I think one of the reasons people overreacted was because everyone thought it was the replacement for Modern Sonic even though it was explicitly denied several times.

I can't remember if I had an overreaction about those designs or not, at least I hope not, but I do know I thought Sonic and Knuckles' designs were stupid (I didn't mind Tails, Amy, Eggman, Metal Sonic, and Shadow's).However, they now warmed up to me, but I still prefer the Modern designs.I think I might prefer Boom Amy's design over Modern Amy's.

Hello, Sonic the Hedgehog General!
I am the casting director for Sony's upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog movie. We've hit a bit of a rough spot in deciding who should play the iconic characters of the Sonic series, and thought the best solution would be to ask the fans themselves. So far we've already cast Chris Pratt (seen in the W.I.P. poster design I've included in this post) as the blue blur himself, but we have yet to cast Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, or Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik.
The first responses to this post ending in 2, 4, 6, and 8 will decide who will play the roles of Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Eggman respectively. All living actors or actresses are welcome to be submitted. We hope that our new cast is fresh and interesting!

Keep in mind that Mario deals with talking mushroom people, and that Yoshis and Donkey Kong and etc. animals can all talk. Also, a lot of what Sonic does is jumping on enemies to take them out. I don't think he'd be as lost as you feel he'd be, anon.
I feel Sonic would have a bit of a difficult time with Bowser, just because he's altogether a bit tougher and stronger physically. Might be weird for him to not have to deal with mostly badniks, too.

I get some people are tired of the FFs and want them to take a backseat, but what I don't get is what would be the result of that, though. I think you could rework them a little bit. Mighty is a wanderer like Sonic, but unlike Sonic, is prone to taking his time and smelling the flowers. Also, like Sonic, he likes helping people, but on a smaller scale. So Sonic, Tails, Shadow, what have you, deal with Eggman, Mighty's the kinda guy to help a kid with a broken bike
As for Ray, well, I was thinking, that since Sonic has all the dicksuckers in this universe, give one to Tails. He's a Tails fanboy who looks up to the fox and wishes to be a cool hero/sidekick like him someday

Honestly, I liked the execution because it had character interaction and plot development, which is otherwise pretty much missing from the franchise.
