The dice rolling system to progress and unlock scenes is neat at first, but by the time you beat the game once you'll be done with it. Yes, you do get to maintain your spellbook over next playthroughs, but it's still tedious to fuck with the dice at all in between every single fucking scene at that point.

And since there's no option to opt out, motivation to even try grinding out route #2 and beyond plummets. I was only able to get through two routes "honestly" before dropping it.

Just a reminder that a VN being a nukige is not mutually exclusive with having a good plot/story. If you can look past the contrived initial setup, what progresses onwards from the opening is quite smooth in terms of pacing and how naturally events unfold.

Probably the biggest draw is that rather than being a story that blatantly just hurls sex scenes out of left field with little to no background for pure unmitigated gratuity, Free Friend's entire focus is on sexuality, intimacy, and the importance of human-to-human relationships, in whatever form they may take. It's a nukige where the topic of sex is literally the plot, and not in a "we must transfer mana to defeat the demon lord", "oh no she's gone into heat and we must fuck once and never bring it up again", or Fifty Shades of Grey sort of way.

Some people I've talked to claim that it's "unrealistic" for a relationship to start over such things, and that it's "lazy writing" to try and "force a happy ending". I maintain that the turnabout is a refreshing change of pace, where for once in fiction past grievances are buried for good in favor of a happy future rather than being uprooted and waved around for melodrama.
