Which battle are you talking about? From the time Ike gains control of the mercenaries to when he gets the Begnion army behind him are Chapters 8-17.

In Chapter 8 they have them surrounded in their fort. He can't retreat.

In Chapter 9, they attack a small fort on their way to Gallia's capital. Given the fact that Lethe and Mordecai single-handedly wiped out all the enemies that were giving him trouble earlier, it wasn't an unreasonable decision to not detour, giving Daein more time to catch up to them, rather than take on the small force ahead of them with Lethe and Mordecai's help.

In Chapter 10, they attack a small prison to gain more soldiers. Technically you're "supposed" to sneak through so you don't have to fight so many people.

In Chapter 11 you have to fight the Daeins at Port Toha, because Ike decides to be a dumbass and alert them. What a Gary Stu, rght?

Chapter 12 you get attacked by birds, 13 you fight with the aid of the Apostle, and then 14-17 you're fighting small groups that the Apostle hired you to fight.

At no point did he go on the offensive against Daein without having an army to back him up.

I saw my friend's dad playing FE7 on VBA like 12 years ago, ended up finding it in a used game store the following week, so I bought it myself.

I remember the only save on there was starting at Ch.16xE, and I ended up losing every unit except Canas and Lucius by Ch.19, making it unwinable.

Thats a rough one for me. I loved Awakening because of the visuals, enjoyable cast, and literally tons of old characters and weapons appeared. If I wanted to create a cast of SS characters and use them I could do that by chapter 5. Any of my favorite lords could be paired up and fight together, etc.

The biggest problem is that Awakening SHOULD have been the end of Fire Emblem. In my opinion it would have been a great farewell but instead served as future direction, which is not good.

Well, that will help, but only to a certain degree. With how the plot was set up, there is no way that children could have fit into Fates' world and made any kind of sense. With the sheer number of supports in the game, the quality of the support conversations inevitably suffers. They create the supports because they knew they wanted the children first and wanted every male to be able to marry every female (for the most part), and they work backwards from there. The design philosophy itself leads to problems that more devs can't fix.

Now, maybe if they hadn't rushed it and cut out 90% of the 600 pages of original script that Fates had, maybe the story could've been great.

The same design philosophy, the one of wanting to appeal to the maximum amount of players possible, is what led them to make two separate paths (besides being greedy). They are afraid to commit to one style of gameplay after the success of Awakening. So why do it? They made two separate games, promising two vastly different types of gameplay, and blanketed supports, children, MyCastle, the works in all of them, to get as many people who like at least something in the game as possible. And what happened? No one was fully satisfied. People who played for the shipping were annoyed that the game got in the way of their pairing and castle-building. Hardcore FE fans felt abandoned and replaced. And those in the middle just get mediocre of both types of features.

If they would stop being afraid to make something that not everyone will find something they like in, then they can truly focus on making a game that may have less in it, but those fewer aspects are much more solid than they would be otherwise. The game, for what it is, would be better.

That's my take on it, anyway. I don't hate Awakening or Fates, I actually quite like them for what they are, but I feel like IS is scattered on what kind of game they want to make.
