Suwa War Edition

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Our NationGen game is on track but I want more responses to the poll. In particular, I need more responses to the optional question so I can zero in on the problem nations. So figure out what nations you like, take the poll, and then get ready for some good ol' fashioned ethnic cleansing.

docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdJ3gztsJwhzHnQ_pHXrU2XXzejR3hM26Ruwww-qQQM0i_UJQ/viewform

You'll also find links to the nation packs within. We're up to fifty-something for anyone curious, and when this is all said and done, I'm looking at having twenty or so for the final compilation. That's hopefully more than enough for anyone to find a favorite.

Gakand, Sithis, Vitammen, Murmar, Sosunmori, and Kharis all have votes. Our packs can be found in that link or through this pastebin:

http://pastebin.com/CEdrsdJS

Pack One contains Abyss, Amazon, Apes, Atlant, Birds, Non-Existent Flying Monkeys, and Foulspawn. Pack Two contains Hoburg, Ichty, Illit, Lizard, Pale, Pygys, Snake, and Vae. Pack Three contains an extra Atlantian, Advanced Humans, Caveme, Ogres, and Tengu.
>>
>>160646615
I just voted for the guys I wanted to play and two random ones because I needed to pick one from each section.
>>
>>160646615
You should strongly consider first having people pick their nations and then making a mod that uses only the chosen nations.

This lets you have a mod that's as small as possible for Llamaserver and also lets you inject stuff like customized lore.
>>
>>160646868
Is there a good way to do that without creating a Steam or dom4mods thread?
>>
>>160646951
You could do it here, but then you'd be stuck waiting forever for the dude who called a nation and didn't make a pretender and have to deal with the pranksters taking nations that they didn't claim.

But aside from that, you don't need another thread.
>>
>>160647029
I'd prefer the poll so late comers have a smoother time. The number of responses, however, isn't quite what I was hoping for. I may change tactics, and possibly select a nation of my own, if things don't improve.
>>
Is there a trick to uploading the .dm into the inspector? I can't seem to get it to show me all the mages at once, only either half.
>>
>>160648934
The poll thing doesn't work since people often have just one nation in mind and also people just don't use it because I've literally never seen it done before for any game.
>>
I'd play a natgen game again but only a blind one. People dumpster-diving 40000000 nations just seems to result in the same problem I have with magic - someone finds some turn-3 win and the game stops being fun.
>>
>>160649357
The dudes I plan on playing dont seem especially strong to me.
>>
>>160649357
That's why the admin pregens the nations. The ones where people make their own look like that, but here we all see them and if anything's op we can point it out.

Like every other good, horrific admin out there, I've suddenly changed my mind.

We're scrapping the poll and switching to anonymous calls. Reply to this post or any subsequent posts like it, call TWO nations that you'd like to use, and I'll add them to our final nation compilation. I need TWO nations on the off chance that someone snipes your nation during pretender submission OR if I decide to not add it for some rational reason. If you don't give me TWO nations then I may decline your call so be sure to reply with TWO choices.

The following nations have already been submitted and will not need a call: Gakand, Sithis, Vitammen, Murmar, Sosunmori, Sogun, and Kharis. That leaves 18 more slots.

So good luck, good hunting, and may you all end up with the nations that you desire.
>>
Can I submit my own nation to the nationgen or do I have to pick one that admin gives?
Or is it too late altogether?
>>
>>160651332
I'm not comfortable with taking nation submissions.

You have fifty-three to pick from so hopefully something catches your fancy.

There is this new service called google at www.google.com that you can use to search different things from the internet. Sounds crazy, I know. Go to their webpage, put "betterarena dominions mod" (without quotation marks) to the field and press the "google search" button. You will then see a list of different webpages, which will help you find what you are looking for.

Alternatively, check https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-jNQgOwI-Q_Z2VSZGpSVlZkX2s/view but only if you are not afraid of viruses.
>>
>>160653043
>>160653714
That's not normal at all. Are you running other mods at the same time? You'll likely have a ton of ID conflicts if you activate more than 1 pack or maybe even something like summod. This could be the cause of the strange behavior.

To make sure it's working properly, check your nation against its preview image.
>>
>>160651206

High scales
High Bless
Blood
Endless Chaff (Freespawn, reanimating and rushing Enchantment 5 with Death)
Early game rush followed by levering the advantage
Staying isolating until you can cast multiple very nasty globals rituals, forcing the other players to leave the game.

You can easily sort all par few of the nations in the game to each (or many) of the appliciable categories. The unsortable nations are invariably shit, Oceania etc.

MAPangea can take High Bless for White Centaurs, High Scales for excellent troops or even switch scales around for another form of High Scales, generating Maenads.

MAAgartha in your scenario would want a modest bless if they intend to use their sacreds and High Scales to boost early expansion/mages/research.

I gotta be honest Lemuria, the fact that your income is still in the ~3000 range is the most worrying part of this graph.

Thought to be fair, you're close to having fort+temple is literally every one of your provinces instead of just most and at that point your income will matter substantially less.

I'm okay with ending this shitshow right now, if you all agree. I'm going to cast 3-4 armageddons for the next turns anyway, and I have a conjuration 20% site for infinite tarts. Basically, any province I conquer will give me +1 death gem (with dominion), and my freespawn is infinite. I can craft any item in existence, and the only possible counter to me (blood) will be extinguished by the inability to bloodhunt. There's still passive slave income sites, but who cares.

Make it easy for me yourself, and you won't have to suffer the usual late-game blues.

TNN has the best recruitable assassin in the game, the only nation that can natively kit their ponymen, and a decent sacred - not vanhere tier, but at the level of Helherdings easily.

They also have reliable A4 from capital (1/8 turns on average). They're hardly OP, but they're certainly better than many nations even after getting 0 buffs in summod (Machaka, Ur, Oceania, C'tis, Hinnom, probably a few others).

Those foulspawn are sure popular, huh? Between the calls and poll responses, it seems like everyone wants to get their tentacles on them. Then again that could just be overlap.

In any case, those four are so popular that I'm just going to go ahead and announce that they've made the cut. This means that you better hide your daughters and farm animals because Ondta, Gakand, Lomix, and Caevie, will soon be on the prowl.

Unfortunately, that means I may have to delay our start. The compilation feature of NatGen changed three of the four foulspawn nations the first time that I ran it. I suspect that this time won't be different. I'll thus have to manually add these guys, and while I sort of know how to do that, I've never actually tried that before with so many entries. There's a real chance that I won't be able to get it working by Monday evening but there's also a good chance that it'll be piss easy thanks to forbidden IDs so keep your fingers crossed. I'll keep you guys posted.

On the bright side, I'm also still taking calls. Just remember to reply to this or that other one with TWO nations. Anything more or less and your choices may just get redlined right out of the game. Good luck!

The Foulspawn codes aren't that simple. When they're changed from something like montag 1000-1004 to montag 1005-1009, new names are generated and a host of other changes take place. Caevie, for instance, had its sacred Just Scout switched with a brand new set of sacred Elite Ranged Foulspawn.

I owe you guys a chance to get the nations that I promised so stuff like that can't fly.

>>160700631

Got a couple of questions
I picked Demilich because fuck yeah liches but I have no idea what do starting magic schools do, so I put all of them at 1. I fucked up didn't I? Can I raise them ingame? And do they help outside of combat?
Also, I noticed the Awakened, sleeping or imprisoned options for your god. If I chose Awakened, should I use the Pretender to conquer shit or what? Right now he's sitting in my city researching and forging.
>>
>>160701531
>>160701823
That's very easy but wouldn't I still have to go through and manually change the IDs?

>>160702525
>Awakened to conquer shit
That's generally the plan but you picked a pretender that can't easily move.
>>
>>160702525
Well, the short answer is that yes, you fucked up. A demilich is immobile, so all it can do for you right now is research. Depending on what nation you're playing, it can at least get you a leg up on your research, and you can just use your national troops and mages to beat the AI. In general, though, you want to specifically take magic paths to let you make certain items, cast certain spells, or provide a bless (a benefit to sacred troops based on the paths you chose on your god). While you can increase the paths with empowerment, it's very rarely a good idea to do so.

Welcome!
Yes, that was a bad idea. You can Empower the unit (kind of an eh idea) by clicking its order (on the left, by the icon) and selecting Empowerment. It's more expensive to put it up to level 1 than it is to go from level 1 to 2. This permanently raises it at a gem cost. You can also craft any of a bazillion items that boost its magic paths while the item is equipped.

Magic paths outside of combat let you cast ritual magic (click their order on the left as before, click "Cast Ritual Spell") and craft items (if you don't have the minimum level or path, you can't make specific items)

Awakened gods are generally used to smash shit early on, and are used when nations have otherwise poor expansion capabilities. Some strategies also might use them to reach certain research goals very fast (especially if they have research-buffing abilities like Inspiring Researcher). Dormant gods are for if you don't need a god right away (frequent) but still want one soonish (say, to war with after you have basic gear made for it), imprisoned are for either really late game or "I don't really need it."

Learn the hotkeys (click "?" at any screen), and be prepared to read a lot. There's a ton of shit and it'll be confusing, but it's beautiful. Our wiki in the OP might be of some help, the manual is mostlyish accurate.

Beat up the AI a few times to learn the basics of the game, then join a multiplayer game and prepare to lose terribly. Ask us for anything you need.
>>

>>
>>160704794
They're a bit complicated, but they do two things - everything they use is sacred, so they enjoy having a big bless, and they have special summons that use blood slaves. Some of these summons are awesome troops (ozelotls), others are amazing asassins. They're a blood nation and a sacred nation. Just theorycrafting at this stage, though I hope to test it out soon. Leech is Fatigue 100 though, you can't machine gun it like you can soul slay, meaning that if your initial cast doesn't kill your target immediately (anything with high HP like giants or tartarians) your dude is likely to die. Soul contracts summon devils, which aren't stealthy though?

Okay, here's the Ermor lore in Dom4 (which is different from Dom3 lore).

In EA, Ermor conquered the world and all was well. Then there was this prophecy that the Emperor was going to doom the empire, so the lads that predicted this tried to overthrow the emperor with his twin brother. Just as the rebels were about to capture the capital, the emperor had his augurs drop a superweapon which nuked the empire, creating MA Ermor. The rebel offshoots created Sceleria, and were basically the result of people who predicted the zombie apocalypse gathering together all the priest mages that they could to fight it.

>>160717659
Oh, and Mari/Pythium/Ulm all were part of Old Ermor and split off after the cataclysm. Sceleria and Pythium both made a claim to being the real empire, but Mari and Ulm were just their own kingdoms based on the preexisting conquered peoples that were kinda 'modernized' by Ermor or whatever you want to call that
>>
>>160717423
Basically Thaumaturgs foresaw the Cataclysm and lead revolt against the Emperor in order to prevent it. However, when the rebels (Sceleria) marched against Eldergate, Augurs formed a communion to defend the capital but they fucked up and things got spooky as foretold.
>>
>>160717783

Meanwhile, C'tis looks on and quietly shakes it's head.

They told 'em. They told 'em about death rituals bro.
>>
>>160718058
Oh yeah. Ermor got its death magic (both for the thaumateurgs and for the augurs) from C'tis, which they had sorta colonized. The lizards were like "Screw humans, you ruin everything" and then the miasma happened which may or may not be related or intentional.

Actually I have no idea what Machaka's armies are like. I've only been watching Hinnom v Kailasa and idk how to take out either of their forces.
Hinnom uses a fatigue neutral Ba'al that he probably got out of a let's play and Kailasa uses a big dumb rock with 283045283085 hit points.
I didn't really have a game plan, plus my research is lagging because my researchers are mostly insane, I'm out of money and my fire gem income sucks. But at least if someone attacks the throne I can put 2000 polypal spawns in that fort. I think I fucked up by going all in on polypal spawns in the early game since it turns out they're useless and damage capped to 1 so even if you cast big buffs they're still utterly worthless and just route your mages when they die. I got the idea from playing Ermor in single player but Ermor's skellies don't run away and do more than 1 damage. Whoops.
I already met both my game objectives (don't die first & put up a silly global spell) so I don't mind sitting in the sea waiting for Master Enslave or Wish. But if I smell blood in the water there's always golems and skelly spam.

Empower your highest astral mind Lord and start making mind vessels.
>>
>>160724319
It's not. The first o in chthonion represents the vowel from "dog", and the first o in onion is the vowel from "fun". Also you should technically pronounce the c even though most people don't.
>>
>>160725751
Why empower? The spell is only S3 iirc. I have a lot more S than 3.
Also does it not affect just the caster? I haven't cast the spell because I didn't see the value in turning my higher research value fish insane.

I always see Jomons with no research late game and I never understand why. Their paths aren't THAT awkward and their mages are decently efficient at research. Unless people are recruiting just the StR ones from year 1.
>>
>>160757848

Jomon's paths are very awkwardly placed on their mages, and their samurai are not good for how much they cost in gold and res. They mostly seem to exist via being on the right side of dogpiles - jomons that do too well too early get dogpiled and jomon doesn't have the paths or units to survive that. So it's mostly that natural selection selects for Jomons that are safely small and bad to survive into midgame/lategame.

I guess that guy's family were Wood Elf Archmages at some point.

Hey, MemeThrone players. Altdorf has recruitable units that summon knightly orders, and due to the way that works, they don't pay Rescost for those knights, just gold. If you send me gold, I can turn that into prot-23 super-knights and rush Khorne before his Juggernaught Tidal Wave is ready. I've cleared a path to him, all I need is something able to kill Khornate Warriors and the knights reliably do it. If you send me enough gold, all we'll need to worry about is skaven.

The lesser orders cost 1000g for the unit that summons them. The greater orders 1500g. 4 total orders to summon, and extra summons of them give extra units (but no new grandmasters). My non-chaos neighbours have my word that I won't invade them - this is purely to remove overpowered bullshit from the game.

>>
>>160759304

You can elemental spam with the shugenjas. Toss up buffs on the samurai. Maybe build a really tiny communion to put up certain buffs. You can't do any of it well and all the extraneous paths are still useless.

Ryujin are your only good mage and VERY expensive AND hard to get. The flying, though, means you can move them around to important battles and get more use from them. Their best use is.. usually elemental spamming.

Dai Tengu can give air and are your best summon for that reason. Nation isn't very strong overall and it can do things but it costs more and does them slower than other actually good nations.

>>
>>160759892
Generally, human-sized pretenders are only suitable for crafting/summoning/sitesearching. Both Great Sage and +1 pearl Enchantress are okay choices for a pure crafting rainbow, but Great Sage shines when you have a lot of low-cost mages that you can move to your capital. I can see Sceleria or even LA Ulm going for Magic 3 and great sage bonus.

Additionally, Great Sage or Neteret are your choice to go for turn 12 BoT as MA Ermor or Lemuria. But don't do that unless you're playing a non-summod game, then destroy the filthy kafirs SUMMOD AKBAR!

Seeing the Happy Lemur's battle reports and the thread in general about that game makes me want to try out an aggressive Lemuria strategy. I've never played a popkill nation before, and the inability to make mages (or troops for that matter) has me really nervous. What do I need to do to make sure I have a good start? Also, what's a good Lemuria pretender for fighting an early war like that?
>>
>>160761968
Put ghosts in a blob, point blob at enemy. This will kill 90% of players. It's not hard at all.
>>
>>160761968
speaking as a more traditiona lemuria and compared to this lemur basically you agument your ghosties with crossbow indies, even with shit scales he wa still able to get a decent amount out. If you have a noob neighbor rush him immeditably (like jomon and mictlan). It pins down on the matter that it's sum1mod Lemuria so the faster expand=more candles=more D1 sites=more gems for lemurs. However keep in mind a hyper agressive lemuria will land you in a global war as you see in degenercy so if you can't handle a 3-5 front war itmight be too much. One thing to keep in mind is your ghost chaff make great disposable raiders that you can just throw deep into the enemy lands

RESULTS OF TESTING THE LA ULM GEARED MASTER OF THE SECOND TIER ASSASSIN QUEERS

Relying on soul slay spam with just a starshine cap, armour of knights and black heart results in about a 20% chance of being killed by an indie commander, and about a 50% chance of losing to anything with MR 15+. This is Not Good.

Adding a spell focus helped somewhat, but not enough to warrant the extra gems.

Using just the black heart and armour of knights, kitting him out with 30 blood slaves and spamming leech has a 100% success rate against everything with HP 100 or lower, meaning that This Kills The Thug. However, I tested this setup against stauncher stuff like ungeared Tartarians, and that had a 100% failure rate. The blood slaves act as an effective ablative shield, and help the soul slay spammers as well

Using a hybrid of the two, with a black heart, a starshine skullcap, armour of knights and 30 blood slaves, scripted to spam leech until the last round where he casts a desperation soul slay. This gives him a 100% success rate against all the usual thug chassis, and a slightly better outlook against SC chassis. That's 160 gold, 5 earth gems, 10 astral pearls and 50 blood slaves per assassin. Not cheap, but when you consider that this has so far been a sure kill against all the ungeared (and even a few geared) thugs i sent against it, it's a pretty decent investment.
>>

>>
>>160735929

Sy pls go and stay go
>>
>>160761968
Some pointers: I HAVEN'T found a better pretender than Lich Queen. You can try going doggo or other SC-like chassis, but Lich Queen gives you sitesearching, late-game diversity + immortal supercaster.

Research goals: Ench 5 (revenants for early research, skelespam; crucial for early-midgame, otherwise you gonna get banished to hell and absolutely useless against MRN 13+ troops), Evo 5-7 (Shadowblast, Wind of Death, Wailing Winds), grabbing Const 4 along the way/after.

You only need to summon a Lemur Thaumaturg ONCE to cast infinite revenants, then go for maximum Grand Lemurs.

Lemur Centurions (or whatever the 5 gem dudes are called) are excellent thugs.

Skelespam + Shadowblast wins you all early-midgame wars without losing ghosts.
>>
>>160762427
That said, competent players will counter your early-game rush pretty easily, so you better expand, turtle, and win due to infinite freespawn and a shitton of death gems.
>>
>>160762141
HOW I PROPOSE THEY BE USED:

I was playing against myself, and found that the most annoying thing they did was sit in my cap and kill my expensive STR mages. Sitting in thug producing provinces and killing them as they got summoned, or killing the summoners also stung hard. Discovered that D4 liches summoning Tartarians go down a lot easier than the Tartarians themselves.

Thug chassis I tested them on: Bane Lords with brand, vine shield and winged shoes. Also tried some others, but not enough for statistical relevance. Wishing is expensive and tiresome.
>>
>>160762257
Summod Lemuria's ghosts have MRN-hard, so you need fewer romans to expand. They do a hybrid of the standard Lemuria 2/3-centurian-square expansion (they still use it, but they can spend fewer gems on it since they have less) and ghost expansion parties that pretend to be romans.

>>160762427
Summod Lemuria's acolytes or w/e they're called are actually really good too. Half the cost of a Lemur Thaumaturg and either D2 (skellyspam/shadowblast) or D1S1 (com slave/nether darts). They cost half as much as a thaumaturg.
>>
>>160737332

Antimagic helps a lot

As does chaff that you can lose. Against blood vengence mictlan, recruit a boatlod of indie archers. Cheap, and you can lose them to Jaguars.

Spells that leave an effect like fire cloud and ice cloud, do not trigger blood vengeance on the mage.

I BELIEVE that AOE effects from stuff like fireball and magma eruption don't either?
>>
>>160762693
But you actually hit 40 to 50 provinces? You'd need 2 ghost expansion armies every 3 turns to match vanilla lemuria.
>>
>>160763148

>>
>>160762141
>>160762501
Seriously, just use the leech thing. The goal with this sort of thing is always efficiency, and spending a ton of gems gearing them is, well, not that.

If you want to assassinate tarts, don't use a second tier guy. Use a specialist. One such expert is a vampire with a Just Man's Cross and lifelong protection or a bottle of living water. The elemental/imps hold up the tart while the crossbow kills it. Another option is a vamp with boots of quickness and a holy scourge, but that's a lot riskier since some tarts will one shot it. You want +def gear to make it less likely to get whacked, and even then you're liable to lose it eventually.

>>160763148
No, it's not quite as good as vanilla, but it's still decent. I'm just saying you don't end up with 1/3 of the number of expansion parties or w/e since the ghosts are now better at it.
>>
>>160762315

It's cute that you think that's complicated. That's a well-organized lategame without much going on, for an active war. I spent 3 hours on my last lategame turn.
>>

This made me laugh for some reason, and your description made it even worse. Your 'expert' is literally a vampire assassin with a crossbow that hunts giant undead monsters. Now I can't help but think of some mary-sue pseudo-noir vampire edgelord.

I was scripting about 15 armies, some of which had to coordinate with teleporting units.

I also had to make a lot of decisions about gem expenditure, movement, some guesses as to enemy movement, and then I had to evaluate the feasibility of a fast throne rush from the position. Plus, a neighbour lost a major battle, so I had to form a bunch of new forces from new recruits and figure out how to fight a new enemy who is similarly-lategame in tech.

If I was testing properly it could have taken longer. this isn't even a meme game.

New player with a few questions
I tried going to that invisionfree site for mods but it's like the site is offline for me at all times, and there doesn't seem to be any other site for mods, what do?
Does province defense do anything when your enemy tries to conquer a province? I mean, do those soldiers you hire for patrolling actually participate in a battle once the enemy attacks? In the few hours I played I didn't have to face any of that yet, I only had to kill the forces stationed and related commanders to conquer the province.
>>
>>160777310
invisionfree, dom4mods, and steam are the best places for finding mods. Join the discord chat and chances are someone can scrounge up the mod for you. Province Defense defends the province when they try to conquer it. Always buy PD, as a 0PD province can be conquered by a single scout. PD replenishes after each battle.
>>
>>160777669
Thanks for the answer
>invisionfree, dom4mods
Sorry, aren't those the same site? Google gives the same results. Anyway I do not have access to steam mods (I assume there's a workshop or some such) because I have a pirated version cause I'm poor as fuck. However I'm really liking the game and will buy it when I can but I will probably have to wait for a sale.

>I mean, do those soldiers you hire for patrolling actually participate in a battle once the enemy attacks?
Your questions were answered but I think it's worth pointing out that province defence should NOT be purchased for patrolling. As patrollers, they're extremely inefficient (and you'd need to invest 15 points to get even a single point of patrol strength, which is already a bit expensive). Patrol strength is calculated based on precision and action points but generally speaking one human unit has patrol strength of around 1: a single unit on patrol command would be as efficient in finding stealthy troops as 15 province defence (120g) and 15 troops as efficient as PD of 25 (325g) and any realistic number of PD can't reliably find stealthy forces (for that you'd need 50+ patrollers and as PD that'd cost thousands of gold).

But anywyay, the reason to purchase PD is to prevent enemies from capturing provinces with a token force, not patrolling. 1PD is a must because otherwise a single scout can take the province uncontested (and opens up some events where it's reclaimed by independents). However, as PD gets increasingly expensive, there's a limit in how much of it you might want to purchase. PD of 10 (costs 55g) will likely stop a single commander with 5 troops (let's say that's 100g) so that may still be a worthwhile investment, but after that point it gets increasingly inefficient and you'll have a lot of your resources tied to static defence that will be wiped out by any committed assault. There are situations in which you might want to purchase more PD than 10 (such as laying a trap on enemy force you predict will move to that province), but at this point we're entering "highly situational" territory, and often times you don't want more than 1 (it also depends on the type of PD: on heavy cavalry provinces 10 gold gives you 3 cavalry+other defenders and that's a bargain, but militia for example are so impotent you might as well not bother).
>>
>>160780447

10 points for one point patrol strength, not 15.

Which can be worthwhile if you're bloodhunting, I guess? I wouldn't go any higher than that though, yeah.
>>
>>160780710
10 points is one unrest reduction (and for that purpose I suppose it's decent enough investment when blood hunting). However, patrol (for destealthing) only starts at 15PD.
>>
>>160780894

Oh. Right. Derp.

Right enough.
>>
The unrest reduction from PD is nice in that it doesn't cause pop loss the way that rooting out brigands does. The same is true for order scales and friendly dominion in general. That's why order scales are so useful for bloodnations - lower pop losses from the unrest patrolling you do.

I spent a long time agonizing over who would and who would not make the list. But then my lunch started to get cold so I just started picking at random. You'll hopefully find something decent in this mess. If you can't, you can still try to convince me something's unfair so someone else can be miserable. I'll probably listen if you string a pretty sentence or two together.

Anyway, I'll putting the game up in about 6 hours. That's 9 something on America's worst coast or 5 bong Brit time. There will be a download link included so you'll be able to grab the final mod then. Also, as I stated before, everything's first served. That means that you might've called X but I'm not going to do anything if you send in a Y pretender.

Good hunting!

>>160787051
It can be a pretty reliable defense when you're playing against the AI, in my experience, since its armies tend to consist of large masses of generic troops.

It's not such a good strategy against human opponents, though. Large armies of standard soldiers might look impressive, but they can be crushed with the right tactics, and then you've lost a lot of money and cost the opponent almost nothing.

>>
>>160787365
Are people going to submit lore for their nations, or is that not a thing we're doing?
>>
>>160788904
there is is a dispell spell but you need to try to guess the amount of gems the BoT caster use as only a dispell that uses more magid paths/gems then the original cast will successfully dispell the other global
>>
>>160789159
There's also a limited number of global spell slots (5) so if 5 are in effect, you could try to overwrite one of the existing globals (1/5 chance to pick BoT specifically) with a more powerful global of your own.

A player casting Burden of Time is usually committed to making it stay there so unless they're trying to trick you into using more gems on dispel than they used on initial cast and then recast with full force, the best way often is to kill the caster.
>>
>>160789508
ok so, i didnt run into any of this yet cause im too new but let's say i am playing vs MA Ermor and he casts BoT. what i can do is just
>try to dispel it by consuming gems and research / make a global of my own and hope BoT will 'fall off'
>OR gather my forces and make a rush for the caster wich will no doubt be behind castle walls guarded by 7000 skeletons, maybe with the help of some other nation
but at least MA Ermor is the only nation who could have interest in casting this spell right?
>>
>>160787154
eh. Machaka didn't fight Aspho's mage support, while Man did with less support of his own. I mean, you're right that Machaka came out better, but I would attribute that more to the resources used than scripting skill, if that makes sense.
>>
>>160790819
R'lyeh also likes to cast it sometimes. Just to be a dick.
>>
>>160790819
Pretty much yes. Also, you could send your pearls to someone else and have them cast the dispel for you, but that has its own risks.
>>
>>160790819
Some nations with long-lived units might also want to cast it just to fuck over the other players. But generally, Ermor and Lemuria are the most common suspects. Refer to >>160722473 for more information.
>>
>>160787365
Did you really cut all the Tengu and Caelian nations? I swear that I had 4 flyers as my interested nations.
>>
>>160790819
MA Ermor and Lemuria are the only nations who can reliably cast and recast it, but they're not the only ones who benefit from doing it. Any non-human nation fighting a human nation that actually has the gems and paths will want to cast it. I've seen a Helheim throw it down after getting invaded by both Abysia and Machaka.
>>
In general, BoT is a bit of a trap option. Used to be it would kill population at a quick enough rate that it could ruin the economy of anyone attacking you. That got changed though.

Now the commander aging is the most significant bit, and that's entirely possible to work around with blood or nature even if you don't have nonhuman mages/commanders that just ignore it. Mostly it just moves you to the top of everyones hate list.

orignally ermor's magic was S/F if you read the little lore of the pre-white shroud mages with a variety of minor magic paths with the numens. When the Religious reforms happened (ala Constantine) you had normal augers sticking to the S/F paths while the Auger elders made expeditions to C'tis to learn death magic because they received revelations that ermor would eventually fall and thought Death magic would save them from the collapse of the empire. In particular they were interested in the "ritual of death and rebirth" the c'tis practiced. As expected though this attempt to save themselves lead to a self-fufilling prophecy

Helter skelter, baby.

http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=WinterRaceWar

Our little NationGen game is up and running. 53 nations were submitted and now the top 20 are all that remain. Choose your favorite, give them a worthy pretender, and lead them to victory over all others.

The map and settings are all placeholders until I can get a better handle on how many players we'll have. I'm expecting about twelve based on our responses but I can't shake the feeling that our Top 20 reduced that a bit. In any case, I'm open to changing them right up until we start.

Also, you can start submitting your lore now.

Good hunting!

Forts pull resources from adjacent provinces in accordance with their Administration value.

Higher Admin is more resources pulled from neighbours.

This can be a reason to build fort upgrades, if you're a particularly resource heavy nation. This said, your cap already has all the upgrades, so your only option is taking any unowned capring provinces, if you don't already have them all.

I'm looking for thoughts on how to fight EA Ur as EA Fomoria in the late game when I can't devote dedicated armies to siege his forts I also dont have the air gem income/scouts to start winged boots prov raiding. Ur has a d9 bless for context and is moving around in 1 big stack as far as I can tell.
>>
>>160837035

Counter raid with druids/kings, or even just simple parties of glamour shit. that's a shitty bless, and if he has just one death ball then you can just ignore it while destroying his income.

Is there any reason why some Pretenders can't be selected by certain factions or in certain eras? I wanted to put a mod so all pretenders are unlocked any time
>>
>>160840048
Usually just for thematic or lore reasons.
>>
>>160837035
Dropping a SC on forts to prevent him from using them while you do other things can be a good tactic, especially if those forts are low on defenders.

If he's being dumb and running around with a doomstack, hit it with a couple casts of wind of death whenever he tries to attack anywhere with it and kill half his troops.

>>160840048
What >>160840098 said seems to be the reason behind illwinter's choices, but it also affects balance. Some pretenders are really good for certain builds, and not having those available forces nations into other choices.

It's an unrest causing spell. You use it to shut down cap production. This is rarely worthwhile because in dom4 stuff produces slowly enough that it's not of use to be shutting that down during a war.

But.. it is anonymoose. If there's a few people who could have cast it, or you have a rainbow god on a nation without normal astral, it can be used to remotely harass.

I have surrendered to fate. Having been pretty fucking rekt by Kailasa for the nth time, I think I must admit that i'm defeated. However, thank you everyone for the game. I've learnt a lot. Mainly from failing.
I've learned a lot more how to use thugs, heavy thugs, SCs of varying types. I've been forced to figure out ways to deal with army compositions i've never faced before and tricks i've never had aimed at me before. I've learned a bit of how to use a nation i've never played before.

So, genuinely, thank you to everyone in RubADub for a good game but my time is done. Good luck to everyone. But especially the squids, you dicks.

>>
>>160849835
Due to the way illwinter codes spells, ritual spells can be cast in battle. Mages just can't script them or choose to do so.
>>
>>160849835
Yes. It works in combat, though, similar to an insanely broken Horde of Skeletons.

Unlike Horde, though, which has a check to make sure that there's room on the battlefield before the mage casts it, this is an autocast spell. This means that it's potentially gamebreaking, because if it tries to summon things that would overfill the battlefield, the game crashes.

So, this game is finally over. I really enjoyed it during the first 40~50 turns but opponents other than Midgård didn't provide any credible opposition and with passivity of some players, the last stretch feels like an undeserved win. Since I didn't want to throw away this game unlike another one I started around the same time, I played very conservatively. I PROBABLY could have taken a fight to them myself and won 10+ turns earlier (from very early on I kept large reserves) but I opted to take the slower reliable route. I even started constructing temples en masse such that I'd win by domkill if all other options miraculously failed.

As for the game. Despite making quite large territory concession to some of my neighbours, my practised expansion paid off in dividence and when I myself ran out of indies, I was the largest player (Atlantis ultimately grew larger later, but since they were committed to removing cancer squids and probably couldn't have avoided it even if they wanted to, it was clear they wouldn't become a factor for a good while). I haven't got a clue what happened with Ragha but they ended up having 8 province expansion and even in Summod I thought they would become frightening later in the game so after taking 3 indie provinces I had promised them that they hadn't taken, I attacked Ragha alone. Turns out they DID have a lot of Zhaydeans and Turan War Elephants that my scouts had missed and I took quite heavy damage fighting them (several hundred losses total, although I always won cost-to-cost) but in essence it was a battle for their capital and with my far greater resources it couldn't have gone any other way. If Ragha is around, I'd really like to hear what went wrong in your expansion.
>>
>>160853951
However, as I was still sieging Ragha, the game came to the crossroads. Midgård had had #3 expansion (with wealthy provinces so in terms of gold they were even with me and Atlantis) and attacked T'ien Ch'i, in the process reaching me in size. From the beginning of the game, I was a bit afraid of them because I felt I didn't have a very good matchup (and I think the game did kinda confirm this in that I had extreme trouble assaulting their territory despite ultimately growing several times larger, in the end I didn't even bother finishing them off) so in my mind they always were my second target. Luckily Jomon had expressed similar concerns so, with T'ien Ch'i already fighting them (having been backstabbed while eating AI Utgård), it seemed an excellent moment to attack too.

The following diplomacy (or some players' stubbornness) determined the course of the game so I'm posting province graphs of me and Midgård with our victims singled out to make it more readable. It was the clash of titans and modest powers (Bogarus and Caelum) were in position to intervene and likely decide the outcome. The discussion about who was the biggest threat got rather heated even in this thread and I assume Midgård did a lot of in-game diplomancing (I also did some, my main argument wasn't the size or recent military success but tactical potential). Now that we do have the graphs, turns out they were rather even and zig-zagged quite a lot in the early stages of the war. I don't know if this was a factor in Bogarus choosing their side and Caelum ending up neutral (attacking Jomon that was, quite frankly, rather useless anyway) but Midgård's quite outrageous claims of my size were clearly wrong (they were right about forts, though).
>>
>>160853951
>>160854081
Whatever the case, probably the more important thing that graphs is the fact that tactically, I WAS WINNING. I think I shut down Midgård's offensive attempts quite well and, things eventually settled to a status quo in which Midgård no longer could mount an offensive and while they would have been an extremely tough nut to crack with defender's advantage in play, I probably could have finished the job if I had truly committed to the task.

I still stand by my initial analysis that it would have been in Bogarus' best interests to join the war against Midgård initially and while I was totally oblivious to this at the time, looks like they did choose their side. However, back then I was constantly worried about backstabbing action and kept large reserves at hand. When the scales tipped to my favour and Bogarus/Agartha definitely should have went after me instead, those attacks never came. And because Midgård's attempts to mount an offensive had ended, I decided to give up a costly attempt to finish them off and went after Caelum who had decided to attack Jomon.
>>
>>160854226
>>160854081
>>160853951
Caelum, clearly a new player as well, was unable to provide much resistance (they had only a couple of raiding parties the upkeep of which likely cost them more than the income they denied from me, and they never combined their forces in attempt to take me on). I quickly had Caelum and lockdown and finally went after AI Utgård (who I supposedly had conquered 20 turns earlier). At that point the outcome was a foregone conclusion. I started eating Midgård from the other side of the map, took the territory from T'ien Ch'i and then finally took a fight to Atlantis. They didn't provide any opposition either. Then I took the last thrones and won.

Finally, I want to say that Midgård really deserves credit for sticking in the game so long and trying to do something until the very end, also showcasing some nice tactics when we still had quite evenly matched battles. No offence but many other players would have been better off as AIs (and in some cases were) because the AI actually tries to fight.

Towards the end it was random chunks of whatever troops I had lying around, lead by a Pan set to cast buff spells because that's what it takes to mop up AIs. Before that point it was the same deal but with some thought put into scripting (against Caelum almost exclusively Satyr Hoplites, though, seeing as that crossbows aren't good against fliers) with several Panii, flame spirit for flaming arrows and 20ish centaur sages per deathball (with 8 communion slaves). It wasn't a very interesting fight to the finish to say the least.

Every single good player who i've talked to much has mentioned their job in passing. I mean, the neet-shame is a thing, but I don't know if any good players are neets. At the very least, a half dozen of the people who have lots of wins have jobs.
