

I'm gonna tackle Farron Keep now. I only need to extinguish the final flame to open the door to the Keep Perimeter area. Then its onto one of the best bossfights in the entire series, atmosphere-wise.

These guys have no idea what they're talking about. DS2 pvp is the best in the series (though souls pvp generally sucks)

The meta is built around counter damage and magic vs physical buffs. Poise isn't worth stacking anymore but physical defense can make you basically immune to weapons under 400 AR.

Some things about the meta:

1. Counter modifiers apply to ALL attacks, not just thrust. So 150 counter modifiers on Katanas mean they do 1.5x damage whenever you hit someone during their windup/cooldown phase.
3. Physical defense is a flat reduction. Elemental defense is scalar. So each point of defense or AR matters much, much more for lower AR than for higher AR physically.
2. Elemental buffing multiplies any existing elemental damage. Since elemental defense is scalar, that means low AR weapons reap huge benefits (2-3x damage) from infusing + buffing. Pure physical doesn't become better until you get some late-game buffs.Late game also allows for much higher elemental defense (dispelling ring, etc.) so that makes physical even better.
3. It's way too difficult to stack poise and poise is way too easily destroyed to really worry about it. It's only purpose is to give yourself less severe stagger against 1H small weapons (daggers, rapiers, etc.). There's a huge difference between 1H and 2H poise destruction though, so anyone 2Hing a weapon is going to be able to do full stagger no matter what.
4. Poison > Bleed in all cases. Bleed is extremely hard to execute and only does 200 damage. Poison will do ~1000 damage over time.

Honestly at this level I pretty much always use prisoner's chain and knight's ring, it's like 20 free levels so it's really useful. Chloranthy is a meme if you're good at stamina management and have grass, and I really don't think using bloodring and prisoner's chain together is a good idea. Bloodring is more of a thing for builds that do rolling attacks a lot like corvian great knife.

It was only an example. I find chloranthy super useful on 60% builds where I need to roll after a risky attack or whenever I need to put pressure. Although grass can literally do the same, I don't feel comfortable using buffs anymore. Especially since buffs other than weapon coating are super shit in this game.

1. Rest at bonfires to restore your weapon durability.
2. Don't blindly rush into a room with a ton of people and no room to move.
3. DS2 is only unfair for people who don't think ahead. Just like all souls games.

The most unfair, if any, part of DS2's gameplay is that titanite is heavily restricted in early game, so if you spend all your titanite upgrading armor or an inferior weapon you can end up in this shitty middle zone after Dragonrider but before you get to earthen peak where you don't have any upgraded weapons.

Grass is easy to use, I put it in that quickbar thing you see when you press start where you get like 5 slots to use to start battles, and otherwise keep my toolbelt pretty minimalistic with estus (if I have ashen I just use it from the menu), embers (for healglitching), blackfire bombs and bundles.

That said even at low levels I'm either using a build that doesn't use a shield and doesn't need to R1 spam (generally attack in 1-2 hit bursts or parry riposte) and can get away with 16 END pretty easy (11 + 5 from chain), or like right now where I'm using a raw +4 RH halberd and +2 BK shield so I've got 18 str (with knight's ring) and 27 health 31 end (with chain) on my SL36 invader. Roughly 30-32 END is all you really need even end game but especially at lower levels.

Besides that my ring slots are pretty locked down, besides 2 slots needing to go to basically +20 free levels, I usually reserve at least 1 slot for hornet and the last slot I can do whatever with but I generally use obscuring because it's just so damn useful in invasions, especially with an offhand xbow but just in general for ambushing people or for getting away from bad situations.

It really doesn't matter since you won't get access to hexes until you're past the point where you can build your levels up. The extra INT and FTH starting off doesn't help you and you'll end up having more than enough levels by the time you reach felkin to make up for any weak stats.

The best hexer is whatever build lets you get to felkin as fast as possible with minimum investments into any other stats. You want to be at 20/20 with minimum.If you think you can get there with just the cleric, then use that. If you think you need more beef, go with any other starting class and invest everything into FTH/INT and you'll be at 20/20 before you reach him.

Best boss to gank co op: Pursuer, for the bastilla kill.

Best boss to be summoned to help new players with: O&S.

Best boss to be summoned for the level on the way to the boss: Mytha the Baneful Queen. It's right after the sun covenant, has 2 hidden bonfires, pate's encounter, a mimic, pharros healing pool, and a LOT of secret items, and best of all, the windmill trick. It is extremely satisfying to help even experienced players through the level only for them to discover yet another new room or item they didn't know about.

I don't consider it a waste when I'm having fun and otherwise enjoying myself, deriving pleasure from it. Really though DaS3 invasions are about fucking with people, making life hell for them. To see them driven before you, hear the lamentations of their women, etc.

I find that you need a shift in mindset to truly appreciate invasions. See, to a duelist honorfag, they see invasions and think they're bullshit because it's often so hard to kill the host and his phantoms, they see it as being "unfair" with the chugging and the summoning of a bunch of phantoms etc. In reality, an invader's only real goal is like the rest of the mobs: to prevent forward progress in the level. The host and phantoms are trying to get to the boss, and you're trying to keep them from getting to the boss. The ultimate form of this of course is killing the host, but it's not always the only way. As long as you're keeping them from progressing, they can't warp out through the bonfire or heal with it, they can't do anything, they're stuck. Even if they camp out at the bonfire, that's what offhand crossbows and greatbows and 30 firebombs are for, and when they run out at you you run away and repeat the process. If they come out you can use the mobs to your advantage, if they seed with a gank well they basically just conceded and you just leave and laugh at how bad they are.

I've done hit-and-run ambushes against ganks pulling them through entire fucking levels before. Even if you don't kill them, you win. Because it's about the journey, not the destination.

I used to agree. I used to think DS2 was really boring until Iron Keep and Drangleic castle.

But once I learned how to start all four paths early on and optimize, early-game DS2 is actually EXTREMELY fun because you're basically min-maxing and the stakes are a lot higher if you mess up. Everything after iron keep is a lot more meh and I want to speed past it faster.

That being said, I still think that they should have just made the ENTIRE game take place in Iron Keep, Drangleic, Lost Bastille, and Forest of Fallen Giants. Those areas are fucking fantastic, why not just make them larger and deeper and more intertwined?

You have to bruteforce one enemy at a time. Learn how to kill one enemy without being hit. Learn the next one. Learn the next one. etc.

When you've learned the level, pop a human effigy and breeze your way to the boss.

Heide's tower is a GREAT example of how you're supposed to play the levels. The enemies teach you how to avoid certain attacks and once you learn that, you can beat every boss the whole level without getting touched.

Another problem is that if you keep trying to rush -past- the bosses they're going to keep respawning. Kill them 10-15 times and enemies stop respawning so you can proceed easier.

Well that's not really true, you are supposed to be an expert pvp'er because invasions are generally the next level of difficulty after honor duels and have a lot more depth because you have a whole level to play with. People don't necessarily have to fight you, on both sides. People can run away, people can chug, basically anything goes, the only thing I don't tolerate is seed + gank but honestly at SL60 +6 and below I run into that so rarely that I don't even think it's a problem and I'll just crystal out.

Still you need to be an expert PvP'er to do invasions, because in general you're going to be outnumbered, with a host that has 30% more health and potentially twice as much estus as you, and if he gets away from you can potentially run back and resummon his buttbuddies. The ideal invasion for me is a 1v3 or 1v4 vs. me using the mobs of the level to even the odds. You need to understand the level layout, mob locations, and use stuff like obscuring ring to really make use of ambush tactics that allow you to win. You have to make use of tools like offhand crossbows or greatbows which many players completely ignore like they don't even exist, you have to make use of the best weapons to be able to handle being outnumbered and potentially even outgunned by downscaled phantoms. You have to know escape routes and when to run the fuck away some times. You have to have patience to be able to wait people out, or have shit to throw or shoot at them if they camp out somewhere and refuse to budge (or have a video on in your 2nd monitor lol).

Mainly though as long as you're preventing forward progress, you're winning. As long as I know the host is stuck and scared, I'm happy. If I can kill him too, all the better, but it's not always necessary (at least not necessary to do quickly, you can often take your time if you develop patience).

I said this when DaS3 came out - The type of person that would seed, summon 3 phantoms and then just gank is the exact same as the type of person who would twink in the burg. Ganking is the exact same shit, only it's considered less of a taboo by "normal players" (i.e people that don't engage in PvP or invade) due to how a large chunk of those people still carry some sort of emotional baggage over dying to some twink or whatever - They see it as invaders 'finally getting what they deserve' or something. Souls brings out the worst of people, It's just that previously the game enabled invaders more than hosts, whereas in this game they sortof inverted that (a lot).

Large leather shield is still pretty mediocre, and you have to beat Pursuer to get the Drangleic shield. I'm speaking more of the middle parts of the area, like from the second bonfire to the Last Giant. I must have more deaths in that area than the rest of the game combined.

The frailty of the hollows only makes things more frustrating. Some runs you'll get the first hit and destroy them effortlessly, other times they use some weird move you don't have access to when you use the same weapon and you get fucked in an instant. The spear and shield ones are particularly bad for this, since they have infinite stamina, the only way past their shield if they choose to hold it up is the unreliable and painfully slow guard break. Even when they pull the shield away from their body to bash you with it, they somehow protect themselves with it. Even the mace, which specifically says in the description that it can break a shield's guard, is unable to overpower them. It's just stupidly hard for the sake of being stupidly hard.

You'd be surprised how effective it is. The best part is that if some faggot runs off to great heal, I can just pop those 3 and get all my health back, too.

I've lost count of the number of people that have broken down and gone full "REEEEEE" because they realized that being a passive little shit had given me too much space. It only feels molasses slow because you're used to sonic fast. As you adjust you'll be more comfortable with the speed.

Most weapons have the same startup frames as DaS3 (straightswords, for example) and some are even faster to start up than DaS3 (ultras). The notable things about DaS2's combat is that most things have substantially more recovery than any other game in the series. You're punished more for missing or for bottoming out your stamina, which means that actually making sure your attacks land is more important.

That's not a bad thing, but if you're used to the games that reward mashing then you'll take a while to adjust

Lot of the criticism towards DaS2 is towards it's PvE, but the PvP has it's issues (as all the games do). SM is retarded, orb issue etc. PvP is fun (imo), but it's a different beast entirely - I feel like you can have a lot more fun making builds in DaS2, but the pace of combat isn't for everyone.

2 is the most different one of the series.
Playing it feels like going from DaS1 to Bloodborne, but in reverse.

It's the longest game by a country mile, has the most bosses, most areas, most content, most everything. However, not all of that content is good. Lots of weapons reuse animations from one another, like DaS3 and there's fewer that really have something exceptionally unique about them moveset or animation-wise. Some shitter bosses get reused and there's a lot of shitter bosses compared to the roster of actually decent ones.

The level design is simpler and more straightforward than other souls games, and often involves series of very short areas, branching paths that go nowhere or reward you with trash, and lots of effective linearity within areas. Think along the lines of the Profaned Capital in 3 and how oddly unrealized its level design was. That area is like something right out of DaS2.

The most notable difference from the other games is the combat, which is slower, more methodical and more tightly balanced. The ga,e tries to punish you for bad habits, like having bosses and enemies that time their attacks to catch panic rolls, more stamina cost/recover for rolling in general, etc. Attacks even come out slower and do less damage if you empty your stamina bar. A lot of the habits carried over from previous games are actively punished in 2

If you really like the series, it's probably with giving it a shot, but don't be surprised if the things that make it different also make it less appealing to you.

One thing to note about DaS2 before diving in is that there are 5 different paths which branch out from the hub. All of them are balanced to be done roughly in parallel, so you can go fucking anywhere pretty much right away and can jump to another path if the one you're on gets too difficult.

A lot of people get upset over DaS2 because they encounter a difficulty spike along one path and don't realize they can take another, easier path to get strong before returning to the thing they're stuck on. They smash their head against an intentional wall until they come to despise it and blame the game for being unfair, then complain that the next path was too easy by comparison.

Paths of progression are very open early on, so be sure to take advantage of that. The world connection isn't quite as good as DaS1, but it's at least more interesting than DaS3

I don't know how you can get to Quelaag completely without being poisoned. If you have the rusted iron ring it makes the run easier. If that's not an option, then try summoning Man-eater Mildred, as she makes the fight a bit easier. DaS1 and DaS3 also have plenty of cases of enemies that pounce you immediately when you turn a corner, even though they couldn't have seen you coming at all. It's called an ambush.

What I was thinking when making them:

Both of them are meant to be heavy one hit damage builds using leo ring and greatsword. A is a glass cannon and B is a brawler

The first is a one-shot build that uses power within to get off a few 1-2 hit kills against slower builds, and pyromancy to bait attacks against faster builds (with flame surge stagger) to get the counter hit

The second is a heavy tank that poises through hits and does insane counter damage, built on trading to get it's heavy damage instead of dodging, so that I always win trades instead of having to stun and dodge.

This is true. In DS2 the rule is:

R1? Two hits, max, any more and they will roll and counter. If they have a small shield or dagger, expect to be parried on the second hit attempt.
R2? One hit, max. Any more and they will backstab .
Roll? Roll twice, max, and never in the same direction. Any more rolling and they will punish you when you exit. Sometimes they will punish after one roll.
Using a shield? Block more than one attack and they will walk up and shield break you then riposte. Drop your shield whenever you are not actively attacking, and always roll rather than block heavy weapons to avoid a stamina break.

The heavier the weapon, the more likely the punishment. It's rare to get hit 3 times in a row and usually means you fucked up roll timing.

You can only coop in areas where the summoner hasn't yet killed the boss(or all of the bosses if the area has multiple ones).
There are some areas you can't co-op in like transitional areas or certain special areas.

You have to be in human form for summoning.

Notable mentions: Forest of the Fallen Giants, Lost Bastille/Sinner's Rise/Belfry Luna.

I really wish they did with Heide's tower, Iron Keep and Drangleic castle the same thing they did with Lost Bastille and basically make it one sprawling, cohesive area with 4-5 bosses centered around a hub. Drangleic and Iron Keep felt way to linear and they were way too short to really enjoy.

But the first few minutes of finding Drangleic castle got my heart racing, as well as the first time I entered Iron Keep and the whole game opened up to me. I think they're both as good as when you discover Anor Londo for the first time in DS1 and realize that there's more to the game than just decrepit sewers.

Not only can you cheese the shit out of it with any ranged attack method (not having one is basically a self-imposed challenge or a cosplay build, your own fault in the game that favors hybrid mageknight builds and has stuff like Strength bows) but it also got nerfed when the PC release happened so the spells don't even home in on you anywhere near as hard as they used to. You can basically jog diagonally and melee the entire area now.

I said "realistic". For Honor still has slow telegraphed overheads and pointless SPINNING. And also the completely ridiculous Revenge Mode mechanic.
That being said, For Honor gets bonus points for throwing in stuff like halfswording and mordhau, and the balance of "cool" and realistic in terms of movesets and armor design is pretty tasteful. The combat system itself is also fairly evocative -of- more realistic swordfighting, with its emphasis on stuff like parrying and grappling.

Truth be told, a completely hard-realism swordfighting simulator would probably be fairly boring outside of choreographed matches, unless the controls are insanely good. For Honor is probably a good middle ground between "every weapon is a lead baseball bat or sledgehammer, even if it's a sword" of Dark Souls, and more realistic combat.

The only thing i got from 4 hours in ds2 is that i really want to replay ds1, bb or 3 instead.

Well, for what it's worth what they showed us of Forest of the Fallen Giants mashed together with Drangleic Castle with the pre-cut lighting, it did look really atmospheric.

Carthus Shotel is pretty good for finishing up stubborn turtles. The shield bypass is not too high but it adds up, and it's a curved sword of decent length so it isn't a bad weapon.

I keep a Sharp one on my Dex build and it has proven useful to me even if it isn't Refined.

Other shield bypass weapons like Man Serpent Hatchet are harder to land on turtles, you force them to roll if they want to avoid the damage but the swings are easier to dodge than the Carthus Shotel's.

I never used Darkdrift, so idk how it is.

Anyone here play the older armored core games on PS2?

I'm making a game hack for Armored Core Last Raven to make the gameplay more dark-souls like, by making it more ground based melee shooting with more stagger/impact and dodging. Except there's no quick dodge / roll and instead you have to use cover.

Anyone whose played both games got some cool ideas I could implement? I've already done things like implement a more DS1-like poise system so that your weight class determines how badly you get pushed around, and more deadly melee / heavy attacks so that people can be killed in 4-5 strategically placed hits like dark souls instead of requiring a lot of shooting, and a more slowly restoring stamina bar. Still keeping vertical flight though.

Every souls game has favored right arms more than L arms. Dual wielding is still the most viable in DS2 than any other game.

It's not really auto aim but "fuzzy aim". To get leading on the enemy you have to still follow them around your screen, but you have a buffer zone (lock box) where they can move around without losing your aiming.

And that being said, removing that would ruin the whole game. The point is you're supposed to be moving fast enough that even auto aim isn't enough to hit you.

Lock on in dark souls is way more of a crutch than in AC

Only the Bandit Knife is worth using, and you have to use the bleed buff with it. Even then you're probably better off with the Barbed Straight Sword in a lot of cases.

It doesn't double your Str, it just lowers your equip requirements. The added damage doesn't come from more AR, it comes from moveset modifiers

Moveset modifiers for most swords are:
1HR1: .98
1HR2: 1.2
2HR1: 1.15
2HR2: 1.4

It varies (Rapier 1HR2s are 1.27, most twinkling titanite weapons have higher modifiers,) but they're all around those numbers.

Moveset modifiers were in DS1 also, but they were applied to AR before defense, so if your AR was close to their defense, you could get a huge damage boost by 2Hing. DS2 applies them after defense, so ideal movesets are no longer defense dependent.

Carthus Shotel is the best weapon that shield-pierces. The piercing is minimal but it's a goddamn curved sword with comparable reach to the cardcaptor so that automatically makes it amazing. Curved Swords in general are the best weapons for pressuring shield turtles so being able to chip while you pressure is ideal.

Manserpent Hatchet is the highest damage shield-piercer but it's a relatively slow axe that loses outright to most turtle weapons that are typically paired with shields.

The Warpick also notably pierces shields and it has HA that will beat out spears, thrusting swords and SS, but it's a little too slow to keep up with a good turtle.

Darkdrift can also pierce shields, which is important because the WD is basically unpunishable and a turtle basically has to do something aggressive to deal with it.

The core issue with shieldpiercing is that you tend to chip for sub-100 damage and a turtle's innate regen will erase most of that chip for free. Outside of finishing off someone with like a sliver of HP, most shieldpiercing weapons aren't great anti-turtle options.

The best way to counter turtles is just to play an int/fth hybrid with dark-infused meta weapons, since they chip for much higher than shield-piercers and don't lose to meta weapons.
