Horror Edition

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Oh, yes. That is pleases me the most.

And about Arena... I have seen your Tartarian SCs, they are good, but can they withstand the strength of the real overgeared SCs I possess? I hope Ermor will Wish for the Arena Match instead of his stupid Armageddon spam plan he declared.

Also, only Nazca remains to send turn in. Why won't we set him AI already? If you have no familiar dominion players willing to help, I may ask my guys to set him AI. Do you need assistance?

Yeah, I tried some diplo. Jomon responded to my initial message with a declaration of war, Atlantis was friendly but never did anything, Bogarus and Agartha outright ignored my messages (Specifically, Bogarus agreed to borders during expansion, but nothing later). Caelum eventually agreed to hit Jomon after I shut down his second invasion, but was slow enough that Jomon was able to rebuild and recover. Atlantis had a similar problem in fighting you. I don't know if he even did, in fact. I was in regular communication with TC, and had to abandon the siege because I couldn't spare the manpower to take his capital while fighting you and jomon (and Bogarus). (Also some other stuff- he offered me all his gems, and I expected him to open up a front against you, which he never did).

Bogarus was bizarre. He invaded just before before Caelum attacked Jomon, but would constantly send a full stack to take one province and then retreat. I wiped him once or twice with defensive traps, but that was additional pressure on my manpower since he always came back. Strands was an attempt to approve that, but he ignored it, then quit and the AI went nuts with heavy cav in my backdoor. By the time he left, I'm pretty sure I had killed or disabled almost every mage he had recruited.

Playing conservatively on your part was the right call. Since I had multiple fronts, the more you kept me stalemated, the further behind I fell. I was trying to bait you into an attack earlier in our war so I could wipe it and get some breathing room to permanently solve Bogarus.

The way the game was going, though, Agartha would have just attacked me as soon as I did so.

In retrospect, I screwed up by not turning on you turn 17 when I decided you were diplomonstering, instead of going ahead with my China plans. I also should have considered fucking over Bogarus instead of trying to curry diplo points by pointing out that they had no pd, since they attacked 2 turns later.
>>
>>160859838
Also, now that the game is over, I'd like to share some of your messages, if that's cool.

What was your stradegy with the armies and what kind of pretender and scales did you choose?

Any bigger mistakes you would avoid, if you had to play pangea again.
>>
>>160856656
>>160859838

I did my best to try and get back into the game, but I literally had no idea how to come back from getting completely eaten from the elves.

My first year ended with like six provinces after I had lost just about every expansion party for x reason. Really ticked me off since I had practiced the expansion a lot before the game was even announced in thread. (I had asked the admin to make an LA game for me to play with him not in it)

So after I was surrounded by much more powerful nations, I saw my neighbor go AI and decided to eat them before getting into a war with a player. Next thing I know, Pan asks me to ally versus Midgard... then Midgard attacks me, I lose all the forts and research labs I was going to try to build... then I learn that Midgard was asked to attack me...

After crawling out from the dead with the cost of all the gems I had, I tried to take on AI to get back into the game, takes waaay too long. All the while I try to figure out how to get back at Pan with a vastly inferior army and absolutely no magic research. Really not something I want to attack when I see my enemy borders having 6x the amount of troops I got.

Eh whatever... I'm a scrublord. I will go down saying, I never went AI.

>>
>>160861956
I had dormant D4N4 Carrion Dragon with scales. Carrion Dragon is a very potent deterrent (Soul Vortex+Invulnerability and Quickness and Body Ethereal from Centaur Sages does wonders against regular troops) and could reliably cast Mother Oak with a booster (I opted not to, initially because I didn't want such a diplomatic malus at decisive moment, and then because the pretender got horror marked, although he survived the two horror attacks that came during the game anyway) in addition to increasing your diversity with death. I think Carrion Dragon is a good pick, although putting your S/W/A gem income to use would also be welcome.

As for mistakes, you definitely shouldn't take luck for starters. Yet another game where it did nothing at all but I keep falling to the trap (partially for thematic reasons). Another thing that comes to my mind is misuse Stymphalian Birds. There's a number of great tactics that utilize them (such as using an army without steel-armoured troops of your own and casting Iron Bane, or just alpha strikes against light infantry/archers/mages) but during the course of the game I throw a lot of them away by grouping them with other infantry, such that the harpies charged the enemy and died surrounded by enemies or to friendly crossbow fire. You'd probably want to keep them on guard commander more when there's such a risk. Centaur Cataphracts might also have been worth utilizing more beyond expansion.
>>
I'm new as fuck
When creating a Pretender, is it better to put like 2 points in every school except maybe Blood, or put like 4-5 in a few schools?
>>
>>160866896
Neither of those things.

Otherwise it depends entirely on the nation.
>>
>>160866896
Neither.

As for the actual answer, ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________IT DEPENDS
>>
>>160866896
Putting four in a few schools can be good for some nations if they're schools that you need. I made a pretender like that for a nationgen nation that has national summons but not the paths to access them.

>when you realize mictlan went quadbless but Marverni went Tri-bless

god speed you beautiful bastard
>>
>>160867364
Yes.

Some nations want a major bless which means 9 points in a path. Some nations don't give a rats ass about the bless so you can just take whatever lets you craft the things you want and cast the spells you want.

I can't think of a nation that wants no magic, though.
>>
>>160867364
Your intended goals/strategy, your nation, other present nations, the map (and how cramped it might be), if rare events are common or not, maybe other misc settings

Just putting ~2 points in every path is (sort of) a "rainbow build" and is frequently used by nations that want an awake/dormant pretender walking around sight-searching a bunch (which, as a design, isn't very common) or other niche things. It also might provide a lot of access to magics you otherwise wouldn't have (and thus also requires knowing more about the game), so you can exploit that.
>>
>>160866896

Varies by nation. Many benefit from major blesses (i.e. 9 in a path). There are uses for "Rainbow" pretenders, but they're fairly niche. Some want dominion scales before all else. Some want an awake pretender to boost expansion. Some want a pretender with specific paths to leverage national spells.

And most want at least two of those things! Deciding the tradeoff is where the strategy comes in.
>>
>>160859195
>wildly disproportionately powerful nations didn't get added in
>this is less fun
>>
>>160867749

Naturally! I should have a wildly disproportionately powerful nation, everyone else should have random junk. It's the best way to play natgen.

Question, I was under the impression that when playing in a disciple game when a team reached 5 temples they'd get bumped up a tier in dominion strength? My team has hit 5 combined temples and now I have 5 temples myself(8 total in the team, team of 2 nations) and we haven't seen an increase in dominion strength. What am I missing?
>>
>>160869803
Tisor can recruit 1.5 expansion parties per turn with their chariots. With an awake snake, prod 3, and shuttling commanders in to lead extra expansion parties, it can hit 40+ provinces in year 1. Alternatively, they can go for a bless since they also have insane sacreds - 3 attacks, 27 hp, 19 prot, 17 MR, Berserker 5 (!!!) and a werebear wounded form.

I think that Tisor's mages are terrible and wouldn't want to play them, but it seems like it'd be pretty straightforward to roll over the first neighbor that they meet with either a raw resource advantage or sacreds that require specific magic to deal with. A good player can snowball to victory just off their troops, and a bad player can still take someone else out of the game if they bother to try.

the number of temples you need is 5 times the number of players on a team. So a team of 2 needs 10, a team of 5 needs 25. The logic here is that with each additional player you can build temples that many times faster.

Earlier before I got insanely busy and back when Asphodel was generally taking their turns on time, I was just forcehosting when Nazca was the last to take their turn (I had already wasted turns setting two others AI).

If you're got someone that'll set them AI, that's fine by me. Otherwise if Asphodel will stop waiting until the last second to do turns, I'll just continue forcehosting when they're the only ones left.

OK, this evening I'll ask the people from my IRC if someone willing to help setting Nazca AI. But I'll have trouble posting their e-mail here, so I guess I have to send it to you in-game.

Also Ermor went after Armageddon, as I expected. Funny that the one who suffered from it troops-wise is him. But income dropped again. We have to seriously put him in check.

I do know about turn limits. First it routs. It can't go anywhere, so it stays. Then you rout. Then it's berserkers rout. Then your berserkers rout. Then it's destroyed.

The problem being, even if you have berserkers, they're probably all gone before it gets destroyed.

If you cannot escape at your time limit, you melt. See: Golems used offensively.
>>
>>160906458

Yes. I just said that.

The problem is that if you're using that to try and kill it, you need to ensure that YOU have shit on the battlefield when it hits turn limit.

Which is difficult, because you're past your own autorout turn limit.
>>
>>160906521
Seriously, load up a test game, fill one province with skelly spammers, teleport your S9 monolith onto it. If it doesn't kill the spammers with soulslay/enslave whatever, it dies.

How would /domg/ fix astral pretender chassis?
Right now you're forced to put 5+ points of Astral into them even if you don't need the path, just to protect them from Magic Duel & Mind Hunt

It makes pretenders like Monolith and Celestial General much worse than they actually are.

>>
>>160912764
I don't really think they need fixing. Looking at the different things you can do with your pretender:

>bless
>scales
Neither really cares much about low astral, since you're not taking the pretender in order to field it in fights.

>rainbow
If it takes astral, will almost always have decent levels (because that's where most of the good spells/items are). Doesn't usually get fielded without an army (which can include S1 mages to soak up duels).

>awake expander
First, fairly sure there aren't any good awake expanders with astral. More importantly, they're not going to deal with magic duel until past expansion when their role is mostly finished.

>SC pretender
The only one which gets significantly affected, and does anyone run pretenders specifically for this purpose anymore?

>It makes pretenders like Monolith and Celestial General much worse than they actually are.
Looking at your two specific examples, I don't really think astral is a big issue for them.

Monolith is great, even with astral included. In this case astral lets you grab S3 for teleport cheaply, so I'd call it an overall benefit because it lets your pretender move.

Celestial General isn't bad because it has astral, it's bad because it's expensive for what it gives (mainly booster access) compared to human pretenders. If you took the S1 away it would still be bad.

By the time I returned from opening the blinds and getting the paper, those restrictions gave me the pictured nation. It has the blood magic that I ordered and the Vans. Oh, that's much less than I thought. I fiddled with it and tried genning some stuff as I said, and it just gets stuck on some error like "unable to make primary race" for seemingly ever.

I think it struggles to mix certain races with certain paths. From looking at .txt files, they have magic path weightings and other stuff. Wondering if that's part of the problem in my case.

I'm going to get coffee and think about that error message.

In the .dm file, I'd look for #magicskill and #custommagic. Magic skill is the base path (B1 in this case) and custom magic are their randoms. I'd then change those.

So my B1s currently look this:
>#magicskill 7 1
>#custommagic 19712 100
That's B1 with a 100% chance of +1 in blood, astral, earth, or air.

I want a F1 with 50% of getting +1 to F or W so I change it to this:
>#magicskill 0 1
>#custommagic 640 100

>>160918525
Oh don't think about the error message too much.
I'm just probably demanding too specific stuff from it in pathing - nothing as simple as what you've got. Especially given that it's random and just has to shove things together until it all works.

Just changing their magic levels manually like that seems like a good way to go. Don't need to make it do *everything* for you, right?

like a month ago i was messaging people and telling them to stop ulm from expanding. it feels good to know theyre going to get their shit pushed in now
>>
>>160918685
I've got a solution to your primary failures.

Go into the data/races folder, open up the race you're generating for, and change the #basechance to something like 10000. That'll cause it to almost exclusively generate that race and you'll hopefully find your stuff much faster.

The massive downside of that is your nation seeds will be meaningless once you change the data files back but whatever.
>>
>>160918893
Wow, spoilers.

Anyways, Hinnom is definitely in this. Even if I've managed to finally surpass him in size, the advantage that being the only blood intensive nation at this stage in the game gives him cannot be overstated. But we've been over that, so I shan't belabor the point.

And any one of the three UW nations is potent enough to tip the balance. Or even have a shot at victory, if they manage to break the uw deadlock.
>>
>>160919080
Really, that helps? Seems like it'd do that automatically or something when you're saying "make me a nation with this."

But yeah, it worked basically immediately. Thanks.
>>
>>160918685

I really hate how the natgen misuses filters. Instead of forcing a generation that fits the filters, it just generates normally over and over until it gets one that fits. Needless to say a lot of filters can basically make generation impossible.
>>
>>160916348

No reinvig.
>>
>>160918113

That's because adding nation restrictions doesn't change the gen code at all.

It just generates nations and discards them if they don't match what you asked for. Which is why if you want something specific it'll take fucking forever.

>muuch with sidhe slaves
>even the sidhe troop comm and mage are #slaves

FROGS ARE DOMINANT.

This natgen stuff is pretty fun. Just have to fiddle with basechances a bit to get what you really want. Really appreciate this new GUI, even if filters are oddly implemented.
I had to set muuch at 100 and sidhe at 50 to prevent failed restrictions for primary race/'unit of race'

Tecatlan did result in more Sidhe than I desired, which is unfortunate. Dunno if lowering sidhe basechance will make them more or less numerous in-nation? Also the only troop sacred is a Sidhe wyvern guy, which doesn't seem fitting status for a slave, so I need to add a filter to make sure a sacred muuch is present.

Filters used were
Age: MA
Primary Race: Muuch
Unit of Race: Sidhe (Troop)
themes: muuch_themes - advanced, muuch_themes - slaver

Adding in "Sacred: Race" and genning again got me Xayapico, which is cooler.

I don't see a problem with this.
>>
>>160929774
Hey, if I took two forts I would probably claim the reward. But the gold is not that huge of a benefit compared to the forts you're already getting, which is partially offset by the fact that you must reveal that you've taken the forts to everyone in order to claim the reward, and by the fact that you have no guarantees that he will actually pay.
>>
>>160929930
3000 gold is pretty nice, my dude. A reward like that isn't going to make you attack them if you weren't going to already, but it provides a nice bonus for encouraging a lad to do so sooner.

Ask nation-specific questions. There's no good universal rainbow pretender design that will work for everything.
>>
>>160938746
I'm in nationgen, I know the specifics like which paths I need. What I'm wondering about is the general stuff. Should a rainbow be imprisoned, dormant, or is it really worth the scales to pay for awake? That kind of thing.
>>
>>160938746
this, desu. Rainbows are designed to get you paths that you're missing and that work well with what you have.
>>
If R'lyeh stales turn 1, I'm unstarting, kicking him out, and restarting the game, if that's alright with y'all.
>>
>>160938880
Generally you'd want Great Sage awake to bolster early research, the other ones should be dormant, IMO.
>>
>>160938206
I'm not joining a 4chan steam group in order to play a game. Why don't you just recruit here?
>>
>>160938880
With awake you get both early research boost that might help you reach magic goals quickly (for example, t-strike + storm or EQ etc.) and sitesearching. Dormant gives you more points (perhaps for a better bless or scales), Imprisoned is almost never good for rainbow.

"Worth or not" is a nation-specific question as well.
>>
>>160939202
because anonymous games means that experience people can join them.
>>
>>160939202
First of all, the group is not exclusively 4chan.

I'm too new to know of all the Nations and how they work, however so far I'm really liking EA Ulm, so basically I wat to not suck. So is there some approved strategy or general guideline that I should know of while playing it?
>>
>>160951728
It depends. Try shit against the AI until you can hit 12-15 provinces and 1-2 forts in the first year, in addition to your cap. From there, try to figure out what spells will be most beneficial for you to focus on researching. Then try and figure out an endgame that is efficient for your nation and pretender to utilise.

I just made a game with Riverlands. New map and I'll join.
>>
>>160953185
This is a newbie game, look up the steam thread if you want to join. And the map is up for the discussion.
>>
>>160951969
Honestly, that's a huge ask for an experienced player, much less a newer one.

>>160951728
Okay, so Ulm is great. It's got efficient mages with useful paths and cheap stealthy troops that still hit hard. Your best use of early magic is going to be stuff that buffs up your troops. If you are fighting against an enemy that uses relatively few elite troops, you will want ways to disable them. If you are fighting against an enemy that spams troops - especially C'tis and Sauromatia, which spam skeletons - you will want ways to clear enemies en masse.

The best early game troop buffs for Ulm are Strength of Giants and Legions of Steel cast on Steel Maidens and other dual wielders. Both of these can be cast by any E2 random smith after casting Summon Earthpower. This means that you will want Conjuration 3, Enchantment 3, and Construction 3. If you need more firepower to bring down enemies, you can use Flaming Arrows at Enchantment 4. An F2 smith can cast this after casting Summon Phoenix Power. Because these buffs have a large or battlefield wide Area of Effect, you need only a few mages to have a big impact. Enchantment 5 unlocks Horde of Skeletons, which your D2 shamans can use as well.

For anti-elites, you will find the most useful spells in Alteration. Earth Meld hits a decent area and locks the troops up so that your guys can hit them unopposed. This will be your best spell against elves and similarly hard to hit units. Destruction strips armor off of units, which is great against units with high protection. Alteration also has some buff spells, like Wooden Warriors and eventually Mass Prot and Marble Warriors, as well as Swarm which is great at clogging up enemy armies.

Against enemy hordes, you can eventually use Rain of Stones, but early on you will use Fire and Earth Elementals at conj 5.

After this, you will need to tailor your research based on gem availability and what you're fighting against, but you will find useful spells in most schools.

>It depends. Try shit against the AI until you can hit 12-15 provinces and 1-2 forts in the first year, in addition to your cap.
jesus christ the only way I see myself having 12 provinces in one year is either making some invincible awake war god to conquer provinces alone, or an imprisoned one so i can make my dominion have a billion income and resources.
Also what cap are you referring to?
>>
OK, I'm confused. I thought there would be a R'lyeh stale by now, since the turn timer is set to 24h and the first turn went out about 25 hours ago. Can someone explain to me what went wrong?
(I will now proceed to kick R'lyeh from the game and restart.)
>>
>>160953747
I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that 90% of nations can capture 12 provinces in a year without an awake god.
>>
>>160953747
Those are both acceptable expansion strats for EA Ulm.

There are basically three ways to play Ulm -

Awake expander snowball - get big fast, kill your neighbors, kill their neighbors, win the game before your relatively shallow path access sets you back. This is the easiest to play, but you have to be aggressive all the time and is harder in larger games.

Dormant titan snowball - the same, but you get marginally less big and use an SC to kill your enemy's midgame armies. Your dormant titan can help extend your mage's strength with big paths providing boosters that you don't otherwise have access to (eg - an A4E3 titan, which Ulm can get at a fine price lets you make staves of elemental mastery as well as the two air-specific boosters).

Imprisoned ring nonsense - this is probably the hardest one to use properly, and relies on finding or fighting for an astral indie province to site search. Eventually, you use rings to get full diversity and deeper death access, with tartarians and other endgame options. This is very, very difficult to do well with given that you don't have the early / earlymid strength of the first two options, so I'd only bother with it on a larger map. You still do want to play at least somewhat aggressively to get to a decent size, but you won't feel like a crippled baby if you fail to end the game by Year 5.

No, I'm just saying that it's a big deal, or at least as much of one as exists in Dominions. You're saying to figure out everything about the nation, from expansion to research to end game. That's something that SHOULD be done, but even experienced players talk to each other, try things out, and take a fair bit of time to figure this sort of thing out. It's more or less the entirety of Dominions strategy.

I found the problem. Bret is supposed to have #1020 and #1021 or "Destrier Hoof" and "Breton Heavy Lance" on a ton of stuff. Nuln is also using #1020 and #1021 for some of their weapons so Breton is running around with a lot of overpowered shit. That #1020, for instance, might be giving them +1 in all paths.

To fix this, the admin needs change the DM so that the weapon IDs don't overlap. You can see the problem areas with #newweapon 1020 and such.
>>
>>160970927
There's nothing that gives +1 in very path as far as I can tell, just Bows of Avalorn and Staves of Avalorn, which they've always had as long as I've played them.

Kabti'ili is a shaman of ancient pedigree. He fled from his brother's jaws when he was a hatchling and disappeared into the marsh. He was found and raised by a Couatl, a mysterious sacred serpent of the swamp. After the completion of the Couatl's training, he returned to his tribe and defended them against the Taskmasters of C'tis. One night, he received a revelation from the Great Lord of C'tis. He led his brethren to the Temple Marsh and swore the Lizard Kings his fealty.

So yeah, it was originally a marsh that first had a miasma rise up from it in MA and then became a waste in LA (references become Desert Tombs / Sacred Desert)

So I'm thinking about the mechanics of a WH40k Imperium nation. Specifically lasguns. The projectiles would be a pain in the ass. These are the 2 options I see:

No projectile
Pros: hits instantly like a laser, doesn't look stupid
Cons: forces it to be a hitscan weapon with 100% accuracy, no visual indication of a shot for the player

Elongated fireball sprite
Pros: closest visually to a laser, gives an indication of where a shot is going, allows misses and friendly fire
Cons: looks silly, arcs through the sky rather than hitting instantly

Someone is trying to convince me that Fear does not cause morale checks and can't route all by itself, but manual says otherwise. Who should I believe, random shithead on invisionfree or manual?

>>

The manual's stuff on fear isn't very good, I wouldn't trust it.

However, I've tested and you can definitely drive enemies off with fear alone (it just takes a lot more effort than fear plus damage).

So my advice is don't believe either, go test it yourself.

Helmet of Heroes and Herald Lance both give inspiration.

A bag of win for supply is always good.

Some people like giving forged bows/xbows to them, so they have something to do rather than stand around at the back.
>>
>>160992249

there's a fire rod that gives +25 command, might be worth it if you've invested in +insp. gear. Armour of Knights keeps your dude/investment safer from RoS/arrows. Bottle o' Water helps against assassinations, as does Life Contract. Ultimately though unless you have a guy with 120 lead. or native +insp, it's not worth forging leadership stuff for them. Not enough payout for your gem buck. And none of the bows or whatever are worth making unless you're Ulm.

It's at sixteen point something land provinces per land nation. But I guess the number of Thrones means expansion's more constrained.
>>
Are pretenders available to all nations like Archmage, Enchantress etc good or shit? I can't tell but I like them. They are VERY fragile though
Also crone is 0 points and new paths cost 10 how the fuck is this allowed
>>
>>160993062
Human pretenders aren't good for high paths, high dominion, or fighting
They are only good for variety of medium level spells, but many chassis can do that and still have other cool abilities
>>
>>160993062
Human chassis are good for many low paths, which is useful for sitesearching & forging

But if you want strong dominion, big scales, and major blesses. Then beast and immobile pretenders are good.
>>
>>160993062

Chassis is mediocre. As you say, super fragile. If you want reasonable dom strength you're paying through the nose for it.

They're solid rainbow options, because of the low new-path-cost, but that's about it. And honestly, the Demilich is frequently a better option for that. All the same weaknesses plus immobile, but it's got immortal and two higher starting Dom strength, which is kinda a big deal. S3 for Teleporting is only a scale and a half, and you can usually find enough sites in the other paths in your lab provinces to be able to ritual the others.
>>

D10 Fountain of Blood is Fear 30.

After that, your options are D10 Devourer of Souls, Dracolich or Carrion Dragon, all of which are Fear 25.

If you want summonable commander rather than a pretender, the Harvester of Sorrows is the best generic option at Fear 15. The one unique option that can match that is Azazel.

>>
>>161000240
Vamp Queen is still marginally useful for early-game bloodhunting, vamp count summoning, and blood battlefield spells (not for domsummon though, fuck Illfraud). I picked her for LA Ulm once for the thematic reasons, and I gotta say, Bloodletting + lifelong protection is SEVERELY underrated. You can basically rout almost any invading army with your pretender and 2-3 vamp counts alone.

Hey don't diss our most beautiful and immortal queen, fairest maiden in all the land.

For LA Ulm I feel she is quite good. Dormant, she can give you the scales you need, she has the paths you require to summon vampires out of the gate, so you can get her out early and start summoning if you have got an early blood economy up. Immortal and hard to kill she can deal with troublesome indies that you haven't been able to mop up yet, and if you get into an early war, she can be very useful surviving it.

Yo Sum1, what are your plans regarding Mari's flagellants? So far, I still think that using pillaging is kinda detrimental compared to something like MA T'ien's eunuch conscription which is actually kinda useful.
Why not have Missionaries/Inquisitors/High Inquisitors have a similar make monsters spell or have them only appear while preaching?
>>
>>161016534
The pillaging thing is already worth using my dude. Because of the way it works, the unrest in the province doesn't matter, so you can one one modest pop, high dom province (in your cap circle, say) as a free flag generator and churn out sacreds like they're freespawn.

Making it less obtrusive isn't necessary at all.
>>
>>161016534

The way I see flagellants is that you can use them in an innovative strategy similar to Pan's high turmoil builds. You fuck over your provinces, fuck your scales, give them some kind of monstrous bless and drown the world in W9B9 flagellants or something.

They are honestly not that bad, but you need to build around them.
>>
>>161017023
You need to fuck over only one province to crank them out my dude.

The third formation won't work for literally anything, regardless of the sliders. All that space will let the enemy from up and attack.

Formation 1 won't work if the enemy has a player hassling LMF/RMF AND a player shadowing LWF/RFW (which they will do) because due to the formation that will lock our all their pass chances.

Formation 2 will actually work with the right sliders.

You should take in to account that in football the players need to pass the ball to each other. Most of the distances seen in #1 and #3 are "longball" distances and "longball" is a meme for a reason.

Since you admitted to being new, here's a lil tip for Sceleria that you might not have run across yet: Build a temple in every province that lets you recruit priests. They can summon 3 skeletons/turn, which quickly pays for itself. Infinite skeleton hordes.

As for magic, Sceleria is very death-heavy. Hit enchantment 5 for Horde of Skeletons, Thaum 1 for communions (Communion slaves cannot act, but every 2^n slaves gives +n paths to the masters and they take some fatigue in their place). S1D1 can't really cast much aside from nether darts, but it becomes rather frightening once you communion it up.

your key tactics as sceletoneria is to spam undead via indie priests reanimating, and to otherwise just build mages that you use to communion together (thau 1) and cast Shadow Blast (Evo) (skeletons should be covered by reanimation) and then later Nether Darts(higher Evo). There's other stuff you do, but those tactics should beat the AI.
>>
>>161029813
>spam undead via indie priests reanimating
Honestly I don't endorse this. It's the meme sceleria strat, but it's usually better to invest in more infrastructure and mages. You can use thaumaturgs to refresh your undead in emergencies, but you will never fall short on chaff just by incidental animation.

I think that the best use of indy priests is to preferentially build forts on provinces that have them, put up the temple as you start building the fort, and then recruit the few indy priests that you get as your fort is going up. Longterm indy priest recruitment as some players have endorsed is a waste of gold.
>>
>>161026812
Here's some handy magic for Sceleria, most of it fairly low research.

>antimagic
Makes skeletons harder to banish.

>rigor mortis
Fucks over everything that isn't undead by sending them to sleep. This includes your mages.

>darkness
Makes everything which isn't undead awful at fighting.

>nether bolt/nether darts
Nether Bolt is decent, Nether Darts are amazing but high research. Spam them with your S1D1 mages.

>shadow blast
Amazing spell if you can get a communion casting it.

>>161030831
So what do you use for your troops? If you're recruiting human dudes, that takes away from gold from mages than having priests reanimate does.
>>
>>161031451
I still use skeletons for the most part. I just think that the indy-priest spam that people endorse is massively excessive.
>>
>>161031518
Well, at some point it clearly doesn't help any more, but in my opinion that point is when you literally don't have the space on commanders to lead your skeletons around.

Having a ton of skeletons is just useful in general. It means you can do stuff like 110g raiding/counter-raiding parties (cheap mage plus 60 skellies) or just drown the enemy in a few thousand skeletons each fight.
>>
>>161029525
>2 or more priests
Gonna need more than that, man. Just set them to repeat recruitment.

Another trick: Teleporting Arch-Theurges can claim thrones and cast high level spells. They're cap-only and don't have much map movement speed, so you can catch an opponent off-guard when they suddenly show up.
>>
>>161031697
The thing is that you get that without spending thousands of gold on priests. I would always rather have a thaumaturg than two priests and they cost closer to one and a half times as much. Sceleria is absolutely capable of spending all of its gold on mages, and if you have the safety to get the infrastructure that lets you do that, then I'd always prefer that to indy priests. Thaumaturgs can ALSO get you skelemen, but unlike priests that's not the only thing they can do.
>>
>>161032003
But using a thaumaturg to reanimate is wasteful (unless you want longdead horsemen, which are admittedly pretty nice). A indie priest is nearly as good, requires much less infrastructure (400g temple vs 1700 temple/fort/lab), and costs half the price+upkeep.

If you're getting much use out of the extra skeletons it's reasonable to go for more mages instead, but you should never want thaumaturgs reanimating over priests.
>>
>>161032281
>If you're getting much use out of the extra skeletons
That should say
>If you're NOT getting much use out of the extra skeletons
>>
>>161032281
The fact that thaumaturgs have better things to do than reanimate is precisely the point. It's 110 gold v 70 gold to get. The real difference, as you say, is the infrastructure which is, again, why investing thousands of gold into priests is a problem. I mean, shit, a scelerian acolyte is 45 v 70g and you don't get them because it's worth spending the 110 to get a thaumaturg instead.
>>
>>161032462
60 gold* sorry
>>
Anyways, I don't think that investing into indy priests is bad per se, I just don't think that it should be a default strategy compared to moar thaumaturgs but I see it consistently listed as a national strength. I think indy priests are something that you get while your forts are going up, but I think that you should try to also invest in forts and labs where you put your temples as soon as you can to get more mages instead of just priests.

>>
>>161032462
Lets ignore infrastructure costs for the moment, and just go off base gold costs.

Lets say player 1 recruits 18 thaumaturgs - 1980 gold. Player 2 recruits 1 priest for each thaumaturg he gets for a total of 11 of each for 1870 gold.

Let's also say each wants to reanimate 500 skeletons for combat purposes. H2 reanimates 6 per turn, H1 reanimates 4 per turn.

Player 1 needs to spend 83 thaumaturg-turns on reanimating. Player 2 needs to spend 125 priest-turns on reanimating. Let's say our timescale is over 12 turns.

Player 1 therefore has 12*18 (216) thaumaturg-turns, minus the 83 turns spent on reanimating, for a total of 133. Player 2 has 11*12 thaumaturg-turns for a total of 132.

That's a better result for player 1 than I thought would happen, but when you take into account infrastructure costs player 1 will lose for sure.
>>
>>161033373
Oh, I know why player 2 lost - total gold cost for him was significantly lower.

Give player 2 an extra thaumaturg to bring his gold costs on par with player 1 and he wins even when considering base gold costs alone.
>>
>>161033373
>>161033517
That's great, but the ratio of skeletons:mages that you want goes down as the game goes on and you rely on your mages to do more. You get 5 priests/fort anyways rather than the 20+ that keeping priest-only provinces gets you. In other words, you run into diminishing returns on the effectiveness of the additional skelemen that you get. Both builds can field hordes, but the build that spends more on priests can't do anything with them other than field hordes.

In other words, both have no trouble meeting the 500 or 1000 or even 1500 skeleton baseline that you want to get, but one then has spent money on getting yet more skeleton producers that it can't then use to do anything else.
>>
at the end of the day, I only have this to say: using mages that could be researching on reanimating instead is just plain dumb. It's also plan dumb that someone would think recruiting 3-4 indie priests a turn would interfere with mage production when a sceleria player IMO is expected to go massive scales since you don't exactly have anything worthy of a major bless (outside perhaps outside N9 for shrouding tarts or golems but that's tenuous decision at best).

yes thaums should take priority but I hope one would sacrifice an early fort or mage production just to get 1 more priest a turn.

>the ratio of skeletons:mages that you want goes down as the game goes on and you rely on your mages to do more.
Even though you're likely to use smaller armies in lategame you need a large number of skeletons coming in, because you're going to lose a lot to battlefield kill. Large numbers of mages together are not a good idea in lategame, so your skeleton:mage ratio should remain high too.

But, regardless of whether you agree, you don't need to keep making priests if you find your skeleton income is sufficient. If you stop making priests but continue recruiting mages and making more forts, your mage:skeleton ratio will go down. You can even make new thaumaturg recruitment centers on top of the priest provinces to reuse the temple.

I really wish I could say I would fight Lemuria to the bitter end, fueled only by my spite and sheer determination but it's just not fun losing to lategame Lemuria. I'll happily lose to any other nation, or in the first 50 or so turns in a game, but Ghosts, at least as far as this one has developed, are just on another level.

I will say that Lemuria did a good job of taking advantage of the situation they were in, especially since I think he didn't even want to sub in for them? Well done mate. I'll do my best not to be salty over how Caelum threw the game to you since I'm not sure that would've made much of a difference.

I assume Ulm is going for an Astral Corruption overcast and I guess we can hope that Lemuria's immortal empowered pretender gets detrimentally horromarked in the next 20 or so turns but are there any other glimmers of hope in this game? That's the Deep Dream. Google's massive neural network. In this image, it's been told to analyze an image for patterns and enhance them. The patterns it knows are based on images and their labels, it looks at things that are labeled the same and finds similarities between them. Among the most important and meaningful patterns to it are eyes, which is why they appear fucking everywhere in images where it enhances patterns, but other forms, biological, architectural, or geometric, are all are used as well, in proportion to the significance in images it finds. And it has access to any image that appears in google image search, which is pretty much all of them.

Fun Deep Dream fact: Recently, Google scientists have been teaching it about languages, hoping to improve google translate. They taught it to translate between pairs of languages, and then, to see what would happen, they asked it to translate from one language to another, directly, despite never having translated that pair before. It worked. They think this means it has created its own language or some such structure as a viable go-between, but don't actually know for sure.

Sneaky preacher preaching for a dominion with different temp scales might have a chance. Otherwise, rituals seem to be your go-to. Note that ritual spells happen before magic battle (or "magic-phase combat" whatever you want to call it)
http://dom4.wikia.com/wiki/Turn_resolution_sequence

Resistances do counteract the effects of fatigue from ill-matching temperature. If i remember correctly, 5 cold/fire resistance is enough for the fatigue to go away in cold/hot dominions.

Further note that resistances would have no effect on stuff like cold protection/heat power, and you'd still take maluses from being in the wrong temperature. A Niefel Jarl with Fire Resistance ~arbitrarily high~ in a Heat 3 province would still take a -3 malus to protection (from ice protection), but no extra fatigue.

Further also note: resistance spells cast in battle would counteract the extra fatigue as well.
>>
>>161054423
>Note that ritual spells happen before magic battle
Actually, the temp change rituals generate anonymous events, which trigger during the event phase (after battles)
>>
>>161054236
Yes. That's why I said you're overdoing it, not "your English is shit, fix it".
>>
>>161054423
Do these resistances work if a unit is cold-blooded? And also, most of the magic rituals that seem to affect heat and cold scales are considered events, which happen AFTER magic battle.
>>
>>161054489

Huh. fair point actually.

Looks like just sneaky preaching.
>>
>>161054534

Very early testing says no. An earth snake with W9 (so 18 cold resistance) in a Cold 3 dominion shows that it gets +10 encumbrance for being cold blooded. Notably the cold resistance does stop it from being affected by +2 encumbrance for severe cold.
>>
>>161054848
Thank you very much for testing this for me. Hmm.. if I have a turn until a magic phase combat and need to defend the province but have a bunch of cold-blooded casters, what would you suggest to use to counteract the effects of the temperature? I was thinking Relief, and spamming ice elementals might be good. Maybe even go cold resist and grip of winter?
>>
>>161054956
Also, any tips on dealing with Chayots?
>>
>>161055125
laugh at the person for summon a chayot instead of wishing for something more useful like a seraph.

Definitely will do. They summoned TWO. I want to crush them into the magical dust from which they were birthed.
>>
>>161054956
>>161054848

Testing some more, it looks like Cold Resistance doesn't offset cold blooded encumbrance. It will protect from severe cold though, which is some worth.

it depends? I assume you're c'tis, so skelespam? But otherwise sure, elementals are nice, and reinvig never hurts, though it will probably do little to save you from fatiguing out.

Sorta need to know what you're defending against, what you have, what you can get, what you can spend, etc. Is retreat an option? Pick your battles, friend. Provinces are cheap, a mage stack is not.

Shitty info gives you a shittier answer, as a rule, amigo.

>>161055125
What's the chayot have? I imagine an ungeared one can just be drowned in skeletons.

EA Xibalba vs EA Pelagia. I know a magic phase fight will happen on a level 3 throne province. If I claim the province, I win the game. I will likely be fighting a monolith, two Chayots, and a bunch of devils. I'm not sure what gear they have available as this will be the first engagement with this player (I've been at war with everyone else the entire game.)

I have: about 25 camazotz with skull staves, 2 onaqui with skull staves, 5 ah k'in kan ek' with skull of fire, maybe... 10 A2 mages. Plenty of all sorts of gems. My god is also here, kitted out but no artifacts, Teotl of Rain W9N4B5.
Conj 7 / Alt 7 / Evo 7 / Const 6 / Enchant 7 / Thaum 1 / Blood 7. World is in constant darkness.

Available paths for magic phase are sans battle boosters are: F3A2W9E3S2D4N4B7

I cannot retreat before magic phase except with my air mages, sadly. And it's sort of an all or nothing move. I have plenty of mages elsewhere, but this is all I can get in the province prior to magic phase.
>>
>>161055849
Also, I have about 3 vampire lords also kitted out with shrouds, magic resist, brands, and vine shields.
>>
>>161055849
>>161055919
The important thing will just be killing his pretender. You need a lot of AN or smasher like gear to break that monolith. Air elementals can do the trick if he doesn't give it lightning resistance, but odds are that he will if he's seen what's on that throne.

Massed water elementals can chip away at the monolith as well and are likely to pound through the chayot, depending on how they're geared/scripted. The chayot will rout at turn timer, though, and will also die to just leech spam, whereas the monolith won't die to either.
>>
>>161056107
Got it. I was originally planning to spam skeletons and elementals and use my god to throw up some battlefield enchantments like relief/serpent's blessing/foul vapors. Could also communion with blood and use leech, like you suggested. I have a flambeau, but no smashers or anything like that. I think using the cold 3 against my opponent with ice elementals and grip of winter might be interesting.
>>
>>161056305
The problem with all of that, though, is that the monolith will just last through to turn timer and your army will rout.
>>
>>161056107
Oh! Although, I will note the province generates a ton of dominion, and already has 4 friendly candles - may make the monolith easier to take down?
>>
>>161056485
It keeps the amount of HP that it had from the province it teleported from. It will have lowered max HP, but that won't matter until next turn.

Also, even if it has only 50 hp, if you can't reliably hurt it at all it doesn't matter.
>>
>>161056363
Does defending army auto route, or attacking?
>>
>>161056558
Attackers rout first, but the monolith is immobile so it can't. This means that its rout timer isn't until the very end of the battle when non-mindless things start melting.
>>
>>161056630
Thank you. You've been a wealth of knowledge. I could spam opposition from my one astral mage there, but that's about it.
>>
>>161056760
you have a few tools - incinerate if you manage to get your mages in range somehow, air elementals if it doesn't have LR and they survive the demon/chayot phase, even water elementals will get some chip damage in. Opposition has the same range problem as incinerate. Really the only reliable way to clear monolith type chasses is with magic duel spam if they don't have S7+ (which I imagine it does) or with specifically geared thugs. The tactics that you mentioned should clear the chayots, but honestly leech is just amazing against most anything he might throw at you that isn't lifeless.

Frost also has a 30% block chance. That's good v. Chayote.

I'm firing it up around thirteen hours from now. It'd be sooner but I need to test out a new map, alter the settings for 9 players, and pick out some guys of my own. I'd do some customization too but I haven't seen any calls for it so I'll avoid having everyone download a new version of the mod for now.

If anyone else in interested, our NationGen game still has twelve nations to pick from. Three of them are the ever popular Foulspawn, and according to an anonymous commenters, at least one of them is hiding some formidable power under all those tentacles. There's also a few other standouts like the mantis riders of Zim so hopefully anyone will be able to find one worthy choice.

I have found a very strange bug, lads.

This mage cast Enslave Mind. He is an E1S1 and not a Communion Master. Enslave Mind is S4, so this should not be mechanically possible, but the AI cast it.

Not only was there no other mage with that name, so I know that he was the one that cast it, but there was no mage in the battle that could cast Enslave Mind.
>>
Second strange bug -

A D2 mage shows Rigor Mortis as legal with only 2 D gems. I need to test if he'll actually cast it, but if he does then clearly gem usage is fucking up paths atm
>>
Third strange thing that might not be a bug, but is still noteworthy - a tartarian went mad while sieging an enemy fort and razed their temple.
>>
Fourth thing which is definitely a bug -

In two of my games, I have things in the HoF that don't have a heroic ability.

>>
>>161064472
Sum1's github page has a place where you can report errors.
>>
>>161064503
Summod doesn't have any code that could cause these bugs. Enslave is still an S4 spell, for instance, and it doesn't change any heroic traits or otherwise mess with the HoF. Most of the units in HoF that don't have heroic traits are completely unmodded as well.
>>
>>161064551
Was this SP or PBEM? If it was PBEM, those could just be replay errors caused by linux.
>>
>>161064762
I assume that you're referring to the Enslave Mind thing with this. It's not a replay error because
a) those are caused by the local client processing things differently, which would still require that my game think that an S1 mage can cast enslave
and
b) the unit in question WAS successfully enslaved with no mages on the enemy side that should have been able to cast it.

If you don't have uses for infinite chaff, you're a camper playing a camping/diplo-focused game. While great, that's a caveat you need to add to your posts 'I have no use for lots of chaff because I don't fight hard wars and instead vulture off noobs'. It's a valid tactic, but it's not the way most people - especially most new players - play.
>>
>>161066972

Chaff is called chaff for a reason.

Two thousand skeletons and twenty thousand skeletons are exactly the same in the eyes of Rain of Stones.
>>
>>161067278
2000 skeletons simultaneously attacking 10 different provinces would still be pretty nasty though.
>>
>>161067358

Fair point. And yeah, it's definitely very useful to have for early game and midgame. But by the time you hit lategame you're gonna need to have transitioned to Tarts/Blood, because anything that can't survive getting shit dropped on it Turn 1 is going to have a bad time.

Athough it should be said: Even in lategame, mass chaff is alright for fort holding. You need ten times as many skeletons as living guys for siege defence, but achieving that isn't difficult as Sceleria.

>But by the time you hit lategame you're gonna need to have transitioned to Tarts/Blood, because anything that can't survive getting shit dropped on it Turn 1 is going to have a bad time.
Stuff which can't survive getting RoSed turn 1 is still very useful for defense - few armies can beat 2k skeletons buffed up and using rigor mortis. Skeletons can even be useful on the offense (in smaller groups) because they're so cheap and because most nations can't just put RoS traps in every province they own.

You're going to need skeletons for siege too, so you need to bring those skeletons into enemy territory somehow

That's not to say you don't want tarts (or blood, if you can get it), both fill a number of roles skeleton hordes are bad at. But they don't replace skeleton hordes, they supplement them.
>>
>>161067521

Well if you're putting twenty thousand (or even two thousand) chaff in the same province, you're just bad, and shouldn't be giving advice. The point of having chaff generation en-masse is that the enemy kills your 500 skeletons in one battle and hey, you have more, you don't need to wait a bunch of turns to generate more from precious thaumaturgs.

Lategame is not an excuse. You cannot get to tarts quickly enough that you get to ignore earlygame and midgame advantages, unless you're on Easy or Very Easy research. Even then, huge piles of mindless chaff will defeat the vast majority of tartarian SCs or indeed many lategame tactics. They require a specific counter.

Overall nothing you're saying is making me particularly confident in your opinion.

Indie priests get you skeletons, and unless you're playing a diplo focused 'only stomping, never fighting' strategy you will need to abrade skeletons quite regularly as they die to provide cover for your thaumaturgs who are doing the damage.
