In FtD, how do I set cannons so that they automatically engage in battle when a shap gets too close?
They just get pulled when I move too far away and enemy ships just pass in front of them with no problems, even though their AI is on.

This is one thing that kinda pisses me off about the main campaign. The WF used to be rammy spinny smashy guys who would chew on your ships at 40m/s, but now half their ships just spew sabot rounds at .8c until your AI cores are all demolished. It's a lot less fun this way.
>>
>>161685392

FTD really needs a "Gameplay" pass on all the campaign ships.

As of right now, the designers simply update their ships to maximum effectiveness inside the envelope of their faction, This isn't bad for making tough bosses and challenging rivals, but there needs to be a skill curve.

The simplest example is the Vanguard: The Vanguard was literally removed from the game in favor of the retrofit. Yes, the retrofit is a better ship, but that isn't the point...

>I wish wheels were worth a damn in sponges

I can actually explain why this isn't and probably wont ever be a thing that works well in spongoes, given our own internal testing in REM.

Because of the way they're managing 'ship' and 'grids', along with their use of Havok, centre of mass and acceleration are incredibly inconsistent. Especially over varied terrain. To create a system that works as smoothly as, say, ACF in gmod or Robocuck's older wheel system, you need to differentiate how wheels work from everything else.

What they have is a semi-circular block with some bounciness applied to the material. The friction slider only slightly alters this material, way below what is required. Any more would cause near instant clang.

Nope, external force 'spin' (rotation) applied by a script. Its as much garbage as you think it is. Only good part about the whole assembly is the suspension, and only just barely.

Allowing lego parts, or allowing scaling of parts raises all sorts of balance questions, given that REM is a multiplayer combat game.

Especially if the lego method allows players to unlock new modules to attach or build their parts with, given they'd be playing against players without, potentially. This would mean every benefit would have some equivalent detractor in performance, somehow, provided its not just a straight upgrade that increases the cost of the module.

So far as modular wheels, you could go for the realistic approach and let players choose their own tire width, tire diameter, and wheel diameter. The larger the wheel the heavier it is, with trade-offs in aiming stability, speed, and target profile. Stuff like run-flats or airless tires could shit on accuracy but be slightly more durable

well, despite having a sphere as a colision model for the wheel in spengos, somehow it simulates that moment when the rim eats the dirt and stop having lateral friction and start to force the whole thing to roll, with airless you have this issue to, unless you can the lateral friction separated from the linear one.
>>
>>161706891
I don't really see what the big deal is. Calculating the ideal ratio isn't that hard, and while it's going to take a while for people to figure out optimal and near-optimal design with the new boilers, "good enough" should still be pretty easy.

>>161706814
Its less of a true swerve drive and more of a diagonal suspension mount with minor turning ability. Actual swerve drives would be even more fragile, but would allow almost FPS levels of lateral control. I look forward to scout vehicles that can circle strafe around everything. fortunately its REMdev that makes the models, and given he's a for realsies engineer that removes my own retardation.

>>161706856
This sounds most likely, and easiest given its a simple matter of scaling the model and rigid body. Add some fuckery with multipliers based on the size and composition of the wheel and all I have to do is find some non-retarded values to punch in.

Asides from that, it will also keep the center in the middle of the arm block, and not on a side, if the top mount goes back to the other side, leaving the wheel in the actual center, would be the same, but if not, you could play with another axis like the front fork of a bike.
If they are under the same rules as the rest of the building materials.

You can find gameplay workarrounds with this.
Im not saying making the think collect feathers on the rooftops, but maybe energy balls or something that the enemy releases after being hit.

Thats why i sugested the wheels idea of the new speed racer movie, you can say shit to real wheels physics and with those sphericals you can roll on any surface glued to the ground, expanding the flatness of any map, more with an enclosed map with a roof roll over or jump from it.

We were tossing the idea of a "Armored Recovery Vehicle" around, with basically the same capability as the Engineer from Supreme Commander, except instead of just holding down a button to repair or build something, you'd actually build with the same tools you had in the builder.

I actually couldn't breath because of how hard I was laughing because I was thinking about using this ability offensively, ripping shit off of someone else's build and strapping it to yourself. Or perhaps finding an incapacitated enemy vehicle and ripping it apart as they lie there, screaming at you in the chat

Something like fuel and ammo pickups might be a thing, if they required you to stop and expose said modules somehow.

>>161709145

About those wheels, other models have more of them in a double arrange, so they work also on rough surfaces.

There's actually a game like that, called Reassembly if I'm not mistaken, albeit that's a 2d top down space shooter with modules you can grab and slap on.

Does it have active suspension? Cause all wheels powered and steered is where military vehicles are currently headed. Some people are even saying that every wheel in a future military combat vehicle might be powered, steered, have active suspension, torque sensing, force sensing, current sensing, humidity sensing. Have a camera and lidar looking ahead of the wheel to see what it's going to hit and another camera and lidar looking back to measure how much the ground deflected, along with a ground penetrating radar so the wheel can see what's under it.

Now the thing you really ought to do is make the wheel offset like a caster wheel and capable of 360 degree rotation. Turns out that when you work out the kinematics it does better than if you rotate the wheel around in the center.

How much better are we talking about? Well supposedly if you built a vehicle like this, you could make sharp corner turns without stopping.

Oh yeah, and if you ever loose power to a wheel like this, it can just spin around freely not impeding the other wheels.

Here have some details:

Good shit, anon, I'll read through this. For the higher tech tiers, I think such advanced wheels should be available, though I have no idea how useful a LIDAR would be on a damn wheel in a video game. Maybe just SAY they have that shit and just give them ridiculous properties.

Active suspension is something we're going to have, given its not all that hard to code in. Balancing that shit is again, more difficult than implementing it.

Well guys, I didn't know where else to post, and this thread seemed most relevant.

So, I am getting in to making NES reproduction carts. Usually this is done with a donor cartridge and means "destroying" a piece of gaming history.

There are few places that offer new PCBs, but they don't offer ETROM boards, which is required to make Zelda: The Legend of Link run on actual NES hardware.

Do you guys happen to know of any places that sell quality NES repro PCBs?

The few places I've looked have boards that will make plenty of games. But the problem with them is that they are not made with hard gold on the PCB and continual use in and out of the NES 72 pin connector will wear down the contacts over time.

Any help or suggestions is appreciated. Cheers.

the maps we're making are designed for AG-stabilized sled racers so there's no real benefit to using hovers, but i might make a hover racing map eventually

on the topic of fast racing, here's mappo, a track for 900kph sled/hover racers
https://a.pomf.cat/pepmbf.mccz

Well you can make pseudo-hovers with invisible sleds. Guess the benefit of actual hovering is all-terrain capability.
If I recall correctly, you can add local gravity to boxes. I know not how but I do know it's possible and it works with hovers. Ballistic-esque tube racetracks anyone?

One last thing. About steering: is it okay to use tracker/hover/rudder/whatever?
There aren't any strict rules regarding what can and can't be brought to the track, right? R-right?

no rules really, so long as it doesn't induce clang and frame loss or something. tracker steering might feel a little cheaty if you can make it work just right, but afaik there's no easy way to get quick cornering with tracker steering. maybe if you use trackers to guide frontal steering wings?

my racers use all sorts of different tricks to stay on the track, for example the engine pods aren't separate grids just for show, they actually play a part in making sure it turns straight even while airborne even though i'm not quite sure just how it works.

Hello!

This update includes a lot of new bricks, features and bug fixes!
Some of the changes:
- Added wings, propellers and thrusters
- New machine gun
- Large gun now shoots explosive rounds
- New explosion particle and sound effects
- Fixed an occasional crash with colliding bricks
- New brick materials (colors) and proper material vizualization in the editor

There was a female team?

Anyways, in more detail:

>Paper:
-Some amount of sliding while ship accelerated. When velocity was constant, people were able to move normally, and all blocks functioned. Nobody glitched through anything, and we performed the hardest turns and rolls possible with our ship while people were onboard.

Bugs manifested:
>A client's radio position would desync from their character while they stood on an accelerating ship, and would remain desynced. This never went further than a meter, though.
>When I deleted a blueprint, someone standing on it was teleported far away. Exact distance or position was not recorded.
>When someone else climbed into a lemon under my ownership, the ship's HUD pulled up on my screen, though I could move my engineer normally and the client was in control of the ship.
>When colliding ship with moon, the collision didn't feel very hard. This may have been operator error.

Scissors:
>While in motion, the lights on my ship turned off.
>Client movement was jerky on their end.
>Doors would stop opening halfway through and become broken.
>Clients couldn't use buttons. Labels on buttons would vanish while ship was in motion.
>Collisions worked fine, though.

Rock:
>Client movement was a little bit jerky, objects would be stuck spinning.
>Few outstanding bugs, but was somewhat laggy.
>Game crashed when I rammed my station onto a planet.

16 290mm APS, they've got a pretty flat trajectory, and not much recoil. I haven't tested them out against much but they tore through the premade Bismarck like paper, it only took one salvo to dig through the hull and detonate ammunition.

She's not done yet, I've still got to add lower caliber guns, fine detail, and torpedoes/rockets (may do only one, may do both). She makes about 17 m/s or 33 Knots at top speed, I've had problems with getting good speed out of any of my ships before though so I might just be grossly wasting the 150,000+ horsepower I get from her eight steam engines. I'll post more in a bit.

They're all small steam engines, I've spent a good bit of time playing around with them and they particular ones I'm using just seem to be the most space efficient. Large steam engines can push out a helluvalot more power in fewer units, but they're taller and fatter.

290mm even.
ROF is 23.55 seconds.
Shell is loaded into a 3 meter rack.

I'd guess they're pretty lackluster compared to a gun built with a bellowdecks segment, but in a close range fight with the Bismarck they chewed it to pieces in short order.

Yes, but they're cheap and light and obviously I don't have to have a cavity bellowdecks for them. There is room (in a pinch) if I wanted to build more elaborate guns, and I probably will, but I started building this yesterday and I really wanted to get it mostly complete and give it a test run today.

Man, I wanna build big guns, but I've gotta get little guns finished first.

I made kinda a variety pack of 2 axis high-angle guns for my probable destroyer project (as soon as I can be assed to get the size right to use it in campaign).

From right to left, we have the "Cudgel" 80mm Airburst Fragmentation AA gun, the "Pike" 170mm High Angle Gun (with Inertial HE rounds), the "Dart" 36mm Machine Gun (with AP-Tracer belts) and the "Mace" 120mm Quad Flak Gun.

I hope to shove these on all kinds of boats in the future; I realized every time I tried to build a new ship I'd end up trying to reinvent the wheel and have a bunch of really crappy weapons or things that didn't fit right. I'll be more than happy to make custom jobby main cannons, but for the little secondary guns, it's nice to have things you can just slot in.

I'm at the end of a cycle now unfortunately. Rod logic and computery stuff held my interest for longer than normal but I'm burnt out and bored with it, which is why I was asking about ideas for a-life bots in the other thread

Is it possible to designe a cheap compact low caliber gun that fire caseless ammo at high rof (since it's based off casings) and still does a fair amount of damage? How many batteries and how much power would such a gun require? I'm shit at designing guns, that's why i'm asking.

>>161808829
It's hard to say since I haven't done a railgun under 225mm/4m shooting every 5 seconds at 20% charge.

Obviously you can increase the ROF with less speed and even with no cooling units you can use a small amount of powder for a boost without cooldown problems.

This is what I'm using atm but for rapid fire you'd probably want more chargers than what I used in the previous picture and more power than what I'm using since I was aiming for max efficiency.

The damage is really based on luck, sometimes you'll one-shot kill a godly OW ship or it could take 5 minute to kill.

ACs are definitely better in almost every way under 2km range or so

So the Dart is using belt fed autoloaders? How the fug do you get those working? I've tried to build proper rapid firing AA guns in the past but belt feeders didn't seem to work. Do you have to put them together differently from normal autoloader setups?

For starters, belt-fed loaders have only one(!) side that accepts "clips"
In order to actually begin loading ammo into the cannon, their attached "clips" have to be completely reloaded.

One thing to note about belt-fed loaders is that you can set the delay to start reloading the clips while they still have ammo in them. I think the default is one minute of inactivity.
You can lower the delay, and that can help keep the clips supplied during a battle by letting them refill after they've gone without shooting for a few seconds

The faster it runs the more heat it generates, and FI is a hell of a lot better across a sink than NA.

im upset about never getting to experience any of the meme travel in action

alcubimeme drive is simply unfeasible to construct with anything other than pen and paper

Anything FTL is pretty much a meme. This is because FTL anything is equivalent to time travel.
>>
>>161927957
9mm isn't WIDE enough, not that it's not powerful enough. How would it expand enough, yet leave a hole that large without fragmenting?
>practically tinfoil
Paper targets shot with 9mm don't have holes that big, and at that speed, paper is comparable to tinfoil.
>>
bamp
>>
>>161940126
EM drive isn't FTL in any sense, and those others don't cross space faster than light, either. Basically, an Alcubierre drive moves space itself, while a wormhole is, essentially, just a shortcut.

Beating light to somewhere isn't the same as going faster than light.

You can obtain a lot still. Easily reaching overflow of extra parts.
The empty jars only dispense so fast, and the filling machine eats up leaves the moment they are needed.

Yeah, I noticed when I actually started solving it. I cut 3/4 of the foliage away and it still overflowed. From there it was simple as I realized that overflow doesn't matter.
