You don't have to. Having never played before, you're not going to notice the difference between a 150 year old world and a 250 year old world. And that difference won't be huge in most worlds anyway.

That's wrong. Civs are placed at the start of worldgen, and there will never be any more civs in a world than the ones placed initially.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. I'm talking about naming 'Elf 1' into a custom name in arena mode, like tourney anon was doing to the gladiators. In the combat logs, we see 'Coldsteel', not 'Hedgehog man 1'.

>>
Can buzzards carry dwarves? My planter was dragging something to the pasture and suddenly he found himself on the top of the building.

There are no stairs or any way to get up there, and now the buzzards won't let me finish building the ramp.

>>
>>160611532
Yes, those were 9dots.

>>160380624 is an example of timbukdrew's work. He does a lot of slice-of-life drawings of dwarves, and has been drawfagging here for longer than anyone. There's a lot of his stuff floating around. I would post some if I were at home, but alas.
>>
>>160612142
Cute, thanks m8.
>>
>>160611720
No. Carrying creatures isn't a thing that can happen. Dwarves can climb though, and one of the few ways to motivate them to do so is seeing something they want to punch or run away from. Wild buzzards being food thieves makes dwarves automatically hostile to them and enter a conflict state on sight. That's probably why he's up there.
>>
>>160610614
You can level up your knife user skill in adventure mode even without investing any points into it at the start. Just find a knife and start practicing on wildlife.
>>
>>160611532
9dots is active in the brony forums too. I think that when he discovered us he started liking us more than the bronies, he muttered his first words here and he does some ninja super fast autistic drawings on /r/equest which is super cool.
>>
>>160609910
I think if you start as an outsider you can put points into knife user at chargen?

Otherwise just take a knife and go stab some wildlife, you'll train up pretty fast.

I ran the test with the elfs and dwarfs again, this time everyone is at grand master and much more realistic results
Either side won the 10v10 but it seemed to slightly favor the elfs
In the 1v1 something werid happened. The elfs and dwarfs simply incapacitated eachother and could not fight any longer, but only one died. It was a complete stalemate.

You guys do realise that we were never supposed to eat sentients in the first place, do you? You couldn't in the older versions(0.34 and backwards). Being able to eat them was caused by a bug introduced in 0.40, which has now been fixed.
>>
>>160615085
What pisses me of is the fact that you cant carve the bones of a sentient anymore, yet in fortress mode i find sentient bone jewelry on migrants/visitors all the time.
>>
>>160615085
>>160615215
It's not that you're explicitly disallowed by the game, just that adv mode chars are restricted to the default ethics of their home civs, which don't even see the remains of sentients as food (except in some cases with elves, but those events only happen in worldgen). It's always been like that except for a brief period in .40 when Toady changed it without realizing, and then changed it back without realizing it in .42. He didn't even know that it had been changed (or apparently even that there was such a restriction) until someone asked him about it in a FotF. There probably won't be any intentional action on the subject until the crime and punishment arc codifies such actions in the context of the rest of the law framework.

World-Fortress Megaproject:
This project begins in finding a suitable world and embark site.
There are four major desired features for your embark site, Terrifying Sea (Reanimating), Joyous Wilds Sea, Tree access, and an infinite source of Magma.

The actual project:
Divide the two seas with your fort. Acceptable means of making this include pumping the oceans away from eachother in large enough volume to build walls from the ground up, and obsidian casting.
Additionally finding a way to construct it from the bottom up without clearing all the overhead water first is acceptable.

All tombs are placed on the reanimating side of your ocean bisecting fort.
You must bring magma into your fort to support a glass industry so you can construct an aquarium for each unique type of sea creature you see -- fill them.

The final tricks will be
A: animating all Joyous Wilds Seacreatures in containment.
B: creating 'science' chambers where you can demonstrate to visiting nations the interesting reactions that occur when you mix evil and good seas, evil water and magma, good water and magma, and don't forget to introduce the elf ambassadors to your Giant Sperm Whale Thrall

The annoying thing is that it forces you.
It's great to have more facets of the dwarven (or whatever) personality come to the foreground, but there should always be the choice.
As it currently stands, a creature could have every antisocial and psychopathic trait under the sun and still blanch at the idea of eating sentient meat.

I mean, even plump helmet man meat.

Ideally you'd run the risk of a mental breakdown or something, or being outcast by fellow civ members, if you chose to eat sentient meat. But you'd still (as a player) be able to.

Of course when you have a contest between unarmed opponents, Elves will always win since the only defensive skill is dodging. Elves have higher average agility, and dwarves have lower than average. Same goes for goblins

In a situation with weapons and armour, dwarves would not have to rely on their shitty agility for defence. Dwarves have superior toughness, so in a situation with armour and weapons, an elf or goblin would have trouble doing substantial damage.

gui/gm-editor df.global.world.entities.all[civ_id]

Open the name field.

This will pull up a screen with the words and word parts, you'll need to search for the line numbers to figure them out directly.
>>
>>160628830
I meant search the df/raw/objects/language_RACE.txt files, subtract six since it has six extra lines at the top.

So words listed as 1906 in the entities.all[k].name.words part will be 1912 in the txt file.

The second bit is the name.parts_of_speech field, which changes things like plural, past tense, etc. Much more trial and error there.

I had a script to do this which I could have made target civs for you but it got broken with the 42.xx update and some global name changes.

>Been working through various cases of fading information now that we have loads of data being generated for artifact locations as they move about the world, especially locally. There are six levels of knowing the location of a held artifact as it stands: having it yourself, seeing somebody else holding it at a location with your own eyes, hearing from somebody that somebody was holding it at a location recently, hearing from somebody that somebody has it (but not where), generally knowing in some legendsy fashion that it is said to be held by somebody, and not having any idea. The knowledge fades over a course of weeks and years while maintaining longer-term reputation effects, and it also has to constantly work in any new information and so forth according to their time stamps (at the individual, site gov, site culture and civ levels). >Has nothing to do with ethics
It has SOMETHING to do with ethics. The only mechanics in the game that differentiate one kind of butchering product from another are material value and ethics. Perhaps there's a default a default ethic applied to adventurers regardless of any civ affiliation. If it were the dwarf ethic it would also explain the restriction on crafting with their bones.

I tested this extensively, I literally grabbed wild animals with dfhack and tried to eat sapients.

If a corpse has item.flags1.dead_dwarf=true you can't eat it, regardless of your ethics.

You can take control of a dwarf with vanilla ethics, kill your best friend or parent, toggle this flag off, and eat them in front of your family.
>>
>>160635207
Okay, so that's likely to be the flag that is checked to determine whether a butchering product is "kosher" or not. It doesn't suggest that ethics aren't what's in play here. Ethics and the need for adventurers to eat and drink (and, consequently, the restriction on eating intelligent creatures) were introduced at the same time in .28, it wouldn't be surprising in the least if that included the assignment of a default ethic to adventurers. It's the only known mechanic in the game that causes creatures to discriminate between dumb meat and smart meat. That item flag appears to be how they discriminate.

Like I said, you can literally take control of a wild animal, have none of the civ related stuff, and still can't eat a sapient. Having ethics which can and do eat sapients like gobs and elves doesn't allow it, outsiders can't, a wild monitor lizard can't.

I don't understand why they have that mechanic when there is no option to get over it via talking with your companions or something.
>>
>>160639837
Toady is building a mythological world simulation first and foremost

The fact that you can play it is ancillary at best.

In other words, he doesn't add things in respect to gameplay for the most part, he mostly is just trying to get things to be more realistic. People crying is more realistic, so he has that even though it's broken, and will fix it later.
>>
>>160640314
I mean I get that, but I still would like to see some options for character development, even if they don't directly impact my stats. Like, it'd be nice to talk about my trauma after seeing my companion die and have the person I'm talking to cause me to stop crying with some consoling words. There is even a "consoler" skill if I recall correctly.

>>
>>160640772
Can you use dfhack to look at the ethics of creatures you don't control?
>>
>>160641091
You can pull up the same screens but ethics are tied into the raws section via entity links, they show up in entities as well, which show up there with the civ_id and such.
>>
>>160641260
Okay, then why ought you be able to see ethics on a creature with no civ when you can't see them on a creature that does have one? If a default ethic assignment were taking place and applied to outsiders as well as civilized creatures then there's no reason any civless creatures would be excluded from that.
I take it civ_id -1 indicates lack of a civ? And it applies to outsiders as well?
>>
>>160640592
I agree with you. I wish all of Toady's autism had gone into making a really great game, and not a fair-to-middling fantasy simulator. But hey, it's still pretty cool, and I bet all the stuff you mentioned in your post isn't very far away relatively speaking

IIRC it was just 40.24.
In any case, I don't know that it was/is a bug. It never showed up in changelog, and the only time I've seen Toady mention it he was pretty ambiguous about the intended behavior, and whether the restrictions had ever been intentionally coded or not. We know that as soon ethics were a thing any creature the player controlled seemed to be following the dwarves' ethics regarding the use of sapient butchering products (in most cases, at least), and then they weren't and then they were again. And we don't know if Toady's agency was ever involved in any of it.

But it seems to be working so far! It's very fiddly, but this should take us a long way as artifacts get more interesting (during the magic and economic releases, etc).

The tension is high and the air is thick with bloodlust. It is time to commence the final round of the tournament. You've all been patient and now I am here to delver with as much detail as possible.

We've come a long way, from an idea to a full tournament, a lot has been done and I still can't thank you guys enough for it. We've seen some upsets and we've seen some underdog clutches. We've seen fighters lose their heads and fights that finished in seconds.

Now, however, we are going to see the 15 (including Limbuk) fighters return for just one more fight. The winner of this match will be given the choice to fight the upcoming champion in an all or nothing fight for a second chance at being crowned the champion; or they may leave the arena with their life and the title of King of the Battle Royale.

Definitely! Once you learn the basics of the game, and can simple wall dwarves off underground and have them survive forever off of self sustained food and booze production, that where most people tend to ask "what now? ive beaten the game, i cant think of anything else to do". Gotta be creative son, gotta have projects and ideas, that's 90% of the game, having imagination.

My current project is carving out a huge cube of stone hanging over a lava pool, I plan to make it self sustainable habitat, smack some dwarves with supplies inside, then cut it off from the ceiling so it goes full submarine inside the lava. Has to be carved out of natural rock ofc, not constructed, else its gonna deconstruct when it falls.
Now just to make sure it doesnt have any "leaks"...

Ok guys, we have talked a lot about the new update, but I dont see many of you realizing what a big fucking addition this is to both modes (yeah, specially adv. mode), in terms of changing the gameplay forever
Now artifacts are a valuable and important thing to have, and the more you have, in any mode, the more danger you set yourself too
I can see a new and exciting way of playing fort mode, that would be to seize each artifact of the world, with npc parties, and try to last as long as you can the constant invasions of each race

Still, guess I will find out the hard way, heh.

Building it based on this technology
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Magma_piston

I can see how in the short future you might be able to bribe a kid with a toy or food to tell you where someone is, all depending on the value of the gift, his effort to occult info from you, and your personality/abilities
Its gonna be awesome, and we 'might' have it before next year

To accommodate the number of participants in the battle royale, the fight will not take place in the arena but, rather the neighboring pyramid.

The fighters file in one by one to designated spots of the "arena", all have faced another person in this fight at least once except for three; Mandingo, who was almost instantly beheaded by Coldsteel in fight 1E; Basket, who was pummeled to death by Sten in fight 1B; And Limbuk, who was supposed to compete against Sten in the first round of the tourney but, couldn't because of an entry error. He is being given one last chance to compete for his quest.

The lucky drawer for the center spot is Othmar. From the north position clock-wise the participants are; Joseph, SAF, DEXSTR, Riviere, TJD, Leonardo, Entrails, Limbuk, Esquies, Basket, Mandingo, Richie, TNM, and TPM.

The fighters start sizing each other up, most giving mean glares and a few inquisitive looks. Richie and TNM are surprised to see each other face to face, again in a fight to the death, and side by side no less. Othmar is giving nervous glances all around but, his target seems to be Smelly Ant Feet, the queen who bested him. The only person not seeming to not be engaged in anything is TPM, whom no one can really tell what he is thinking or seeing.

Once the last fighter had settled in his spot the exit was sealed in a flash of smoke and then...

**ding**

Almost instantly the fighters engage. Basket takes a swing at Esquies, which misses. She strikes again with her sword pommel and Esquies responds with a swing to the head, Basket is now paralyzed in the opening seconds. Esquies then furiously slashes the little gremlin to death... (cont.)

Two hits to the legs and Leonardo collapses. Entrails swings low at Leonardo's head and bats it across the arena over to Esquies' corner where he has just finished eliminating Basket.

Meanwhile in the north west corner. TPM flips his sword up and slashes at TNM who dodges then darts for the south east towards another fight, giving one last look at Richie. Richie looks back but, the moment is cut short by the crazed screams of Mandingo who slashes again and again at the kobold, missing every time. Richie slashes Mandingo's arm then tackles him. A ripping slash to the stomach tears Mandingo up good but, a good stab to the leg sends the dark gnome down and in pain. Richie then eliminates Mandingo with a stab to the brain before he runs to engage Esquies.

To the east, Riviere has taken advantage of the confusion and has already lopped off several of TJD's appendages. TJD strikes back but, to little avail. Riviere rips the poor spider apart and finishes him off with a blow to the lower half that leaves it split open. He turns his attention to DEXSTR who is sprinting towards SAF.

Othmar makes a beeline for his quarry, the queen, but his shot is blocked. SAF pushes through to join the fight just behind him. DEXSTR catches up but, soon finds himself on the receiving end of Othmar's axe and the two clash...(cont.)

The southern skirmish has now grown to include 4 fighters and grows every second. Entrails turns on Limbuk as soon as Leonardo is dead and the Nude Menace sprints in taking a swing at Limbuk but, misses. Entrails stabs Limbuk's sword arm, breaking it. From his blindside Limbuk manages to block a swing from Riviere who saw the opportunity for an attack. He follows up with a slash that nearly cleaves the elkman in half, eliminating him and stealing Entrails of his kill. Entrails lunges for Riviere, a rematch to the death.

Entrails, the rage fueled machine that he is, decimates Riviere. He slices off Riviere's foot sennding him crashing down. Riviere strikes at Entrails and is met with a slash to the sword arm that nearly takes it off. Entrails stabs downward towards Riviere who blocks it with his arm and loses it in the process. Another stab runs Riviere through. Entrails then delivers a blow similar to the one Limbuk recieved and Riviere is ended in the same manner, eliminating him.

Esquies, distracted by the skittering head of Leonardo barely has time to react to Richie's attack. He jumps away and charges at Richie who dodges likewise. Their fight seems to be on even ground though, Esquies slowly gaining the upper hand. A fatal error in Richie's movements costs him is arm and he is sent reeling back. Esquies charges, this time knocking over the kobold. Richie struggles to his feet and Esquies disembowels him as he stands. Richie refuses to fall. Another slash and he loses his hand, he still stands tall. A final stab to the upper body and Richie finally collapses to the ground, eliminated. Esquies rushes off to the main fight.

(cont.)...Othmar, just beginning his fight with DEXSTR has missed every swing. DEXSTR slashes his axe arm, immobilizing it. Othmar rages and charges at his opponent, tackling him. A solid smash to the leg with his buckler does quick work of the kobold's main speed advantage.

TPM and Joseph who had lost all other competitors next to them in the opening seconds decide to fight each other instead. Joseph charges forward but, TPM's skill is just too good for the elephant man. A few quick slashes and Joseph is on the ground. TPM runs off for the south but, Joseph is not dead and crawls after him.

The main fight in the middle now includes every living competitor in the Battle Royale

Othmar now standing over DEXSTR raises to strike with his buckler but, the kobold scrambles across the floor. A swing from his axe catches Othmar's other arm, disarming him completely. Othmar kicks his left hand into a pulp but, soon finds an axe in his leg and he collapses to the ground. Now at the same level DEXSTR hacks twice more, removing his opponent's left hand and rendering him unconscious. DEXSTR then places a choke hold on Othmar and begins strangling him. Othmar turns blue then eventually quits twitching, eliminated.

The melee has become a brawl and it is hard to tell exactly what is happening. There are fists swinging and sword clashing but, it is hard to tell who hits who in this fight.

Joseph takes a hit to the skull from TPM after taking a beating from every other competitor. Entrails, despite showing ferocity earlier on is soon overpowered by the other competitors. He manages to get a lucky stike on SAF but, she dislocates his knee sending him to the floor. SAF then takes her time, she bites his foot and begins shaking him about, punching him for good measure that paralyzes him. DEXSTR, crawls over to the immobile Entrails and decapitates the warrior, eliminating him and putting him out of his misery...(cont.)

TNM sprinted about the opening seconds of the melee, dodging every hit. A hit from Entrails during those opening seconds removed her leg and she was forgotten about. Still in the fight she continues swinging with her short sword. TPM eventually makes his way over to her and slashes her to death.

The fight was now down to Esquies, TPM, SAF, and DEXSTR.

TPM engages SAF after dealing with TNM only to find that the queen is quite capable. She delivers a flurry of blows that destroy the mushroom, while this is happening Esquies has begun swinging away at the grounded DEXSTR. Esquies is tired, the fight is taking its toll on his body. He collapses to the ground yet, he continues swinging at DEXSTR.

SAF having finished off and eliminated TPM begins a slow march for Esquies and DEXSTR. Esquies, releases a joint lock on the badly bruised and bloody kobold to face SAF. DEXSTR bleeds out, eliminated.

SAF charges for the elf and begins pummeling him. In a display similar to her first match against Othmar the queen positions herself ontop of her opponent and begins mashing them into the floor with her shields by first removing their helmet.

The beating is savage and quick. The elf eventually stops twitching. The arena is silent and so is the crowd. SAF looks up and releases a mighty screech that pierces everyone's ears. Once she is done the crowd erupts in cheers that shook the arena. Quite a spectacle.

Congratulations Smelly Ant Feet, you are the King...I mean...the Queen of the Battle Royale.

>>
>>160672590
Eh. It can be useful to have two different kinds of weapons, like a spear and a hammer, for obvious reasons. Having two weapons also allows you to keep swinging after you embed, but since I a doesn't actually take time there's not much point.

Though, really, don't worry about viability in adventure mode. If you survive the opening grind, by the time you're up to master+ in your weapons skill you're more or less invincible. Just do whatever you think would be cool/pleases your autism

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but yes, that's it exactly. If you really want to industrialize the decoration process you can have that output stockpile give to a craftsdwarf shop decorating with bones, which outputs to another pile giving to a forge studding with gold, etc. Or if you'd rather keep it compact and still add multiple specific decorations to each item, you can just flip the give/take on the stockpiles when you're ready to decorate with a different gem or bone or whatever. It's a micromanagey way to pimp your stuff, but it's less micromanagey than going through a long list to pick each decoration target every time would be. I do hope that option is added, but if/when it is I'll still do it the way I already do in most cases.

Now we have come to the grand finale. A lot of blood has been spilled this past week and now it must finally draw to a close. I present to you now.

The Final Match: Sten vs Coldsteel

Both fighters have been waiting and now they make their way to the ring. Sten the minotaur has come a long way hacking every opponent to pieces and leaving them bloody smears on the arena floor. It is clear who everyone thinks is going to win in this match. Coldsteel on the other hand, despite the odds has managed to come to the very end without breaking so much as a sweat; Using superior techniques and swordsmanship, his previous fights ended fairly quickly. Now we see them here in the arena one last time. Sten stands ready, axe in hand, and spit dropping to the floor. He looks up at the purple and hedgehog and bellows, "MEAT FOR THE MAW!"
Coldsteel unsheathes his new adamantine longsword and, says "This time it's personnel."

The audience is on the edge of their seat, anxious for the fight to begin and then...

**ding**
>>
>>160677931
Sorry if I sounded sarcastic, wasnt planing too. I meant the genius part in sincere way, as I never figured out I can do that, hell didn't even bother trying too.

So far only had problems using LINKs. Recent example was me having a stone stockpile linked to craftdwarfs one to produce rock pots because otherwise they would haul the stones themselves instead of using the nearby stockpile. This cause problem later (many ingame years later) when I tried to assemble books, as I completely forgot I had that workshop linked to a stockpile (didnt say on it), so I had to fiddle around for 10min trying to figure out how to produce books.

The fighters launch for the middle and Sten swings first, though it is easily batted away by Coldsteel. Coldsteel swings his blade and Sten dodges.

An axe swing comes fast at Coldsteel and he dodges but, before he can counterattack Sten has already reversed his swing; A move that we've seen in some of his previous battles, shortening them significantly. The axe lands home and the sickening sound of metal to flesh fills the arena as the blade sinks deep into Coldsteels chest. He coughs up some blood and curls into a ball on the floor, bleeding.

Despite his wounds, Coldsteel will not give quite so easily. Sten prods at the bloody pincussion first with a punch and a kick before he returns with his axe, each axe swing however is met with an arm clenching a longsword, deflecting it. A lucky axe blow makes it past this defence and lands into Coldsteel's back but, his arm is still at the ready. Two more swing and two more deflections. Another blow to the back and Coldsteel's arm drops but, he is still breathing. The little purple ball on the ground is then hacked at savagely by Sten. The battle is called after it has become quite clear that Coldsteel is not getting back up, nothing can survive that much lost blood.

Sten takes a step back to look at his handiwork, he looks pleased. He beats his chest and bellows in his signature victory celebration. The crowd responds with a mixed reaction of cheers and boos.

Congratulations Sten, you climbed the ladder and hacked it to pieces; You are the Champion of the Arena.

I knew this last match would be an upset for a lot but, what're you gonna do with RNG.

Well, that concludes the first ever /dfg/ Tournament. I will keep the google account open for a little while longer just in case SAF's manager responds to accept the offer to challenge Sten but, after a day or two I will be deleting the account and email. That's why I haven't been updating the art tab. I do have everything saved for the future and I have all the art compiled (along with all the battle logs, character overviews, and fights.) and will be trying to find a place to put it all.

If any anons wants to make a copy of the tournament rules/docs. I would do so now before it gets deleted. Especially if you want to help balance for the next tourney.

Having only been champion for mere moments Sten is already confronted by a challenger for his title. Smelly Ant Feet the Queen of the Battle Royale has rose to offer and now risks it all for a second shot.

The winner of this match will be crowned the Grand Champion of the Arena and will hold the title indefinitely until they are defeated by another Champion, should one ever arise.

The fighters make their way towards the bridge. Sten with his signature great axe and SAF with her brand new bronze shields, her weapon of choice for this match against the minotaur.

A wall is raised after they enter the designated area, then...**ding**

Sten charges at the queen and takes off one of her arms. Smelly Ant Feet then unleashes one of her famous flurries. Sten stumbles backwards trying to avoid the hits. It is not long before his heels on the edge.

The queen advances and the Sten loses his balance. Over the edge he tumbles into the lava below. Sten screams and bellows for quite a long time, his body erupting in a plume of smoke and hellfire. Eventually, the roars cease and silence once again fills the arena. The queen looks towards the discolored spot in the lava and then to the crowd who is just as disbelieved as she is as to what happened. The crowd rises to their feet and give a grand applause to the new Grand Champion of the Arena.

Congratulation Smelly Ant Feet. Through blood and fire, you have won and bested a monster in the field of battle. You are the Grand Champion.

What an intense tournament, can't wait for the next one. Will you take suggestions in some form before starting another tournament next month, or will you just see what we talk and decide yourself how to proceed?
I would like to see if the hospital healing would be possible, as in not to spawn a new champion each match, but to heal them in a hospital and send them to the next fight with the scars of the last one. Could it be even done, and would you have the patience?

It's not possible to save the injured combatant and get him to a hospital, or to build a hospital in arena mode, with healers, and to take control of the combatant and get him healed?
If other people agree that the hospital could be a fun addition, I'm sure we could make it happen one way or another.
>>
Well, this was fun as fuck.

That's kind the point of the hospital... If your spine is broken, you are fucked for the next battle.
Or if doctors dont patch you fast enough and you bleed out on your way to the hospital/get infection.
Not to mention loosing limbs, hah.

so then if a combatant does get one, we should just give him a crutch for free and send him to the next battle.
If it really is that simple, then it's very doable. Just sleep for a few hours and eat something.
Now the question is if we want to do this, In my opinion it would add flavor to the combatants and makes the final battles more enjoyable.

>raptorfeedingscenefromjurrassicpark.gif

Ok, that solves the feeding problem. This doesn't solve the injury problem. I've never used DFhack but, maybe it has something that could help us. If not then yeah pretty much everything from syndromes to upper spine injuries will fuck everything, unless the tournament had some sort of rolling elimination where combatants that die out of combat are eliminated fully. Then there is the question of upgrading the combatants skill between matches.

Ok, poof Sten is now Champion again. If it makes you feel any better, had that one anon not pointed out that I made a mistake on Sten's character overview, the final battle wouldve been different because I had already recorded that battle with Sten's incorrect stats and in that one Sten was the one backing SAF over the ledge and into the lava but, to make sure I got correct data in a correct .gif I deleted it and re-recorded the match. Also fuck me I hate how none of apps have updated in any form that isn't a glitch filled alpha. Neither dfhack or therapist.

Man the update is gonna be fun. I'm actually excited to play a town guard now since people will actively be trying to fuck over my city by stealing its artifacts in adventure mode. Or at least that better be a thing that happens. That and possibly being able to actually fight an invading army in adventure mode instead of them sitting in camps forever.

It's done.

The entire fucking 4103 elf army, the asterisk on the travel map is gone, piles of bodies littered between this spot out in the woods and the town I started fighting them in.

Whole thing is covered in like 6 entries of "A few hours ago I slew many foes..." and I had to figure out the best way to let them load onto the active map blocks without freezing (walk ahead of their path and wait, bumping into them directly fucks shit up if it's a map refresh+thousands of elves loading) and tapping the look button seems to encourage the game to continue loading, RAM use sat between 1.05 and 1.3 GB.

Now I've got a town covered in bodies and bolts and bits of army from me pegging them with their friends corpses, and an interesting little waterfall where the battle finished that I'm gonna build something on.

Well I was thinking for the next one changing some points around and standardizing how points are determined. actually

In actuality, dwarves are not singular creatures such as humans, but are colonial organisms consisting of a single humanoid body (referred to as a 'Dwarf' for simplicity's sake here), and a colony of beard strands. Dwarves and beards have formed a symbiotic relationship over the years, to the point where neither is capable of survival without the other, similar to a Portuguese Man o' War.

Strangely enough, the higher intellect, agency and decision-making of the colony is not handled by the humanoid part, but by a hive mind residing in the beard -- which goes a long way towards explaining why the dwarf's humanoid brain must be sloshed with alcohol in order put the colony into good working order, i.e, with the beard at the helm. While each individual beard strand is very small, much like cloud computing, together they are able to form complex thoughts. Because they are each rather simple, they tend to all get aligned on the same thought at once, leading to a dwarf deciding "Getting -troll fur sock- at all costs" is the only thing worth doing right now. The body is essentially a sack of meat used to move the beard from place to place.

Dwarven beard strands have been observed to attempt to bond with humans, due to a similar body structure, but such symbiosis is always short lived for the human.

"Dwarven Ghosts" are actually the remaining beard strands when the 'body' segment dies. The strands, similar to muscle memory, assume the shape of the body they once inhabited and attempt to carry out their routines. Due them just being thin strands in a humanoid shape, they appear gossamer and ethereal to onlookers, and objects pass through them by slipping past the strands. This also explains why ghosts die of old age; it takes a while, but eventually the strands exhaust their nutrient supply, being unable to draw from the dead host.

Have you ever gotten feels from a world you generated? I got some recently. Basically goblins and nightcreatures and the like rule all the warm or temperate climates, and the only places where non-evil civilization remains are the cold northlands. It just sort of hit me when I thought about how life must be like up there, a collection of squabbling city states trying to avoid a slow, cold death while the lush fields and savannas remain forever out of their reach. Imagine being a settler spending his first year in such a place, surrounded by game and edible plantlife, in addition to streams that don't freeze over for half the year, only for it to be taken away when his town is burnt to ash my innumerable hordes of foul creatures with a demon at the forefront of it. Imagine him having to struggle back to the cold lands of his ancestors and tell them that the paradise they sought is forever out of reach.

In adventure mode would It be plausible to have two player controlled characters? Not multiplayer to say but as if you just gained control of a npc the screen still followers the "main" character but you can direct attacks with both.

In hindsight that wouldn't work too well because of how the game ticks. On a scale of 0 to -100 how bad of an idea?

Is it possible to make explosives in DF? What was the deal with those flammable bolts you had going on?
>>
>>160764679
Oh god those were hilarious.

I set the temperature on the blood thorn to a fixed point so it wouldn't be destroyed when swimming in magma and shit, right?

Well, shooting people with them tended to set them on fire and make their blood boil away, but it was a bit delayed, so I'd plink a couple gobs, be shooting someone else, then FOOMPH! the first gob catches on fire, and then explosions of boiling blood start going off.
>>
>>160765231
Did you make that a bug report in the end? I remember you saying that because exploding flammable bolts weren't vanilla then maybe Toady wouldn't be bothered.

Anyway, so they were a fixed high temp? So how did you prevent them setting quivers on fire or just combusting into gas?

I was using dragonscale gear which handles my magma baths just fine, but I was working on adding in a couple of superior wood templates to make elves suck less and add some reason to make stuff out of blood thorn/glumprong, but my ammo kept burning away.

It's a mod type thing (though I wonder if dragon bone bolts would do this now >.<) but the teleporting effect was worth pointing out to him.
>>
>>160765965
Right I see, so you couldn't find a way of having the dropped item burst into flames?

Well I've done some tests agains

Out of one hundred rounds the human with the halberd won 44 times and the human with the two-handed sword won 56 times, they both had no skills.

With grand master weapon skills the human with the halberd won 51 times and the human with the two-handed sword won 49 times.

Since RNG is a big part of fights I don't think you can say if the halber or two-handed sword is superior.

I guess I should test again but this time both of them should be wearing a full set of armor, but from what I've seen in other tests, iron weapons can't break iron armor, atleast not easily, but the force of the blow can still cause damage, and steel weapons can't be stopped by iron armor.

I'll make them use steel weapons and armor next time.

>>160791398
Since .42 it's really common for animals to become distracted. More usual than hunger, as it happens to every animal and not just grazers, and entirely unrelated to injuries. Animals have hidden focus-related needs, like the ones your dwarves have. It's probably the same randomly selected needs that dwarves have, as pasturing animals in a tavern will stave off distraction almost indefinitely.

I had to do some tactical cave-ins on the first cavern layer because I hit a lake and didn't want to break the symmetry. I was going to establish my fort in lowest caverns, near magma, but the first cavern has marble in it so I'm probably going to dig here. Just waiting for the lake to drain away.

Would I be correct in assuming that hunting combat reports are showing correctly (the crundles, draltha, giant mole, etc)? Or are those animals trained? Is the fighting at the top of the list going on with the war dogs and nonhunters with the reacher and/or titan? If so, their combat reports would be higher in the list.

In DF, you make your own fun. It's a simulation, the fact that you can play it is secondary as far as the creator is concerned. Yes, the hunting is reporting correctly, it seems. The animals besides the giant bats and dogs are wild. The reacher and titan fights should be where those marks are, they happened months ago but are already listed as 'no recent announcements'.

Weirder still, going back further into the combat log, from before I copied the save into the new pylnp, opponent messages are gone, too. In this pic, after the cave ogre, there's no mention of what the dwarves were fighting. Just page after page of the view of the dwarves.

Spam old characters? That is to say, retire, unretire, retire, unretire, retire, unretire, retire, unretire etc. Aside from that and what you mentioned, I don't think you can get history to move quickly.

Whatever you do though, you should probably expect to be disappointed. World activation doesn't work as well as I'd like and probably not as well as you'd like. I did once have a former adventurer get appointed as a dwarven civilization's diplomat or something though, so there might be something interesting happen, but in my experience bandits don't tend to do a lot.

Ok, I remembered some science I meant to do a while back.

Was trying to tell a story while riding a minecart, it uh... didn't end well, and my armor got bashed up so I repaired it and then decided to do some testing.

After setting all the gear to artifact quality (6) and the artifact_mood+artifact flags to true I can confirm that gear is not damaged by combat and other such impacts.

Being bashed by the cart (which has another cart inside) put a couple of x marks on my gear before, after artifacting it up: 0 wear, 0 wear timer, just bruises to me.

Embark somewhere with towers and goblins, preferabky several goblin civs and more than 1 tower for maximum fun.

Remember that seeking fun is pointless if your approach to defense is to just wall/bridge off entrances and fill the place with traps. Just slap a barracks at some of your fort's entryways and get that steel production nice and early so you can equip the 5 or 10 axe lords you should have by that point.

What is fetid muck and why is it making trade caravans get stuck at the edge of the map and die of starvation?
>>
>>160832035
If you were a trade caravan, would you travel through something called fetid muck?

Any way I can use wheelbarrows for dumping stone? Or are they for stockpiles only?
>>
>>160832035

Those ppl in your picture... Are they American?
>>
>>160834027
stockpiles only. Why do you want to dump the stone?
>>
>>160834940
it's a quantum stockpile
>>
>>160832035
Traders don't have to eat or drink.

So...I've been wanting to get into roguelikes, but /rlg/ seems like a bunch of idiots, can somebody help me?
I only have DF and cdda as backstory, and I really liked both
>>
>>160820747
Nope, nostalgia
If you miss adv. mode in .34, you are right tho, but its a temporal thing we must suffer for the progress of the game's sake
It'll all eng good in the end anon In 2 decades
>>
>>160838315
why was .34 adventure mode better?

You muthafackas forgetting about dungeon menshi?

>urge to catch-tame-kill-eat anything
>Dumb and awesome moments in each chapter
>feels
>adamantine

Its like you dont husbandopost about senshi 24/7 anons
>>
>>160838451
aparently, it had a more realistic quest system, and progress felt more real
I can bitch too about the actual rumor system (pls Toady, fix it with the uncoming artifact arc), but that doesn't mean it was better
>>
>>160838803
It's already on my to-read list, shit.
>>
>>160838803
Sadly, it's very short. How long until the rest of it comes out ;-;
>>
>>160839119
fuck, Now I realize that Dungeon Menshi is exactly like Dwarf Fortress
We even have to wait for it to be finished

>>160839095
Best manga you'll read in some time
bretty good and waifuable characters, sincere moments of brother-sister love, you learn a fuckton about cooking, and style is precious
>>
>>160835369
Then why did they die? Their corpses and all the shit they brought to trade was left in the fetid muck. I couldn't even retrieve it either.
>>
>>160841171
There are any number of reasons they could have died in an evil biome with evil weather. I'm not playing your game so I don't know. What I do know is that the only creatures that ever eat under any circumstances are citizens of player forts and player-controlled adventurers. Merchants, visitors, invaders, diplomats, prisoners, and the many npcs you'll encounter with adventurers will never touch a scrap of food and will never drink a drop unless someone puts a full mug in their hand.
>>
>>160843320
when will this be fixed
Its what putts me off the more on adventure mode, breaks all the inmersion
>>
>>160838141
First off /rlg/ are elitist assholes that hate fun so don't listen to them. If you have no experience whatsoever I would recommend dungeons of dredmoor. It's fun, quirky, not too hard and it's got graphics (though if you play df then graphics probably don't matter too much)

however, if you want free I would recommend Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (dcss) it's significantly harder than dredmoor and less quirky but still really fun. And obviously I recommend getting the demo of tome4. It's fantastic. You can also check out /rlg/'s pastbin on what to play it has some good suggestions. Good luck!
>>
>>160843573
Hey there! Toady here.

I'll never fix it. Bye!

>Statue of a muskox? This sounds pretty cool.
Oh my god.
>>
>>160843573
I don't know if it ever will be. If you think forts and big settlements are slow now, imagine what it would be like if each npc had a slew of needs counters running with every tick and their own personality dependent needs-satisfaction algorithms running to determine which needs to meet when and how to meet them.
>>
>>160844136
Im not waiting for that update in a short time period anyway, but DF is gonna require much processing power than that in a few years
Just this rumor storing mechanic for the new update is gonna be a little tax on many people's computers
>>
>>160843921
yep, I swear dwarves are more complex than we think

Such a morbid artwork doesnt happen completely at random
>>
Sup guys, been about 6 years since I played the game. How big can fortresses get now? 500-600 dwarves?

I remember you could only get about 60 before FPS death, but now that the 64 bit version is out, it should be more.
>>
>1 piece of leather regardless of animal size = 1 parchment/armor/etc.
Jesus Christ Toady.
>>
>>160847237
one guy posted the build with what he got up to 523 dwarves in a large setting (5x5) or so
that is considered pretty brutal by usual standards
>>160847270
ikr
>>
>>160827924
I make it a point to issue every one of my nonmilitary dwarves a buckler and shortsword.
Or lacking a good metal industry at all, shields and spear.
>>
>>160847237
i can get around a hundred, without going below 40. Still lacks multi core support, so cant really expect much,
