I don't even remember, but I think it's something like 5-10ms
>>
>>162296071
Considering 60fps, each frame should be around 16ms.

So less than a frame?
>>
>>162298815
Yeah, but that gives you more time to get input before you have to render each frame.
>>
>>162299040
I was expecting a big(er) improvement. Input latency is around 100ms/6 frames or so.

Still, that's a 5-10% decrease, I guess.
>>
>>162295493
Just....WHY?
>>
What's the general state of affairs with PS2 emulation? Is it still improving, and is it likely to reach Dolphin levels of refinement?

I've been contemplating whether to by an old Phat console with Free McBoot, or just go for a powerful PC that can emulate.
>>
>>162295493
He pays for this shit?
There's way better stuff out there for free
>>
>>162301556
>Is it still improving
Yeah but it's likely gonna slow down.

>and is it likely to reach Dolphin levels of refinement
That would imply Dolphin is massively better than PCSX2 which it isn't, the main difference is that the most popular games aren't broken in it unlike PCSX2.

>I've been contemplating whether to by an old Phat console with Free McBoot, or just go for a powerful PC that can emulate.
Get both, a softmodded console is bothersome enough that you're likely to just go for emulation whenever possible but there's a bunch of games that are just that troublesome to emulate that you'll want a real console.
>>
>>162302038
>a softmodded console is bothersome
How so?

Hacking a PS2 is as easy as connecting the drive to your PC and flashing an image to it.
After that it's just installing games.

At that point it's just turning on the PS2, launching Open PS2 Loader, and selecting your game.
>>
>>162302476
>How so?
You have to juggle with several ways of playing games at some point then you have compatibility mode bullshit with less than accurate recommendation out there
And then there's the whole burnt disc shit that you're inevitably gonna try when you can't take that one issue / difference coming from OPL in a game you're playing.

Compared to a softmodded XBOX or Wii a softmodded PS2 is fucking annoying to use.
>>
>>162303039
How about an early model PS3 that can play PS2 games natively instead?
>>
>>162303307
Haven't they all YLOD'd by now?
>>
>>162303307
You're gonna spend an hilarious amount of money (unless you get lucky) on something that's very likely to YLOD and still get the same problem since I'm pretty sure OPL is also the way to play backed up PS2 games.

For FFX and MGS2 I'd say the PC port is worth considering (FFX is the HD version though so if you don't like the new models emulation is better, MGS2 has a new very recent fix that easily makes it the best version) otherwise real console for MGS2 (emulated looks nice during gameplay but cutscenes are beyond fucked and the only fix adds slowdown over the whole game) and emulated for FFX bonus points if the backwards boss bug still happens that shit is hilarious

SOTC is only worth emulating if your PC is really powerful

Okami still is somewhat borked with emulation if you upscale (incorrect filter and tons of Z-fighting))so not that worth emulating.

MGS3 got fixed for the most part recently in PCSX2 and even has a 60fps patch, definitely worth emulating.

I don't have firsthand experience with those but DQVIII/V are generally posted as an example of how mùuch better emulated PS2 games look compared to real hardware so I'd say they emulate well.

DMC is forever borked (area around subtitle and lifebar stays at native regardless of what you set PCSX2 to)

DC2 I couldn't tell you at all
>>
>>162301556
There's been a lot of major improvements recently, including mipmapping which helps with a lot of stuff.
>>
>>162305576
Thanks, I didn't know MGS2 got fixed for PC. I've ever seen a healthy torrent for it.
Perhaps there'll be another collection edition for PS4/Steam

FFX - it's annoying about the new face models in the HD version - I hear there's a mod trying to fix it, but I might not have noticed if nobody here pointed it out.

Really the Dragon Quest games and DC2 are the only ones on my backlog, so I'm most likely to play them out of the bunch

I'm not sure it still works quite as well as the regular version, mapping it to the mouse also kinda works but it becomes kinda shitty to have to go back to the mosue every 5 seconds in latter fights.

It will probably never reach Dolphin because Dolphin supports texture swapping and gives access to the depth buffer for modders. Aside from that it's pretty much better than Dolphin.

I felt like replaying some of the PS2 games, but I'm having a really hard time going back to those old control schemes. I'd like to have a control scheme more like a modern shooter title, but AC2 and AC3 won't let you bind anything to the analogue sticks.
I'm new to using PCSX2, so any help is appreciated.
>>
>>162331095

>>162331238
These are the default controls for Armored Core 2, and all the PS2 Armored Core games have the same default controls. For AC2 the analogue sticks can only be used for their L3 and R3 buttons.
In Armored Core 2: Another Age, Armored Core 3 and Silent Line you can't directly map anything to the sticks, but the left stick copies whatever your D-pad mapping is. The right stick still can't be used.
Armored Core Nexus, NineBreaker and Last Raven allow both sticks to be used.
>>

Change look up and look down (L2 and R2) to be on the right stick y axis up and down. Change turning left and right to be on the right axis of the right stick. Movement on the left stick. Extension and overboost can then be remapped to R2 and L2. Simple enough really.

Retroarchs Mednafen PS1 keeps failing to open an ".srm" file that doesn't exist, its looking for a save file obviously but its the first time I've ran the game so I don't see why it would look for one. I am using the PS1 bios found on the wiki. I know it is a save file because the error message it spit out changed directories when I changed my save file directory. This works for all of my bin and cue files so all of my roms for the PS1, they run just fine on PCSXR but the polygons jumping around in that one makes me feel ill.
>>
>>162341797

I don't understand your problem, does mednafen bail out when it doesn't find this file?
>>
>>162311425
>All of these games work good emulated
No they don't, unless you're blind and retarded or wilinng to accept more or less major issues throughout tghe game.

>the pc ports are worse than the ps2 ports.
Arguable for FFX but you're out of your fucking mind if you think MGS2 is better emulated or on the original console.

>>162331095
>mapping non-analog aiming/movement to the analog stick
That's shit anon why would you do that?

But if you insist try this (by mapping inside the plugin since AC doesn't let you map properly ingame)
>X to L1
>Square to R1
>Triangle to L2
>up and down Dpad to the left stick vertical axis
>L1 and R1 to left stick horizontal axis
>L2 and R2 to Right stick vertical axis
>Left and right on the D-pad to right stick horizontal axis

Now either you keep the D-pad and facebutton to what they are mapped by default (so you have multiple maps per single button) for menus to be tolerable or you can also add
>L3 to down or right Dpad
>R3 to down or right Dpad
>circle to R3
To make it play better.

If you must ask why I change it like that it's simply because only retards use facebutton with sticks since it makes it impossible to and aim while shooting / feather the booster while aiming both of which are almost mandatory if you want to play somewhat decently.
>>

The turbo button doesn't work with vulkan on Retroarch?
>>
I Dolphin suffers from stuttering due to texture cache generation, why can't it be generated incrementally and stored on disk for later re-use?
>>
>>162356018
>why can't it be generated incrementally
You'd need a map of all shaders that need to be generated and the order in which they are used, which has only been recently implemented I think but you still need to generate said map and it takes several minutes at the start to generate all the shaders.

>and stored on disk for later re-use
They already are, but they're invalidated every Dolphin version and every driver version (meaning if you change either everything needs to be redone).

It can be run fine with Reicast, the Dreamcast version that is. Should be arcade perfect anyways, Naomi version is literally the same thing.

You never see this sort of autism on non-emulator development. Like pretty much the entire FOSS community.

There's just the odd guy that kills his waifu (ReiserFS), the one guy that makes decisions everyone hates and loves (SystemD/PulseAudio) and so on. But all autism is contained within the software.

Emulators are associated with mental illness because they are for people who still want to relive their childhood. That is naturally mentally ill because if someone is a happy, functioning adult, s/he would have no need to long for his/her days of playing video games.

It was the Xenoblade one. I had to correct a totally batshit water color and a visibly fucked up dirt-to-grass texture that was way too dark and stuck out. It's probably fixed by now, but that shit did make it in at one point so I don't have a lot of faith in it.

Is there any option for a Nunchuk-like device for PC?
I've got a Classic Controller USB adapter, but the Nunchuk isn't a supported device for some reason (seriously, what the fuck Mayflash?). I want to use analog movement while using my mouse for aiming, and using a full-size controller with my left hand isn't comfortable. This is especially a concern with the Mario Galaxy games, as accurate movement is fairly important.
I'd also like to have an option that works well with PC games, so having surplus buttons would be ace.

I've seen similar questions, and the PlayStation Move Navigation controller was suggested, but there's never any confirmation whether it works with Dolphin.

So either you get blinded by shitty saturation to compensate for the awful emulation, or you see a blurry abomination just to get Amaterasu to glow as she's supposed to in the game.

Here's an example of the configs of PCSX2 where you don't get glow and ghosting, and it looks like garbage.

The color is plain wrong in this pic. Ammy looks fucking gray and it's supposed to be bright white, the story mentions this detail like 10 times. It's the color AND the glowing effect that it's missing.

I tested them myself, I even just retested them myself with the latest nightly right now.
Okami still has incorrect afterimage effect and Z-fighting in places
MGS2 still has cutscenes that will break randomly, although they don't slow down the emulator massively like before (also fixed similar problems with ZOE2 cutscenes which is pretty neat)
DMC still has a native blur around HUD elements

>>162415017
>This is how the PS2 version is.
Nope, the PS2 version does a different blur effect than the one being applied by PCSX2 , the afterimage is much less defined and way more transparent, the new HPO hack kinda makes it more bearable but it's still not quite there.

Fair enough.

I believe that most people that want to emulate a certain system (like the PS2) will do so only for a handful of games and actually play them very sporadically. These also tend to be famous titles that emulate well.

It really isn't worth buying/keeping a console unless you use it often.

mednafen PSX does have savestates. The saturn version however doesn't seem to have them, at least judging by the code. There's no implementation of "StateAction" in ss.cpp (the callback mednafen uses to handle saving and loading savestates).
>>
>>162434583

If you're looking at the source code and can't even find it, then it's a good bet it's not yet implemented. Considering the emulator just got "complete" region support with its most current revision, this is hardly surprising.

Patience is the key.

Actually that surprised me because savestates are a useful tool when debugging an emulator. For instance you can use them to easily reproduce a crash or a critical section of a game. It's also useful for end user bug reports. So I imagined that Ryphecha would've implemented them early on. I also think it's easier to add them incrementally than all at once. It's rather tedious busywork, especially in a language like C++ with no introspection.

The Ryphecha works in mysterious ways.

Notice how Ammy is not white and the rice filter is missing? That indicates pcsx2 is emulating the game as it should.

If I want to emulate the quake experience, what was the max resolution in 1996? Also what is quakes native res? Quakespasm defaults to 800x600.

Also is there a site where I can look up the recommended display resolution for 90s retro games, like for example rayman 2?
>>
>>162450762
320x240(?) was both max and native for poor people. Software 640x480 for people with Pentiums. I think you could go higher but it was unplayable. QuakeGL changed it, but it was released months after, I think.

Like everyone else here, I take Squarepusher's word as the word of absolute God. But the other day he was porting some piece of shit emulator and when describing its god awful codebase used the analogy "it's like trying to butter corn with your dick".

Now, at this point in time, I had never attempted to butter anything with my penis, so his analogy failed to properly describe the true extent of the code's shittiness to me. I simply could not stand the idea of not knowing the exact degree of struggling SP was enduring as- again, like all of us here- detailed knowledge of his suffering is the only thing that can bring me to sexual climax anymore.

So I got out my cock and a fresh cob and gave it a go. I can now safely tell you that his analogy was non-sensical. The combination of warm butter and the bumpy texture of the corn actually felt really good on my shaft.

I did a bit of experimenting so I could kindly recommend to SP that the next time he needs an accurate dick buttering analogy to describe code he instead use "its like buttering a piece of toast with your dick". The texture is coarse and abrasive and you get all kinds of crumbs in your urethra. Entirely unpleasant.

If more people could get the word out it'd be much appreciated.

Would a N64 level FPGA be that expensive? You could do extremely accurate SNES emulation with it and make byuu happy. The CPU/GPU in the N64 is of a large enough manufacturing process (350 nm) that you can read with electron microscope.

Much more expensive than a N64 and a flashcart/all the games you want to play regularly, that's for sure.

99% of everything out there that pretends to be a 'multi-system emu' is either

a - using libretro cores for 90% of its 'systems', or
b - using retroarch directly

Since you were smart enough to change from DX9 mode to DX11 mode it would suggest that OGL mode in relation to graphics would at the very least ring a bell, but I guess you just changed things randomly expecting something to happen which isn't gonna work.

>How many emulators do you all have?

I'm an acurracyfag. Accordingly, I only go for consoles that have emulators which focus on that attribute. It makes for quite a spec bump compared to what users with other needs may be able to get away with, but I feel it's a fair trade-off.

>And do you prefer to have the entire set of games from a console, or just a few gems?

I acquire the full set wherever possible (or, in case of the Sony Playstation, desirable). For cartridge-based systems, I use No-Intro. As this was not possible with the 2600 or Intellivision, I used a heavily culled GoodSet (no, demos, no unlicensed, and it damn well better have a [!] after it) and the full TOSEC set respectively.

For disc-based systems, I try to stick with Redump. Unfortunately for the Turbografx-CD this wasn't possible without winding up with a pile of Nipp releases and little else, so Trurip was substituted instead.

But regardless of which project I source from, the constant rule is this: no bad dumps, no demos, no unlicensed shit. You would not believe the fucking _mountains_ of unplayable garbage this cuts down on! ;)

Oh yeah. I forgot a part.

Of course you'll need frameskipping. x1 or x2 works well, depending on the game. Auto frameskipping was very buggy in my experience.

x1 Frameskipping basically knocks down the FPS from 60 to 30, x2 knocks it down to 20. x3 to 15, x4 to 12...

If you're playing turn-based games, it's not that big of a deal. To save on battery life I once played a little with x7 frameskip, which gives you silky smooth 8 FPS. It was actually very playable.

>Any tips and reduce the input lag?
First off don't play on a TV but an actual monitor (TN is preferable), if possible use a CRT instead.

In your GPU control panel try finding something that reads something like "maximum prerendered frames" and set it as low as possible (don't bother setting lower than 2 with Nvidia it doesn't change shit iirc)

If Win7 disable Aero.
If Win8 kill the dwm.exe in your task manager.
If Win10 you can't kill desktop composition because MS hates you.
If Linux use KMS/DRM (requires specific drivers).

I know RA has more options that help reduce input lag in general but I wouldn't be able to help you more, try reading the input lag section of the wiki maybe it has that info.

I use the TPB torrent, it's definitely squashed. It's a 7z file for each console, and each game (E, U, J) is inside its own 7z file inside that. So you have something like this:
Nintendo 64.7z/Perfect Dark.7z/Perfect Dark (U) (!).z64
With a 64GB card (cheap these days, like 15 euros) you can fit in all the No-Intro sets (44gb)
With 16GB you can get all the relevant ones in.

More expensive that buying a used console that's for sure. Synthesizing a complete system (which is normally made out of multiple independent chips) on a single FPGA requires a relatively advanced chip. The frequencies involved are not tremendous but you have a lot of logic to cram in the LUTs.

I'm not familiar enough with FPGAs and hardware design in general to guess which one would fit an N64 but I can make a quick survey of the projects available online:

https://github.com/led02/psx_fpga PSX implementation for FPGA, targets a ~$5,000 Virtex-7. Probably overkill, but who knows.

https://danstrother.com/fpga-nes/ FPGA NES, targets a ~$500 spartan-3 based board. The FPGA alone is a lot cheaper (~$50), you could probably cut the price significantly by designing your own board. Good luck with that. Would probably still easily cost more than $100 even with the bare minimum.

http://www.fpgb.org/ GB implementation for FPGA. Apparently it uses a ~$20 spartan 3 FPGA (but that's for the FPGA alone, you'll have to make your own board, including memory, video output etc...).

I can't find many other projects right now but that gives you the idea of the pricepoint. And of course if you want an FPGA "emulator" with enhancements (overclocking, increased internal res etc...) it will bump the requirements significantly.

>>
>>162581294
There are no girls on the internet.
>>
>>162581571
I had this issue for arcade games

I not sure what made it stop but I'll tell you what I did

So initallly a lot of cores wouldnt work, they would be selected then RA would say no core, the one arcade core that worked should have horrible audio crackling issues

I then downloaded the 64bit version with the 64bit cores and everything worked with no audio issues

So apparently I was trying to run 64bit cores in the 32bit version even though I downloaded the cores from the RA program itself so that's why the cores wouldnt start

also maybe you are running n64 or PSX and your fps is low

thank you for trying to help but my problem wasn't related to the cores itself, I had the issue with every core and I did not made a mistake of downloading the 32 bit cores you're talking about.
However I found the setting to fix the issue. I've set this Dynamic Audio Rate Control setting to 0.025 (was 0.005) and the audio crackling issue is gone. Changing the audio latency did not help, but this one did. I wonder though, what side effects it might have?
>>
>>162584143

>>162577769
So you know how to program and would contribute to the project if it were open source?

If not, you have no argument. You're just a contrarian cunt.
>>
>>162581571
Set your refresh rate with the refresh rate estimator.
>>
>>162584143
That setting affects the amount that the audio can skew.

You're probably running a game that runs at a weird refresh rate, like 55, and now it's sped up to 60 fps and the audio is sped up too, making it more high pitched.
>>
>>162584993
alright this solution proved more useful than the dynamic audio rate control setting;
I had my framerate locked to 60 (reason for this is vsync gives terrible mouse movement in certain games so i used framecap instead of vsync.)but i was getting around 58 refresh rate, now I removed the framecap and without the need of other settings, every game runs just fine. (had 58 refresh rate on retroarch before, now its 59.995)
thank you all.
>>
>>162528558
>(don't bother setting lower than 2 with Nvidia it doesn't change shit iirc)

Yes it does, the same setting also applies to OpenGL.

If you want to change it only for DirectX and leave OpenGL to default setting you need to use Nvidia Inspector and scroll down all the way down.
>>
>>162587307

It works, works for both Direct X and OpenGL games.
Games that I can name that you can immediately feel a noticeable difference are Killing Floor and all 3 S.TA.L.K.E.R. games.

Unless, the game already uses 1, then you won't notice any difference also improvement is only noticeable with Vsync enabled, since Vsync aggravates the problem, discarding frames waiting for vblank et cetera just by design Vsync makes it worse while Vsync OFF just shits out all frames nonstop so you won't notice a difference changing from 3 to 1 with Vsync OFF.
>>
>>162588703
This is the setting for OpenGL btw, if you change it from the Nvidia Control Panel it changes both the main DirectX setting and the OpenGL (image) setting.

I'm building an emulation PC I can hook to a CRT TV, using Windows XP to be able to go on lower resolutions. I'll be using a GT7300, which has RGB output. It's gonna be midrange 2008ish hardware, so I won't have much horsepower either. I'm just trying to get the most of loose parts I already had.

What would be the best emulator for each major system that are still XP compatible, are more or less up to date, and don't require that much horsepower? I'm thinking Snes9x instead of bsnes... ePSXe instead of Mednafen (sorry mom)... But don't know what else.

I think I could take a clue looking at which RA cores are being developed for weaker ports like the Wii, PSP and 3DS, so I'll start by trying out the last XP compatible RetroArch (was it 1.0.0.something? I think it was 1.2 was when they decided to abandon XP support). But I wonder if the cores versions currently available will be compatible with it, or if I'll have to track down an older core pack somehow.

>>162658483
>HD5450
Fuck, I know. I just wanted to squeeze some extra life out of old parts I already have, but I might as well change video cards and do things right from the start.

Well I was just gonna ask about the emulator side of things, but since you're recommending a specific card... How do you connect the HD5450 to a CRT TV? Do you need a TV with VGA/DVI input, or does it have a RGB TV Out like the nvidia cards from that time do?
>>
>>162659054
Yeah the problem is that generally people use professional monitor that have VGA ports or ways to easily connect a VGA output.

On a normal TV you'd have to go DVI to VGA then VGA to component/S-video transcoder I think.

You're probably gonna have better luck asking or looking in places like Shmupforums / grovymame if you want detailed explanations.

>>

Yeah, unscale point line or whatever the new hack is called fixes the dot FMVs problems across a bunch of games.

I cross my fingers for a Mednafen Saturn situation on the Dreamcast/NAOMI, and just wake up one day with a new alternative that runs my most played games just as well as the clunky dead closed source that has historically had the better compatibility.

There are games that redream already emulates better than reicast despite being WIP.
Also,
pure C
no hard dependencies
ready for libretro inclusion
written from the scratch
dev isn't a tranny or a furry

>better than reicast
that's not hard. also, which gaems?
>pure C
this is almost completely irrelevant.
>written from scratch
isn't this project several years old now?
>dev isn't a tranny or a furry

Nah, the project is only a year old or so and at some point it was rewritten from c++ to c.
