Been reading Deardrops and going with Kanade first. Really enjoying the VN and so far I think it's much better than Kira Kira which I've read this summer.

I can't speak for the original Japanese very well, obviously. But even after a translation, I can see how the overall setup might be a turnoff for some people. The big theme throughout most of the scenes, and indeed the game itself, is conquest. In most of the scenes, the heroine will put up some resistance at first, often voiced with, yes, a monologue. At some point, though, they break. That deep, calm inner monologue breaks down into something a bit more... unhinged. Let's just say there's no real way you could mistake it for "calm inner monologue". Did we play the same game?

Even with that overarching theme, though, I can't even imagine how you'd summarize the scenes as "disgustingly generic". It might be easy to just skim the lines and say it's all "it's just girls losing to cock" but it's done with quite a lot of lavish, loving detail in the narration, and some of the public displays are downright ingenious in their setup.

The game focuses on the process of cracking through a woman's resistance to make her succumb to the pleasures of the flesh, and it does so with fervor. On the one hand the "lack of variety" might be a turn-off, but it really is a fetish game - it knows what it's about and executes it without missing a step even once.

A quarter is a pretty big exaggeration, but it IS the longest scene by line and character count. Aru complains that it was repetitive but I blame that on the lines dedicated to moans and SFX (of which there are a great deal!). When it comes to proper prose, though, there's actually a distinct change of feel from beginning to end.

I'm glad all I have to do pan SFX to make sure they sound :good:. The initial step of translating them "accurately", I think I'd lose my mind too.

I'd argue that merely existing in an established genre does not make a specific, single work within a genre "generic"; rather, it takes failing to explore any new territory whatsoever within said genre to be slapped with that label.

There's enough, uh, "creative public setup" that I'd hesitate to label Kuroinu as "generic". There's also a surprising amount of thought put into the setting and events; for example, Vult's reasoning for betraying the Seven Shields Alliance is actually quite thought out and political, and he expresses some rather interesting philosophy at certain points in private with the heroines. It sets the stage for the majority of the game's content in such a way that feels believable in-setting, which honestly went a long way towards overcoming my initial inability to suspend disbelief.

Well, I've seen only 2 scenes of onnakishi, but at least that part was "imagine generic onnakishi getting turned into sex slave by generic villain", I could tell what she's going to say next and what will exactly happen next with very high accuracy.
And other heroines didn't seem to deviate from this, at least all their introductory scenes were displaying zero deviation from their basic archetype.
