Both of those ships are being reworked, the cutlass is undergoing rework now and it looks awesome, the 300 series is next after they do the F8 Lightning. seems like a solid line up of intercepting and grappling/tractoring onto ships. but if you are stealing cargo im not sure how much room you would have in the cutlass with a dragonfly in there too

Totally possible, just make sure you use fixed maxed sized weapons, KB+M players will have an easier time hitting you with gimbals than you will but gimbaled weapons are always a size lower than their hardpoint, with the right fixed weapons you can pop them quick enough

You're right, ship combat is garbage in this game, I will probably get bored of it and hire plebs to do it.

Last time I jumped in to battle royale I got 1-hit in my sabre by broadswords I think, either exploit or aimbot. So much for "Sabre is overpowered with a shield exploit". Then I tried just focusing on a single player, no matter how much I hit them, they just tanked the damage. After about 5 minutes I just alt-tabbed and closed it. It's pretty garbage desu.

I only got the Cutlass black because I have a CCU to a M50. I rented one with REC, and was just meh. I read up on the Cutlass and saw the rework. I'm much more ok with it now. I upgraded my 85x to a Freelancer Dur then CCU to a 350r so I have LTI on it.

Why cant I swap it for something that makes the ship itself better. A fighter isn't protected by Cap class shields and can be easily destroyed rendering the empty hangar useless.

Let me make it into something else, such as:
A BFG turret
A shitload of vertical missiles pods
A bunch of little gun turrets.
An EWAR array
A FleetCom nerve center
A Barracks and drop pod launcher
A friggin huge cargo hold
Anything but spending half the ships volume to appease the pocket carrier autists.

They might've taken a course on the Littoral Combat Ship, which has a similar design. Though the LCS is significantly more modular than what we've seen from the Polaris so far. The idea is that what you put in the hangar extends the mission profile of the Polaris accordingly, but I'm not sure how well that will work in practice. Being able to slot out the hangar for various mission modules would be the ideal solution since that's two levels of empty space to fill with whatever the ship needs.

I hope they do something along those lines, but I'm not holding my breath for it.

I like the ship customization in Star Trek Online. Not sure what you means by this. the majority of the ships is accessible internally, also stuff like cosmetic changes to thruster positioning are extremely unlikely because the thrusters deliver thrust in a physics accurate way and move them around would require a complete rework of the ships flight characteristics.

The polaris has 10xS4, 2xS5 32x S3 Missiles Cap shields of relatively high quality to defend itself with. You talk like its going to be a sitting duck for anything smaller than itself, but even 1 of those dual S4 turrets could very easily kill a fighter, and unlike the tally they're positioned well enough to get at least two on most fire arcs.

You understand that you can dump power into shields to make them recharge faster? And something like a hornet will be unable to deal real damage to something like a polaris? A gladiator maybe. Again, it isn't star wars single fighters or even a couple fighters are not gonna go around heroically exploding cap ships. You're going to need serious firepower to get through the shields. And once you do you're ganna need to cripple the reactor or the generators if you don't they're just gonna come back up.

If Chris Roberts other games are any indication, fighters are gonna do diddly dick to corvettes and larger, but the Gladiators, Retaliators, and any other ship that can mount torpedoes are going to be priority target #1 when they appear if you've got a capship on your side.

People seem to be missing the concept that turrets are currently only geared for larger ships with low maneuverability at the current juncture. I really hope CIG manages to fix their viability on smaller vessels, but barring that the Polaris seems to be about the minimum size for turret viability. Even a Hull-C probably moves too quickly for them to properly target.

Depends. Both iterations had the same role, a multi-purpose scout frigate. Main difference was size, cargo space, and drive core strength. The cutlass is probably gonna be the most common ship in the verse, The Peoples Starfighter if you will. It's flexible capable easy to maintain and cheap. Battlestar is a generic Sci-Fi term, Just the word used to define the differerences between:
"Battle Carriers"/Battlestars - Balance of Gunnery Fightercraft Surivivability and Speed
Battleships - Firepower and Armor at the espense of speed and all fightercraft.
Pure Carriers - Speed and Fighters with little armor and defensive weapons only.
Battlecruisers - Guns and Speed at the expense of protection

Most Sci-Ci Cap ships fit into one of those categories.Though actually Pegasus isn't any of those, its an escort carrier more of a size with a cruiser.

ED has pretty good weapon sounds, save for the railguns. I feel the impacts are weak, though. You can't even tell you're being hit sometimes. Cannon rounds don't shake the ship, plasma doesn't hiss, lasers just crackle and pop...it doesn't feel visceral enough. But when it comes to pressurized cockpits+ship weapons it should be like thunder going off, shaking metal and glass alike. For handheld weapons in pressurized areas it should also be much louder than it is now.

Turrets are required on big ships or you'll never do any damage to a fighter class ship or a SLF one if you don't get the jump on them. Even if you get the jump on them if you don't kill them immediately they'll be out of your view for the rest of the fight.
The small hardpoints especially should be turrets. The damage difference between aim-type on Class 1's is negligible compared to bigger hardpoints.

What is frustrating is that Frontier will never acknowledge that this is an issue because there are members of their fanbase so vocal that they drown out everything else. Should those ships be gotten in a few hours? Of course not. But for people that understand how to play the game, and what to do, it should not take hundreds of Real Life Hours. I honestly felt like I wasted my time after my ED play sessions, more than other video games.

Other times I would log on to play, look at my ships and their jump ranges and simply log out out simply due to how discouraging the game's respect to my personal time is. It actually reminds me, when driving around (in real life) I occasionally hear a commercial on the radio for heater repair. The narrator makes a big deal about how customers base the schedule of their day around when said repair person is supposed to show up at your home. The Elite universe has ridiculously tough hull materials and armor anyway, to the point that shields are entirely optional. Your typical Core Dynamics ship has armor that's several times stronger than its shields.

ED ship hulls are stupid strong and massive compared to projectiles and there's not much to impact on when shit bounces off shields.

Some weapons can get force shell modifications though, so they have specifically-crafted explosives to knock other ships around. Get hit by one of those in a tiny SLF and you may as well self destruct the thing because you're never recovering from that spin.

Both games are self contained enough that you can play 2 without playing 1. Freespace 1 is really dated though. I would recommend starting with 2 if you can't deal with 1. There are probably some graphical mods for 2 which make it look somewhat presentable.

Combat spec comes down to a mix of personal preference and efficiency.
I personally love DAKKADAKKA, the bigger and more DAKKA the better so I have 3x Class 3 Multi-Cannons. Then I like the Cannon because I love the idea of just having a huge gun firing huge and explosive slugs. It also does quite a number on a large ship's modules.
Lasers should almost always be in combat spec; unless you want to make a build out of one weapon type or modify several Multi-Cannons with Incendiary Rounds. I would strongly recommend at least the small hardpoints being turrets though, you need something to cover your massive blindspot. I personally prefer both my Smalls and Mediums as turrets but like I said: personal preference.
At least 1 SCB+Heat Sinks is typically a must for any ship with good shields that you're going to be using for combat at any point.
If you don't want the Cargo Racks just in case you can replace it with Hull Reinforcements or any other utility modules of your choice, like Hatch Breaker and Collector limpets for pirating.

Do you let fighter selection play a role in hardpoint selection at all? Or the other way around? In other words, if I go for max dakka should I have a thermal-based weapon fighter, or is the role of the fighter typically more to harass and distract? Talking combat, not necessarily to help run away.

As for the other modules I'll probably stay with the config posted, although I might drop the DSS or the planetary vehicle bay for another cargo rack.

Unrelated but has smuggling changed much lately? Last I did it was when Sothis was a new thing, and the general consensus was not giving a fuck because you're making way more money than you're being fined. Does it hurt reputation with superpowers much if you get caught? Does it even matter if I'm only doing it occasionally for rank up missions?

Chris said (read: thought) that they had a vertical slice of Squadron 42 almost ready for CitizenCon. Of course, it wasn't, but there're two possibilities here:

1) Squadron 42 was fairly far along, but not quite enough to do the demo Chris wanted. Typical Chis Roberts underestimating time for completion of development tasks. If they were waiting on the FPS animations from 2.6, then this is a possibility.

2) Squadron 42 was nowhere near complete, and Chris has no fucking idea what's going on in his company. I find this harder to believe, since Chris is a megalomaniacal control freak, but it's possible.

With that in mind, Squadron 42 depends on a lot of the tech in 3.0. If Squadron 42 was almost ready in August, then 3.0 was almost ready in August. If not, then we could be waiting a while.

But this is all pointless speculation. When 2.6 gets released after being delayed to January and they put up a schedule report for 3.0 we'll know for sure that we're getting 3.0 in July. :^)

Only the flight control itself matter, the rest : shield, radar, power are only a matter of balance. Even the Connie is still small enough to dogfight.
For bigger ship dependent on turret, they won't fly like fighter so their flight model matter less. They might as well be counted as moving station (Starfarer & Caterpillar)
Torpedo ship like the Talli would need to be reworked anyway once torpedo exist.
Next, turret can be brought from useless to cheaty in an heartbeat. If they ever add some sort of auto-targeting where the players 'refined' the firing solution you can expect some players to lobby that it should be 100% humans controlled "no cheat".

Last, I said maybe necessary because you need to see the return and meta game from the player before you can set all those shield value, missiles & auto-turret efficiency.

Don't matter if they don't have a full view, maybe we will get another flight change pass.

There's more and more game who boast about their graphic, the size of their map or procedural generation but their gameplay stayed the same as 10 year old games.

This sums up what I think is Frontier's biggest issue with Elite. The only thing pushing players to continue playing is getting the next ship they want. Once you get that, there's not really much else to play for, and many players realized that before they ever got their dream ship and just stopped altogether.

If they would allow player factions, fix instancing, and remove solo mode (or at least truly segregate it so that credits & assets can't be carried over), they would fix a lot of their problems.

I love how forumdads complain that using things like 17 Draconis to make money hurts the in-game economny by introducing an influx of cash that shouldn't be there, but then spend all of their time in offline mode.

Games are supposed to be fun. You play them to have fun.

If you implemented progression you are required to arbitrarily separate its content in to different groups and place more arbitrary requirements on encountering it. This often leads to separating, isolating and sometimes alienating different groups within the game. For example the pay2wins vs the poopsocking autists. Or the "elite guild raiders" vs "weekend warriors".

Games don't need progression, or grind. If you were right on this I'd agree with you.

It depends what you call progression. If my character becomes better in some way, sure. If it requires me to spend hundreds or thousands of hours to get to a specific level then not really. For example, cosmetic items make good sidegrades, but in the case of Guild Wars 2 they required insane amounts of grind, hundreds of dungeon runs. The costumes didn't really add any progression either. Just customization.

If you were able to spawn with any ship that would eliminate so much conflict in the game. Conflict gives games substance, it makes your choices matter. The risk needs to be there, and risk ties in as a form of progression.

SOME grind and progression is needed to make your choices have weight. Especially in a game based around community and factions.

Not him but no. An Idris is a group ship, an M50 is a racing ship with poor weapons. They aren't supposed to meet 1v1 in combat.

Giving out free Idris and M50 will cause people to do different things. You'd see emergent gameplay like people messing around in M50s crashing in to stuff or racing or things we haven't thought of yet. You'd see people crashing Idris in to each other, and even racing them, or playing Battlefront, i.e. emergent gameplay.

If you introduce "progression" or grind in to the game, this won't be possible except for people who paid $1000 or forced their org members to pay for it.

Fun doesn't need grind. You've seen CR say he's amazed at the kind of things the community have done which he didn't anticipate. To be fair, he'd see even more if he didn't put different tier ships behind paywalls. Free fly for alpha and Arena Commander would be better.

Also, anyone defending grind in Star Citizen should consider that they've let hundreds of people buy $2500 capital ships which will be there on day 1. So your arguments of "it will make them less special" and "I want to feel like I earned my ship" are irrelevant since you will see them flying around everywhere.

What you do with the content determines the fun you will have. Not putting them behind a treadmill and forcing people to all march along to buy them.

As of now? there's no reason to choose the gladius but I think the idea in the PU will be that running escort missions in a gladius will give you better profit margins allowing you to potentially leapfrog the F7C and upgrade to a sabre, super hornet or some other yet-unannounced top-tier fighter. From what I can gather, 4eyes dumped his boyfriend from his personal life and the design team. The boyfriend came here and leaked their trailer vid for the final TNGS along with a creepy vocaroo. CIG got a little pissy that the winner they had groomed was on the internet before the final show. Reddit ate it up, upvoted the ship because it had neon everywhere in place of functional design. I think 4eyes and the boyfriend had a bit of a lovers tiff here but that could have just been other anons.

Jumping in here. Titan has a different looking canopy, a rounded shape whereas the other three ships mentioned look square, flatter, doesn't have the same engine intake as vanguard or sabre, color scheme is different, has a curved looking nose, little folds in its wings, actually if you want to take if further, it has COMPLETELY different wings than the retaliator, sabre or the vanguard. The most common thing they share is the v-tail.

The Titan is not like the others.
