most of these CM3D2 modding guides are outdated as fuck.

For example, MaidFiddler requires UnityInjector, which requires ReiPatcher, for which Sybaris is apparently a substitute (though it's not explained how), although both UnityInjector and ReiPatcher haven't been updated in forever and it's not specified for which patches Sybaris + MaidFiddler are valid for, installing the latest version of Sybaris does not give me the folder structure MaidFiddler claims I'd have after installing it, etc.

I swear, Skyrim and AA2 modding was more straightforward

Get the latest Sybaris download. Extract.

Drop the Sybaris folder into your main CM3D2 folder. Do not do anything else. Do not fuck with files or folders. The latest version of Sybaris already comes with maid fiddler built in.

Launch the game and press A when you are at main menu.

That's it. Less than 1 minute install if you do it correctly. It took me 20 minutes to figure out, though

Learning the GRAMMAR and KANJI of Japanese? You can do most of that in a year, yeah.
But learning all the vocabulary (and accumulating the context) necessary to read fluently? That will take MANY years for anyone, genius or not. For a normal dude - that is, anyone but a language savant-, expect 3-4 years even WITH effort. Japanese is no joke.

Well, I don't actually think that's true. It's not actually wasting "years" of your life, it's just an hour or two a day for several years, and as mentioned, a lot of that can overlap with the eroge you play anyway. It's very reasonable for someone with an actual life to spend a bit of time each day going through kanji flashcards or other such tasks. The only thing is that the return on that investment will take awhile to show up.

In other words, it's not that the time investment is too large for people, it's that you don't get immediate returns for awhile, which can be discouraging to those who are short sighted, which is really all it takes for someone lazy to convince themselves to not do it in the first place.

Fortunately playing games with machine translations until I picked up enough context and info to learn without them didn't feel like work at all for me. I still enjoyed the games I played and at least picked up the big picture of the story which was enough for my enjoyment

Though I guess it helped that even before I started I was an anime nerd that had picked up enough of the spoken language to watch a typical episode of something like Naruto without subs so on voiced lines I only had to rely a little bit on machines. It's not much since shonen anime is pretty basic but it's a lot better than starting from scratch I guess.

Giving the npc more personality isn't a bad thing but it could've been done in a way that didn't completely remove all of the information.
I'm for changing things to make it fit in English more as Japanese can be a bit dry, but removing info to change it to something completely different is pushing it.

You have to walk that fine line between giving the new audience the closest thing to the original work and making it sound good in the target language to be a good localizer/translator.

Probably something with the way algorythm processes sentences a a whole. Before the change you could select a single word post-translation and see alternate meanings for it, while now it just gives you like 2-3 options of alternate translations for entire sentences. Which means it shits itself if it doesn't get some part of the sentence.
