First playthrough I guess. I sugest playing blind. Upgrade your favorite weapon to at least to +6. Use the gems you find, there's no need to do dungeons when you're not PvPing or cooping. Level VIT when you think you're taking too much damage. Bring strength to 50 or so.

Yeah first playthrough I took hunters axe and it's done by me fairly well. I'm probably more a soulsfag in regards to END as I prefer mobility and generally can dodge most attacks eventually even if it takes a few encounters to learn attacks of something. I've only had a few area's which I'd say damage was total horse shit like late game with my VIT I'm having difficulties as one hit does 500+ damage in one go and this is normal, the nightmare zone I'm on the second one is a sack of shit. My hunters axe is 9+ by the way and I can keep leveling strength. I actually ran out of blood vials so I need to go farm those a bit more. I'm still figuring things out but have been piecing together the story of the game myself but unsure about specific things still. I may buy the DLC and go for that before I complete the game but I doubt I'm that far yet.

If you're at Nightmare of Mensis you're almost finished. Go see areas you didn't explore yet or just keep doing it. The DLC is the most fun part of the game, if you do buy it, you're at the perfect time to start it but be aware it's hard as dicks. If you see fire don't wake up.

Shit I knew it, I just had some feeling I was already done I finished this game faster than Demon's Souls and it's not as long as Dark Souls 1 was. The gems are labelled. Just look for what you need. In your case, heavy abyssals, which are strength scaling gems. The website tells you the shape, the glyph, and the layer boss you need to farm.
Also, Ihyll is accessed after you finish Defiled Pthumeru. You also need to have made an FRC dungeon before being able to enter that glyph, so make an FRC Loran/Isz, preferably Isz to farm your 27.2% gems from the Watchers.

You'll get the hang of it all. Kinda confusing at first.

Yep, basically you farm specific bosses in the FRC dungeons. HBLB for Heavy Abyssals, Elder for Cold Abyssals, etc.
Your Hunter's Axe should be fine. You'll pick up good gems along the way to improve, and be able to farm for the best once you access the glyphs. Non-Layer 1 bosses are usually savescummed, though.

1 HA and (2)27.2% gems works best. You get an AR of 629 + 15 (assuming a +15 secondary) = 644.
Pretty cool that you also get the same AR with (2)HAs and a single 27.2%, assuming the abyssals have +15 secondaries.
1 HA is best, though, because 629 > 614 as modified damage. With 2 HA, that extra 30 is only flat damage.

Try going into the general face options (top-most tab IIRC) and making the face slightly more, "convex" I think is word they use.

Also, for the eyes, moving them farther apart/closer together changes their In/Out orientation. If you want down-turned/up-turned eyes, or to move them laterally without changing their shape, you have to move them incrementally laterally, then in or out, then laterally, then in or out, etc.

The preset Lower Pthumuru has farmable 20.3% gems, Lower Hintertomb has 16.5% +14 flat.

In root lower Pthumeru there are Brainsuckers, who should drop Arcane gems, they will be shit, but there's no where else to farm them until Isz Chalice's. And some root dungeons have good gems in chests, like an 18% Fire Radial (next best you can get is 16.5%).
