I think it depends on the league you'll be playing, as well as how early you manage to get in.

Quality gems are worth more on hardcore. Softcore gets flooded with them because gems aren't lost on death and the penalty of death within the labyrinth is only a 3-4c loss.

That's not realistic math... you don't fucking farm 50 t1s, most people can stabilize at ~t10 without trading, so it 10k map tiers isn't nearly as bad as it sounds like, especially if you run a t10 in under 5 minutes (120+ map tiers per hour)

there's only 3 things that double dip, ignite, poison and bleeding

for fire for example: the base fire damage and elemental damage nodes scale your fire damage.
The ignite from the fire damage is based on your fire skill damage, so they were already being increased that way.
but then due to god knows why, those nodes also increase the ignite a second time
having effectively double the effect for it, or double-dipping

that's it. You can get some really broken damage by abusing this. A few leagues ago the rage was Elemental proliferation ignite EVERYWHERE. to the point where they had to kill Ele prolif gem by limiting its radius. to work the double dipping is something more taxing it seems.

More ele damage definitely doesn't double dip. No clue what you guys are talking about for double dipping on conversion. Conversion has never multiplied anything from my understanding.

Pic has Arctic Breath + Ele focus (44% more ele damage). Equipping pyre does nothing extra. Vortex double/triple dips on more spell damage though, but that's DoT double dipping not conversion dipping.

Nope, cold snap is awful since you need crit/power charge generation and I was built around spell damage/ele damage (both double dip onto ignite with Vortex). About tier 2 clear speed (you clear an entire screen in 1 cast, but moving around with a wand/lightning warp/flame dash sucks), amazing boss killer except for ignite immune guardians (fuck GGG). It's just really nice with Hrimburn since you proc EE for ignite and your curses triple dip the cold/ignite damage so everything melts. Probably won't play again.

yeah no way is scorching ray fun, the sound and just standing there is like the polar opposite of totems and that's not good because you're pretty much flame totem

There are builds that rely on ES regen anon.
Builds that cannot leech, thus where ES regen becomes pretty important: totemers, trappers, DoTers. Even the odd EB ZO build which is really niche and subpar is getting blown out by that map mod.

Yes, with physical damage, there are uniques that grant phys to fire conversion
Cold gets Cold2Fire which is 50% conversion so no damage loss occurs there.

Generally speaking, the biggest hurdle is not so much how to figure out how to not lose (too much) potential damage in the process but rather if you consider the loss of EE acceptable.

For example, a fire Elementalist uses OoS + EE for 25+50 fire penetration and EO proccing. Using AoF not only loses her the 50 fire pen from EE but also gives enemies 25 fire res.

There's no double dipping with damage conversion. Each damage increase can only occurs once during the entire conversion process.

AoF is only beneficial in niche cases where you want all your damage to be fire so you can maximize fire penetration effectiveness. BUT you lose EE so that's something to keep in mind.

The more you lower your chance to upgrade map drops tier, the more you rely on trading. The ideal atlas would consist of nothing but linear yellows shaped into reds and the t14s+ but that's not going to work if you don't have infinite currency. Moreover, a lot of reds with bad layouts have good monster density, which makes the exp/hour differential pretty slim all things considered. Sure you can feel pretty good about running nothing but shaped Strands and Coves, but clearing maps very fast has also its price.

Conversion "remembers" the damage source types. If you convert a cold spell to fire, it "remembers" being cold and benefits from cold increases. So with Snowforged, you'd benefit from 25% increased fire damage (because it's now fire damage) and also from 25% increases cold damage (because it was originally cold damage and conversion "remembers" that).

You gain more ES for less points spent compared to life, which means you put more points into damage/utility, and the supposedly major downside of ES having no sustain is solved by grabbing vaal pact + ghost reaver, which results in massively overpowered instant leech. Pair it with a fast hitting spell, like bladevortex or icestorm, and you are immortal as long as you just keep hitting things.

No, the downside of CI is the one-dimensional way of building defenses. You can't really squeeze block, armour or evasion, except from flasks, and Acro is obviously not possible. All your mitigation/avoidance comes from flasks, which makes Pathfinder CI ironically game breaking but the increased reliance on VP + sponge playstyle means that if for some reason you cannot leech or not enough, you tend to get wrecked much much much faster than a life build.

Like, it's funny how some CI builds can struggle against phase 2 Izaro when he's immune to leech but can still target you.

What sort of builds are good for new players that don't require too much gear? I think mine ended up being too gear dependent despite me having none.

So,i'm thinking of trying a BF Miner Saboteur but i've never played something of this sort.Which are the usual defenses to go for?CI or Life?

Spellcasters do well SSF early in the league because their damage comes from gem level mainly, which means you can outfarm dps deficiencies, something you cannot do with attack-based builds. If your spellcaster lacks damage, farm dried lake for another 3 levels and you're generally good to go. If your melee lacks damage, you need a better weapon, which means trading or relying on blind luck, since there's no real way to craft decent weapons, the rustic sash recipe only really works up until the end of normal.

Non-crit spellcasters are probably the easiest spec to level with, something like Firestorm into Flameblast works well with pretty much any Templar/Witch/Shadow build.

The difference isn't really that significative since your primary defense is manual dodging, possibly a Blasphemy Enfeeble. CI works well late game since you're in the right position to pick up efficient nodes but life works just fine for the first 90 levels too.
