So out of a lineup of 22 characters, you have exactly 1 black person – Lucio. And YES I get that there are other characters who are visible minorities – Symmetra, Pharah, Hanzo, etc. But what about McCree and Soldier 76, who are both from the United States? Or Tracer, who is from the UK? Or Widowmaker, who is from France? Or Mercy, who is from Switzerland? All of these are countries with diverse populations! Black people live in all of these countries! Coding all of the Western first world nations as white is problematic as hell. (And no, Widowmaker does not count as a PoC because she’s blue.)

So with all of that in mind, it is doubly problematic that Lucio – the only black guy – is a black guy from the slums. And sure, he’s from the favelas in Rio de Janeiro. And sure he was “fighting the man”. But the core concept was “black DJ from the slums who stole things”. And when your go-to backstory for the only black guy is “poor thief”, that is super fucking problematic. The stereotype of black people as thieves and criminals is the reason why real actual black people get profiled by police and followed in shops and stores. And the fact that the video games industry is more than 87% white makes all of this even more problematic.

Okay, I finally booted up Sombra and tested her.

She seems pretty good to be honest. Shit damage, but the zone control she gets with hacking, her general mobility and the fact that you can totally fuck up Rein/Tracer/Genji seems to make it worth it.

I'm guessing she'll be Ana 2.0 and be called shit for a month even though she's perfectly fine, and then Blizzard buffs her even more putting her into the ridiculous category.

Watching other Sombras play, I'm going to guess the main problem that your average Sombra pubber will have is that they'll try to solo shit instead of moving with their team and zoning people out with her hacking skills.

Time spent hacking is arguably time better spent killing someone on a more damage-oriented hero. She needs a lot of set up time to achieve less than what other heroes do. She suffers from defence hero syndrome.

The bigger problem is that they try to use stealth to engage, when it's actually a positioning tool.

She really needs small buffs, even if it's a slower spread or 0.2-0.3 sec faster hack.

I used to be a spy main in tf2, so finding dead angles to set up key hacks isn't that hard to me.

I think that you want to save hacking for health packs, Reinhardt and flankers.

Health packs is a no brainer obviously. You want to control the space during your downtime.

Reinhardt is that one character that you can't just shoot dead, and when he's hacked his whole team crumbles.

The range and auto-aim on hacking makes it easy to shut down flankers with.

If I were to buff something, it would be to let her hack and shoot at the same time. You can't do that right? I forgot to test.

Again, in high level play, they can be shot down with good aim and a snappier alternative to hacking - flashbang. Health packs and Rein are good options, as is any hero with a hefty HP pool and reliant on abilities. Rein, D.Va, Hog, Ulting Winston, Bastion, Mei, there's a few.

You don't want to do that before an engagement is the thing. It's basically after every team fight, but in low and mid-level play the concept of a team fight is a muddled one. There's not a lot of downtime because people trickle in to some degree.

It helps, but "crumbles" is an overstatement. Besides, you need to get the drop on Rein and that's easier said than done against a deathball comp.

I check everyone's profiles in all the downtime before the game, holy shit you would not believe how many people are Genji mains, the number is staggering. Something like 50% of all players and 80% of all "mains" I got from low gold to low diamond, and even more in QP where the matchmaking isn't so strict.
