Which game and chapter are you having most trouble with?
And as for getting good, try to calculate how much damage and hitrate nearby enemy units will deal to any units you put within range of them and how well your units will fare against them in counter attacks. Always check for weapons the enemies have that can possibly exploit any weaknesses your units have, like beastkillers against your cavaliers. Also check for enemy skills as well and know what they can do (especially for lunge, seal skills, blow skills, counter, countermagic, beastbane, and chance based activations skills like luna)

It's hard to give specific advice without knowing which faction you're playing, but my strategy has been to lure enemies with a tanky unit in defensive mode with someone else to reduce damage taken, then swarm with attack stance guys in order of range -> melee -> range -> melee or the inverse if it's an archer. There are exceptions like the counter archers in Conquest but overall it works pretty well if it's just killing enemies that's hard.

The counter archers are easily dealt with by using Xander with Siegfried, Corrin with a Kodachi, or Effie with a Javelin. And maybe Leo if he's tanky enough and doesn't get doubled.
And also you should still beware of seal skills and anyone with lunge while using that strategy.

I know I don't speak for everyone here in /feg/ but I only have played Blazing Sword, Radiant Dawn, Awakening, and Birthright. This, it has potential if it's done well. Children and marriage need a proper explanation. Outside of that, S ranks om their own are fine if they just give battle bonuses rather than children, and are good encouragement to think more about formation and party building.
Custumizable Avatar needs to either be truly custlmizable like FE12 in which starting class and more portrait options can be changed, rather than a special snowflake class. If it's gonna be the Lord I'd at least want it to allow me to choose a peraonality that changes dialogue, even if it doesn't change the outcome of the plot.

To be honest, the way supports build up in the current system sort of sucks compared to the PoR system. Units from different classes find utility in different parts of the battlefield, and requiring units to be near each other to gain support points makes it harder for units of differing roles to support.

With PoR models units will be marrying each other way too soon and it will be prone to everyone getting the same pairings. A big reason why supports in Fates and Awakening are very sameish is because writers take into consideration average players will only ever see one or two support lines for each character they use, meaning they have to get rhe unr's quirks across in a every support. Ironically I think a model similar to Radiant Dawn could also work.

Choosing between Arran and Samson isn't as big a choice as path choosing, nor is it as pointless as Shura's fate.
A comparable situation would be if we had to choose between getting Gunter or Flora in mid-game Conquest, or between Yukimura or Izana in mid-game Birthright.

I did, and I'm playing on Hard/Classic like was recommended to me, since I'm pretty seasoned with this type of game.
