Chums was thinking of buying a PS4 slim seeing as the unreasonable prices for current console games has gone down. Loved both FO3 and NV. I avoided the consoles till now. Honestly, no.

It really won't take long to learn this stuff. Even if you had a real learning disability I think you could learn enough to make an informed decision with half an hour in under a week.

I used to move a full sized rig, screen and peripherals a couple of times a week for over a year. It literally took 2 mins to pack up and down. Everything bar the screen and actual box fit into a small backpack.

I built a friends PC for under AU$550 2 years ago and it still runs Siege, Fallout 4, Vermintide etc. at 60fps. Needing a Titan X to play anything above 800x600 is a /v/ meme.

Gaming laptops have made pretty serious leaps in the past few years.

Small form mother boards like mini/micro ATX and an appropriate case is probably your best bet.

I have my PC plugged into both the monitor on my desk and TV on my wall. I can sit at my desk and shitpost or play, sit on my couch with a controller/watch a movie.

I'm not gonna lie and say they're Halo tier, but they're solid, a few rubber limbs here and there but nothing serious. Decent selection and has a GUI and NPC pose tool.

I just went to go look it up for you and saw it was updated with another 60 poses and some new menus. It's got expressions now too. Neat.

its a terrible fucking headache, but you use a bit of both.

you can try it with no mods it should work, select someone in console and "playidle xxx", and move them around with "modpos". and its best if you pause the game world (tgp) and use flycam (tfc)... yeah its a lot of hassle to get a full scene going, but easy to make some quick character snaps.

Because F3 and FNV run on more or less the same engine, I'm guessing it'd be fairly easy to port items from one to the other using a combination of nifscope and the GECK.

I'd like to port the Paulson cowboy outfit from Mothership over to NV and I was wondering if it's easy (or indeed at all possible) to do so.

And no, obviously I'm not going to upload this to the nexus or anything, this is for personal use only. And no, TTW runs like ass on my pc so that's not an option either sadly.

It's not. A lot of items were naturally ported to FNV yet never made an appearance, like the Tunnel snake outfit. Paulson's outfit for some reason wasn't ported, which is a shame.

If you can get TTW to work unlike me, you should definitely try it out. It makes F3 a lot better than it is with all the extra New Vegas features added to it, and the extra content added by the TTW team is extremely well made. Not massively lore friendly you travel on an underground train between wastelands but it's better than simply teleporting between world spaces.

that's odd, I didn't notice any performance degradation over standard modded NV. Might be worth investigating further.
Anyway, some items won't require conversion, just drap and drop the files, then create and .esp to put it in game, there's a shit tonne of guide on the nexus forums/youtube that cover it.

I'd like to clarify what I said on TTW.
I think it's my fault because I'm running 100 or so mods along with it, and TTW is a beast. Performance with TTW off is absolutely fine; not wishing to toot my own horn but I have a very good PC, so it's not a hardware issue.

Also the recommend installation method just didn't work when I tried it. On my old PC I manually installed it and it kept crashing. On my new PC I used MO and I works okay, it just stutters, which is really annoying when I'm used to constant 60 frames when I have the mod turned off. I might try it again with some of the NV mods turned off to see if that works.

-Bethesda obviously took pointers from New Vegas in regards to how to handle multi faction main quests, and the game arguably pulls off grey morality better then any other game in the series(though only NV has ever really tired before so theres not too many games it had to compete against)

The only thing I would honestly say Fallout 4 does worse then past games is the dialogue, and even then, while not great, I dont htink its anywhere near as terrible as most people try to make it out to be.

The issue, as far as I'm able to discern, is that 3/NV actually referenced chosen perks as part of conversation options, as though they contributed to the character of the, well, character. 4 just lets you have a new activate option, and the perk is never referred to in any other capacity.

It's like in the Elder Scrolls - whatever race you pick, people will often react differently, dispositions shift at different rates, etc. Now imagine if you could be a white/black/more white human, or a yellow/brown/black elf, or a lizard or cat, and NOONE reacted differently at all.

That, near as I can tell, is the heart of the issue - in Fallout 4, no matter what you do, your character has no character.

You activated shit via dialogue in older games because that was the easiest way to activate those perks with the kind of gameplay/technology they had at the time.

Now, you can just activate through direct gameplay.

Newer games can, and thus, you don't need that.

That's why most every RPG made today, unless its intentionally made retro, really only has speech checks of some kind.

The only checks they added in the DLC were
1. A medicine check in Far Harbor
2. A robotics expert check in Nuka world

And both were added for the same reason.

That reason being its simply not worth the time or budget to make a unique direct gameplay minigame(like lockpicking and hacking) for something that only ever get used once in the whole game

Dialogue checks only serve one purpose in modern games, to be crutches for time/budget limitations that makes doing them directly unfeasible.

You can bet your ass if patching people up was a common part of the game, they would have invested some sort of surgery minigame(like that had in the early test versions of Fallout 3), and gotten rid of the check entirely.

The basic stock for a pipe rile has no perk requirement.

But no, I was talking more about things like New Vegas, where you need a certain level gun skill to prove to some guy you know a certain thing about said guns in order to get him to hand over the recipe for some handcrafted ammo.

The problem with skill checks is that skill are set up in a linear 1-100(or w/e range a game decides to use) manner, while knowledge of a subject is not inherently linear.

It's entirely possible to learn bit Y about a subject before bit X, thus meaning any skill check based on needing something like 70 in a skill to pass the check is based on an artificial barrier, rather then a realistic need for it. As it is entirely possible one of the first things you read about in a book about the subject was the thing he was asking about.

Older games had to do this kind of artificial abstraction shit because they didn't support having a large range of books, notes, terminals, magazines, emails, etc. etc. and thus needed to abstract it that way.

But with the advancement of games technology, and the mass proliferation of books, notes, terminals, emails, codex entries, and other such things in modern games, the entire idea behind knowledge based skill checks has largely been made obsolete as now instead of just magically learning something but dumping points into a stat, you learn shit by just reading shit.

This is why you don't see them in modern games really. Unless they are intentionally made retro like Pillars, or made in a modern style by a company that can't do anything but retro games, and thus, doesn't take advantage of technological advancements(like New Vegas)

The new survival is rather fun now. Assuming your rig is stable enough to risk a crash killing some progress or you mod in some form of quicksave as a buffer. Although early levels are a pain in the dick as you're a bit too fragile before you get some gear and perks.

I swear, I want to like Fallout 4. It has the graphical updates, the gameplay smoothness, the overall stability that Fallout 3 and New Vegas desperately needed. It had, and still has, so much potential.

And yet, I can't enjoy it anymore. It feels like I'm playing Borderlands, with occasional pauses for Minecraft. Seriously, the Legendary system might as well be the Badass system from Borderlands with the trumptillion weapon combinations that end up being minor stat changes. What's the point of unique items that aren't? The dialogue is bland, repetitive and unimaginative to a degree I honestly thought was left behind in Fallout 3, and with the forced voiced protag and dialogue wheel it just takes forever to make any conversation...with the meme-tier yes/yes?/no(yes)/sarcastic responses ensuring said convo is meaningless. Hell, even the gunplay gets old when half the Commonwealth ends up empty most of the time due to a whole lotta wasted space.

I know this has been said time and again, but I just seriously can't understand how they thought this was a step forward. If I wanted to play Borderlands, I'd play Borderlands. If I wanted Minecraft, I'd play Minecraft.

You're not even given a time limit, not like 1, for the main plot at least. You're given a time limit to save the inhabitants of Vault 13 and that in no way gets you any closer to finding the GECK. And you know what does affect stuff? Things you do within a community. Word doesn't travel. You do bring up the GECK when trying to ask around, but really, outside of a few areas where you do ask, no one has ever heard of this thing.

There is a difference though, between having the main plot be the "main plot", and never giving the player a break from it, forcing them to bring it up at unnecessary times.

And what do you think of NV then, when you're not even given a proper goal? Find the man who shot you? The game doesn't give you your motivation. You don't tell everyone you see that you were shot in the head.

Anyways, the armor is added to gunner level lists. You can still occasionally see vanilla combat armor spawn. However, I don't think I've seen gunners spawn with a combination of mercenary armor and combat armor, it seems to be an either-or thing.

From my experiences, it's a full replacer for all tiers of Gunners, although the armor itself only appears on later levels as the lower leveled Gunners wear Gunner-specific outfits also provided by the pack. If you like isometric RPGs, Underrail uses a similar but more fleshed out system to the original Fallout. Lots of little things affect your dialogue options, and lots of your dialogue choices actually affect things aside from forwarding the NPC's dialogue. I can't really give examples of how well things connect without spoiling stuff, but it's just a really cool fleshed out world. Also it's cheap, the guy is still working on it, fixing things, adding the first add on soon, and from one of the threads I caught on /v/, the dev actually went out of his way to fix a player's corrupted save file as best he could, and even offered a full refund.

I'm making a mod right now that adds an item that collects radiation in the air to produce nuclear materials and acid, on that same note. Anyone have an idea for another building? I thought about making an oil well machine that generates oil, but I kinda feel like it conflicts with the lore a little bit. If it were that easy to strike oil, the resource wars wouldn't have happened. So I was thinking more along the lines of bio-fuels or a machine / crafting station that produces oil in bulk when you mix water, bone, and acid all together.

Critical hits do a lot of damage and, I believe, are guaranteed hits even if it physically doesn't make sense? I don't think I've ever missed a critical hit when using VATS, regardless of terrain or the percentage. That might be intentional since you have to build up critical hits in vanilla.

I can see the argument for controlled criticals since it removes more RNG in the game, but I guess I just prefer it happening at random. Same reason why NPCs in NV did nothing but stand around in one place ala Morrowind, despite the fact even Oblivion had far more living NPCs.

Because Obsidian is a geriatric developer, who has no real idea how modern technology works, and can only superficially ape modern games, but can only design the actual mechanics like some mid-late 90's RPG since that is all they knew how to do.

Like, if you look at alll the cut content for NV, and look at all the stuff they did to try to get it to work, you can see they really had no idea what they were doing.

The Institute was making these guns for nearly 100 years, meaning they were the first group outside the NCR to actually be able to make new weaponry.

Well the Vault Tec DLC lets you route power throughout the Vault structure(which you can build in outside areas after you complete the small DLC questline) without the use of cords.

You can't, not beforehand - you have to be there when they attack to see where they're coming from. Sanctuary Hills for example has several spawn points around the settlement area. What you can do is block routes (concrete works) so they're forced to come a certain path you've heavily fortified.

There's a mod that lets you see the spawnpoints, which anon sort of acknowledged. You can't tell which of the spawnpoints the raiders will use, but you know they'll use one of them, so you can just set up defenses at those locations.

Yes, you can assign people to specific beds. I think by default they'll eventually pick a bed if there's enough beds per person, but you can assign someone a bed same way you assign them to crops, scavenging, etc.

Like I said, I think they'll take a bed by default, so you could just wait until night time or near night time when they go to sleep, and see if anyone's not assigned to a bed. Besides just waiting and seeing, there's no vanilla way to see who is assigned to what task or bed, gotta use mods.

Yeah this is what I did for Piper so the bed I assigned her on was green. The other beds with the red icons are the ones that bother me.

Yeah, basically. If you have more beds than settlers, then a bed will have a red indicator, meaning no one is assigned to it and no one is using it. Like you did with Piper, assigning someone to a bed near their station is perhaps the only use of assigning settlers to a specific bed.

What does it mean for a bed to be "sheltered"? I realize now it doesn't mean it has a roof over it's head because I checked.

I'm using a mod to tell me if my beds are sheltered and apparently some of my beds inside my houses are not sheltered.

Beds are counted as sheltered as long as there is a roof above the bed and that there is a settler assigned to the bed. If there's no settler assigned, then it won't be counted as sheltered. A floor or roof piece will count for sheltered, and I assume the houses placed by Bethesda utilize items and pieces that register as 'roof' tiles to count for sheltered.

To add to my statement, I believe the bed has to be one you placed down yourself. There's a few settlements that will have pre-existing beds, and those will not be counted as sheltered, I believe. Not positive, but you could probably check and test it if you were super curious.

As in, floor tile pieces like the floor-roof combination for second stories. Those should count as a 'roof' to make a bed be considered sheltered. Prefabs should, I imagine they would, but I've never specifically tested.

Note that I've never been exactly particular about happiness and all the nuances. I've looked it up, and if you're using Settlement Management Software, it really doesn't take much to just test the different scenarios.
