Take him if you get an early altar or double back after you kickstart some defense. Then just kill the dudes as a dude with a dude of stats on your dudely back. Bend time on any non-trivial threat to slow it. Even works on pan lords with enough power. Temporal distortion to juggle ranged guys closer. Slouch fast shit if you can't wreck it. Always keep the mp for twoish step from time.

>>161703150

I was using my rod of detect monsters actively, it is likely Borel was fast enough to dash in after a few steps outside detect radius. I tried to teleport with my stave but failed.
>you fail to use your device properly

Lord Borel on depth 35 it pretty bullshit, I say.

I'm playing a sexy character, so (massively) OOD monsters are much more dangerous.
>>
>>161703446
As far as I know, /rlg/ is considered to be one of the most on-topic of /vg/'s generals. I think the shitposting has gotten worse over the past several months, though, but that's for all I have been here, for all that I can observe and conclude.

Doing what you complain about is sad. The general is for talking about games like rogue. Roguelites have zero business in it because they're here to talk about rogue and games that give the rogue experience. Something roguelites don't do. Either make a new general for them, make /v/ threads or be a mature adult about it like everyone else that eats shit and use reddit to talk about it.

The pastebin has a quick start guide in it which is still largely accurate aside from the presence of dungeon entrance guardians.

Here's the most basic starting ctions
-with your starting fund, by basic armor from the armor shop
-with the rest of the money, buy teleport scrolls and healing items (cure serious wounds is fairly economical)
-take the Thieves Quest and level up a few times there.

Is there a mod that removes the fucking mooses in CDDA?
I started in the wild 3 times and 3 times in a row, after all the attempts at survival and encountering many other things, at the end every time I was killed by a fucking moose.
How do I even survive innawoods?
>>
>>161717735
Forage and skim fields for map extras with corpses, Get a sharp, cut shit up for rags to thread to make tools. Craft chain what you can to get a weapon with block, some storage and armor, and make some leather or makeshift funnels and waterskins/canteens. Use sprint and shrubs/saplings to get distance and kill shit. Eventually you'll have a decent resource map notations together. Do and keep doing tons of foraging for metal, cans, and containers. Keep ranging through fields for hordes and map extra corpses. Settle down, Take your shit out of your travois or whatever and plop your funnels and containers down. Craft chain through fabrication for plastic funnels for more than barely surviving water. Craft chain construction, get a rock kiln and smoking rack down. Start preserving food in-between building log walls then log roofing to build a rock forge to craft a hoe. Congrats you can now farm forever. In your downtime burn more charcoal. Dig a lot of shallow pits for movement control and trap up the place with nailboards and snares. Spiked pit key spots, Shallow pit diamonds for spring reach kiting, Dogbane gets you a little textiles, Herbal tea will keep you from dying to flu and cold 24/7. Pray to the RNG for lighters for pilot lights and zombies dropping 00 shot for grenades for the rare npc/hulk. Eventually you'll beat a ghetto bicycle together. though I think some faglord made wood wheels fixed only so you can't steer. to give you a larger range to find civilization.

Then basically you just live life until you kill yourself. desu, innawoods is really shit when you don't have a library at the least for all the book locks. Not having an rv hurts a lot too but not having a lot of the recipes is just ew.
>>
>>161718269
Honestly I was just asking about how to survive the early game where you are spawned innawoods with usually no civilization around, I was thinking about settling down near civilization eventually, even though having a farm sounds fun.

Yes

PK mod is an example of "old game difficulty", where trial and error is a-OK.
Core game generally tries to avoid "oops you cut a corner and there's rape behind it, now ur ded".
>>
>>161722015
Well shit, I guess I better start without it to get a hang of the game first.

>>
>>161722269
Safe

They slow things down a bit, so if you are playing on a total toaster, you may want them off. I have 2ghz core duo and z-levels are still playable, though.

How do staff of conjuration builds even work, it seems like the blades do way too little damage to be of any use in the deeper floors.
>>
>>161725249
They do pitiful damage, but most enemies can only hit 1 at once. If your blade output is high enough and you spam them in the open, you'll get 7 free hits for a single blade destroyed. This lets me wreck Trolls with ease right now, but nagas would be a problem if I didn't have Firebolt and a squad of OP allies

Blades are fast and they don't expire so every interval you shit out another pack of blades and anything you have to fight. Even if it's something like a naga or a dragon it just gets chipped to death. So you bait them into an opening, zap at the wall behind them, zap them in the face and they die in a whirling cloud of fuck your shit You can throw darts at gas traps or thow mal pots then trap them in it with blades that are immune to the gas. On top of that you have your other floor drops to assist so your recharge time isn't a problem.

seriously, the Crawl mechanic with a random percent chance to resist is really shitty

in nethack or angband you know whether you're gonna get paralysed or not by whether you have FrAct, but even without a "paralysis immunity" property their earlygame paralysis is better than crawls

instead of shit that just rngs on you whenever you're in vision range, most early paralysers in *bands are melee-only (but 100% chance if they DO hit you) so you know in a given situation whether you will or will not get paralysed

getting frozen through 99% MR at the edge of los is a fucked up mechanic. it would be better if they just took MR out and gave paralysers mechanics similar to the crawl giant eyeball's "unresistable para but only if you stay in LOS for X turns".

usually when people say something is notaroguelike they are just memeing about a game they dont like
it's particularly effective if said game has tiles or is sold for real money dollars, which are both uncommon properties among traditional roguelikes

when i say cdda isn't a roguelike it's because it doesn't have remotely dungeon crawly gameplay. it doesn't play "like rogue", aside from having ascii graphics etc

basically people accept cdda as a roguelike but say e.g. shiren or poke man dungeon isn't because of surface-level stuff like graphics/ascii, whereas if you look inside at the core of the gameplay it's the other way around

CDDA cities work as dungeons just fine. Loot is concentrated in areas with guns, military or labs, with rest getting mostly the common stuff.

thinkin' about an enchantment buff, especially since the scrolls are so rare and so uselessly shitty

idear: ?enchant or minor enchant spell instantly enchants items up to the normal max of 2+level/5 like the town service, no fail chance
?*enchant* or the higher-level enchant spell brings it to the max from minor enchant, then adds +1,+1 to items up to the absolute enchantment max of +15

so for a level 50 char a single ?enchant would always take things to +12, or three ?*enchant* to get to +15

or maybe ?*enchant* always brings things to a minimum of +13 regardless of level. hmmm...

this change couldn't really be super OP because the guaranteed ?enchant is still no better than using the town enchanter service (just cheaper).
maybe would have to nerf it on arrows, but then again ?enchant is still really rare for how shitty and useless it is currently

The best definition of roguelike is the following:
>turn-based
>RPG
>controlling a single character exclusively

Anything that doesn't meet these criteria can be immediately dismissed as not roguelike. Anything that does meed them is arguably is a roguelike. Everything else (setting, story, objectives, UI, etc) are too subjective to be accurate. Berlin Definition is shit.

That needs a lot of clarification.

For example, Demon allows only one directly controlled character, but a whole team in total.
Many (most?) roguelikes have allies in some form and most of those allow some commands (which are a form of control).

Control one character per game turn? Chess would fulfill that, so not restrictive enough.
One character per game turn while all others move according to some AI?

>>
>>161748487
Unless this has been changed, you only directly control the player character don't you? You build your demons, but they only act autonomously.

I've also accounted for cases like PCB's Possessor or ToME's Alchemist, since you control corpses/the golem through your character.

Your chess argument is reaching. You control all your pieces at every point in time, you arguably control every piece at any given point in time, you just only get to move one per turn. It's also moot because it's obviously not an RPG.
>>
>>161748487
Direct control is different from commands.

It's the difference in real life between having a slave and being both the slave and the master.

The slave may have no original thoughts of its own, but it's not you.

WE'RE GONNA BUILD A WALL

Lets just stick with a basic definition of:

>randomly generated levels
and stop being autistic about it.
>>
>>161748886
Fallout 1 and 2 aren't turn-based. What are you talking about?
>>
In theory, is it worth tossing 10 or so levels into Necromancy if the only reason you'll use it is a demon whip of pain?

FTL is a roguelike
>>
>>161749484
>in theory
Nothing stopping you. But if your killdudes is good enough already, I'd say no. Unless you're going to cast necromancy spells as well, it's fairly pointless.
>>
>>161749258
>I've also accounted for cases like PCB's Possessor or ToME's Alchemist, since you control corpses/the golem through your character.
ToME alchemist could easily be argued to control two characters.
You only control one of them at once, but two in total.
>>
>>161749134
Didn't there use to be a roguelite general? I'm pretty sure it existed and then died because only like 20 people in the world like roguelites.
>>
>>161749424
If we're to have "holy trinity" of roguelike markers, I'd drop permadeath and try to cram in that "only one character at a time" thing in.
Otherwise something like final fantasy tactics with permadeath and random levels would still count.

Permadeath is important in the end, but everything that is close to being a roguelike already has permadeath anyway.
>>
>>161749983
Precisely as you describe it. lites aren't engaging enough to warrant a general of its own, so they latch onto us and constantly try to inject non-roguelikes. Shit's been going on ever since they realized /lite/ would die for days at a time.
>>
>>161749571
FTL and every other not-roguelike isn't one because it doesn't meet >>161748004.

It's precisely because of the retarded fucking redditors who came up with and use the Berlin Definition deciding that turn-based gameplay is as relevant to defining the genre as procedural generation, permadeath, and fucking consumables that you have idiots who think Rogue Legacy and it's ilk can be even remotely argued as a roguelike.

>>
>>161748004
"roguelike" is a genre of games, and game genres are generally based on gameplay, of course

i think the best way to determine whether something is a roguelike, instead of coming up with dumb checklists, is to just ask whether its gameplay is subjectively similar to other games in the roguelike genre

a "definition" like that is perfectly fine for casual usage as long as you ain't trying to write it into any contracts or laws
>>
>>161750107
Honestly, "one character at a time" is just too minor to be considered a pillar or a genre. I would say Berlin definition already explains it quite well.

Controlling the golem is defined within the game and the role-playing as your alchemist controlling the golem. You can't ever control both in the same turn, and I'm pretty sure the alchemist isn't even capable of moving while you're directly moving the golem (while the golem moves autonomously while you play the alchemist). Not to mention the golem itself and everything it can do is defined within the alchemist's own skill tree, it's ultimately just an extension of the player character (the one you create and name when starting the run).

If the golem were just a recruitable follower you could control while the player character acts automatically, or if you could control two different characters in a single turn, that would raise a red flag.

There are very few games that don't actually meet that criteria, since the variance is typically placed on how difficult it is to be forced to make a new start rather than whether you're forced to do so at all.

Elona for example has permadeath, it's just the conditions for permadeath in Elona are very difficult to meet. Meanwhile you get a lot of conflict because people tend to assume permadeath specifically means a game-over screen if you reach 0 HP, which isn't even necessarily the case in Nethack.

Should sleeping be assumed to drain hunger/thirst at a much lighter level than games attribute to it?

Whether it's accurate or not, it's annoying to wake up hungry/thirsty every time because you slept for 8 hours and your stomach is draining your fuel at the same rate as if you're walking and slashing things.

>but anon, there's evidence that we burn even more calories while sleeping than while awake
Yea, still just think there should be some leeway on the waking up process. Like suppressing the calorific intake of the duration of the sleep, then over the next couple hours of awake time, re-introduce the hunger cost more rapidly until you're not longer 'waking up/groggy'.

I'm not hungry when I first wake up. I tend to be hungry about an hour later. I assume because I'm just not really thinking about my stomach for the first bit of the day.

>Role playing can't really define genres.
I stressed that it's defined within the game itself that way as well. The role-playing is more generalized than I'd like to go, but what I want is a definitive mechanic to supplement the turn-based and single-character mechanic requirements and what I'm looking for is somewhere within the RPG package that every roguelike seems to have.

>He can blast niggas with staff.
If that's the case then that's a little questionable I admit. ToME does a lot of weird shit with the game mechanics in general.

>But it's still important to define why does that "not count" as breaking roguelike rules, yet final fantast tactics or chess count.
I'd ultimately say because it's implemented as a character ability, and because it doesn't enable two different things being moved in a single turn, this is what disqualifies FFT. Chess's problem isn't the turn mechanic, it's the lack of RPG mechanics. The fact that it's impossible to say whether you're playing as an individual piece, as all the pieces, or as the player controlling the pieces in chess at any given point in time is evidence of that.

It's also filled with things that the original owner had so little value for that they gave it away for free, whereas Disneyland is a capitalistic wonder filled with the projects of very capable and successful people who made lots of money building those projects.

It's very obvious which describes DDA more accurately.

Hallucinations in general are just boring now. I can understand wanting hallucinations to be hard to distinguish from real stuff, but losing the fun ui manipulation at the same time wasn't worth it, imo.

It had a real eternal darkness feel before, now it just seems like faceless debuff you have to wait out.
>>
>>161756649
I get it, but just adding stuff with no particular direction still leads to having a lot of various stuff to do. Not sure there even can be some kind of general direction for that kind of game and with that kind of a development model it has, I don't think it's necessary a bad thing personally.
To be fair it's not like whales had some grand direction in his mind either, it was basically just "zombie survival - the roguelike" that he got bored with eventually.

>hallucinations don't turn all color to red and fill the combat log with garbage
>you still know exactly how much damage a hit did
>you're not lied to by the ui anymore
Skitzo should honestly first and foremost make the ui lie to the player by intention. It should be a disconnect from what's actually happening and what the character thinks is happening.

>>161757491
>it gets annoying
Nothing is nearly as annoying as not having night vision and going into a house. And I mean skitzo reflecting your brain(ui) sending bad signals. It's supposed to be a radically different thing from just playing normally.

I'd be fine with skitzo giving you fake npcs you can actually talk to and behave as all NPCs do, but have no actual impact on their surroundings. Putting clothes on them or trading just results in a pile of garbage, or clothes being carried by you but hidden from your ui because you 'thought' you equipped them on a follower.

I'm just saying hallucinations are uninteresting and uninspired compared to before.

That's not actually true though. Most of the successful freeware roguelikes ultimately ended up being used for profit and the ones that aren't (DCSS) are often notorious for shitty design choices.

In general, there's much more to gain from designing a personal game project, free or not, than there is to fix someone else's game. Correcting bugs and putting dildos in someone else's ASCII zombie simulator isn't something that makes for an attractive portfolio.

You're shitting me. "Roguelites" are such a broad and more casual genre, that I'd say at least two orders of magnitude more people have played roguelites than roguelikes. I think the main issue with /lite/'s staying power is the lack of replayability in the games, combined with the lack of autists in the lite audience that can perpetually put the thread on life support like we have here.
>>
>>161757742
>hallucinations are uninteresting and uninspired
That's true. I don't think they were particularly interesting before, but they definitely aren't that now.
Fake NPCs sound cool. I'd also like to see fake monsters that hover around and whisper things to you instead of just attacking. Maybe even fake terrain and landmarks.
>>
>>161751252
>You can't ever control both in the same turn, and I'm pretty sure the alchemist isn't even capable of moving while you're directly moving the golem (while the golem moves autonomously while you play the alchemist).
You literally just described the "control all your pieces at every point in time but just move one at a time" reasoning from >>161749258. As for the golem autonomously moving during PC control vs. PC being paralyzed during golem control, that counts as modality my man. Making Alchemist not a roguelike.

>>161754375
>Chess's problem isn't the turn mechanic, it's the lack of RPG mechanics. The fact that it's impossible to say whether you're playing as an individual piece, as all the pieces, or as the player controlling the pieces in chess at any given point in time is evidence of that.
You're playing as the King because if the King dies you die. Even though you can control other pieces, their lives only matter in the context of protecting your King (i.e. you) and capturing the MacGuffin (enemy king). Even the RPG mechanic is there too since pawns can be promoted to higher ranks. You can even define the game of chess as role-playing as the King who gives orders to all his subjects. Which is literally what it's defined as lore-wise.

Put points in dodging and melee at chargen.
Craft yourself a spear from the furniture in your shelter.
If you see something you don't think you can handle, run away. " toggles running.
If you misjudge whether you can handle something, make a new character and try to remember what killed you last time.

Only going out at night is a legitimate strategy, by the way. The zombies can smell you, but they're a lot less efficient following scent trails than they are moving towards something they can actually see.
>>
>>161774819
First order of business is to find/craft a backpack of some kind.

Then find food.

Then find a library.

Get to a safe place, and read until you can't read anymore. Rest. Find more food, and read again until you can't read anymore. Do this until you know kung fu and see the inside of the matrix.

Or find a gun store and chance getting in and out and running like hell until whatever horde the alarms call stops chasing you.

>>161736954
Read the manual. Basically, all stats matter as well as any degree of increase/loss, the weapons are very well balanced creating a spectrum of niche's all of which are valid choices, Like rogue, you spend a lot of the game in serious risk of getting dunked on, there's a ton of viable playstyles, floor drops can have a great impact on how you approach the game, you're running off of turncount instead of cleared territory so you're not penalized for dodging hard stuff and rewarded far more for diving as fast as you pass another gear check to get greater rewards at greater risk. The light morale system is amazing with all the stuff you can do with it. You have a tight inventory so you have to make significant choices about what consumables and swaps you want to carry which can lead to having to bail on specific encounters while excelling at others depending on what you pack when. Consumables and staves are very powerful instead of just being a win-more condition.

>>161739490
That's just a consequence of the early game being intentionally simple. Around 400'ish you start getting a lot of vaults showing up and you're only getting more the deeper you go. You'll also start getting more OOD stuff from an even deeper range. It's always a sad day when you open up a vault hoping to score some quick miruvor and it has the cat uniques 200' early.

Once you have the skill to shoot accurately and have better firearms and ammo you'll get saved countless times by drawing an SMG out of your survivor harness to burst fire out of a group you got brute/hulk slammed into. Or drawing an assault rifle and mopping up a horde after you blow 2 radio activated dynamite to cripple those 13 hulks, 3 shocker brutes, 8 brutes, 4 masters, 6 necromancers.
>>
>>161791358
>Can they be reversed by mutation?
Yes, IF there are mutations that are incompatible with it. eg if you took "sleepy" and then chugged enough alpha mutagen you would eventually lose sleepy and progress towards Very Little sleep
but purifier returns you to your starting traits, so if you downed enough purifier you would get back to Sleepy again instead of having no mutations

>Will they weight you toward certain trees by default?
yes. all muts you have in a tree weight you further towards that tree, including ones from starting traits

Brokenly strong if you build well.

Raise your speech skill and befriend as many non-gun or flamer npc. Ask them to teach you to check if they have a form then let them bump into zombies until they die or just strip them and take all their shit. If you're living in a static base build a bulletin board to draw more after you've stored anything you care about underground and have fire extinguishers.
Loot dojo's/Lab barracks for unarmed manuals
Loot mansions/lab barracks for weapons art manuals
Raise unarmed combat to 3 to auto-learn brawling

Grocery stores/hardware stores/clothing shops have a chance to have shopping carts/wheelbarrows
Office towers have swivel chairs.
I forget the name of it but it had luggage carriers.

You can also craft 2 wood frames at fabrication 1, hit * and select start vehicle construction. Pick an empty tile. 'e'xamine it. 'i'nstall a part and if you have 20 nails you can nail your second wood frame in for a 150 vol wood box. 'g'rab it and drag the noisy shit around town. Once you have duct tape, look for a wrecked or damaged vehicle that has an intact steel frame part like a door over a broken frame. Smash it with a 2x4's hoping to break the frame before you break the door. If you succeed it'll tear off the car and you'll have that door that reverted to its base steel frame part. Then go tape that into a wood frame for a 275 vol box. Later in the game you'll be salvaging cargo spaces and refitting your 1 tile shopping carts and whatever car you got working. Later still you'll likely move up to an expanded van or RV to mobile base around with.

If you train up your gun and weapon skills you'll unlock holsters, harnesses and scabbards as you go. You can activate them to shove guns and weapons into them. Under the new container system, when your max volume falls under your current volume items tumble out of your inventroy at 0 cost to you. So after you clear a block around whatever you want to loot you can go in with your shopping cart and wear 1-2 (survivor) duffel bags. If anything happens it'll only take you 3 turns per bag to return your enc back to fighting levels and your guns and weapons are secured to your body so you can't drop them. Kill the dudes then put your shit back on and grab the loot again. If they're too close just shoot with a gun or lob a grenade or three to get time to get into cover and bear down for the horde.

CBM installation (you're going elated and drugging up anyway), int breakpoint on books (Doesn't matter because you have unlimited time), Amigara paralysis (you're going elated and drugging up anyway), hack checks (skill books are plenty) off the top of my head. Getting a longer lasting morale boost that you use to power level combat skills is more beneficial than just that 1 int.

>>
>>161806402
The way that Brogue is designed means that it's almost entirely spoiler free, so really the only way to git gud is to keep on playing it again and again. Having said that, there are easy builds in the game. If you get a seed with a 3/3 lightning staff and a ring of wisdom you can win fairly easily as long as you're careful.

You can just go for a mastery win and put most of your enchantment in a 3/3 lightning staff and save chargeswith the occasional melee or other stave if floor drops are good.

More fiddling with automapping ego.
Kinda getting idea of implementing a race that could use this sort of ability. But not sure how to distinguish it from already existing/races classes.
>>
>>161806402
>Random RNG bullshit
Of what kind? Any enemies giving you trouble?

My first tip is get a good weapon when your strength is high enough. The dagger does PITIFUL damage, even enchanted. Even a -3 sword (from curses, or from strength penalties) is better, from my experience, as long as it doesn't bear a bad runic.
Seriously, some enemies are basically beef gates and you'll die if you can't deal enough pain (or take enough) before they fuck you up.
Also, get good armor if you can, but never armor above your strength.

Don't waste your darts on caustic bloats if you can pop them in melee and retreat behind a door. You'll only take little damage. Keep darts for trap triggering, pit bloats and goblin conjurers, and to throw at vampire bats when they're not attacking you if the situation is desperate enough.

If you meet something horrible that can't run faster than you, kill you at range or fly: run up the stairs and fall down the closest pit/chasm. Enemies won't follow you.
>>
>>161807212
Giving them some intrinsic detection spells could be cool.
Would be a nice race to take for a lot of classes if they had relatively flat stats and skills.
Maybe in exchange for some flat vulnerabilities.

"Hard" and "spoiler-free" are different things.
For a game to be spoiler-free, you'd need to be able to look up all the monsters that will spawn, all their stats, all your stats, drop rates etc.

Or play well without getting a hang of the above (not explicit learning, also including "feeling" what will you need next).

Alright, implemented. Basically you have no-tele, but have own means of blinking/ddooring around ( automap range ).
You don't get blasted by looking at eldritch things, plus if things try to cast amnesia/brain smash/mind blast you, you will sort of reflect that.
They have little hp ( almost as little as yeeks ), plus take increasing penalty to AC ( 5+lv ).
Oh, any they have kinda weird inventory slots.
>>
>>161811447
It's okay, anon. You'll find your way one day.
>>
>>161811774
Neat. Though lacking a proper teleport, do they have any real escape options. Low health + no proper teleport sounds like a combination for breath-death.
>>
>>161812025
The dimension door is one, plus they get telepathy late-game.

Well, good points.
I probably swap out telepathy for sort of auto-monster detection that goes somewhat further automapping.

Alright, riddle me this /rlg/: There are 12 boulders on the tile to the south of me, and 11 holes that need to be filled. Standard sokoban rules apply, i.e. boulders cannot be pushed diagonally and you cannot move diagonally between boulders and/or walls. And now I dare you to present the solution.

You know, Slex is fucking shit, but Slexoban is beautiful.
I'll have to try it sometime.

Anyway:
The solution is moving the rock to the east, then pushing it north and then again to the east until you hit the | before the wall. Do this five times, aligning the stones.
Now push the first stone you put near the | upwards two times and west once.
Now, you still have six boulders to put away. It's pretty simple: push the sixth boulder east, up, up and then east 3 times.
Now, things get tricky:

>>
>>161829267
Do the same thing you did with the sixth boulder, but push the seventh east only once. You've still got 4 boulders to go.
Push the ninth boulder from the pile east, upwards twice.
The last three are the trickiest ones.

>>161829420
Oh hey you're doing EE too?
There's no way you can "fail" a university course silly, you just take longer unless you've been trying for five years to pass an exam
First year myself
I'm studying like 70 hours a week.
>>
>>161829532
Woops, I meant eight. Eight boulder east and upwards twice.

Anyway:
There's a limited number of moves you can do now and they're all very ugly.

You're gonna push the ninth boulder west twice. This is your junk boulder since you only need to fill 11 holes.
Then you're gonna push the tenth to the east twice. Don't worry, you'll get it back even though it doesn't seem like it.
11th boulder goes east once
and the 12th, final boulder goes down in the first hole.

You should be able to solve this right now, call me if you've got any problems.

It's a shitty little undead wraith faggot thing that takes the darkness mechanic the game introduces with night thorns and turns it up to 11.
They're breeders that produce an unnatural darkness and their damage bypasses your armor. You need sufficient light level to reveal them or suffer accuracy and evasion penalties. Once you know it's them you can throw in some bane weapons for additional light, drop some at your feet, use a staff of light, sing trees, or just plink into the room with arrows killing them off. If you catch them early you can maybe get a handle on it but remember your acc and evasion are halved and you're risking taking a lot of damage. Be careful about moving into a room of them cause you can and will get OTKO'd by that 2d6 armor-bypassing damage. They can't open doors so you can just avoid them until an orc lets them out half the time. If they were already awake and had a chance to breed up the room just leave. Be aware that later on there's a slow moving unnatural darkness that will pursue you that corrodes your shit. There's fast moving shadow spiders/bats, and there's rakuo shit that makes darkness too.

>what should my Clockwork Automaton Drunk wish for?

>>

>SLEX into the FoTM
A fitting fate for the shitposting general /rlg/ has become lately.
SLEX is a real roguelike after all.
>>
Is it safe to start a fire in a basement without burning the house to the ground/smoking yourself out?
>>
I've only ever played Dwarf Fortress Adventure mode before

is there a roguelike that is more or less just a straight-up upgrade of it?
>>
>>161839171
cataclysm: dda could be considered a scifi/zombie downgrade of it
>>
>>161838536
it would be a more amusing FOTM than poopcrapboner, please post more terrible screenshots

CDDA is essentially DF adventure mode, except better in almost every way.
No wrestling, though.

there's an enemy with Vorpal Blade on level 2

>Implying searching isn't one of the most annoying, half-baked concept in all roguelikes ever
It's only implemented because Rogue/<insert game name here> did it.
Mashing S through a floor to find the stairs and getting hit with a dangerous or even lethal effect because you didn't retrace your steps perfectly may be an accepted mechanic. But it's frustrating and inherently flawed.

I do have some plans for handling search differently, but reworking that part of Brogue sounds tedious. Maybe it'll show up in one of my projects in the future.
>>
welp my slexman is already dead

I got a wish for GDSM on level 1 and a vorpal blade on level 2, and then I learned that the drunk's "create booze" technique can create cursed booze that will cause you to pass unconscious
>>
>>161840186
i assume you're not actually the brogue dev. are there any notable forks of brogue?
>>
>>161820784
Armo(u)red Commander? Nah it's kinda boring and modal as fuck so not a roguelike. I dropped it after the first mission or two

I believe UnBrogue adds more shit.

>downgrade

Yeah, that's the word
it's been a long time since Cataclysm has been good

on default settings it's nigh-unplayable and very frustrating nowadays
>>
>>161841391
Lolno

Unless you play with PK mod or some shit like that, it's totally fine with default.
>>
>>161840426
Oops, just noticed the awkward phrasing. Yeah, I'm just a rando, I was simply considering making a fork.

There's only one, AFAIK, and it was a one-time project by the UnAngband dev. It's based on 1.6.4 and has a lot of new, but pretty silly content.

>Armor can have prefixes that have some moderate impact on defense, strength requirement, etc.
>Light weapons get better stealth attacks with enchants
>Reworked spears/pikes, maces/hammers
>Wands and Staves can now belong to either category, decided at random each game. Wands in staff forms recharge but have lesser effects, staffs in wand forms have limited charges and much greater effects.
>New wands and staffs that summon discordant monsters
>Lighting will reflect off walls until it hits 2 targets
>New item types like cloaks and shields, tomes and elixirs (buffed potions/scrolls), talismans...
>Ogre, Salamander, Naga rework

Some features even made their way into the main game, like armor impacting stealth, slaying/immunity working on categories of monsters, etc.

I could never figure out what you're supposed to do in DF adventure mode.I'd just kill a village of elves and become a god in the process.
>>
>>161841506
alright, have fun
>getting fucking destroyed if you make even the slighest of noises
>getting any supplies at all due to the above
>finding a functioning car with more than 5 seconds of fuel
>successfully installing any kind of CBM
>clearing out a town or even a large building
>defeating a mi-go
>>
>>161841715
well, you're supposed to recruit comrades and go on quests until you become a god

I usually just turn into a vampire or necromancer and go on killing sprees instead

but yeah there's legitimately not much to do
>>
>>161841829
Hordes aren't the default.
You need to really make a lot of noise to attract non-hordes.

>>finding a functioning car with more than 5 seconds of fuel
You pretty much always had to siphon fuel. Nowadays it's actually easier to find a working car.

>>successfully installing any kind of CBM
>don't stack int
>wonder why you can't install things

>>defeating a mi-go
Just evoke you feet nigga, just get some distance
>>
roguelike featuring scp when?

>successfully installing any kind of CBM
You gotta gorge on junk food and do enough cocaine until you're smart enough to, like, jiggle the atoms into place or something.
>>
>>161842514
when you program it
>>
>>161842514
SCP: Containment Breach as a roguelike could be fun
>>
>>161841829
>Craft decent weapons, armor, and train combat skills with morale books and unpulped zombies to fuel your focus
>Mash dat MF sprint reach attack through a shrub/window combo
>Unlimited satiation from foraging and crafting funnels
>Which is why you just siphon fuel over into one you get running
>You have a lot of CBM's to find and you'll get the level 8 skill books in the meantime. Then read up, eat up, drug up and install them
>See 1 and raise it explosives, nailboards, and shallow pit kiting
>Easily doable day 1 via shrubs and only easily once you get throwing, a lighter to set the bush on fire, or any other kind of ranged attack
>>
>>161843293
>>
>>161843715
It's the recommended classes for the race, that are highlighted.
>>
>>161843135
tl;dr I have to metagame like absolute shit and play for 8 hours to get anywhere
>>
>>161844114
Hate to tell you this but not playing like a downy is the first step to not sucking. No football team ever one by snapping the ball then just walking around aimlessly for an hour.
