Actual game relevant things edition.

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Pythium is actually best against Ermor in the early game, since with Thaum 1 they can do communioned banishment. In a try-hard duel vs Ermor, that's what I'd pick. Awakesnake, cash scales, spam forts, communicants (usually bad, but good for this situation) and rain down level X banishment
>>
>>161434812
Good old Ulm, always stuck playing the Third Reich.
>>
>>161434878
I suppose.

Pythium, Sceleria and Marignon can all do it, just Pythium has their communion special units.

Early game against undead it's really just anyone who doesn't have good priests has trouble with them, otherwise, send priests.
>>
>>161434767
Earthquake, Rain of Stones. A good stopgap (or alternative, if the undead are ethereal) is Solar Rays.

>>

Well, in addition to the communicants, Pythium's magepriests are also the cheapest. Marignon has the advantage of fire elementals (which are REALLY fuckin' nice, even at level 3) but that takes some gem prep and research time whereas ginormous banishment coms come online within just a few turns.

>>161429785
>Remember that any price offered by the market is, by definition, fair.
The utility of gems etc is objective in Dominions 4. It's defined by the game engine, not by our subjective preferences: there are only so many ways to conquer provinces, win games etc, and some methods are more effective at doing so than others.

wind of death specifically says living beings. It applies Decay which doesn't affect undead.
>>
>>161437575
I've seen it kill longdead mang.
>>
>>161437575
>He thinks Decay doesn't affect undead
Okay, I can see that you're new. That's fine. When you want to figure out what a spell does, your best bet is to read the spell's effects on the mod inspector, which you can find in the OP. Some of the effects are not explicitly clear from the spell description.

WoD in particular is actually quite good against certain kinds of massed undead, such as Longdead, LA Agartha's Iron Corpses, and Corpse Constructs because these undead have intentionally low MR.
>>
>>161437575
>Decay which doesn't affect undead.
Incorrect! Decay can and does affect undead, it just tends to wear off before it actually kills them.
>>
>>161437667
longdeads have an age of ~200 out of 500, so unless you're using against some sort of enemy that has super high magic resistance and hundreds of years left it's not going to happen
>>
>>161437575
>>161437762
Oh, and discussing spell effects that you're trying to figure out is totally great and helpful, but you seem to be making an implication wrt balance here >>161437000 which is triggering to some terrible autists like me that care about arguing that sort of thing.

>>161437894
Decay lasts until it is resisted. Given their very low MR, undead are very unlikely to resist it. There is a long time period after the end of the battle where decay and similar effects continue to tick. You can sometimes see the little numbers popping up super fast after a battle is over. As a result of this, WoD and other decay effects can and will age undead to death. I encourage you to try out these and other spells in your game! You may be surprised to find that spells that you had previously discounted are, in fact, quite useful.

>>
>>161438194
Just trying to help out our new friends. Dominions has a lot of opaque mechanics, so it's helpful to point people in the right direction for figuring out how things actually work.
>>
>>161438092
Ok, good point, I'll update my list.

So, undead specific has
Darkness,
Bone Grinding
Rigor Mortis
Wailing Winds (conditionally since not all undead have 50 moral)
Wind of death (conditionally since some undead may age to death)

For anti-undead you have Solar brilliance which blinds everyone.
>>
Should I play this game if I like Dwarf Fortress?
>>
>>161438450
Again, Darkness is not undead-specific (there are other things with darkvision and even things with dark power), Bone Grinding hits undead (weaker v ethereal stuff which, again, isn't always undead, but great against massed chaff like longdead), and Rigor Mortis doesn't affect lifeless units like elementals and golems.

In other words, everything that you listed is conditionally not undead-only. Furthermore, a lot of spells that do hit living things too are particularly good against undead given their normally low HP and prot.
>>
>>161438513

This game, shallower? DF is easy as hell and doesn't ever really get too complex. Almost all of its difficulty is having a godawful archaic clunky interface that requires third party software to properly even use and parse without difficulty. Then ASCII being a relic from the 90s (ASCII is cool and all but damn) makes it even worse. Once you figure out the literal basics of the game, there really isn't much to it beyond discovering random autism like cats soaking up beer into their fur and then drinking it and dying of alcohol overdosing.

This game has way more going on.

Shallower learning curve. You can pick up Dominions and begin playing right away.
Dwarf Fortress is really unintuitive at first. The UI is horrible, there are so many different mods and shit you need to work out before you can even get started, and even then you need to keep looking things up in a guide, you can't figure anything out as you go along. Even if the overall depth may be less, the curve is much steeper.
>>
>>161440820
Hmm, I guess that's a fair way of looking at it. I was just putting more of "The rest of the game" into that learning curve.

I did need to read a quick guide on how to get started on DF to play it, but once I did that I basically figured everything out. That damn interface.
I didn't start reading guides for doms until after a bit, so that part was easy - but I haven't figured everything out at all.

Heavy scales awake expander or N9E2+
>>
>>161441912
Should I go for erf snek, or void lord or kraken or? And, N9 and earth for what reason, specifically?
>>
>>161442089
You need E2 for boots to put on your E random slave mages. That gets you crystal gear and golems. You can get the required E from an awake expander anyways, but it's not automatically included on an N build.

N9 is for making late game golem and tart stuff better.
>>
>>161442089
Anyways, kraken, snek, and wyrm all expand fine and all naturally take the E you want. Water dragon works for expanding too, but you either miss out on E or pay a ton more for it. Assuming that you're playing with summod, the aquatic thing isn't as big of a liability as it is in vanilla. The exact of which one you want depends on what paths and scales you want. Void lord can expand too and can also become an SC midgame which is cool, but it comes with a notable scales hit since it's a more expensive chassis and has the same lack of E as the water dragon.
>>
>>161442238
I'm not sure I'll be able to vie for Gift of Health with Pan in the game. Assuming that's the help with golem/tarts. And how can I expect to cast tartarian gate with at most a native D3 (Generally going to be D2) via Starspawn? And can't Starspawn get E2 to forge boots of earth anyways?
>>
>>161442238
>>161442648
Can't the cap-only starspawn come with E2? I don't think you need to add it to your pretender.
>>
>>161442648
I'm not playing with Summod. Sorry for not clarifying earlier. Yeah, the Void Lord looks nice, but having more scales just seems the safe choice. Speaking of scales... T3L3M3? Or Order3 Mis2?
>>
>>161442671
It's the bless itself that you want. The capacity to fight for GoH is a bonus. R'lyeh has native ring access (well, with crystal coin) which makes boosting D easy and makes getting additional tart summoners possible without empowerment.

>>161442732
yes, but unlike S5 which you can wait and amass pearls for, you NEED access to crystal gear and golems. Rings are a useful bonus by comparison.
>>
>>161442793
Oh. In that case, an amphibious pretender is important if you take an awake. You don't need A the way that EA r'lyeh does since your mages are at least amphibious, but you can't take a kraken or sea dragon

I prefer Order on account of the need for max cash, but I also don't like misf since you can safely dump temp scales and sloth.

The reduced event chances from order effect is very, very minor compared to the event shift from Luck. Order always being coupled with misf is a meme from people that see the synergy and never bothered actually seeing how it affects your game.
>>
>>161462827
This.
Order Luck events are good too, permanent income increases on provinces, thousands of gold in events, free armies

Speaking of Luck, I haven't gone through the events in detail.

Are there any scale combinations that lead to particularly interesting events?
>>
>>161463182
That doesn't make the scales you chose better. You probably could have won with Turmoil/Luck or Order1 neutral or Order 3 Luck 3 and reduced scales from elsewhere because the difference in gold from picking worse scales is vastly less important than skill. Hurting yourself by taking misf and winning anyways doesn't make it an optimal build.

RULES OF NATURE

this was a lot closer than the stats imply
>>
>>161463294
That's true, but it doesn't necessarily prove that any of those iterations would be better or worse for each game. I've won a game with T3L3 as well, but it seems most of my games I go with O3Mis2. Of course, I'd love to pick whatever is optimal for each situation, and I'm fine with picking something odd or unconventional here.
>>
>>161462827
>The reduced event chances from order effect is very, very minor compared to the event shift from Luck.
Event frequency reduction from order is -2% (whatever that means) per scale. Event frequency increase from luck is 5% (again, whatever that means) per scale.

Full Luck and Order scales is 9% event frequency increase, compared to 15% at Order0, and 24% at Turmoil3. Those are pretty big differences.

You could at best argue that event frequency % has an insignificant effect.

>Order always being coupled with misf is a meme from people that see the synergy and never bothered actually seeing how it affects your game.
Pretty sure that's mainly because Order is a very valuable scale and Misfortune is a fairly safe scale to dump. The synergy is nice, but I'd still take them together without the event reduction from Order. You likely see Misfortune/Growth often for the same reason.

So, the elves are now at war with TC and Eriu. Having attacked both of them. Anyone that borders them and isn't at war with them yet better take action, or else soon they'll eat another 2 or 3 caps and will be completely unstoppable.
>>
>>161463472
Yep. I like blood-hunting nations, generally, and O3 is a staple. Since I'm always hunting for more points in pretender design, Misfortune just seems a safe pick. So long as it's not Mis3 or Misfortune with Drain.
>>
>>161463537
Eriu was a misclick. And TC was dying to Rus and Machaka anyway. I just took what I could.
>>
>>161463430
I'm saying that O3L3 gives you a lot more dosh than O3/L0. A lot of a lot more. That's essentially it. The problem is that we don't have actual numbers for events over a large number of games and turns so I can't quantify it. The only testing that I know of was doing a few levels of misfortune and spamming end turn, which showed that O2/Misf 1 had more total money (just money, not counting events) than O3/Misf 2, but it was only one run. Given that it was just the capital, it should be even more dramatic with more provinces.

>>161463472
>The reduced event chances from order effect is very, very minor compared to the event shift from Luck.
By event shift I mean the shift in the value of events. The way that luck works is that there's a spectrum of uncommon good-common good-common bad-uncommon bad. Luck shifts it towards good, misf shifts it towards bad. This means that luck doesn't just mean more good events and fewer bad events, it means more better events and fewer worse events.

I'd prob go Luck1/Mag 2 or vice-versa since 1/1 unlocks some more events. You can also go sloth 1 or lower dom and then go 1/3 for even more gem events.
>>

>thank god this shit is finally over
Agreed.
Cataclysm is kind of a headache.
>>
>>161463829
I am. I think going sloth is a good idea, though I dislike that it lowers my income. Only disadvantage is there's multiple nations that dislike cold, and not going cold 3 makes me sad. But I don't want my poor snek to get all chilly.

>>161463605
>Given that it was just the capital, it should be even more dramatic with more provinces.
Anecdotal evidence (from me, few other people I asked) is that events get less influential as you get more provinces. While you seem to get more events with a large empire, it's not as large an increase as would be expected (i.e. 2x provinces gives less than 2x events)

Suggested reasons why event frequency doesn't seem to scale up linearly with provinces:
>Event frequency drops as turn count increases
>Event frequency is constant, more provinces just spreads out the area over which your events can occur
>Hard limit to number of events (unlikely imo, even in large games I very rarely hit more than 4-5 events in a turn)

This is obviously really hard to test (need to manually gather data from a large number of test games), and I haven't yet gotten around to doing so.

>By event shift I mean the shift in the value of events.
Right, I see. I thought you meant the event chance changes.

I only played 1 Cataclysm MP game before, and for the last one I used some shitty rainbow. Lesson learned. I picked a strong multifunctional bless and good scales (misfortune 2 is manageable, so I often use it in my games) and hoped to get sacreds ASAP and don't get removed by awake expanders. I bet like 600 gold on UW mercs to get the much needed income for capital heavy cav, and it helped me a lot.

I found Oiorpatas near my capital on turn 14 or so, so I had almost no advantage early. Then I met Pink who had Troll Seithberenders (look em up, they're really strong)/Ktonian Reanimators, so I knew that he had to go before he can skelespam effectively. Then there was a second sacred province with Aphroi on the throne to the south of my cap. 28hp aphroi with E9N9 are great against usual Cataclysm shit, so I never stopped making them.
>>
>>161463973
Yeah, a massive research bonus is way more important than events in my opinion. Assuming your mage group is primarily those S1 mages, it gives a 42% increase to your research.

Go for the sloth1/luck1 the other guy suggested and you get a decent number of events as well.

Skrattis really won me this game though. I would never win that quickly without them (I would've used golem thugs anyway, but early skrattis were just too handy). After finishing off Pink I made a NAP with Grey, hoping that I could kill White faster than him. Luckily, White only made chaff and couldn't do much in terms of late-game spells/thugs. He killed 2 or 3 of my thugs with petrification (a lot of Pans and E9 pretender have some uses), but I could just jump my dudes on his forts without worrying.

My expansion went very well, but this was my first Cataclysm game and I've only had a couple of Dominions games before this, so I didn't exactly know what I was doing. If I had been more proactive about figuring out how to use all my resources, things might have gone differently.

Still, I had fun, and it was a good learning experience. One of the better games I've been in, though maybe I'm biased because I did pretty well until Green and Aquamarine teamed up against me.

Literally every single graph sans army size points to either Ulm winning, or being neck and neck with me . . . most in the former category.

I guess the feeling here is that Hinnom is a vastly better nation than Ulm . . . but I'm not seeing it. Sure, Hinnom's endgame is the best aspect about Hinnom - but that's mostly because the other stages of Hinnom's game are uttershit.

Ulm has all 9s (or is extremely close), Tart factories, a percent reduction site he elected to move his Monolith to, income vastly higher than anyone else's (with actual good fucking units to spend it on), and gem income that was competitive to mine before he attacked Vanheim. Also, full magic diversity - but then I have that too for the most part.

I should also note that, upon looking at the mid-EU provinces, I finally found where the income discrepancy was coming from - Euro provinces just have more people period. Even accounting for bloodhunting, I never had 22k pop provinces that *weren't* a capital of some sort.

Hinnom's end game doesn't need to be *good* to be the best part about them.
They lack recruitable hunters that can be realistically used, have solidly meh recruit unit killiness, if that, se'ir are meh without a bless - and Hinnom cannot really afford a bless on Archaea (no nation that lacks good sacred recruitable units can . . except Xibalba). I've never tried Sheds, but I can't imagine they'd be more efficient than storm demons.

Insofar as recruitable mages go the situation isn't that good either, sans Melqarts - but they're generally less efficient than Vanjarls in the endgame since neither can realistically deal with *any* amount of mage backup, relegating both to thug status.

The Grigori are nice, but their presence is less apparent on a map this size, given their unique status.

I'd actually put Ulm slightly ahead of Hinnom in endgame - though I should note that strictly speaking neither of us are at 'end' game. In Ulm's case he only possesses a middling blood eco. In my case my research is far off from max. But with those equalized, nice as the Grigori are, I'd put the ability to recruit amazing dual wielding infantry just slightly higher.
>>

>>
>>161488313

I've had people do that to other players in games I've been in.

>>
>>161485968
>Guys I'm already leading the game, haven't entered the strongest phase of my nation yet, so please attack the early scales nation because they had good research.
>>
>>161488313
First, good as the Grigori are, correct paths Tarts are better for being SCs. HP is the relevant issue, and Grigori just don't have high enough values. And yes, I did say that the 6 Grigori were Hinnom's main endgame power - 6 on a map of 400+ provinces. As for the S/B, E/B, and F/B casters - my advice is to actually play Hinnom and try to manage the logistics of *using* those casters, moving them around . . and still having provinces to blood hunt. The only reason Hinnom isn't the most frustrating nation I've ever played is because I've played LA R'lyeh.

>full blood economy
That is required for endgame, yes. Ulm's already in blood, he'll have a full scale eco going if unharassed by the time I finish researching.

From what I've seen of Demon Cleansing, resistance definitely comes before protection.

5 fire resistance is enough to block 5 fire damage even under demon cleansing, but a demon without fire resistance would treat that 5 fire damage as 10 damage for the protection roll.

Just go for double charcoal shield. Fire brand only removes one square of skeletons, fire shield can remove as many skeletons as can attack you.

Trample can work. They'll usually trample along right through the skeleton hordes to the back lines where the mages are.

It might also be countered by putting chaff on the back line, though, and you need a pretty tough thug to survive all those skeletons.

I think you'd be better served with a SC, using firestorm or some other battlefield clear.

What's the best way to begin blood hunting, for a weak or non blood nation. Just grab a bunch of flyers and start bloodhunting? You want someone with some blood to do it right?
>>
>>161524689
>no blood
Take 6-12 cheap commanders, start hunting a 5-6k province. Get enough slaves to empower a commander into blood, and use the empowered commander to continue blood hunting as a weak blood nation. You can keep your cheap commanders hunting too, but their success rate will be abysmal.

Another way is Lamia queens, which have an ~50% chance at blood. They're expensive and hard to summon, but might be worth it to give yourself a good start into blood.

>weak blood
You have two choices.

The first option is you can do it the same as strong blood nations; stack a group (I would not recommend more than 8 B1 with SDR) of blood mages in a single province (until it falls significantly below 5k). This has the least effect on income, and lets you defend your expensive investment of empowered/rare blood mages more easily. Downside is slightly less slaves, as unrest builds up and can cause subsequent checks to fail.

The second option is to spread your blood hunters around. This hurts your income a lot more, and makes it harder to patrol and defend your investment. On the plus side, it results in a larger number of slaves if you patrol every province well.

With the slaves you get you can either empower more commanders to bloodhunt or summon blood mages. If you have access to summoned commanders with blood magic (only generic one is the vampire lord, needing D4B3 to summon), you will almost always want to use those. Empowering commanders should only be a last resort in the event you cannot reach summoned blood mages.
>>
>>161525669

Does the blood mage require troops to blood hunt? Will it be more effective if it has fliers, like patrolling is?

He does not need to lead troops himself, but it is important to have a separate commander with troops patrolling the province to keep unrest from building up. Fliers will remove unrest better, so they are good choices for the patrolling force.

If you're really paranoid you could give the blood mage a small (5 at most) group of bodyguards (units set to guard commander and led by him) to protect against assassinations. That has no effect on blood hunting - it's just to reduce the chance of events or an enemy player killing him.
>>
>>161526262

For whatever reason I was always under the impression that the blood mage himself needed to have troops under his command to find slaves. But I must have just mixed that up with the presence of patrols in provinces then.
>>
>>161526375
>But I must have just mixed that up with the presence of patrols in provinces then.
That's likely, since I haven't heard of troops affecting blood hunting before.
>>
>>161526539

And its not good to blood hunt in farmland/capital provinces?
>>
>>161527168
Province type doesn't necessarily matter, but the way unrest reduction works, is that income is calculated before patrollers reduce unrest, so if you blood hunt your high income provinces you take a bigger income hit.
>>
Should I bother with vanilla or start using summod right now?
>>
>>161527168
Hunting higher population provinces (as long as they're all over 5k) hurts your income more without giving more slaves.
>>
>>161527328
I'd say vanilla, but I'm biased against summod.

Summod doesn't change much for most nations, but I think you'd be better of learning the base game and then learning how summod changes that, rather than vice versa.

Also, summod has the occasional gamebreaking bug.

Pretender: T3S3(h/c3)G3L3M3 are your scales at the very least. Prefer cold over heat, personally. Dom strength isn't super important for a couple of reasons, namely cheap temples, trash scales, black centaurs being cap only, black centaurs being expensive-ish for a nation with trash scales, and the whole domkill diplomacy factor.

Take at least a W9 bless, and you can expand like a fucking genius with black centaurs/undead black centaurs. W9N9 is fun. W9E9 is too. W9D9 isn't worth the D9.

recruit harpy scouts from any forest you can to scout. Get a not!pan early for summoning some of your carrion lord bullshit.

keep in mind you only have palisades, but a shitton of d and n mages, so chaff shouldn't be an issue.

friendly reminder that any province with a lab and a palisade can get an H3 through summoning. worth knowing for throne capping.

No, MA Agartha is a counter because it can murder infinite skeletons with infinite statues and since statue>skeleton it can come out ahead. Plus EQ of course.

>>161521260
Continuing on, problem with my game is i have a whole row of forts to push through and between attack turn disadvantage and lack of access to good magic damage battle globals, and the need to diversify tactics to keep the enemy guessing im a bit at a loss of solid ways to deal with hordes of skellys with Fog Warriors turn 1 protection. If it was fleshy bits running around i'd be happy with soul vortex and going ham, but that doesn't work against undead.

Trample is an idea but again like flying with attack rear, I'm not of the impression that trample will lead the thug to mages if mages are scripted to be in the front/middle.

Playing as fomoria to help with better answers, Fomorian Kings have easy a3+d2/d3 for spell access so their battle globals as SCs seem weak vs undead. Wrathful Skies seems entirely unimpressive.
>>
>>161541326
Great post with good pointers, but where im struggling most is trying to figure out what nation's research focus would be for mid/late game. Mother Oak(and other nature globals)/horde of skellies are the only things that jump out to me about his nation. for research focal points. And none of that really helps in mid/late game when you need big magic to win battles or you'll die to earthquake spam.
>>
>>161559514
I had a shitton of temples. I think my Dominion score was 6?
>>
>>161560180
Wrathful Skies with Storm is decent. It doesn't hit that many targets per turn, but makes up for it by being very hard to protect against.

If you're confident you can make a SC which can survive indefinite skellyspam, one thing you can do is send a nature mage and make your SC berserk. Berserk units will continue fighting past normal autorout and trigger enemy autorout, even as the attacker. That won't kill the skellyspammers (unless you cut off retreats) but it will take the province/fort.

Beserking is a good idea that I wasn't thinking of. Whats going to happen when a beserker is attacking a fort? I was under the impression if a battle goes to 50 rounds the attack loses, but you're saying the opposite happens if the attacker has a beserker?

Also what happens to the defender's stuff? You're saying the defenders would escape the fort but in my lost fort defences the units went poof after they routed off the map(lost a good thugged King this way :( ) so I'm under the impression that lost fort battle with routed troops = dead troops.
>>
>>161568214
You'll only lose to turn limits as an attacker with an unkillable berserker if the defender also has an unkillable berseker if I remember right.
So, just keep him alive for a while and you'll win by causing the enemy to autorout .
Also, defenders routing out of a fort will go to adjacent provinces, so they can just run into enemy provinces and die.
>>
>>161568589
>Also, defenders routing out of a fort will go to adjacent provinces, so they can just run into enemy provinces and die.
Are you sure? He means when a fort is stormed
>>
>>161568756
I was going to check the manual but it doesn't have that information
Probably best to assume that all the defenders die, in that case. The problem is that the only time I've seen berserking attackers win in that fashion was when all the other provinces around the fort were taken too.
>>
>>161568756

Fort interiors only have one province connection: Fort exteriors.

If you win, and he has stormed with everything and has noone maintaining siege, your routees will be in the fort.

Otherwise they die.
>>
>>161569393
I know that attackers retreat to adjacent provinces only never the fort exterior even when you leave someone there to keep the siege, and units are lost to rout if there's no adjacent provinces.
>>
>>161569393
alright so forcing a route either through survivng 50 turns on a berserker or a general route will cause the defenders to go poof, thats good

>>161574482
I mean, for figuring out the basics of the game like interface and what spells even DO you can play SP. You're right that the actual strategies outside of expansion are different, but if the dude is losing to normal AIs, he still has enough to learn that he can still get a fair bit out of SP before learning more losing MP games.
>>
>>161574424
>>161574482
I know I know.. Where can find games though? I was told there would be an endless stream of noob games here but there is none to be found. What is PD and expansions? And what guides?
>>
>>161575301
PD is Province Defense. You purchase it in individual provinces (Should be in the top-left corner of the screen). It gives you some units that replenish after each battle, but can never leave the province. Always get at least 1 PD, or you'll be conquered by scouts.

Expansion is the early-game, when you're sending out armies to take territory. Try to get a second fort online around the end of the first year, and you'll be good.

Check out Steam, they have newb games frequently.
>>
>>161571953
Always put gems on commanders under misforune drain
>>
>>161575301

Expansion is, generally speaking, the first year. But that can vary based on map settings. Basically it's however long you can be expected to be taking provinces from non-throne indies, rather than other players.
>>
>>161575301

Steam usually has a lot of newbie games, but I honestly recommend just plunging into the deep end here. Play SP until you can beat the AI then come into an online game, doesn't matter as long as its not a "non-scrubs only" game. Ask questions and learn strats.

One issue is that a lot of the other common mythologies have been so genericized that they were added into the common nation stuff in Dominions. Like the djinn.

And then you've got the opposite of that where summoning bears is a very nation specific spell, including MA Ermor for some reason.

ForAFistfulOfDeathGems ended. The game had been mostly over for a while now, but the throne settings made it take a while to actually close out. I actually managed to take every province (if not breach every fort) before finishing claiming all the thrones, and that was with two priest level artifacts.

Graphs are kinda lopsided as a result of the game dragging on after having been effectively over for a while. The only thing I think that was really noteworthy was that I had pretty crazy research for MA Pan (I was on par with Arco even when he had notably more forts) on account of having a bunch of good indy mages. I'll do a quick overview of the game in a new post.

So I ran a bog-standard W9 bless with very good money scales. Naturally, my expansion was pretty good. I was only just behind Caelum, which ran prod 3 and an awake expander. Surprisingly, Jotunheim was also about as big (maybe even bigger), and actually managed to grow larger after year 1 ended on account of his neighbors all expanding away from him or just expanding very poorly.

Late year 1 / start of year 2, I saw that Shinu had built O-bakemono on purpose, so I took his capital and land. In doing so, I acquired three lizard shaman provinces. After this, I knew that the major powers were Caelum and Jotunheim. Caelum randomly went AI in spite of toppest-tier expansion, and got subbed out. They might have even gotten subbed twice; it's been a while. Anyways, I talked Caelum into helping me invade Jotunheim to prevent them from going full demon mode. We did it; it worked. Jotunheim took a while to properly die thanks to heavy thug use and vaetti tricks, but Caelum and I both took his land fairly quickly.

Meanwhile, Arco ate Bandar Log. There were some battles.

Ermor tripped and broke all of his bones and his neighbors took his insurance money. Agartha ended up with his cap and Nazca got to a decent size. I was really scared of a big Nazca, so I asked his neighbors to fight him and they did, which was nice of them. Agartha took a few provinces, Arco took most of them and became ginormous with oodles of forts.

I had sent in some sneaky centaurs to help fight Nazca that ended up being totally unnecessary and they got caught by Arco PD on their way out and took the province. I had been planning on invading Arco soon at this point anyways, so I went and did that. While sitting on Jotun's cap, I had been steadily building up my blood and magic and so on, so while I was on par with Arco in research, I was well ahead in resources, so I won our fights pretty handily.

>>
>Marverni the literal forest druid nation doesn't get Irminsul

Explain this
>>
>>161605953
Caelum ate Agartha while I was eating Arco.

Ys, TC, and Abysia just kinda didn't do much.

When Arco was mostly dead, Caelum pointed out that the two of us should fight, and I agreed so I attacked him with whatever I had that neighbored him or could teleport in range. My magic/blood advantage by this point was pretty enormous, so it was a pretty one sided fight.

After that, I just kinda conquered everyone else while taking thrones.
>>
>>161606065

Because Marveni is a nation based on Celtic folklore. Irminsul is out of nordic folklore, so only the nordic themed nations get it.

I was Caelum in the game, the second substitute. It was my first game of Dom4 in a long while, since the release. Pan helped me out a lot and taught me a bunch of good tricks. Though we both knew we'd have to fight eventually, he'd gotten a much higher lead than me at that point considering he'd even bootstrapped into Blood Economy.

Speaking of EA Ulm, what's the deal with this nation in general? Use the billion stealthy warriors?
Are Shield Maidens important to recruit? None of these niggas use shields

MORE STEEL MAIDENS
ALWAYS MORE
>>
>>161605953
>>161606245
Hey, congrats on your win.
I might have gotten quite big, but my income was honestly pretty bad, due to Ermor's dominion, clustered wastes on the west and thrones/cap occupying farm provinces. Also, I regret taking misfortune IRL, since I only got like 4 S1 vaetti hags. Not that it matters much, though; I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to defend against both you and burds at that point anyway.
Oh, and sorry for AI'ing when you finally breached my cap fort; Civ6 came out around that time and since I was dead anyway, AI was probably better than me sending late turns/staling like I did in some other games.
>>
>>161643305

Your regular warriors aren't bad, those throwing axes will hit the frontline of the enemy like a truck. But Steel maidens are pretty baller.
>>
>>161643305
Yeah. Ulm should use their stealth.
Steel maidens are melee monsters.
Mountain/Forest warriors are good if you need damage and don't care about stealth or defense.

Regular warriors are really cheap stealthy dual wielders.

I prefer the ones with axes, but they are horribly inaccurate and generally worse in melee.

You get masses of cheap mages. Figure out how to use them. Focus on buffs and debuffs, with some magmacasters thrown in. Useless smiths go wherever you want to produce troops.

Cheap items can supplement your forces. People will laugh, but I have warrior chiefs with 30+ kills, and have even had them drop enemy thugs with the correct kit. Holy scourge+strength boots+burning pearl+acorn amulet that gives luck=8 gems, and can drop a kitted dai oni while mixed with chaff, especially if he gets additional buffs from a nearby Smith. Cheap bows can also add firepower, etc, etc, etc.

Recruitment shield maidens as decoys only.
>>
Would anyone be interested in subbing and trying out a late game, magic enhanced EA Arco ?

I'm in no victory position, but I got 3 globals up. It's not like I can't continue playing or do my turns or anything, but I joined too many games and real life started hitting me all of sudden, and it just feels like I'm half-assing my turns and not making proper use of everything I have. Overall it's a big waste.
>>
Trying out arena builds. Turns out if you give a prophet a skull talisman and tell him to cast spells he'll just spam smite over and over which is obviously a much worse idea.

Spell exclusion fucking when.

People who have driven a casino (that they own) into bankruptcy probably should not be trusted on matters of economy. Other people's casinos would be fine though.

>>

No? Where was that hosted?
>>

Honestly, I'm pessimistic about your chances of finding a sub, since Fomoria was in an even stronger position with even more toys what with his deep blood access and all, and I wasn't able to find a sub for him in spite of 10 days of advertising
>>
>>161657702
Well it was worth a try. Thought maybe someone doesn't like Fomoria but would be interested in seeing Arco's ME spells.

Steam forums/discord. I am pretty sure R'lyeh asking for advice earlier is from that game.

>>161665259
What mythology / fantasy tropes do you like?
>>
>>161665364
I'd say Japanese/Chinese mythology.
>>
>>161665435
Not him but there are 2 nations that are literally japan and china
Aka Tien Chi (all ages, never played them so can't say what they got going on for them) and Yomi/Shinuyama/Jomon (EA/MA/LA, EA Yomi is about Oni ruling over the Bakemono goblins, MA Shinuyama is about Bakemono overthrowing Onis and then ruling over humans, and LA Jomon is about humans overthrowing the Bakemono and becoming full Japan mode)
>>
>>161665435
EA TC is super wushu swordmasters and masters of the elements, alongside various celestial beings
EA Yomi is hordes of onis and their slaves, with dai oni actually working as monstrous supercombatants that take on unprepared enemy armies.
MA TC is bureaucratic, with lots of regular soldiers and mages that commune together to drop meteors, buff up the troops, and use celestial magic
MA Shinuyama is goblin bakemono, with some larger, ogrish soldiers, ancient shamans, and summoned oni from the past age.
LA TC is mongol horsemen and spirit mages, with subjugated celestial masters with reduced power.
LA Jomon is human daimyos and their samurai soldiers, supported by shugenjas and the like on land, while from the seas they can get dragon kings and their shark soldiers
>>
>>161665730
>>161665832
That sounds really interesting, thanks. I'll try LA Jomon.

What's wrong with Los Angeles? Do you hate Lost Angels?
>>
Dumbass bird AI is trying to step to me.
>>
>>161666448
Actually that's me right there, I try to enjoy LA but in many cases it's "humans had to ally/fight X magic ancient race and won/are winning/serve them" and humans are BORING. I like crossbows and heavy armor n shit but goddamn man it's humans everywhere
EA is what I enjoy most so far, and MA is a nice balance of both in this sense
>>
MA is my favorite just because it has it all but I don't mind EA either.

LA is terrible though.
>>
If you seduce a mercenary commander in another player's employ, do you get him for keeps?
>>
>>161666656

I'm really digging LA Ulm so far even though I normally play the monster races. Sure you waste a few turns setting up Unlimited Wolf Works but it really helps for bloodhunting.

Yes, but not his crew
>>
>>161667536
The AI, in spite of many thousands of games of experience, remains bad enough that it is allowed into all games.

>>161667976
No, actually, he just needs them to be nearby. This is actually a Thing for Abysia (since the heat aura on their mages will kill the slaves) where you put them on scouts and position the scouts in the vicinity of the blood mages but not right on top of them
>>
Bob Agartha, are you here? Not even need to come to steamchat, but it would make it easier.
