Dont sound like a great option. Yes, everyone will try to give artifact once, just of curiosity, but there is no benefit to do so.
Sieges are fun and profitable, if you dont want them - you already can raise the bridge, they do not arrive before 80 citize, and you cant make necro/megabiest siege to go away with artifact i guess.
Just no reason to lose precious platinum bucket or fb bone crutch which you can display in your dining hall.
And what are you, an elf, to avoid the fight?
The only positive thing - maybe elves and humans will come too to demand an artifact, and you can war them without repeatedly attacking caravans.

Actually, the release that added night creatures (I've forgotten which one) was considered pretty spooky when it was first released. Much of the personal tragedies and the extreme body horror introduced was unheard of in the earlier versions. It made the game more dbleak, horrifying, dark and edgy.

Toady is quite literally the only one capable of doing this game justice. It's his game, and it's been manufactured to his creative vision. It would take another genius on par with Toady (yes Toady is a literal genius) to be able to do the same work that Toady has done.

Go ahead and think of any other game that has had this much work put into it by a single person. DF is literally one of a kind, and it's because of the genius and drive of a single man.

A whole team of developers couldn't hope to do what Toady has done with this masterpiece of a game, nor could they do his vision justice.

Its origin was as a collection of other peoples' mods. It has some original content now, but it's mostly still just a whole bunch of other peoples' work all jammed together with no mind toward thematic consistency. It's a poorly curated repository of bloat and feature creep. Meph, the curator, accepts donations for having put other peoples' work in a folder together, which he uses to perpetually vacation. The combination of its existence with the laziness of the mod using community has had a stifling effect on DF modding; masterwork has so much stuff from so many mods that many users start there and end there, and never explore the mods the work came from or look for more focused or thematic mods, and in turn modders face the decision of allowing Meph to cannibalize their work or having a far smaller audience for their mods.

So basically, if you want stuff just for the sake of stuff, and you don't give a shit where it came from or how you got it, play Masterwork.

Dogs started to bite and scratch cyclops, he tried to run away, cryed something like "someone, help me!", and at last passed out. Out of 100 rounds the human with the halberd won 57 times and the human with the two-handed sword won 43 times, they were both using steel weapons and armor and had no skills.

With legendary weapon and armor user skills the human with the halberd won 52 times and the human with the two-handed sword won 48 times.

The results are similars to the ones of the first two tests, and again, it's not possible to say if one of these weapons is superior to the other.

Most hits were deflected by the armor, some of them managed to damage through the armor though, and even if it is deflected by the armor, the force of the blow can still cause heavy damage.

Another thing I've noticed is that bites are really effective against armor, even if the attack is deflected, the attacker is still able to latch on and shake the opponent, and that can cause heavy damage, it can destroy nerve tissue and paralyze the opponent.

The flat attack and pommel attacks definitely need to be removed since they get selected in far too inappropriate situations.

When your weapon is as dense as balsa wood with an edge thinner than an atom's width, there is no time you would ever want to slap someone with it outside of trying to humiliate them.

It's why Picks are so brutal, the choices for a dorf are "hit it in the brain with the pick" or "punch/bite/kick/scratch/grapple" so they wind up picking the pick-to-the-brain option far more consistently vs slash/stab/pommel/slap/hand-to-hand situations.

Well, anon certainly has the right idea that removing the objectively bad flat attack would probably even out the numbers. 2-handers have 4 attacks, 2 of which are mostly useless blunt attacks, while halberds have 3 attacks, only one of which is a mostly useless blunt attack. Trimming them down so each only has the slash and stab attacks left would probably yield more useful information. Namely, whether a 100k contact/8k penetration slash attack or a 20k contact/8k pen slash attack is better. You might even remove the stabs, as the 2-hander's stab is slightly better than the halberd's. Further, using a race with NO_PAIN will go a good way to eliminating the first-to-score-a-hit rng bias, and just leave it down to who can dismember or bleed their opponent first.

You can copy - paste the attacks in each weapon to affect the probability.
For example you could take a sword and copy the slash 3 times and the stab once and you would have a weapon where a dwarf is far more likely to slash than anything else.

The only thing that doesn't fix is a dwarf's tendency to punch/bite/kick/scratch, though I believe holding an object makes them more likely to use that.

So, I've did some arena tests with a race that I've made.

They're humans but with horns and hooves, here is the raw, I hope I didn't fuck it up http://pastebin.com/DziJkRAC

So, out of 100 rounds the human won 59 and the huuman 41, they both had no armor, weapons or skills.

From what I've seen having horns and hooves doesn't really change things much, atleast not for humans.

When the human was exhausted the huuman kept goring him in the head, but it didn't seem to do more damage than a normal punch, same thing with kicking with hooves.

I still have to do more tests with good fighting skills and weapons, but those are the results of the first test.

If you accepted the task as a hearthsperson quest, you can just give a report by selecting that option from the "main" conversation page. I usually tell them the rumour as well, for extra cred.

Here's how the abstract map of the town looks in AV. IIRC, AV uses the world data to access the buildings on the site, as well as the materials used. Basically, this is the same level of detail that you get from the exported site maps.

Okay, I found them. They're a band of rodent men squatting in the catacombs. They proved to be more challenging than I thought. My adventurer got tired pretty quickly, and even then, they kept jumping me from all directions.

Sadly, I didn't get to kill their leader. She instead got killed by some other criminals a few rooms away.

Supposedly, there are like 50 different criminal groups making claims on the city, and it must be assumed that at least half of them reside in the dungeon and catacombs of the city itself. When exploring the underground, I happened upon the sites of numerous bloody gang wars.

Out of 100 rounds the human won 44 times and the huuman 56, the both had grand master fighter, striker, kicker, biter and dodger skill, and no weapons or armor.

With high biting skill the huumans managed to do heavy damage with the horn, but it's still not more than what a good punch would do at that skill level, kicks were powerful too but not more powerful than the kicks of a normal human.

RNG is a big part of fights and having horns and hooves doesn't change things much for humans, maybe for a race of bigger size it would change things more.

Guts is beyond superhuman tho, if you notice out of all the humans in berserk, Only he and Griffith have the pointy ears. He's akin to a warrior hero of legend, and is kind of aided by fate.

I'd like it if we could play that sort of character in adventure mode, and although we do have peasant/hero/demigod, the only bonus is better attributes and more points to spend on skill. It would be pretty cool if it raised the ceiling for power, or allowed us to receive the favour of some greater being.

I did some other weapons tests

Out of 100 rounds the human with the two-handed sword won 36 and the human with the long sword 64, they both had no skills and no armor.

With grand master weapon skills the human with the two-handed sword won 41 rounds and the human with the long sword won 59.

I guess since the long sword is a smaller weapon, it's attacks are faster, and that may be the reason why the human that used it won more rounds. That and RNG.

Maybe against larger opponents using the two-handed sword would be a better option?

I'm gonna make them use steel weapons and amor in the next test.

I was here. It wasn't all off topic, it was practically /dfg/'s golden age. We had more active posters than anytime except the months right after .40 released. The worst it got was the occasional thread-long arguments about graphics vs ascii and the rare threadly soul-searching over whether rtfw was the appropriate response everytime a newfag asked an easy question. Then .40 released, we were avalanched by new players, and most of the regulars left and never returned. I guess rockposting is kind of offtopic, but not to the degree of manga discussion. /dfg/ will be fine without it, and always has been.

Since there are no real threats here, it would be a shame to waste any megaproject potential.

My current plan is to build a massive museum of natural history. The museum will have to following features:
>exhibitions showing different (chained) creatures in natural environments (for example, I'll replicate the caverns simply by wetting the floor of the exhibition and waiting for plants to grow)

>a holiday resort where guests get the chance to rent rooms overlooking the landscape, the nearby mountain lake, a magma sea, the caverns, et cetera

>a great outdoor exhibition where guests can see the local geological stratigraphy
I'm accomplishing this by carving a huge pillar out of the lone mountain peak. There will be different stations on different heights where guests get the chance to have a meal while admiring the local geology.

I hope to accomplish this by mainly employing miners and animal caretakers/physicians as scholars. It'd be great to have an archaeologist or two, but for that, we'd have to go through history.

Toady is just months away from releasing the update that finally makes AI so life like that the game will truly become a fantasy story simulator.
Then scamps dies, which follows months of silence, a two year period where the update notes are all about creating scamps 2.0 in df. Then finally a update that makes cat people really fleshed out, much more than anything else in the game, which follows Toady's suicide as his life work is done.

Absolutely, DF aims to have interesting and unique beings in the stories it creates during play, and you really can't acomplish that without deep and complex psychology

One of the big branches of psychology would be romance, something we'll get to explore in the Love/Dinasties arc, and which will allow us to fall in love and make a family in adventure mode, everything of course with each correspondent menus/mechanics and UI

That's the point when Waifus will flood this general.
Think about it /dfg/. As players of this game, we are so used to see the DF as corky or dumb, and this has been happening since the beggining of the agme, because of its numerous bugs and incoherent AI, but these are slowly but steadily getting fixed and upgraded by Toady
With the next update, we'll get a big lump of AI, with the whole people's rumors and reactions to artifacts (based on personality), and npc parties on top of that.
Yeah, it'll be buggy as fuck, but it points out an important thing:
Toady is making/going to make the dwarves more complex with time, and that'll end in people getting non-ironically atached to dwarves, because they'll legit look realistic enough for us to do it

Out of 100 rounds the human with the two-handed sword won 38 times and the human with the long sword won 62 times, they both had steel weapons and armor and no skills.

I still haven't seen one of them grab the opponent's weapon or catch it while he's trying to attack.

Both of them didn't also try to remove armor parts, with one exception, sometimes if one of them went unconscious, the other would remove the helm and then attack his head, both humans did that.

Backstory. On an adventure to kill this titan. Isi, a bowman, and Ared, a swordsman, join me. We fight some wolves on the way but when we reach the shrine, Isi yells "It is terrifying" and runs away. I barely manage to kill the thing with the help of Ared who dies of his wounds. Then as I'm leaving, Isi comes back and this interaction happens. I expect we'll eventually have something to the effect of a time-lapse cutaway, similar to composing or constructing in adv mode now. Maybe even with some new skills, like flirter or lover. Half the community doesn't want it, improvements to the game are minimal, and the most important of all, Toady is apparently avoiding both subjects. Once he begins working in something related and feels like it, perhaps he will add shitting and fucking in his own "tasteful" manner.

If you can't live without the chronicles of Urist the scat masturbator, then either find a way to mod it in or bother toady until he does so. And remember that Dwarf Fortress isn't supposed to be a reality simulator.
