I only made this because you're doing your turn edition.

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Makes a certain amount of sense. Supply lines weren't really a thing until comparatively recently. Armies would generally live off the land. And note: forts DO boost supply in their surroundings. Everywhere else, the infrastructure just doesn't exist.
>>
>>161266454
It's actually pretty accurate to medieval warfare, supply chains were difficult to co-ordinate back then, so you'd generally just acquire food from the surrounding area, whether by foraging, or by stealing/buying from locals.

>Fortress-based supply depends on the province's proximity to a fortress. If the province in question is within four provinces of a fort, fortress-based supply is added to the population-based supply calculated above. This depends on the fortress' Admin rating (see section on fortresses below) and uses the formula (Administration * 4) / (Distance + 1). Only the highest fortress-based supply is used if there is more than one nearby fortress.

Not sure if you're still around, but some advice if you are.
>I'm not sure how important formations are/what a good formation is except the one bit about elephants in the guide
Overall formation of your army depends what you're planning to do with it and what you expect your enemy to have. Rushing down the enemy with elite troops is a lot different from sitting back and letting your mages nuke the enemy.

For squad formations,
Use box if you don't want any other formation, or if you want to buff troops efficiently.
Use line defensively and to reduce damage from enemy arrows/evocations. It makes your units move much slower, don't use it if your troops need to get in melee quick.
Use skirmish if you want to reduce damage from enemy ranged attacks but don't want your units to move slowly.

Double and Sparse Line have situational uses, don't worry about those for now.

>buildings? what.
Build the cheapest fort you can make. Add a temple and lab. Don't build forts adjacent to each other, don't build temples/labs outside of forts.

That should work well enough to get you started.
>magic? what.
Hard to give advice without writing a massive essay, magic is really complex. Ask for a specific nation which you want to play and we can do more.

>magic items? I understand this! I just have no idea what research to prioritize to craft them
Construction lets you craft magic items. Every even level (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) gives you new items to craft. Level 8 items are artifacts, you can only forge one per turn and only one of each can exist.

>the fucking unit stat screen remains moonspeak to me still
Attack/Defense are the most important things there. Those indicate chance to hit/dodge attacks respectively.

HP, strength, and their weapons/armor are also important. HP should be obvious, strength and weapons determine damage dealt, armor prevents enemies dealing damage to you.

The rest you can mostly ignore.
>>
>>161273010
I don't have an answer for your question, but I'd suggest you take a few more points in secondary magic paths.

e.g.
>N9E2 St Fert
Making that N9E4 gives you +2 reinvig on sacreds.
>W9N2/N9W2 Wadjet
Making that W9N4 gives you +4hp on sacreds, and lets you break into nature magic.

Both of those would cost you about a scale at most.

>>
>>161274130
Yes that's a good point. I'm wondering what kind of tweaking is in order; obviously there are some good minor blesses, but what about dom score? I haven't done enough testing with sacreds to know if dom 5, 6 or 7+ is better for maximizing Colossi.

In my most recent tests I was recruiting 2 Elephants, 2 Colossi, and 2 archers a turn, with indie commanders and priest as leaders as necessary, but I'm not sure this is optimal. Maybe it's better to get 5 sacreds and no eles, or all eles and no sacreds until expansion is done.

Most general advice: Find out what the strengths and weaknesses of your nation is. Do you have strong mages and spells, but weak expansion potential? You might need an awake pretender that can fight.

Got unique spells you can't easily access with your national mages? Maybe make a god that can go for them.

Got potentially powerful sacred units? Build a major bless after their strengths(nature bless for high HP sacreds, water bless for sacreds with good kill potential, etc)

Scales are fairly straightforward, but also depends on your nations needs. Do you rely on high resource troops, get prod. How much depends on how good these troops are.

No brainers are almost always Growth 3. This will just help you immensely towards mid-lategame. It will just exponentially increase your income. Order 3 is also good if you have the points for it, it never hurts to have more money, but for some nations more money is mandatory to get anywhere. Others might not require it as much. If money is not a huge issue, a popular build is Misfortune 3 coupled with Luck 3, because it increases event chance, and luck increases the chance for every event to be beneficial.

Magic is mostly important for factions that have small mages with bad research. If your de-facto research mage has 7RP and you run drain 2, he'll only have 5RP, which will hurt your research immensely. If your de-facto researchers has something like 13 research, that drain won't hurt as much. Equally magic makes cheap inexpensive researchers into research powerhouses, so if rushing specific spells is in your strategy, magic might be well worth taking.

There are always exceptions that thrive on weird scales, like Kalisa and Yomi love Turmoil, Arco are lazy Greeks and research better in Sloth, and MA Ulm + Man fucking hate magic and can work unimpeded in Drain scales.

>>
>>161281040
It sounds lame as fuck, but it's best to play a nation that looks interesting to you. Now at the moment you probably don't have enough information about the game and nations to have an opinion like that. I owned the game for a year not really playing it until I found out about MA Ermor and decided that was what I wanted to do. In retrospect there's a number of reasons why they're not a great nation for learning the ropes but at least it got me playing the game. That's what matters.

1. How many forts/castles should I be making?
2. When not building other commanders should I just spam researchers?
3. Is there a research "limit" per castle?
4. Is investing in local defense worth it?
4a. What about provinces that have a buffer?

It depends on what you want to do. Picking your favorite will get you in the ring but you're going to need some guidance if you want to really fight. To that end, I suggest you play Sauromatia with Cirno's guide. you can only really play against ai until the midgame, i generally just play the first 20-40 turns, expanding and building with various races, pretenders, and practicing.

it gets real fucking dull real fucking quick when you roll out your mass mages with evo 6 and the ai hasn't even expanded very well and spams shitty spells at you and gets steamrolled.

it's like you have all the firepower in the world and not even a bottle on a wall to shoot at.
>>
>>161281685

>1. How many forts/castles should I be making?
This is a tough question to answer but generally you should have as many as you can afford to produce out of, starting your first fort as soon as you can.

>2. When not building other commanders should I just spam researchers?
Magi are prioritized over other commanders 9 times out of 10. Indie commanders are a good choice for troop ferrying as not to waste a fort turn.

>3. Is there a research "limit" per castle?
No

>4. Is investing in local defense worth it?
Always get at least 1 to prevent scouts from conquering your land. 6 makes the province say that the defense is quite well organized, 10 reduces unrest by 1 per turn without killing population so that is good for blood hunting provinces. I mostly leave my provinces at 1.

>4a. What about provinces that have a buffer?
No idea what you mean by this

Never, they are shit.

1) As many as you feel your economy can handle. General rule of thumb is to always have started your first forts construction year 1, preferably during summer/autumn. Forts will be your main recruitment hubs since they pull resources from adjoining provinces, but they are also there to let you recruit mages. If you are still pulling in cash as you are recruiting troops and mages(a mage a turn is the ideal), build more forts.

2) Mages are super important, so you should always try to recruit as many of them as possible. Always recruit one if you can, and put it to research if you have no other task for it.

3) No. Research away

4) Always put 2-3 PD in a province after you take it, to ensure enemies cannot just take it with a scout. I usually increase PD to 15-20 in provinces where I'm building forts, to prevent random event attacks.

4a) What do you mean?

5) Sirrushes are not great unfortunately, very expensive for what they do. I wouldn't get more than a few
>>
if a scout pops out by himself and takes an internal province, the player who owned the scout comes out worse off right?
not only losing 25g, but also map positioning, and scouting information, whereas the player who had the province taken just crushes any units the scouting player cares to waste recruiting or buying pd
>>
>>161282075
I don't see how you can use AI for anything other than expansion against indies only. I keep trying to use singleplayer to try out early-midgame stuff but by the time I meet the computer I have such an unrealistic lead in province count that any conclusion I could draw wouldn't be applicable to multiplayer. There's just absolutely no meat to AI games.

Oh no it most certainly cheats. And it's still terrible.

Try out a few AI games, they can be fun to learn the ropes and it's satisfying to annihilate your enemies. But multiplayer is the real meat of this game. Luckily its very easy to get into a play-by-email games, does not take a great deal of time or effort, unless you join many games. (or git gud enough to survive until endgame)

>>161282742
The scout doesn't die. He just snagged the province, costing you income. Then he sneaks out. If you don't have dudes in range to recapture it, he can deny your income for more than one turn effectively for free.

The only way this hurts the guy with the scout is if he does it to his ally, because then his ally will be mad at him.
>>
Oi admin, Midgard has staled twice in a row now
>>
>>161282742
That 25g scout just stole a province that an expansion party had to secure, causes you to waste time trying to take it back, and they can stealth away at any point. The player that lost that province is much worse off and that's even before you factor in stuff like your other provinces being cut off or traps.

Also I'd like to point out that even though the game has started, people can still write up nation fluff, because you can hothead mods during play and as long as only the name and descr values are changed, there will be no adverse effect as those are just user-facing strings and aren't passed through save files.

At the time I write this message, I am currently fighting three nations: Hinnom, Agartha, and Vanheim, the last two having just now attacked me. It is now late game, and this war could well decide the route the game takes.

Hinnom has reached out to you with global messages denouncing me, posts in thread, and no doubt extensive direct communications pointing to what a threat I am.

To be clear, I am a threat. I am a threat to his current dominance of the game. I am the only player at this stage with a similar number of provinces. And, at this stage, I have slightly more, or did upon invading Vanheim.

However, I am not a late-game power. I am EA Ulm that has put themselves into a good position. (Summod) Hinnom, by contrast, is a lategame power. They have extensive bloodhunting. They have, at this point, level 9 blood and are summoning Grigori, seirrim, and are even forging contracts. They have a battery of horror casters who have just hit my lands with 5 simaltaneous casts, which were followed by multiple Melqart SCs.
They have a lead, they have had a lead, and, as the game progresses, they will continue to have a lead until they win.
I represented a threat to that by recently growing to be the same size in a series of rapid wars. The most recent of these wars is against Vanheim, who is explicitly allied to Hinnom. As Hinnom has informed you, Vanheim was to flank me when I went to war with Hinnom, and was in the perfect position to do so. I learned of this plan due to vanheim's clumsy attempt to mislead me by providing me with untrue information on repeated occasions. Some discussions with players they had contacted revealed these plans, and I responded.
(pt 1/2).

>>161287365
Oh hey my name autofills on this PC.

The best I've got is that the Black Wolfkin are named after the giant wolf spiders the Murmarish humans ride. Then something about Anansi and African spider myths? Hmm, the Ogre commanders' sailing explains how they came to Murmar (from somewhere vaguely "across the sea") but not the how or why. Ogres are just too much of a blank slate for me to start with.

They're associated in this case with sailing, fungus, slime, and thing vile. Vicars indicate a highly organized and hierarchical religion. Really these guys seem a whole lot more civilized than your typical ogres. Hmm, sailing, mundane research, and unexpectedly civilized. Maybe they're English?
>>
>>161290464

Hinnom now invades me, and calls on your assistance. Let us be clear about the state of the war:

The difference in size between Hinnom and me is indisputably minimal. This is more than compensated for with his blood economy. In addition, they have as their current allies Agartha and Vanheim. Agartha is the third largest player in the game, after the two of us, and is enough to easily tilt the war in Hinnom's favor, despite having a massive border with Hinnom and being far more threatened by him. Vanheim, prior to my invasion, was smaller, but still in the top half. They have conquered two nations, were working on their third, and still have a large number of thugs and a large amount of coastline to effortlessly deploy them against.

As it is, this is more than I can hope to defeat on my own, and is certainly more than enough to prevent me from posing a threat to Hinnom.

And players hoping that I will cripple hinnom enough to give them a chance had best think again: As they plead with you to fight me, they are now marching to conquer the rest of Asia.

So, I instead bring you my counter proposal: Do not attack me. Instead, turn around and make this war even. Invade Hinnom. Disrupt their bloodhunting. Tear down their forts. Distract and slow their snowballing just as they ask you to slow mine.

If you merely remove me, you hand them the game. If you enmesh them in a multi-front war, just as I already have been enmeshed, then you will have a chance at victory.

Such a conflict between titans is necessary for the other powers to have a chance - but the conflict must not be one-sided as it has been.

If you fight them, I will pledge, as I have been pledging, to continue the attack on them. If you do not, but instead attack me to grab a piece of the pie, do not think I will preserve this chance for you by attacking Hinnom on my own, despite being besieged from all other fronts. Instead, my energies will go to destroying you.

Final post:
As full disclosure, and to prove my statement as to the size of the people I am fighting, here is a graph which I requested from Sauro via the arrangment he has offered everyone: 100 gold for a graph.

As you can see, it shows me with a small current province lead, recently gained and the two players fighting me as the other two leaders, both of which are better late game nations.

The blue line leading for the first half of the game was Rlyeh, not Ulm.

>>161291117
Berytos does not border me. Agartha does, but not on a route Hinnom would take. Arco is between us, but Hinnom is raiding me with a mix of horror casts and SCs, and has a devil army that can reach my capital within two or three turns. Attacking me with any of those does not require a border.

So first off, in what fucking language is 1 Melqurt multiple? Unless your turn file has been fucked up, you should only be seeing 1. If you see more than 1, I'm worried.
Second, I personally intensely dislike Se'ir because of how they failed me in NoBully, and will likely not be using them. Just a personal preference, I'd rather have other shit.
Third, you're hiding the fact that I'm just barely getting into what I'd call 'lategame', as is Agartha . . . while you've researched how many things up to 9? While you have how many death gems per turn due to the sickle? And while I won't deny my blood eco being stronger than yours (and I *know* you have one btw) I've done the battle of tarts vs blood before . . . blood didn't win.

You claim I intend to attack the rest of Asia? Has TC attacked me? Has Agartha? I have not, and will not, attack those that have not struck first against me or my allies - these claims are hurtful and unfounded. EA Ulm is pretty good lategame, good enough to contest with (summod) Hinnom if both have similar resources.

246 is currently showing 2 units, described as "mainly melqarts."

Anyone who believes that a blood nation with horror spam, SCs, and armies of demons isn't *the* end-of-the-world threat absent a massive skill/power gap is mistaken. My two hunted provinces don't compare.

Hello, probably Hinnom.
>>161297145
I have a decent late game, but it's not out of substantial national advantages. Summod brings Ulm from swarms of RoS casters to about 1/32. I have maybe 5 or so active right now, most of which are containing vanheim, and all of which are useless against horrors/melqarts.

I didn't pay for research/gems/income, but previously I lagged on gems and lead on research/income. When both nations have level 9 schools, though, the research lead stops being as meaningful.

My income is higher but it is late game, and it is largely higher because I'm not bloodhunting half my provinces.
>hinnom has shit blood in summod
That really means that his startup cost is pretty high. When you have 2-3 bloodhunters in half your provinces, all of which have dousing, the fact that it cost you a lot to develop that blood economy compared to mictlan is irrelevant to the fact that you have one, and have the mages to fully exploit it.

In any case, Nicknight has asked me to convey that he is not fielding swarms of Seirrim - he is choosing to focus on devils, storm demons, and demon knights instead.

I'm sorry for not getting to this sooner.

You have a very complex puzzle. Your Austral humans wear plate armor and ride spiders. They apparently don't practice any magic and they are not priests. Your ogres somehow have great sailing, bronze age armor, and an extraordinarily varied amount of magic. On top of that, your pretender god does not lose magical skill upon death.

I think the way to start solving this conundrum is to define the relationship between the humans and ogres. After all, if ogres are typically dumb man eaters then why are there any humans around at all? Why are don't those humans have their own mages and priests? Did those kickass spiders have something to do with it? Were the ogres so impressed with them that they really named their sacreds after them? Once you start answering those questions you can force the rest of the pieces to fall into place.

I hope that helps! Also the pic is an ogre faced spider. Could that tie into things at all?

>I've done the battle of tarts vs blood before . . . blood didn't win.
Have you tried vampires? They basically shut down my use of tarts (outside large armies) when I fought a nation using them.

>>161297551
>I have a decent late game, but it's not out of substantial national advantages.
You have Steel Maidens, amazing stealthy recruitable troops for 14g that take buffs very well. You can lead them around with stealthy mages to buff them.

Hinnom's only troops which match this are summoned, much more expensive, and very vulnerable to Demon Cleansing.

>That really means that his startup cost is pretty high. When you have 2-3 bloodhunters in half your provinces, all of which have dousing, the fact that it cost you a lot to develop that blood economy compared to mictlan is irrelevant to the fact that you have one, and have the mages to fully exploit it.
No, it means he has significant upkeep (2-3 bloodhunters per province costs him 24 gold per province per turn just from the bloodhunters). It means he's taking additional unrest and pop loss on top of the normal damage caused by blood hunting. It means he had a significant deficit in research or other fields while spending the 700 gold per province to set it up. It means if you raid his provinces and kill the blood hunters, he needs a lot of money to replenish them.

Hinnom's blood hunting is simply not comparable to strong blood nations, even in summod.
>>
>>161297551
Nah, I don't bother being anon when posting propaganda for my nation. Also, 246 is a scouting error. I mean, come on, you should have seen the Melqart take the province, don't act like you thought I sent 2 into one province.

Also, Hinnom's bloodhunting is really fucking obnoxious to deal with. I honestly prefer EA Abysia's hunting, since I don't have to worry about my hunters reducing provinces to pop 0 nearly as much. You also have the benefit of being able to recruit fantastic units to my . . . giants. And I'm pretty sure 400ish gold of Ulmites kills 400ish gold of Melqart.
>>
>>161298137
Vampires do work, if you have a sufficient amount of them, but that takes a really long time to work toward. And it doesn't really solve the main problem with Tarts, which is A/S pathing that can teleport/trapeze onto demon armies and, with proper kitting, will rarely die to the demons. Tartarians without the ability to ritual move aren't anywhere near as difficult to deal with.
>>
>>161297402
Storm fucks over pretty much all their recruitable infantry, but if they've gone full UNLIMITED BLOOD WORKS you're pretty fucked.
I hear assassin spam works pretty decently. Pretend you're the one with asshole batman instead.
>>
>>161297402
You need to counter their raids with ambushes and raids of your own, and screw over their blood economy as much as possible.
Alternatively, go underwater. They can't do shit to you down there.
>>
>>161298343
I found the most useful part of tarts to be them trampling all over my enemy's lands, which vampires really helped prevent.

If he's just teleporting them onto demon armies, maybe some more mages with anti-SC scripts? S2 without LotNS can paralyze, with LotNS can Soul Slay. You should have quite a few of them to send with armies.

It doesnt feeblmind, it just turns it into a unit. A commander being feebleminded can be cured by a "Healer" or gift of health, which is a bit hard.

However you can turn units into commanders easily using either Gift of Reason or Divine Name, which is what you want.

I do not plan Astral Corruption, no. I'd cast Looming Hell though if I thought it'd work against Poison Golems.
>>
>>161318904
Well, mainly, how to ensure I'll have the gems for it. An awake rainbow is somewhat of a risky proposition, and I'm not sure I want to give up a major bless. A high dom rating is a must, since the effect of Dark Skies is based on dominion.

Considering Agartha claims not to have taken 4 of Ulm's provinces this turn (the number required for our side to break even) I find it extremely unlikely. Unless someone else joined the bandwagon, or indies assailed him in some place I don't have scouts.
>>
>>161319271
To be fair, hinnom and vanheim probably have lost provinces to Ulm. Of course, Ulm has probably lost provinces to them, too, and hinnom has been making consistent gains against kailasa. So he hasn't lied about losing provinces, though he might be lying about positional dominance.

"Number of horrors among every battlefield" is not, at all, the ranking system of how dangerous horrors are. It's the strategic flexibility that Send Horror offers and Horror Harmonica does not. Horror Harmonica is one province per turn. Send Horror is many provinces per turn.
>>
>>161319603

Huh. As I said, I lost ground to Ulm . . . not sure where the fuck they lost the other provinces to be honest, if it wasn't even to Agartha.

Either indies were really brutal to them this turn, or someone else hopped on the pain train. Or Vanheim actually managed to thug a bunch of Ulm's provinces without the Vanjarls instantly dying this time.
>>

I was honestly more confused by the Dom9 desu, not the dormant. Seems a little excessive when Dom7 will do in most cases. Just make the Pans from your capital, they aren't sacred so you can make 7 white centaurs (8 w/4 more temples built later) per turn. This should be enough.
>>
>>161322274

For god's sake, go to temp 3 and max out luck and growth.

You could probably safely drop Dom to 6 or 7 as well. Pan has cheap temples.
>>
>>161325238
>>161325332
It's because Dark Skies is dominion dependent. I'd like to get a stable dom 10 as soon as possible. 5 temples is a given, 10 takes a while, 15 maybe in the endgame.

Sacrificing temp for luck/growth is probs a decent idea, though.

My opinion of the buffs to R'lyeh for summod: The polypol change is pointless, I never really bothered taking them above land ever. They drowned too quickly, can't seige for shit, and are worthless in a fight.
The cost reductions are much appreciated, and make the pricing of the Aboleths and Mindlords fair for what is an extremely shitty path combo (W/S, ick) and a seriously inferior set of item slots.

Blessing of Limne is for all UW nations, but it by far helps R'lyeh the most. The addition of that spell is the single biggest change for R'lyeh in summod.

Oceania is total shit, though comparatively less shit outside of summod (because non-summod Hinnom, Abysia, Machaka, Helheim, etc) are *real* shit.

Also it's sometimes important to track who wins those games, on nations that don't win much. One of them was vava_grey . . .

The main reason Oceania's win rate is so high though is because they're a boring as fuck nation, so scrubs not seeking wins won't rack up the losses on them.

Blatant Lying has rarely helped anyone, you know. You attacked me unprovoked after finding out that I was staying out of any Alliances in order to deal with Helheim. Baseless claims from fictional parties is worth less than nothing, and the loss of support you should receive from doing something like that is staggering. You are a warmonger that does not even attempt to fabricate reasons for what you do, instead throwing out asinine ramblings hoping that you are scary looking enough that people will nod and accept absolute falsehoods.

I think is appropriate that No one who matters believes Sauro anymore after they sided with you and report fake news, purposefully trying to put down any real information with 'But you are wrong because I said so.' If Sauro had any graphs of the game that supported you, he would be able to post them to support your position. At best he can only point out technicalities; too bad even that small bit of actual reporting tears down your narrative entirely just to get out an insult.

MapmakingIsHard, Ea Arco vs Ermor. I'm not sure how much of my victory I should attribute to national power, but I was still pretty scrubsy that game, such as when I lost an entire artifact kitted army to your fear dog with no retreat. I will say you should have a counter in mind for RoS before attacking Arco though.

>>

What would the totems do? Do you mean totem spirits or totem poles?
>>
>>161350567
basically it summons a fragile, immobile spellcaster emblematic of the path. So a Rhino totem would be an earth mage or a Hippo totem would be a water mage etc. I'm not sure what to align to each of the paths yet. I'm thinking of making them have different levels on account of the difference in base path strength. Since they can't be scripted, you also kinda know what each of them will do.

>>
>>161351204

>>
>>161351204
>>161351284
but yeah, if it defaults to self-buffing then I'd swap it out to autospell units rather than mage units. The hard part would be picking out useful spells that would be worth dropping the totem for rather than scripting, aside from evo spam and skelly spam. I had envisioned the Rhino totem to cast Legions of Steel and SoG, for instance, but putting both on autocast seems very strong.
>>

Would these spells require gems?

>>161351374

>>
>>161351602
Yeah. The idea would be that it'd be a 1 gem summon, but do more for you than an elemental or swarm cast.
>>
>>161351339
Play Ulm, Lemuria, or Ermor and make a lich pretender with some combat paths.
>>
>>161351681
I'd pay 1D for a free Skelespammer.
>>
>>161351478
If they were totem objects of some kind they could #onebattlespell a spell - it'd be casted before the combat started. Say the spirit grants its aid as it is able.
I believe this would require them to be commander summons. They could be totem objects carried around by servants on a litter or something, and then appear during combat. Could even add like 1d6 mooks as #batstartsums.
>>
>>161351803
Right. I'm actually considering not giving a D2 totem just on account of how strong that'd be. IDK, though - Machaka's already good at skelly spam and people fighting Machaka are liable to already field counters for it. It's something that'll probably need a fair bit of tweaking to balance.
>>
how does the pocket lich and starspawn artifacts work? do they self buff?
>>
>>161351890
Oh, they could work as items that summon the totem, similar to carcator. That was the other version of them that I had in mind. The only reason I was reticent to do this one is that I wanted to divide them out over various levels of research.
>>
>>161352024
They work differently, actually. Pocket Lich summons a demilich, basically, who then casts spells as an unscripted mage. Nethgull is an item that gives the commander autocast - Nethgull which seems to have a spell list.
>>
>>161297564
Alright I think I cracked the code. I've been brainstorming this for most of the day and while some of my favorite ideas didn't stick for one reason or another I've got the shape of the thing at least.

So, the ogres are originally from far north notScandinavia (Murmar has the Norse pantheon for pretender selection). They stole the art of sailing from men and fled out into the open sea, running from some sort of calamity. Lost and adrift at sea for an unreasonable time, they eventually wash up on the shore of notAfrica in the middle of a magical empire suffering slow decline and a calamity of their own. Spider (the ever-present animistic prankster spirit) decides to play a trick and makes a bet with the other animals that he can make Man act like Ogre, Ogre act like Man, and both act like Spider. I still haven't filled in a lot of the details obviously but the basic pattern I derived from the roster was that the two species basically switched spaces. I like the added bit that alone they each failed but together they can hopefully ascend and become the sole rulers of the world.

So Spider sends Man out into the wilderness, discarding most of what we call civilization in order to hunt with the ferocity of Ogre and the finesse of Spider. (I'd probably add stealth onto the Murmarish humans, they're pretty much useless anyway) Meanwhile, Spider leads Ogre into Man's houses where they learn the secrets of literacy, magic, and rigid hierarchy. Just for laughs, they eat a primarily fungus-based diet and utterly eschew meat. The two species settle into their new roles over a long period of time and the humans re-integrate into Ogre society. As a bonus Spider is cared for by Man and worshiped by Ogre.

I also had the idea of telling the lore in-game in the style of a traditional fable with the passages split up between the different unit descriptions, letting me rely on symbolism and get away with an unreliable narrator. I'm not sure if I'm clever enough for that.
>>
>>161348659
Liches are nice because you can use them for suicide attacks, and you don't have to worry about assassination. You can also cast spells under Astral Corruption. What are the horrors gonna do, kill you?
Ghost King is like a mini-Lemuria thanks to his freespawn, and being both sneaky and flying is very nice to have. He's also significantly harder to kill than a lich, but isn't immortal.
>>
>>161352291
You definitely can't give them stealth now.
>>
>>161353184
Yeah for sure, I meant more in the form of viewing it as a man-made nation and not the result of a random number generator. I just hit the character limit and that explanation was one of the things I cut instead of making another post.

If I have the choice between Stygian Rains and Fog Warriors when im looking to protect my argy against(potentially multiple casts of) Rain of Stones or Earthquake are there any advantages/disadvantages between the two(besides Fog having the chance to pop on each hard hit)?

I also experienced some battles where x2 Rain of stones was cast, and a battle where x1 Rain of Stone + Earthquake was cast in which both sides had Fog Warriors cast but barely anything had their mistform popped during the AoE spell. I was under the impression that normal tactical use of these spells is that you're supposed to overlay Fog Warriors before each Rain of Stones and Earthquake cast?( as example:turn 1 Fog Warriors -> Rain of Stones, turn 2 -> Fog Warriors -> Rain of Stones.) But the results of these battles leads me to believe Fog Warriors isnt easily popped by these AoE spells and 1 cast of Fog Warriors is enough for multiple spells of RoS or EQ. So did I just get extremely lucky, am i missing something or what?

And if there is a storm staff in the battle and a mage is scripted to cast storm, will they cast it or will they go off script doing something else?

Storm Staff casts storm on turn 0. You can't have 2 storms in battle.

If there's no way to cast a spell (if it already exists as a battlefield enchant, if you can't reach any enemy with disintegrate, if there's no sacreds to bless etc.), the mage won't cast it. A single cast of fog warriors will reduce pretty much every cast of RoS/Earthquake down to 1 damage. I've never seen anyone advocate rebuffing with fog warriors between casts. Rebuffing with Fog Warriors on each turn can be useful if the enemy is slinging magical evocations at you. That's the only time I'd do it.

I think what you're missing is that RoS/EQ aren't magical damage, so they need to do 25+ damage (after protection) in order to pop mistform. This is extremely unlikely.

As for Stygian Rains vs Fog Warriors, I'd rather have fog warriors. Stygian Rains is only 15 protection (assuming unarmored mage), which multiple RoS or EQ can get past. Fog Warriors will reduce damage to 1 almost always.
>>
>>161362534
For big doomstack battles I always do Fog Warriors - something else - sth else - sth else - Fog Warriors. Never needed to do that every turn too.

Both sides can put up storm simultaneously. You can't cast more than one storm per side, except maybe with multiple staves.

>>
>>161362534
Informative post thanks, knowing that it takes 25 damage to pop mistform is good to know.

For Stygian Rains, is their a distinction in the invulnerability modifier apart from normal protection? The spell descriptions make it sound like its a separate stat thing like a elemental resistance modifier but for physical damage(that it'll block out the first 15 physical damage and then any leftover damage is calculated against protection). The way you're describing it, you're making it sound like magical protection buff like barkskin?

>>161364525
Any successful strike on the target is reduced to 1 point of damage. The mistform is
canceled by any hit that does 25 or more points of damage after armor. It is also canceled
by any hit from a magical weapon. Mistform also has a simple 1% chance of expiring on
any hit. The damage reduction occurs even on a hit which causes the mistform to expire.

Yes, unless they are com slaves (and even then, they stick to script on Linux boxes, including Llamaserver)

Let's say I have 100 blood slaves and a single unit with blood. Do I summon Vampire Lords or empower random units so I can get a bloodhunt going?
>>
>>161379539
Why not summon Vampire lords and bloodhunt with them?
>>
>>161379539
>summon Vampire Lords
That's going to be hard if you dont have a single unit with blood, senpai. You are going to have to empower some guys before.

If you have a D2 mage you dont care about or even a D3 you can empower that guy and bloodhunt for a while with a dousing rod, since you are going to need 125 slaves for B3 and then 77 for your first Vampire lord.
Maybe empower indie commanders too so you have more bloodhunters. Again, remember the dousing rods, since the jump from B1 to B2 is huge.
>>
>>161379740
I failed to read the first sentence, sorry. If you have the D4B3 go for vampires, if you dont have it get moar slaves.
>>
As a new player playing against AI to learn how everything works how the fuck do I deal with AI spamming Vanhere Berserkers?

They absolutely chew through every kind of unit I deploy against them; nothing I have tried has worked and I'm all out of newbie ideas.
Do I just spam archers and hold the line against them while my relatively weak force of flyers alpha-strikes their commander? That's what I'm leaning towards doing but I haven't tried it yet because I'm about 10 turns away from total destruction and want to know if there's a better way
>>
Interesting note on Summod Shinu - currently you can put the gatestone on the hearts (or empower to S2 with a coin I guess, per heart) and teleport them around. It only needs to be cast on a mountain, the heart functions on any province.
>>
>>161380248
Use more magic and mages. More specific advice isn't possible if you don't tell us what nation you're playing.
>>
>>161380415
sorry, Fomor
so I've worked out the reason why I was getting so absolutely fucked was my solution was "throw more giants into the blender" when I should have been making Nemedians

>>
Gods almighty, I wish we had this turn pace in all other games. Bless you, everyone.
>>
>>161380415
also I have enchanting 6, conjuration 6, everything else at 3 and a fair amount of mages (8 combat, 4 "combat" and 24 dedicated researcher sages (with more every turn!)) so I've not completely fucked up
>>
I'm thinking for one of my next games to start writing a "monthly war journal" from the perspective of a commander in a specific nation, interpreting and detailing what happens each month and what course of action the nation decided to take in response, as an exercise of creativity/writing.

good idea y/n ? has anyone else done it before?
>>
>>
>>161380853

>>
>>161380519
Druids spamming Thunder Strike is the standard Formorian strategy.
>>
>>161380589
>8 combat, 4 "combat" and 24 dedicated researcher sages
That's a pretty low number, I think. Depends on what turn it is though. With Enchantment, you can spam horde of skeletons to tie up most enemies indefinitely. You could also theoretically put lighting bolts into play too, but you'll need more evocation in order to cast Storm in order to power up fir bolg druids to where they can cast it, as you need it in bulk and you don't have nearly enough mages in combat to do that and the hordes of skeletons. So research that and work on massing your druids from the forts outside of your capital while you use capital turns to recruit at least one fomorian king and a bunch of nemedian sorceresses. If your pretender can forge a winged helmet, then great. Otherwise, you're going to need an air-random fomorian king. He can then forge the winged helmet, and then with that equipped can forge bag of winds, which will allow you to get plenty of A4 nemedian sorceresses and that particular A random king will get up to A6, though A5 is good enough for the cool stuff anyway, namely the Queens of Elemental Air.
>>
>>161380925
That's a no then.

BigBlogClub was popular, and one guy still blogs a lot of games. I don't think anyone has done it from the perspective of a commander though.

>>

>>
>>161380519
>>161380589
I think the best strategy would be Air Elementals, and lots of them. Get any A2 or higher mage, give them a couple of air gems, and tell them to Summon Air Elemental.

If you have N1 mages, they can cast Tangle Vines, which will pin the Vanhere down in order for your troops to kill them.

Taking alteration to 4 lets N1 mages cast swarm for a nature gem, which will bog down the vanhere while your archers can freely shoot at them.

>8 combat, 4 "combat" and 24 dedicated researcher sages
That's very low. Might be enough, depending how many vanhere the AI is using, but focus on getting more after you deal with this crisis.

They do lost steam a bit in lategame, since they rely heavily on their cap-only sacreds and have poor research.

However, their ridiculous earlygame and midgame make up for it. Overall, they're a very strong faction.

Not having P3 in expansion is HORRIBLE (Abysia might even be the best nation to blind expand with, but in terms of overall expansion prowess, I personally find them mid-tier at best even with P3 - it's easy and simple but at least in my hands most nations expand better) but as the game progresses, at least with Summod/Magic expanded, I wouldn't mind since you'll most likely be relying on fire and blood summons.

Of course, you probably ain't going to get into workable midgame position if you have to expand with slot and without awake pretender.
>>
Ulm, are you around?
We have something to discuss.

I got the boar event in one of my forest provinces, how do I actually kill the boar though? I patrolled the area to 0 unrest but it keeps rising if I leave for a while
Also I cast Mother Oak, but I didn't get any added Sites at my capital, do I simply get more N gem income without the game telling me anything?
>>
>>161388092
As regular stealthy units, finding it is a dice roll. The more units the easiest it is to find it. Also flying units or units with high precision make it easier, check the manual for specifics.

About gemgen globals, there isn't a magic site to show you that your global is up (even if it would make a lot of sense), you can either check your gem income (to do this you can left click any of your gems) or the global slots.
Your gem income also goes up by a lot after casting any gem generator globals, so you can check that too.

I feel that as it stands, access to elemental planes/agartha/hell/void/hades is fine, its just that perhaps that the planes themselves could be more useful. For a large investment in digging a hole/portal to hell and creating an army that can effectively fight the demons, you get a few citadels that can recruit somewhat good units. While they are nice for delaying the game with making the other dudes search for your last castle through all the elemntal planes, its better to use the resources to try and just end the game rather than take a detour to non-Elysium planes. Trying to fight a lord in their plane and citadel is pretty much suicide because of all the fodder they have in addition.

The class war is over, and the workers won. Sure there are still remnants of the old elite left, but the modern bourgeois is almost always made up of the nouveau riche, a far better alternative than the old money.

Except for in the US, who never had a proper class war. It will come soon.
>>
>>161414541
Fucking brits, a ton of our exports go to Britain an we are going to get fucked over now.
>>
>>161414541

The benefit is that it's far easier to enter the realms of the nouveau riche, as opposed to the old elite. This still has the danger to develop into established layers of the elite, which in my opinion good social democratic policies can help prevent(reduction on what you can inherit, banning of exclusive private schools, state funding to both lower and higher educations)

The establishment is not impossible to enter. Family and contacts help, but is not 100% guarantee or requirement. This varies from country to country of course, I've heard France is all about the "old boys club" when it comes to Politics, not sure about Britain, but I can safely say this is not the case in Germany + Nordics.

Again this is only arguing a European perspective, America is kinda fucked in another way, but that has more to do with oligarchy.
>>
>>161414862

(forgot to add)

Brexit is more a cry out against establishment values. You can enter the political elite, on its terms, which has a very strict culture and rules. It is different from the general populace, or at least a large portion of it. Politicians and the elite of a country(which includes successful journalists, editors and other people within culture) have become very different from the common man of where they once came from.

This is more of a cultural elite rather than a socioeconomic one(although at times they are your socioeconomic elites too, they can intersect)

EAT THE RICH, CLASS WAR NOW!

I'm nordic and appreciate how much humanity has improved since we first appeared as a species, but I find that the rich serve no societal purpose that cannot be filled by other social groups or institutions. They are obsolete drains on society, regardless of whether they 'earned' their wealth or not.

>>
>>161415272
desu my main beef is with rent-seeking and capital, earning money simply because you have lots of money already, not with people getting paid highly.
>>
>>161415135

I'm Noridc as well, but the rich serves as a point of inspiration, something to strive towards. Why develop world leading IT-sytems if you didn't think you could get rich from it? Some might want to do it for prestige and recognition alone, but if we had no way for people to get rich off their innovation I bet the Nordics(sweden especially) wouldn't be among the world leading in IT right now.

We don't need to fetishise our rich like the Americans do, but we should realize that we are inherently greedy creatures, and that motivates us towards greatness. We need the duality of a strong state that represents its peoples interests and puts the greater above the induvidual, but we also need to allow for that induvidualism.

This duality is what has made the Nordic Model so great. Success, with modesty. Socialism, with Capitalism. We are Ragha, the Dual Kingdom.

Government involvement in the free market introduces many of the market failures it claims to stop.
You need to realize that government officials are rational/selfish actors just like the leaders of big corporations.

Now if you want to claim that the governments are falling for some free-market meme, you'd need to show me a free market.

In the absence of regulation, what you get isn't a free market, it's collusion, price-fixing and monopolies. It's in the direct interest of everyone selling in a free market to avoid competition as much as possible, so that's kinda inevitable.

Monopolies are very much a thing of mixed economies.
Besides natural monopolies, that are largely a myth, and even theoretically only have power due to being able to service for cheaper prices, most monopolies arise due to legal limitations introduced by government regulations.
What happens is that due to concentrated benefits and rational apathy of government regulators, the markets in which anti-trust laws regulate tend to be co-opted by large businesses that lobby and buy out those who make the laws.
These large businesses then set up barriers to entry that give them a monopoly.

Monopolies are incredibly unstable in a free market, due to under-cutting and, particularly for cartels/collusion, businesses breaking pacts in secret.

>>161418813

>>161415597

There's a difference between 'being rewarded' and 'rich old white men who between like 6 of them control more wealth than 3 billion other people'. That difference is the difference between a world that treads water technologically (our one, funding for research not directly related to making money is rarer than hen's teeth) and one that has already conquered the solar system (10% of human effort on technological advancement and we'd be resonance-mining asteroids).

>>

Please take your /pol/ level fake-economics shilling elsewhere. Every free economy from dubai is a price-fixed underclass-riddled catastrophe - the ability of business to buy out regulator-decisions simply proves that regulation is a threat to big business - and the monopolies they inevitably attempt to create. Countries with the strongest regulation and most corruption-free governments also have the least monopoly by volume - you can say otherwise, but the actual evidence, the statistics and experts, say otherwise.

You are perhaps afraid of monopolies. Because they take away from you and your kin? Remove such thoughts from yourself. Surely your hatred of monopolies stems not from your disadvantage from them and instead from a much purer motivations, perhaps a pure moral high ground.

Likewise those that advocate for monopolies do not do so for their own and their kins advantage. They surely must do so because they are evil and detestable.

You can bring up evidence if you have some.
But the logic is quite clear on this.
The truth is for every free-market monopoly you could possibly give me, i can give you a dozen state-enforced monopolies.
I'm not saying the free-market is perfect, but involvement just introduces more imperfections while fixing none.

People have a tendecy to call what is beneficial to them and their surroundings "good" and things that are detrimental to them "evil".

Then another person in other circumstances does something that is beneficial to that another person and that person's surroundings. According to the first person this should also be "good".

However the actions of the another person are detrimental to the first person and the person who should be objectively "good" for doing the very same thing as the first person, is viewed as "evil".

As such multiple hosts of people hold the same view of morality, and deem themselves 'good' and others 'evil' based on their own well-being.

The system works in many European countries, but as I said prior, I can't comment on the American model. However, from my personal perspective, Americas problem is stiffling corporations and their interests.

Still, the social mobility we have today, even in the worst cases of American oligarchy(I'm not counting far corrupter nations like Russia, Brazil, or god forbid any African nations), is FAR better than what we had 400 years ago. You CAN literally come from nothing and get big money. It is possible. But also a bit of a meme in Americas case, when the whole "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" meme keeps millions in poverty because the country refuses to change any of its social policies.

No what I consider objectively evil is killing/destroying for personal gain or the pleasure of doing it. Because unlike actual psychopaths I don't torture people or aimals simply because I am afraid of being caught or punished but because I know it is wrong
I don't understand that last part but I feel you're trying to meme me sort of like you considered your opinions to be objectively right, and mine to be like those of a baby

The word you are looking for is "selfish", not "evil". For a counter-argument, you need look no further than a good person killing/destroying "evil" for the pleasure of knowing that the world will be rid of it. There is an any number of people slaughtering other people claiming to do it for "good" or "greater good" while also deriving pleasure of doing so. Let us not even go into the person who have killed countless people in their personal pursuit of gaining the title "hero".

Implying anyone doesn't.

Anyways, the only objectively good and free nation is MA Ermor. Allies and enemies are equal. Dusk Elders are slightly more equal, but otherwise all skeletons are equal. They free themselves from the tyranny of flesh then willingly fight alongside their brethren against their oppressors. It's not pretty and you might not like it (they certainly don't like you) but it is freedom.

There's no difference for the purpose of this argument because selfishness is evil
>For a counter-argument, you need look no further than a good person killing/destroying "evil" for the pleasure of knowing that the world will be rid of it.
Killing in general is evil indeed but let's be honest someone hunting down murderers and such, while fucked up, is certainly preferable than having the murderers have their way with people. Basically they are more or less the same but the difference is in the outcome
>There is an any number of people slaughtering other people claiming to do it for "good" or "greater good" while also deriving pleasure of doing so.
And that is evil
I mean it's not hard, if some saint magically healed sick and wounded regardless of nation and race and all, then he is objectively good. Anyone can make their own autistic ideas of mixing "what is good for me" and "THE good, wich includes everyone etc" but that should not even be considered

The kicker is that the hyper moralefag later becomes a regretful mass murderer all the while following his "good and moral" path.

One could say that you were "baited" or "trolled" into your position.

What nation is best against undead?

Only thing I've noticed is Marignons Holy Pyre spell looks nice, but with a lvl 2 priest, I think banishment does basically the same damage with no fatigue cost.

marignon. Purge them heretics

In MA? Sceleria by far, as far as I know. Pythium is also good.

Marignon has their own stuff which is also good but mass priest communions is better (Which granted, Marg can also do, but less effectively).

What's the optimal way to script a dragon? Like red dragon and so.

I have tried
>hold, attack once, fire, attack once, fire, attack rear
>Fire closest
>attack rear/archers

Fire closest works great against militias since they are easier to land when they are coming after you in a line instead of around you after you attacked, but I'm not sure anymore.

>>161433336

Do also note, a H2 priest casting Banish does IIRC
25 range
6 aoe
7? damage

F2 casting Holy Pyre is
35 range
3 aoe
21 damage

The bigger difference is banishment is MRN and holy pyre always hits. (Also banish has no fatigue cost I think)
>>
>>161433336
in any age, not just MA.

In a way perhaps powerful death mages are best, because you can mass take control of undead?

Nigga everyone in dominions is evil, save maybe the Agarthans before the seal broke.
They're all genocidal and prone to doing horrible things to the world in the name of victory.

Only the pretender gods are truely evil. The people are only trying to interpret the Pretender gods will for dominion over all of creation.

I'd lay odds if I engage you further, you'd have some weird definitions of the words you used so you're 'right' (if we use your definition of monopoly that isn't the dictionary one, etc).

>Shitters thinking actual competition happens in industries with massive startup costs and legislative barriers to genuine competition

And this is why humanity is doomed. Too bad people don't live long enough to suffer in the ever-more-dystopic future their shitter actions create. Their descendants with worse quality of life will talk about how 'terrible' it was in their lifetimes, too, because vested interest in making the present seem better than the past.
>>
>>161428405

You're implying people didn't scheme their way into money in the past. That's not true. Every single era and nation had that happening, often with a lot of marrying and/or backstabbing... exactly like today.
