So in Cliffs of Dover there was these keybinds for basically set FOV's. One zoomed you in, other zoomed you out, and the third was in the middle.

Is there anyway to set something like this up in DCS?

Like if I pressed one button I'd snap to a zoomed in view, and if I pressed another I'd snap to zoomed out, and one for the middle.

I dunno, the spirit of /simg/ is more about simulations of actual things so that you can really let the autism flow. Space games don't really fit in, even the ones like Artemis. Evochron straddles the line, but it along with Freelancer & Freespace would probably merge better with the Elite/StarCitzen thread to make it Space Fighters General.

Il-2 Sale on lads

>As the weather gets colder, Sturmovik is heating up! We head into yet another Holiday season together flying wingtip to wingtip. The game has been updated to version 2.005 last week, the list of changes and additions is available here. Development of our Battle of Kuban project is in full swing and new features for BoS and BoM are also coming soon like DirectX 11 along with other improvements. We’ll also be releasing our first Early-Access airplane for Kuban in December - the Bf-109 G-4. We also just released the Yak-1b and the Ju-52 is also coming in December. The Sturmovik Team never
stops working to make our products great for you!

>To celebrate the beginning to the Holiday Season we have launched our traditional Black Friday sale on our website and on Steam. Battle of Stalingrad, La-5 and Fw-190 Collector Planes are 50% Off. And for the very first time Battle of Moscow is on sale at 33% Off! The P-40 and Mc.202 are also on sale
with 15% off.

>space sim
I'd like to take the opportunity to interject for a moment and express my slight triggering. I absolutely agree that ED and SC don't belong here. That out of the way, suggest people quit calling those space games space sims. That's like calling Ace Combat a flight sim. WW2 planes in space is bullshit, not simulation.
>Space games
Elite Visionous, Scam Citizen
>Space Simulators
Orbiter, Rogue System (basically DCS in space), hell even KSP with RSS and some other mods qualifies better thanks to at very least having orbital mechanics.

Since they're extremely niche, proper space sims used to live under KSP general, but since that general died, /simg/ is the next logical place to have them.

Orbiter and Rogue System qualify as proper autism approved vehicle simulators. Addition to OP as welcome games when?
>>
>>160990813
Wouldn't need to be floating. I meant to just replace the Zeppelins with Carriers and do some piracy missions that way.

>Jet Aircraft - New flight model
Balancing and tweaking jet physics is hard work. That's why we decided to implement a new flight model to our jet aircraft that will allow us to better tweak them to their real life counterparts as well as introduce new features to them in the future. We hope this will bring more balance and fun to flight. Thanks to The Falklands Expansion there will be many new aircraft with new bombs, rockets and missiles to use with them as well!

I'll host BMS again when everyone agrees that a mission is from cold and dark to and including exiting the runway on touching down. Taxiing all the way to the parking spot I don't care for, but the above I want in ops, else this is a more casual version of 104th.

It doesn't matter if you are the most skill DCS mission maker in the world, DCS simply can not have a convincing ground war like BMS offers. I am a DCS fag but this is the truth. I've played less than an hour of BMS but just looking in the distance and seeing fights in cities that aren't even part of your objective blew me away.
>>
>>161037068
I never had problems with the start procedures. A major problem I had with BMS was it's abysmal keybinding system that totally fucks up with each new release of a patch.

Also you always wanted to play the Israeli theater, of which I have zero care for.
>>
>>161045094

>abysmal keybinding system
>press the key, then press the key you now want it to be

I'm legitimately, honestly surprised that you fucking brain dead mongoloids are even able to launch the game in the first place.

The keybinds are better than fucking DCS, where at times you have to press the button 200 times before the game finally registers it and lets you change.
>>
>>161044945
>I've played less than an hour of BMS but just looking in the distance and seeing fights in cities that aren't even part of your objective blew me away.

So in other words, you've never actually used the mission editor before, and/or never had the forsight to model outlying battles.

The flight modeling is quite nice, the graphics are pretty, the sound design is nuts, it runs decently on my toaster, and the maps are nice and big, but the selection seems a bit limited for aircraft and the lack of interactive cockpits is a bit of a bummer. >>
>>161055585
I dont think you understand, prop planes, in general, do not behave in real life, or in better sims like DCS, like how they do in IL2. There's an ever present it-almost-feels-like-Im-flying-in-zeroG-floaty-space feel to IL2, that and a 'disconnected' feel from you having direct control over the plane. Not in a spin mind you, but just in basic coordinated stick and rudder turning. Like you're flying on ice.
>>
>>161051864
Ok looks like we do have some sim love left in here.

Next I'd suggest we decide on a theater and a campaign and by extension, a plane as well. Then we can build a campaign around those things. I'd actually like to finish one of those at some point.

Vote for theater: https://www.strawpoll.me/11727941
>>
>>161056050
But I fly shitplanes IRL anon. It's stable sure but it requires input regardless.

I've not flown IL2 in a while like I said but it doesn't feel that off and not too floaty in regular coordinated turns. That said there is a massive difference between flying a Dora or Kurfürst in DCS to flying an early Anton or Gustav in BoS or even anything most of us will ever fly.

I'll have to compare when I have time I guess.

Lets make some autism and sim related discussion: which flight sims you think had the best FM for WW1, WW2 and Jet era? not in general but for specific aircrafts.

How good are the FM of IL2 BoS and Rise of Flight?

Somewhat contentious, but easily better than 1946. Probably better than CLoD too unless TFmod made any changed to the FM.

I've only started seeing it crop up in more recent titles. I never saw it in any IL-2 1946 official paintschemes, for exmaple - those got rid of the Swastika all together.

If I remember right, Combat Flight Simulator (the FS-98 derived one) put the regular cross on the tail instead of a swastika.
>>
>>161071670
Sometimes it's just the cross and sometimes it's the outer lines of the swastika.

Ah, I thought you meant in BoS specifically.

desu If it *has* to be censored I prefer the no swastika approach.

Four hours of checklists and clickable cockpit just to get to launch. Another hour and a half of them after launch and then silence till TLI, then perform mundane tasks for literally a few days while you fly around the moon. Then some more retardedly in depth checklists and then it's time for re-entry and splashdown. It's awfully complex.

The vast majority of mods sadly don't go into the same amount of detail. The next best that I can think of would be Igel's R-7s, Molniya's, Vostoks, and R-9s because you can change flight parameters. Another would be the Delta IVs cause you can change flight parameters and payloads on the fly.

So I'm thinking about picking up the Mig-21 for DCS, two questions:

Is there a lot of info on how to fly it in DCS, and are they provided by the game or do I gotta look around for it?

How does multiplayer work with teams? Can I fly on either side with the Mig-21, or am I stuck facing off against NATO fighters always?

What exactly do you mean by "How to fly it"?

The tutorials are there, they teach you how turn it on, how to operate the aircraft, etc. Plus there's enough documentation on the internet to understand how the systems work. Also pretty much all slavaboos who fly in /simg/ are proficient enough to teach you a thing or two.

If you mean if there's some theory behind how to fly it, as in maneuvers and whatnot, this sort of thing is only 'properly' learned if you analyze the performance charts for the aircraft and have a good feel towards it and the envelope it's meant to fly in (FAST). But it's not hard and it's more general than aircraft specific, you should look for BFM and AFM instruction in this case.
>>
>>161119096
You sound like you've never played DCS before at all.

1. Map hotas properly
2. Learn how to fly and use weapons in single player on your own before ever going online
3. Go online

>>161123458

By go online, he means go on the 104th which will have every plane in the game on both sides, so have fun flying your MiG-21 against F-15's, Su-27's and Mirage 2000's.

>>161123458
Yeah, I haven't played DCS before, I wanted to make sure the game properly taught you how to actually fly the aircraft, told you what all the instruments were (and translated for us English only speakers), how to operate whatever systems it had.

My flightsim experience has been limited to WW2 and WW1 sims, without all the fancy radar, missiles, flares, chaff, etc. And even then, most of them have never properly taught things about the aircraft, I've always had to go to third party sources to find out ammo/weapon loadouts/characteristics, range, optimal altitude, what altitude to switch your supercharger at, etc. etc.

I didn't want to buy the Mig-21 and then find out that I have to go digging around for how to actually play with the damn thing.

The multiplayer question is because the only jet that currently interests me is the Mig-21, but I know my friends are going to want to fly F-15s and shit if they get the game, and I'd like to fly with them.
>>
>>161131889

Yeah no you'll still be hunting down third-party manuals for the MiG-21. It does ship with a proper, expansive manual, but it's very dense and written in that special kind of English that slavs speak when they speak English. That being said, you have stuff like Chuck's guides and a wealth of youtube tutorials that will get you up to speed in the Fishbed real quick. There is an English cockpit available in the MiG-21, though it doesn't translate a few things, and most of the gauges and shit are purely numerical anyway.

Multiplayer stuff is entirely up to the mission maker, and by extension the server host for choosing the mission. Aircraft slots are put in as part of the mission, and I believe there are nations on either side of the REDFOR/BLUFOR team structure that DCS has in the mission editor that have all aircraft available to them. So, conceivably, you could have P-51s flying up with Mirage 2000s. If you friends are just too westaboo to like the MiG, they could pick up the F-5, as it's pretty on-par with the MiG capabilities-wise.

F-5 isn't as pretty as the Mig-21, though I was considering picking it up eventually. I care more about how the plane looks than its capabilities.

I guess if it comes with a manual, and there are some youtube tutorials out there, that's good enough.

How many keybinds does DCS generally require? I played a shitload of IL-2, used almost all of the keys on the keyboard for something (and all 16 buttons on my flightstick), though I generally didn't need all of them always. I'd imagine it has roughly the same if not more keybinds to use?

You better get your bitch ass up off the street, nigga
You got five seconds to get your hating ass up outta here

but yeah uh you'll need a few keybinds, a lot of shit can just be done with the buttons in the cockpit though. Especially in the 21, I feel it's kind of cheesy to map things like the weapon select rotary switch (which is on the left side of the front "dash" in the cockpit) to your stick.

I've had a Kingston Cloud wired headset that's done right by me for the past 4 years, the headpiece has an flat metal band running through it that makes the LED tracker easy to clip on to and they're super comfy and light, they don't give me any pressure points like my old sets did. Sound output is balanced, the mic piece is detachable and it's clarity is really good. Depending on the type they use individual plugs for audio/mic or both functions shared in a 3.5mm so you may need a splitter for an amplifier/speaker set. If you're not used to the sound-deadening it can take some getting used to meter your voice.

Vague ish thought: Do you actually have to be smart to learn proper full-fidelity simulation and flying, or is it just a matter of having the dedication to learn it?

I ask because I took to the basics of flying in sims like a duck to water, but proper payware in FSX and IFR navigation has been somewhat illusive to me. (My recollection is that I can about get a DC-9 off the ground and fly it VFR to where I want to go, perhaps playing with the autopilot manually. Programming a proper flight-plan into a FMC and slaving the autopilot to it [more a MD-80 thing in any case], not so much.)

Guess I'm asking if I've already passed the hard part, or if I've done what most people do and stalled at actually getting beyond Cessna-flight tier proficiency.

It's not a good question. Maybe more a starting point for other people to talk about how much they know. There're obviously lots of problems in even trying to ask what I'm getting at (as for example, aircraft systems may well just be "Well, study the location of the buttons then press them when the checklist says so", but navigation may require a sharp mind.) so I don't really know.

I dunno. I guess on some level I have to wonder if I'm just too dumb for big jets, or if that's just an excuse for me to avoid learning how to fly them properly. Maybe I'm angling for someone to say "I'm dumb as shit and I managed" as a confidence booster.

You've got to step. Start with the smaller planes and teach yourself the basics and steadily work your way through steadily larger and more complex aeroplanes. In DCS the Mirage used to baffle me and then I taught myself all the basic fast jet skills in the F-5. Then it was simply a case of reading the manual and applying what I had learned.
>>
So in DCS, most planes kick into afterburner when my throttle is at like 60%.

What would I change about the axis to make afterburner closer to 100% throttle?
>>
>>161174410
How does the game run this smooth for you in MP?
>>
>>161185113
It does for me too. I don't get super high frames, but they are pretty consistent around 50-60.
>>
>>161183975

You'd have to add a curve to your throttle axis but then you'd get a non-linear throttle response.

The AB //should// be kicking in around there, though. You push into AB, and then you should have enough throttle travel left to control what stage of AB you're in (in aircraft with multiple stages, like the F-15), and just in general how much fuel is going to your engines in AB.

>>

>>
>>161187470
What settings are you at? I get 60 with a maximum of 10 or so planes on screen in SP, never seen it happen on MP unless perhaps I'm very far away from stuff.
>>
>>161178306
More of a dedication thing really. Flying is basically mastering a fuck ton of things that are relatively simple on their own but appear horrendously complex when viewed as a whole. I find it really easy to learn things that are fun or interesting but other things I find difficult mostly because I can't be bothered. For example I really like radio navigation and IFR in the A-10C (and other aircraft) but although I understand the basics of the CDU, I just can't be arsed to really get stuck into it.

The obligatory fidelity, it flies significantly differently to any other plane in DCS both in flight-model and how it 'feels'. Because of it's flight characteristics and its 3rd-gen systems it's much harder to use effectively but incredibly rewarding to do so. It does both A2A and A2G and I like the selection of weapons you can use.

The Mig-21 in DCS is perfect for single missions, campaign, and ops with da boys. It's older systems disadvantage it for air-quake but air-quake is for faggots.

To be brutally honest, there are people that are hired to fly aircraft that never go on to be checked to line, and that can quite often be through their inability to manage the FMS or other systems, so there are people that are just not proficient in those areas. That being said, usually the decision to fail someone on a check to line comes down to whether or not it's financially viable to keep throwing training and extra chances at them; a home sim user has the luxury of spending as much or as little time as they like trying to master systems.

tl;dr - Yeah there are people that just can't. You're probably not one of them. Practise more.

Purely this. It's just a lot of memorization and knowing what the lingo means. Personally, I think the stick and rudder part of flying is the easiest because it's intuitive and straightforward. Like driving a car. When it comes to systems and modern day weapons it just comes down to having an understanding of how they work and how to use them. It's like learning to use a or fancy tool or any other piece of equipment.

I couldn't tell you about big civil jets from firsthand experience, but I assume it's the same thing, just more navigation focused and less bomb-dropping.

I was just talking about this actually.

Its totally a self justification for flying babby cliffs, but the MiG-29 as FC3 doesn't bother me too much.

Reason being, the MiG-29 is so stupid simple as a plane IRL, that I honestly don't feel as though I'm missing out on very much when I fly it.

MiG-29 just doesn't have that many systems.

When I look around the cockpit in the F-15 and Su-27, it honestly feels bad to be flying them as FC3 airplane. Especially the Su-27. The Flanker cockpit looks so complex, and has so much cool shit in it.

All I honestly want is the S model to get updated, and then the fucking PFM. Once the PFM comes out I'll be happy.

It's not the systems that make it a babby plane, but it still using sfm. There's a famous pilot comparison from a US F-16 pilot who flew a Fulcrum and lauded about how archaic and pilot intensive it is to control, fine adjustments in flight are nigh impossible and lining up accurate gun shots were a chore according to him.

no.

The SFM is cucking the plane hard core right now. It can't turn for shit, and just feels awful flying it all the time.

The MiG-29 flies like a beast. Its nimble and sturdy. Right now its a bouncy piece of shit.

FYI everyone said that once the Su-27 gets PFM its going to be way worse, when in fact it got 100 times better.

I can't wait to merge with faggots once the PFM comes out and shlem the fuck out of every nerd.

it was a deliberate design choice, F-16 fly at 1G automagically and stick position is mapped directly to Gs pulled

Fulcrum pitch is mapped like an "ordinary" plane where AoA is dynamic and related to speed

An SU-27 is not a MiG-29. The Fulcrum is 3rd gen fighter that flies on a practical string and pully system that is no where near the flight tech of the F-15 and 16.

If anything it will become harder, not easier to fly.

You really don't know what you are talking about so you should probably stop.

Mig-29 is not a 3rd gen fighter by any means. It is considered "super manuverable"

Yes it doesn't have the same tech as 4th gen US planes, but as it stands it is not performing nearly as well as it will once it gets the PFM.

The MiG-29 can out turn fucking anything in the sky, but in DCS it gets out turned by F-15's with full weapons and bags.

Kek, look at their expressions
>>
>The baseline MiG-29 for this comparison will be the MiG-29A (except for 200 kg more fuel and an internal jammer, the MiG-29C was not an improvement over the MiG-29A), as this was the most widely deployed version of the aircraft. The baseline F-16 will be the F-16C Block 40. Although there is a more advanced and powerful version of the F-16C, the Block 40 was produced and fielded during the height of Fulcrum production.

>A combat loaded MiG-29A tips the scales at approximately 38, 500 pounds. This figure includes a full load of internal fuel, two AA-10A Alamo missiles, four AA-11 Archer missiles, 150 rounds of 30mm ammunition and a full centerline 1,500 liter external fuel tank. With 18,600 pounds of thrust per engine, this gives the Fulcrum a takeoff thrust-to-weight ratio of 0.97:1. A similarly loaded air-to-air configured F-16 Block 40 would carry four AIM-120 AMRAAM active radar-guided missiles, two AIM-9M IR-guided missiles, 510 rounds of 20mm ammunition and a 300 gallon external centerline fuel tank. In this configuration, the F-16 weighs 31,640 pounds. With 29,000 pounds of thrust, the F-16 has a takeoff thrust-to-weight ratio of 0.92:1. The reader should be cautioned that these thrust-to-weight ratios are based on uninstalled thrust. Once an engine is installed in the aircraft, it produces less thrust than it does on a test stand due to the air intake allowing in less air than the engine has available on the test stand.
The actual installed thrust-to-weight ratios vary based on the source. On average, they are in the 1:1 regime or better for both aircraft. The centerline fuel tanks can be jettisoned and probably would be if the situation dictated with an associated decrease in drag and weight and an increase in performance.
>>
>>161221101
>speed

>Both aircraft display good performance throughout their flight regimes in the comparison configuration. The MiG-29 enjoys a speed advantage at high altitude with a flight manual limit of Mach 2.3. The F-16’s high altitude limit is
Mach 2.05 but this is more of a limit of inlet design. The MiG-29 has variable geometry inlets to control the shock wave that forms in the inlet and prevent supersonic flow from reaching the engine. The F-16 employs a simple fixed-geometry inlet with a sharp upper lip that extends out beyond the lower portion of the inlet. A shock wave forms on this lip and prevents the flow in the intake from going supersonic. The objective is to keep the air going into the engine subsonic unlike a certain ‘subject matter expert’ on this website who thinks that the air should be accelerated to even higher speeds than the aircraft is traveling. Supersonic air in the compressor section? That’s bad.

>Both aircraft have the same indicated airspeed limit at lower altitudes of
810 knots. This would require the centerline tanks to be jettisoned. The placard limits for the tanks are 600 knots or Mach 1.6 (Mach 1.5 for the MiG-29) whichever less is. It was the researcher’s experience that the MiG-29 would probably not reach this limit unless a dive was initiated. The F-16 Block 40 will easily reach 800 knots on the deck. In fact, power must be reduced to avoid exceeding placard limits. The limit is not thrust, as the F-16 has been test flown on the plus side of 900 knots. The limit for the F-16 is the canopy. Heating due to air friction at such speeds will cause the polycarbonate canopy to get soft and ultimately fail.
>>
>>161221163
>Turning Capability

>The MiG-29 and F-16 are both considered 9 G aircraft. Until the centerline tank is empty, the Fulcrum is limited to four Gs and the Viper to seven Gs. The
MiG-29 is also limited to seven Gs above Mach 0.85 while the F-16, once the centerline tank is empty (or jettisoned) can go to nine Gs regardless of airspeed or Mach number. The MiG-29’s seven G limit is due to loads on the vertical stabilizers. MAPO has advertised that the Fulcrum could be stressed to 12 Gs and still not hurt the airframe. This statement is probably wishful and boastful. The German Luftwaffe, which flew its MiG-29s probably more aggressively than any other operator, experienced cracks in the structure at the base of the vertical tails. The F-16 can actually exceed nine Gs without overstressing the airframe. Depending on configuration, momentary overshoots to as much as 10.3 Gs will not cause any concern with aircraft maintainers.
>>
>>161221213
>Handling

>Of the four fighters I have flown, the MiG-29 has by far the worst handling qualities. The hydro-mechanical flight control system uses an artificial feel system of springs and pulleys to simulate control force changes with varying airspeeds and altitudes. There is a stability augmentation system that makes the aircraft easier to fly but also makes the aircraft more sluggish to flight control inputs. It is my opinion that the jet is more responsive with the augmentation system disengaged. Unfortunately, this was allowed for demonstration purposes only as this also disengages the angle-of-attack (AoA) limiter. Stick forces are relatively light but the stick requires a lot of movement to get the desired response. This only adds to sluggish feeling of the aircraft. The entire time you are flying, the stick will move randomly about one-half inch on its own with a corresponding movement of the flight control surface. Flying the Fulcrum requires constant attention. If the pilot takes his hand off the throttles, the throttles probably won't stay in the position in which they were left. They'll probably slide back into the 'idle' position.
>>
>>161221259
>The Fulcrum is relatively easy to fly during most phases of flight such as takeoff, climb, cruise and landing. However, due to flight control limitations, the pilot must work hard to get the jet to respond the way he wants. This is especially evident in aggressive maneuvering, flying formation or during attempts to employ the gun. Aerial gunnery requires very precise handling in order to be successful. The MiG-29’s handling qualities in no way limit the ability of the pilot to perform his mission, but they do dramatically increase his workload. The F-16’s quadruple-redundant digital flight control system, on the other hand, is extremely responsive, precise and smooth throughout the flight regime.

>There is no auto-trim system in the MiG-29 as in the F-16. Trimming the aircraft is practically an unattainable state of grace in the Fulcrum. The trim of the aircraft is very sensitive to changes in airspeed and power and requires constant attention. Changes to aircraft configuration such as raising and lowering the landing gear and flaps cause significant changes in pitch trim that the pilot must be prepared for. As a result, the MiG-29 requires constant attention to fly. The F-16 auto-trims to one G or for whatever G the pilot has manually trimmed the aircraft for.
>>
>>161221259
>The MiG-29 flight control system also has an AoA limiter that limits the allowable AoA to 26°. As the aircraft reaches the limit, pistons at the base of the stick push the stick forward and reduce the AoA about 5°. The pilot has to fight the flight controls to hold the jet at 26°. The limiter can be overridden, however, with about 17 kg more back pressure on the stick. While not entirely unsafe and at times tactically useful, care must be taken not to attempt to roll the aircraft with ailerons when above 26° AoA. In this case it is best to control roll with the rudders due to adverse yaw caused by the ailerons at high AoA. The F-16 is electronically limited to 26° AoA. While the pilot cannot manually override this limit it is possible to overshoot under certain conditions and risk departure from controlled flight. This is a disadvantage to the F-16 but is a safety margin due its lack of longitudinal stability. Both aircraft have a lift limit of approximately
35° AoA.
>>
>>161221368
>Combat Scenario

>The ultimate comparison of two fighter aircraft comes down to a combat duel between them. After the Berlin Wall came down the reunified Germany inherited 24 MiG-29s from the Nationale Volksarmee of East Germany. The lessons of capitalism were not lost on MAPO-MiG (the Fulcrum’s manufacturer) who saw this as an opportunity to compare the Fulcrum directly with western types during NATO training exercises. MAPO was quick to boast how the MiG-29 had bested F-15s and F-16s in mock aerial combat. They claimed a combination of the MiG’s superior sensors, weapons and low radar cross section allowed the Fulcrum to beat western aircraft. However, much of the early exploitation was done more to ascertain the MiG-29’s capabilities versus attempting to determine what the outcome of actual combat would be. The western press was also quick to pick up on the theme. In 1991, Benjamin Lambeth cited an article in Jane’s Defence Weekly which stated that the German MiG-29s had beaten F-16s with simulated BVR range shots of more than 60 km. How was this possible when the MiG-29 cannot launch an AA-10A Alamo from outside about 25 km? Was this a case of the fish getting bigger with every telling of the story? The actual BVR capability of the MiG-29 was my biggest disappointment. Was it further exposure to the German Fulcrums in realistic training that showed the jet for what it truly is? It seems that MAPO’s free advertising backfired in the end as further orders were limited to the 18 airplanes sold to Malaysia.
>>
>>161221426
>f F-16Cs and MiG-29s face off in aerial combat, both would detect each other on the radar at comparable range. Armed with the AIM-120 AMRAAM, the F-16s would have the first shot opportunity at more than twice the range as the Fulcrums. A single F-16 would be able to discriminately target individual and multiple Fulcrums. The MiG-29’s radar will not allow this. If there is more than one F-16 in a formation, a Fulcrum pilot would not know exactly which F-16 the radar had locked and he can engage only one F-16 at a time. A Viper pilot can launch AMRAAMS against multiple MiG-29s on the first pass and support his missiles via data link until the missiles go active. He can break the radar lock and leave or continue to the visual arena and employ short range infrared guided missiles or the gun. The Fulcrum pilot must wait until about 13 nautical miles (24 kilometers) before he can shoot his BVR missile. The Alamo is a semi-active missile that must be supported by the launching aircraft until impact. This brings the Fulcrum pilot closer to the AMRAAM. In fact, just as the the Fulcrum pilot gets in range to fire an Alamo, the AMRAAM is seconds away from impacting his aircraft. The advantage goes to the F-16.

>What if both pilots are committed to engage visually? The F-16 should have the initial advantage as he knows the Fulcrum’s exact altitude and has the target designator box in the head-up display (HUD) to aid in visual acquisition. The Fulcrum’s engines smoke heavily and are a good aid to gaining sight of the adversary. Another advantage is the F-16’s large bubble canopy with 360° field-of-view. The Fulcrum pilot’s HUD doesn’t help much in gaining sight of the F-16. The F-16 is small and has a smokeless engine. The MiG-29 pilot sets low in his cockpit and visibility between the 4 o’clock and 7 o’clock positions is virtually nonexistent.
>>
>>161221489
>Charts that compare actual maneuvering performance of the two aircraft are classified. It was the researcher’s experience that the aircraft have comparable initial turning performance. However, the MiG-29 suffers from a higher energy bleed rate than the F-16. This is due to high induced drag on the airframe during high-G maneuvering. F-16 pilots that have flown against the Fulcrum have made similar observations that the F-16 can sustain a high-G turn longer. This results in a turn rate advantage that translates into a positional advantage for the F-16.

>The F-16 is also much easier to fly and is more responsive at slow speed.
The Fulcrum’s maximum roll rate is 160° per second. At slow speed this decreases to around 20° per second. Coupled with the large amount of stick movement required, the Fulcrum is extremely sluggish at slow speed. Maneuvering to defeat a close-range gun shot is extremely difficult if the airplane won’t move. For comparison, the F-16’s slow speed roll rate is a little more than 80° per second.

>A lot has been written and theorized about the so-called “Cobra Maneuver” that impresses people at airshows. MAPO claimed that no western fighter dare do this same maneuver in public. They also claimed that the Cobra could be used to break the radar lock of an enemy fighter (due to the slow airspeed, there is no Doppler signal for the radar to track) or point the nose of the aircraft to employ weapons. Western fighter pilots were content to let the Russians brag and hope for the opportunity to see a MiG-29 give up all its airspeed. The fact that this maneuver is prohibited in the flight manual only validates the fact that this maneuver was a stunt. Lambeth was the first American to get a flight in the Fulcrum. Even his pilot conceded that the Cobra required a specially prepared aircraft and was prohibited in operational MiG-29 units
>>
>>161221554
>Another maneuver performed by the Fulcrum during its introduction to the West is the so-called “Tail Slide”. The nose of the jet is brought to 90° pitch and the airspeed is allowed to decay. Eventually, the Fulcrum begins to “slide” back, tail-first, until the nose drops and the jet begins to fly normally again. The Soviets boasted this maneuver demonstrated how robust the engines were as this would cause western engines to flameout. The first maneuver demonstrated to me during my F-15 training was the Tail Slide. The engines did not flameout.

>The MiG-29 is not without strong points. The pilot can override the angle of attack limiter. This is especially useful in vertical maneuvering or in last ditch attempts to bring weapons to bear or defeat enemy shots. The HMS and AA-11 Archer make the Fulcrum a deadly foe in the visual arena. The AA-11 is far superior to the American AIM-9M. By merely turning his head, the MiG pilot can bring an Archer to bear. The one limitation, however, is that the Fulcrum pilot has no cue as to where the Archer seeker head is actually looking. This makes it impossible to determine if the missile is tracking the target, a flare, or some other hot spot in the background. (Note: the AIM-9X which is already fielded on the F-15C, and to be fielded on the F-16 in 2007, is far superior to the AA-11)
>>
>>161221609
>Fulcrum pilots have enjoyed their most success with the HMS/Archer combination in one versus one training missions. In this sterile environment, where both aircraft start within visual range of each other, the MiG-29 has a great advantage. Not because it is more maneuverable than the F-16. That is most certainly not the case regardless of the claims of the Fulcrum’s manufacturer and numerous other misinformed propaganda sources. The weapon/sensor integration with the HMS and Archer makes close-in missile employment extremely easy for the Fulcrum’s pilot. My only one versus one fight against a MiG-29 (in something other than another MiG-29) was flown in an F-16 Block 52. This was done against a German MiG-29 at Nellis AFB, Nevada. The F-16 outturned and out-powered the Fulcrum in every situation.

>The Fulcrum’s gun system is fairly accurate as long as the target does not attempt to defeat the shot. If the target maneuvers, the gunsight requires large corrections to get back to solution. Coupled with the jet’s imprecise handling, this makes close-in maneuvering difficult. This is very important when using the gun. Although the Fulcrum has a 30 mm cannon, the muzzle velocity is no more than the 20 mm rounds coming out of the F-16’s gun. The MiG’s effective gun range is actually less than that of the F-16 as the 20 mm rounds are more aerodynamic and maintain their velocity longer.
>>
>>161221667
>If the fight lasts very long, the MiG pilot is at a decided disadvantage and must either kill his foe or find a timely opportunity to leave the fight without placing himself on the defensive. The Fulcrum A holds only 300 pounds more internal fuel than the F-16 and its two engines go through it quickly. There are no fuel flow gauges in the cockpit. Using the clock and the fuel gauge, in full afterburner the MiG-29 uses fuel 3.5 to 4 times faster than the Viper. My shortest MiG-29 sortie was 16 minutes from brake release to touchdown.

>It should not be forgotten that fights between fighters do not occur in a vacuum. One-versus-one comparisons are one thing, but start to include other fighters into the fray and situational awareness (SA) plays an even bigger role. The lack of SA-building tools for MiG-29 pilots will become an even bigger factor if they have more aircraft to keep track of. Poor radar and HUD displays, poor cockpit ergonomics and poor handling qualities added to the Fulcrum pilot’s workload and degraded his overall SA. It was my experience during one-versus-one scenarios emphasizing dogfighting skills, the results came down to pilot skill.
>>
>>161221731
>In multi-ship scenarios, such as a typical four versus four training mission, the advantage clearly went to the side with the highest SA. Against F-15s and F-16s in multi-ship fights, the MiG-29s were always outclassed. It was nearly impossible to use the great potential of the HMS/Archer combination when all the Eagles and Vipers couldn’t be accounted for and the Fulcrums were on the defensive. The MiG-29’s design was a result of the Soviet view on tactical aviation and the level of technology available to their aircraft industry. The pilot was not meant to have a lot of SA. The center of fighter execution was the ground controller. The pilot’s job was to do as instructed and not to make independent decisions. Even the data link system in the MiG-29 was not meant to enhance the pilot’s SA. He was merely linked steering, altitude and heading cues to follow from the controller. If the MiG-29 pilot is cut off from his controller, his autonomous capabilities are extremely limited. Western fighter pilots are given the tools they need to make independent tactical decisions. The mission commander is a pilot on the scene. All other assets are there to assist and not to direct. If the F-16 pilot loses contact with support assets such as the E-3 Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft, he has all the tools to complete the mission autonomously.

>The combat record of the MiG-29 speaks for itself. American F-15s and F-
16s (a Dutch F-16 shot down a MiG-29 during Operation Allied Force) have downed MiG-29s every time there has been encounters between the types. The only known MiG-29 “victories” occurred during Operation Desert Storm when an Iraqi MiG-29 shot down his own wingman on the first night of the war and a Cuban MiG-29 brought down 2 “mighty” Cessnas. Are there more victories for the Fulcrum? Not against F-15s or F-16s.

>Designed and built to counter the fourth generation American fighters, The MiG-29 Fulcrum was a concept that was technologically and doctrinally hindered from the beginning. Feared in the west prior to the demise of the Soviet Union, it was merely an incremental improvement to the earlier Soviet fighters it replaced. Its lack of a market when put in direct competition to western designs should attest to its shortcomings. The German pilots who flew the aircraft said that the MiG-29 looked good at an airshow but they wouldn’t have wanted to take one to combat. Advanced versions such as the SMT and MiG-33? Certainly better but has anyone bought one?

>Lt. Col. Johann Köck, commander of the German MiG-29 squadron from
September 1995 to September 1997, was outspoken in his evaluation of the Fulcrum. “It has no range, its navigation system is unreliable and the radar breaks often and does not lend it self to autonomous operations”, he said. He added that the best mission for NATO MiG-29s would be as a dedicated adversary aircraft for other NATO fighters and not as part of NATO’s frontline fighter force

Its like a broken record for the last 10 years and while the West managed to win against every air adversary for the last 50 years, the might of the Russian air force could not secure air space over a country that is smaller than fucking Austria/Serbia.

All those MiG's that could "supersonic bomb targets from 40km away from 60.000 feet at mach 2" or "hit you with radar guided missiles from 150km away" could not secure the airspace against an adversary that hat no dedicated fighters only strikers and a total of maybe 10 - 15 SAM's of Russian origin.

Is Wings over Flanders Fields worth it these days? I like WW1 and I like flying in RoF but I heard WOFF has a great dynamic campaign and a shitload of planes compared to RoF.

Finding a copy of CFS3 and 60.- is still a bit rough though.

I fly the MiG-29 all the time and I'm the first to talk about just how horrible its combat record is. I mention it all the time and have plenty of posts about how horrible Russian aircraft combat records are, even when flown by Russian pilots.

So someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I want to see if I have the general idea right.

Technology and training wise, the US has always reigned supreme since the start of the cold war.

However, during the peak of the Soviet military strengths, the only reason a conventional war would have been fairly even is due to massive Soviet numbers right?

What years would these be?

No cold war would have been even, but I'm just taking nukes out of the equation.

Since the great purges, rather. However the USSR started catching up by the 50s.

True to some extent, during the peak of soviet military strength (about early 70s to maybe mid 80s), both powers would have more or less equally matched technology wise in a conventional war.

>>161250197
Kill ratios are pretty terrible metric unless all parties have huge representation.

Since not even a single loss is acceptable in modern aerial combat, you get situations like the 27, the 31, etc. who've never been shot down because they don't use them when there's a risk. Pilots and equipment is simply too expensive to use unless you know it's a guaranteed successful mission.

The US operates under the same principle, btw.
>>
>>161250353

I understand what you are saying, but I feel like that applies mostly to the US and to everyone else more recently.

I doubt the Soviets thought losses were unacceptable, not until very recently.

Once i separate from the Air Force, I'm planning on finishing the last two years of school I have left and applying to both AF OTS and Navy OCS.

If I don't get in either of those, I'm gonna apply to be a Army Helo pilot.

If that fails I'll go back to ATC in the FAA
>>

>>161252378
I don't know how difficult it is to get aviation through OCS, but my NROTC unit had decent success selecting pilots/NFOs. Out of my 4, I think we had 8 people who wanted aviation (I was at a really small unit), and 6 out of the 8 got it.

I don't know much about OCS other than I checked in w/ a BUNCH of kids from OCS. Theres probably 30 of us, and at least 20 are from OCS (mixed pilot and NFO).
>>
>>161253105

The only reason I don't want to do ROTC for either, is from what I understand by the time you find out what you are doing, you are locked in, and I'd basically kill my self if i got locked into some more bull shit.

Where as OCS/OTS you can go in knowing exactly what you are going to do assuming you graduate, which i'd rather do.

Not sure about the Navy, but the Air Force is desperate as fuck for pilots right now. They are losing them like crazy, even though they have a fucking $250,000 re-up bonus.

If I had a degree, I'd be applying to USAF OTS every fucking chance I get.

They're the same game and can play with each other, see the FAQ for more details on how it works: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/15201-game-and-dlc-activation-guide/

The only real difference is that if you buy off their website you have to pay in dollars and the jews at steam don't get a cut.

DLC and expansions take some time to appear on the steam store after they're released on http://il2sturmovik.com/ but they're completely compatible with each other afaik.

Buy BoM if you like BoS and have a particular interest in crappy earlyer war planes.

Personally I didn't bother with BoM but have pre-ordered BoK because it makes my willy hard.

I want you to read this sentence, and really take it to heart. There's literally no reason, ever, to buy a game off steam when it is sold through the developers own website, and comes with its own installer/updater.

There's no reason to buy RoF on steam, there's no reason to buy DCS on steam, and there's no reason to BoS on steam.

I mean in all seriousness I'll probably buy the viggo, assuming they show some unedited or lightly-edited footage of the thing actually flying and working, but Cobracuck's Jolly Fuck's treatment of the MiG has left me a bit cold.

So hype for the viggen. I'm anticipating the stream shows quite a bit, it should be basically done by now.

I've been getting pretty burned out with FC3 shit. I like the planes, but it's just starting to get boring because there is nothing to do.

Meanwhile the MiG-21 vs F-5 server is fun even if it's air quake. It's a good mix of old and new. 3rd and early 4th gen are my favorite time period.

Hopefully the Viggen coming out will revive simg ops, and we'll have f-5s, viggens, and MiG21 ops and shit.
