SP doesn't use Windows. He uses Linux and Mac, so naturally those get better support.

Because you can use a mouse that is part of your OS to use it rather than having it capture your mouse and have it not even work properly in Windowed mode
>>
>>160114528
Won't happen. The only way for it to be a first class citizen is for SP to start using it. Otherwise it will always be an afterthought. He can't even test it and will just rely on random people to do it like he always has, which is partly why RA has so many issues. He makes a change, doesn't notice the problem caused on his end and only does when users find out.

How do I access the eshop on 9.0-9.2?

I'm trying to update Animal Crossing: New Leaf so if I don't need the eshop to do that then updating it without the eshop would be fine as well

I've tried doing it with the code.bin shit (http://loadcode.projectpokemon.org/) but it did not work
>>
>>160116808
Wrong thread, fuck
>>
>>160115089

What you should be asking is why these changes almost never cause a regression on either OSX or LInux but they always do on your special snowflake toy OS, Windows.

Newsflash: it's because its OS sucks and doesn't conform to standards, the users are illiterate and the devs that code for its OS are not all that much better either.

Bubbles and safe spaces don't stop people from saying other things either, they merely keep you from hearing what those people are saying, just as byuu is ignoring that man on twitter so he never sees his posts

I know emugen often complains about how people want guis for things because command line is simpler.

I had the experience of trying to use a command line program today. Here is a comparison of GUI vs command line. The goal was to extract attached fonts from an mkv file.

Command line: dl prog, extract to dir, move mkv to the same dir as the prog, rename mkv to something easy to type "fe.mkv," open cmdline from that dir, type "mkvextract help," help is unrecognized command, go to website documentation, scroll through 5 pages, find that i need to type mkvextract attachments (source-filename) [options] (AID1:outname1) for 5 different fonts, but i don't know the ID or the internal name of the fonts, find out i have to go use mkvidentify to find out each name and then remember them long enough to type them in to mkvextract because Windows command line doesn't allow you to just highlight and ctrl-c because its command line is built for the 18th century. Give up.

GUI: dl prog, extract to dir, open prog, drag file to prog, check the fonts and hit extract, it extracts them.

Don't let anyone tell you a command line emulator is worth using.

guys please I'm at the edge of my wits and I don't know where to go from here. my ps3 and ps4 controllers were working just fine before but now when I plug them in the just blink endlessly and no program recognizes them but windows tells me I have a controller plugged in. I've reinstalled drivers and software in general tried different cords and controllers but still nothing. any ideas for me to try next? I'm on windows 8.0 and I can't think of any other information to provide.I just want to play some god damn video games.
>>
>>160144631
Definitely nay to that one.
>>
>>160144914
Maybe their batteries are dead. Once had my PS4 controller's battery at 0 and all it did was blink its faggot little bar when I turned the PS4 on but wouldn't do anything even when it was plugged in until I left it charging for like 30mins
>>
what's the best option for emulating netplay to play mario party 2 with friends around the country?
>>
>>160145171
I'll try plugging it into the ps4 and letting it sit for a while but it controls the ps4 just fine as it is.

probably PJ64 1.7 with AQZ netplay input plugin. I heard AQZ doesn't work on PJ64 2.3, but never tried.
>>
>>160145284
Then it probably isn't the battery given mine wouldn't even do that when the battery was at 0. That was the one odd guess I could make, hopefully someone else has a better idea. I don't get why reinstalling the drivers didn't work. My guess would be it is something software related on the PC itself though, like something changed that caused driver reinstall to not work.
>>

>>

You have to make sure everyone enables fixed audio timing, when using netplay.

Fixed audio timing makes the randomness deterministic so that everyone's RNG seed(s) are identical.
>>
>>160146004
I appreciate the input nonetheless, I'm trying anything I can at this point.
>>160146295
I've restarted a couple times now and I'm letting the controller get some more charge just in case. what software are you using. I'm using ds4 right now, and I'm just about ready to try that adware ridden garbage for the ps3 controller at this point.

also while we are at it whats the preferred version for final fantasy 4. I played it and 5 as a kid on the snes version but my data got deleted half way through each time. I figured I'd pick up the best version if I'm gonna start over.
>>
>>160146468
With FF4 it's probably Advance with some color adjustment to make it less bright. Or you can go with the DS if you don't care about even remotely the original experience.

If you're a hardcore purist you could get a fan translation for the original FF4j (not the easy type from the US)
>>
>>160147239
ds is a little much, but the actual original had too many translation issues. for some reason I didn't realize ff4 had an advance version. thought that was skipped for some reason.

Any 1440p fags here? How does that high of a resolution benefit RA shaders at all, especially for high-res 480i stuff?

Also, for the Stella core in RA, At least when I play River Raid, as the screen scrolls before the game starts, the scanlines appear uneven. The shader in question is a flattened CRT Geom GLSL.

Is there a way to set a unified gamepad button layout for menu navigation in RetroArch? Thing is I use different button configuration for each core I'm using and whenever I quit a game and want to select a different one, from a different system, it always ends up being a really confusing process since each button does something different each time.

I'm having trouble emulating a PSX game on my PSP. The game in question is Um Jammer Lammy. The problem that I'm having is that the game loads perfectly, but certain sounds are missing, specifically the sounds created when Lammy strums her guitar.

Is anyone familiar with this problem? Is there a fix? If it helps I'm running the latest version of Pro-Nightly's CFW.

I don't understand why people assume that CRT TVs had a perfect 4:3 ratio. CRTs don't really have a "native" resolution, a slight variation in the timings could alter the ratio significantly. It's not like changing the resolution of the gameboy.

There's also the problem that creating pixel art for non-square pixels is challenging. Drawing small circles for instance wouldn't work very well. It's exactly the same problem we have when we do non-integer nearest-neighbor scaling. That might be why some devs said "fuck it" and targeted the native 8:7 resolution instead. High end TVs would let you tweak the CRT to square the pixels if you wanted to (although I don't remember anybody doing that back then).

>>160111792

What's the rationale for 16:13 anyway? Why not 26:21?
>>
>>160174107
The 16:13 bullshit just a midpoint, looks like.
4:3 = 16:12, and 8:7 = 16:14.
>>
>>160171489
Mostly Nintendo appeared to definitively assume 8:7, don't pretend there aren't other games correcting for the TVs the console was actually intended to be used on. You're replying to a chain that starts with an image example of a very popular game that did for fuck's sake. I strongly doubt the Chrono Trigger port on the DS has the 8:7 oval moon or a fucked up intro pendulum that'll also result.
>>
>>160174681

Ah, I didn't see it that way, I just attempted to average them and I got 26:21.
>>
>>160174869
I'm not pretending that there's no games that correct the assets to account for the 8:7 to 4:3 thing but there's also some that don't so you can't categorically say either of them is right especially when your only rational is "the devs are always right" when those very same devs contradicted themselves or brought you shit like the gameboy player.
>>
>>160175154
Oh I see. My mistake, I thought you were taking a different position.
>>
Thinking about it why is the SNES the only console with such an AR problem?

Many other console output have non 4:3 output resolution yet I never heard of anyone ever trying to play genesis in 10:7 for example (I don't think there's a single game on the system that would even look right at that AR)

>>
>>160161154

>>
>>160175704
You can make an SNES-like argument for the NES which also assumed a pixel squareness it never got. Unlike the SNES I don't think it's all that possible for a dev to correct it except with large shapes just because of the pixel size. Shit, the NES also had a lot of assumed cropping (not to mention coloring) that varied a ton. IIRC the assumed screen area was a 32x30 grid of 8:8 squares, correct me if I'm wrong. That would be an even weirder 16:15 ratio.

Post-SNES consoles like the PSX had output modes that really took the stretching into account to an extreme degree, where if you tried to play at their ratio you'd be looking at some kind of squished IMAX shit.

I can't get the Saturn emulation to work with Mednafen. It simply doesn't open when I drag any .bin/.cue file over it. I've tried multiple different files, so I don't think it's an issue with bad rips, I have the correct BIOS files in the proper directories, and I have the right emulator build (9.39.2) on a 64-bit machine (I'm aware the Saturn core is x86_64 only).

Could anyone help me here? I've tired following tutorials and I don't know what I could be doing differently that others can get it to work but not me. I have an earlier build of Mednafen (9.38.7) I use to run PC Engine/PC Engine-CD games that works fine, so I think I know how to use the program.

Assume I'm retarded.

how the fuck do I crop this shit to not have blackbars on the bottom and top of every single psx game?
>>
>>160176194
The generally assumed area of the NES is 256x224, but that's not nearly the whole picture. The console's usable area is 256x240, which the console pads (with the current background color) to 280x240 before giving to the TV, which crops by a varying amount on every side, because fuck consistency.

Anyway it's "generally" 8:7 padded to 5:4, so the pixel shape is actually gonna be pretty well preserved when the final image is stretched to 4:3, at least compared to the SNES.
>>
>>160163009
>Not knowing what "pixel aspect ratio" means

It's funny watching people argue over what DAR to use when it's the PAR that actually matters, and the fact is that NTSC SNES always displays with a PAR of 8:7 on displays that are 4:3 due to how overscan works.

Look it up. Higan has been displaying SNES with 8:7 PAR this entire time.

I do know that most of the port were lazy 1 pixel to 1 pixel and reduced the viewable area but if anything it proves that nintendo went with the easiest solution at the expense of everything else, which if anything helps corroborate the idea that they were lazy with SNES and just did their art with square pixels in mind and didn't give two fucks about the stretching on consumer screens.

amount of overscan is TV dependent, it defines the video signal length which is visible / not visible on a specific TV. It has no effect on PAR which is console specific. For a given dot clock, you have a console-specific PAR and with that, a TV-specific number of pixels visible on your 4:3 screen (where 4:3 is approximately the ratio of the width and the height of the TV screen area.

The way I understand it games are always hard to crack because there's billion ways you can integrate the protection in the game code, triggers that only activate under certain conditions and you can make some parts of code/resources unwrap only when needed. This obviously requires some effort on the devs part too.

Indeed, the taggant system was designed for this very reason.

>The way I understand it games are always hard to crack because there's billion ways you can integrate the protection in the game code, triggers that only activate under certain conditions and you can make some parts of code/resources unwrap only when needed. This obviously requires some effort on the devs part too.

As I was discussing with a ex Team Bondi game dev on the weekend at a demoparty, yeah, the problem with protection is you have to be *extremely* careful with how you integrate it in a game. Too weak, and crackers have no problems. Too much, and the game will slow down. Just like what happened with GTAV when some idiot dev tried to use Arxan on too many game scripts in some patch which later had that protection lessened.

So yeah, it comes down to the game dev's effort too. With decent APIs in modern protections these days, there is so many ways you can do triggers. And selective code obfuscation/virtualization.

Some are not as damaged as others.

I guess it just shows where the line is where people stop valuing their history. People don't really care about SNES box art enough to come together to make a project to preserve high quality scans of at least Fine graded boxes. Maybe they'd do it for their favorite games like FF6 or CT but not the dregs of the SNES library. It just isn't worth it to them.

The ROMs on the Chrono Trigger PCB have a '95 date on them. The PCB is just dated to when it was designed. All of these games use the same PCB:

So I'm replaying MGS2:Substance, the game runs fine at 60fps most of the time, however it does have some slowdowns, mostly durning cutscenes, or if there are some effects (explosion effects at the fortune fight, the rain effect on the tanker, sometimes the coolant spray too). Is this a plugin issue, or is it just that my setup is weak? Pic releated.

Also, I'm using a logitech F510, can you fiddle with the button press sensitivity on this thing? The game uses it for rifles, like the Ak or M4, where if you just lightly hold the square button, it just aims, but doesn't shoot.

Its more than that, it does antidebug/checksums/antidump/import table obfuscation/resource file obfuscation/product activation.

Its based on VMProtect 3, yeah.

>How the hell does it "encrypt" code in RAM? As far as I know it's just a VM that turns a x86 instruction into like 100 VM instructions.

Self modifying code. Some DRMs will reencrypt and decrypt its own code on the fly. Plus there is the added bitch of trying to decipher a completely new VM architecture from scratch.

Pretty much, completely obfuscate the VM handlers for each op and your golden. And obfuscate the VM output too while your at it. Who gives a fuck as long as its "secure", amirite?

Rockstar had this bite them in the ass once with thier Arxan obfuscator on GTAV PC. Obfuscated too much shit and game logic would slow down, lol.

>How much of the system's resources (CPU, RAM) is used for the DRM to operate?

All depends on the DRM, no one AFAIK did a check with Denuvo and after it being cracked. Then again, CPY's work is not complete since iirc the vm handlers are all there, they just neutered it a bit to make it somewhat usable without the host DRMs too.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obfuscation_(software)

Modern DRMs have engines that disassemble host code and reassemble it with mangled bytestreams. Like junk instructions, spaghetti code that jmps/je's all over the place randomly, putting code in random places, all done in the name of slowing down reversing.
>>
>>160308190
What about VM state? They fucked the code but the VM state must still transition consistently, or at least have certain key transitions that actually enable the game to function rather than serving as a red herring. Correct?
>>
>>160308534
Correct, there is *many* ways to completely fuck up your code on a ASM level and still have it functionally accurate, so the VM still will work properly. How that is done is a DRM author's trade secret, of course. Same goes for DRMs that don't use VMs but use plain obfuscation. (ie. Arxan)
>>
>>160307787
Denuvo wouldn't be popular as a product and patent sold for actual money if it weren't at least a partial solution to that common DRM problem. It probably runs decryption in parallel on a separate core to not impede single-threaded execution so much.
>>
>>160308764

This is what I mean. What if you tracked the state of the machine, marked those which actually matter, and figured out which instructions caused those changes.

>>160309223
Well it's a VM, right? It must have operations which change stack and registers and whatnot. You could log those changes... I imagine delta debugging could be useful in finding the exact set of instructions which are crucial for the game to work.
>>
>>160309532
Thats exactly what Reloaded did for SF3.
>>
>>160309561
Man that's cool as fuck. Still, this approach isn't working so well with denuvo, is it?
>>
>>160309703
yeah, CPY certainly dealt with VMs before with Denuvo's baby brother, Securom. And decent debugging tools now exist in the way of x64dbg. Not 100% sure why people aren't going the VM devirt route. Maybe people are content with memory patches?

I seen a recent NFO where Skidrow slagged off CPY for this, though the new Skidrow certainly shouldn't be saying shit for all its stolen cracks... (which is a fucking shame, the old Skidrow people in the Amiga and C64 glory days will be spinning in thier graves)
>>
>>160310073
>Not 100% sure why people aren't going the VM devirt route

This is what I'm trying to figure out here. To me it sounds like there should be a solution that will apply to every single Denuvo game automatically unless they change the VM.

I read a ton of PR stunts claiming some hackers gave up when faced with Denuvo but I just can't believe that bullshit

I'm starting to think that too. Not sure what remains of Reloaded these days. Razor seems a shadow of its self in its warez division (after doing its Battle.net reversing for the first SC2 release). Not sure what happened to Fairlight either.

What do you mean by "just"? VM based obfuscation is the most complex technique, it takes months to completely study it to the point you can write a recompiler/emulator and now that VMP 3.x removed the handler table probably even more than that. Not to mention this can't be done by some two bit teenage cracker, it requires you know the theory behind compilers and the obfuscation of every individual handler. How many people have you seen unvirtualize a modern VM protection these days? I don't think anyone has ever done this for an x64 one.

Besides, the VM only serves to protect sensitive parts of code, you know, all that stuff that sets up the protection before the OEP is reached, the antidumps, CRC/CPUID checks, license checks, ingame triggers and virtualized in-game functions that you need to restore. I heard a game can have hundreds of such functions virtualized by multiple instances of a virtual machine and there are two variants of the VM, the older VMP 2.x and 3.x one. I don't even know if such functions and triggers can be identified statically without playing the game, otherwise good luck because you'll need to play through completely to find them all. Perhaps this is why CPY just went with the pseudo keygen approach, it's just easier to generate a valid license than hunt for hidden checks like a retard. I know the top scene groups probably did remove such checks from many games in the past but these days it looks like they can't be fucked.

>>160304708
The code has to be decrypted before it's executed, while it probably does encrypt some stuff, encryption is not the point of such protections. Code encryption only makes things more difficult in the sense that you need either perform some killer static analysis so you know how it's decrypted or break the exact moment the code gets decrypted so you can study it.

>>160306301
This ain't much different from the previous protections, it's just that the obfuscation got more complex.
>>
>>160306675
>>160307056
They only obfuscate functions that aren't performance intensive so the difference isn't noticeable. The functions that rarely get called (but are still vital so the game can't function without them) are good targets, so it might affect level load times for example. Basically anything that isn't called often during the actual gameplay. Apparently Securom protected games took quite long to reach the intros after you launched them because the protection had to do its shit first.

>>160308956
Tracing is painfully slow and it looks like someone discovered some new approach that's going to make it hard or even useless because every trace is going to be from a different instance of the VM doing the same thing: http://www.lancaster.ac.uk/staff/wangz3/publications/trustcom.pdf

>>160310073
That skidrow crack is hilarious because they're trying to pass it off as if they completely rebuilt the code. The exe was completely unprotected and the protected .dll you could just reproduce yourself because of how little it did.

>>160310073
>>160310490
I think it's just that all good crackers retired (there has to be a point where it stops being fun, starts being too dangerous or real life kicks in) and there's just nobody to take their place because the facebook generation is okay with buying games or simply doesn't have that spark of curiosity in them. See how many people around you don't give a fuck about how technology works as long as it does. Even if you're smart enough to crack AAA game protections you probably have excellent career opportunities waiting for you these days.

So I've been messing around with Nintendo 64 emulators and Zelda Ocarina and Majora's Mask.

How come Dolphin is actually better at emulating those two games than any other Nintendo 64 emulator?

Upscaling any of those games breaks some stuff like textures and models, even on Gliden64 and Glupen64 those games are still full of glitches.

Not to mention that Dolphin actually uses less CPU and GPU (even with the CPU overclocked to 200%) than Project64 and the rest, Retroarch specially uses like 50% of my [email protected] CPU just to play Majora's Mask.

Yeah, for some odd reason no one will know, none of the different chips for the N64 are ran in a different thread. Instead, in the N64 scene, this never happened for some reason.

Yeah, no one really cares about how things work anymore, I remember when I was a kid opening stuff up and having a electronics set to mess around with circuits and things.

Nowadays its all facebook this, and twitter that, and caring about things like social justice. I think all these weird languages like Javascript are doing a disservice too as nothing really low level is done anymore and sadly no one gives a shit how their code works on a low level.
>>
>>160368865
It's too difficult to care about low level. It doesn't work as a human mind works, but in a totally obfuscated and hyper-complex manner.

Human society will reach a crash point when a mid-scale catastrophe happens which causes a partial breakdown of society and no one knows how any hardware works except 2000 engineers who were employed at random corporations. Everyone else is "push butan copmtooter turn on!!" level, including myself, and we cannot restart a tech driven society without those who design the hardware and understand it at a basal level.
>>
>>160368865
What really pisses me off about DRM and people these days is that they either shrug it off like yeah whatever or are willing to accept it as long as it doesn't inconvenience them.
>>
>>160369821
>>160368865

I'm a low level dev and I wouldn't want to do anything else. Of course only a minority of devs care about that nowadays but I think it has more to do with the high influx of "high level" folks rather than low level engineering dying. It's just that the barrier of entry for high level is significantly lower.

It's a bit like saying that "nobody listen to classical music anymore", I'm pretty sure there are more people who listen to classical music right now than at any other time in history but it gets overshadowed by the more popular modern genres. Basically if you're comparing the proportion of devs who are comfortable with low level devs then it looks like we're dying breed but I'm sure the absolute number has never been higher.

We'll always need people to design and implement the hardware and we'll always need devs to write the drivers for that. Well, at least until the singularity.

Right, I've decided to start a bit of a project.

I want a 'box'. I want it to sit next to my TV, plugged in via HDMI. I want it to have a wireless controller with a not-shit D-pad that charges over mini/microusb.

I want that box to have access to a full library of games from the Atari 2600 to the Dreamcast, maybe as far as the PS2/GC.

I want it to have no other purpose than playing retro games, and I want it to have a UI/OS that reflects that.

I'm thinking my options are... build a PC. Anything I'm missing that's easier?

>I'm thinking my options are... build a PC. Anything I'm missing that's easier?
PC is your best bet, and choosing parts for a PC and building it really isn't difficult. Pretty much any desktop i3 will allow you to run accurate emulators up to an including the 5th gen consoles without the need for a discrete GPU. Even the recent laptop/NUC i3s should get the job done, but I haven't been able to test this.
If you want to run Dolphin and PCSX2 then you should get the highest clocked current i5 that you can afford along with almost any recent graphics card, but at that point you're so close to having a legit gaming PC that you might as well expand the scope of your project and get a GTX 1060 6GB or better.
In any case you'll probably want to go with Windows for the OS since the best emulators for some systems are still sadly Windows only.
As for UI, you should read http://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Frontends and also keep in mind that RetroArch has it's own selection of GUIs, though there aren't cores for everything you'd probably want to run. You also might want to check out KODI if you'd also like your device to double as an HTPC.

>>160383989

Do you guys suck at reading comprehension or something? The GTX 1060 is only if you want to build a computer that's good for PC gaming in addition to running PCSX2 and Dolphin. Otherwise you'd probably be fine with pretty much any discrete GPU to come out in the past few years.
>That's the Nvidia Differenceâ„¢
Sadly AMD doesn't offer much competition to Nvidia in the $200+ GPU market. It's even worse in the CPU market where Intel just has better offerings at almost every price point for lightly threaded applications.
I really hope Zen lives up to the hype because actual competition will bring prices down and make things better all around for consumers.
Remember kids, fanboyism and brand loyalty only ever fucks you over.

An i3 with no discrete GPU for up to and including 5th gen games. This can easily be accomplished for less than $400.
An i5 with a low end GPU made in the past few years for PCSX2 and Dolphin. This can be built for about $550-$650 depending on which i5 and GPU you go with.
An i5 with a balanced GPU for PC gaming in addition to emulating 6th systems. This can be done for about $750 or more, again depending on which i5 and GPU you choose.
These prices are just rough estimates made by making some adjustments from some existing parts lists I have on pcpartpicker.

There's a difference between corporate shills and people able to understand how licenses work. If the authors of those software packages didn't want their code used commercially, they wouldn't have used the GPL.

>>160402069
how do you make ffmpeg core loop and why can't u save a cfg for cores like this and also the image viewing core.

>does Retroarch have online?
Yep
>and would that online have an active Street Fighter / KOF community?
There's no community at all
>>
>>160405442
No one said anything about not understanding the licenses. Understanding that the corporation can do something is different from refraining from condemning them as evil for doing it.

We'd need a 60FPS video to decipher what you mean exactly.

>want to get in on the RAM usage memstry
>do a quick check of my current usage just to make sure there's not a process siphoning all of it which could warp the results
>Firefox somehow managed to not be a fucking shitter and stayed under 3GB usage
Not even kidding but at this point I'm not even surprised when I check and that thing is using 12+GB
>foobar2k that I installed yesterday to dick around with foo_gep is using 700MB

I love the fact that it says "Media player with simple UI and low memory use" yet I never came close to that in any other media player outside of actual bugs.

Sounds like a problem with the plugin then. I've had fb2k running for a few days, have thousands of songs in multiple playlist, and a few different plugins installed and it's using <12MB.

If you want to think that three options is too many for people to handle and an attempt to confuse them in to buying the more expensive option, then there's nothing I can do to convince you that you're wrong, even pointing out basic facts.
