Never got this meme. The Western scene isn't really dying as much as it's stabilizing. MG/Sekai saw yuuge turn-out on their initial Steam titles, but that's because it was a new thing and the novelty was still there. The Steam audience has died down considerably and you're mostly left with the core audience and their expectations; no episodic crap, no super-short meme titles, and a bias towards adult content. Whereas MG never really lost that audience--Sekai certainly did (if they ever had it). This is seen from their remarkably poor showing on nearly all of their new titles in recent memory (mostly caused by their over-inflation of the market with garbage OELVNs, cheap episodic crap, and a general tendency to over-price their bigger titles in spite of cut content).

I think the market is largely just calming down. You did see some surprising successes this year, though. Kindred Spirits sold very nicely (though I suppose it was set as a 18+ visual novel on Steam, so it did get free marketing in that regard).

I personally think Rance might end up being the next big thing sales-wise, and most certainly will probably end up being MG's best seller period. Haruka sold extremely well--well enough for Alicesoft to comment on it even, and most people seemed to begrudgingly purchase it just so they could get Rance. Plus, it's an established name within the community and it doesn't need additional exposure like some of the more niche titles being put out. I expect Rance to move many more units.

If anything it's the other way around. Teenagers are often embarrassed by sex (despite their sex drive) and complain about things with overt sex or fanservice being "creepy" or "stupid" because they don't know how to react to it, at least in the West. That's why so many people who initially get into anime hate fanservice, but eventually they get used to it or even request it, so they no longer feel embarrassment about it. Teenagers are also the ones that cry about sex scenes, probably because they can't play eroge when their parents are around. It just seems difficult for younger folks to accept that sexuality is part of life, since they haven't been exposed to it much.
