Is it possible to build the car without damaging it extensively? It seems like just looking at it the wrong way causes a dent, and too many dents causes you to fail the inspection for "body" it seems.

Try not to bumping into it with your body, use lean on Q. Most of the dents appears because of that.
Also, you can fix that just by deleting meshsave.txt in savegame folder and reload. Game will make new one without damaged parts. It just contain damage model information for body, doors, bumpers and shit like that.

If it's rev up weird you need to adjust valves on rocker shaft. Just scroll them with mouse wheel 18 times down and 7 up for each. It only works properly if you filled up it with oil, so make sure of that before removing rocker cover.

It doesn't do shit for top speed, you need to set lowest final gear for that.

How about the one by the wood-buyer's house, it's long, gradual, and downhill to the right, so if you start going slow you'll need to shift up by the time you're halfway through. If you have the shifter keys as default you'll have a hard time shifting up with your driving hand because the index finger is needed to steer and shift. If you use both hands on keyboard it doesn't matter because you can just use your right hand to shift, but if you like keyboard+mouse you need the shifter keys to be accessible from your left hand or on the mouse; "g" is a long reach from "d" for your index finger especially when you aren't looking.

To change gear you engage the clutch, or incase of a pleb who doesn't know how to drive like yourself, the game engages autoclutch, the clutch disengages drive to the wheels. You should be in the correct gear for the exit as you enter, and feather the throttle if it's a long corner, getting fully on the throttle once you can. FWD cars need constant progressive drive after apex to pull them out. Secondly, changing gear mid corner disturbs weight distribution and cause you to understeer.

Not bad for my first official completion, these guys are slower than I thought. Admittedly I've been practicing for this moment since the day I first played because somebody told me "just take every left to get to town" so I know the second half of the rally by heart, I just had to practice the half from the dump to the driveway a bit.

I suspect you could get to 5:00 with upgrades, practice (handbrake 90s, turn awareness, etc), and some luck; I wasted 5-10 seconds just driving off the road being shit and I think I fucked up something important on the car when I rolled it trying to run the little green car off the road prior to starting the race, the steering felt a little odd at the end.

I also suspect you could win with a fully stock car, which will be my next goal.
