Boss abusing is a pretty safe bet. You can also set a unit at a choke point, unequip them, and have an enemy attack them to gain 1 exp per hit which will also help level your staff users.

So Awakening and Fates are not so great when compared to the older titles, but it's not just because they're new. It's because they're trying to appeal to so many facets of the playerbase that they end up doing most everything weaker as a result. The marketing strategy for Fates shows this best, they made two entirely separate games in the same world to try and pull everyone in, and made a third game with the real ending, and all three suffered as a result.

For the games to be good again, there needs to be a return to form. IS needs to realize that if they want to make a good game, they can't appeal to absolutely everyone. They need to come up with an idea and make something solid, and stop worrying about alienating people. After all, if the reason people like Fire Emblem, it shouldn't be because they only like the eugenics, or the castle building feature, or pairing up all the characters, or making an avatar. It should be because they like what's at the core of the game: a turn-based strategy RPG. As long as that is stlil there, people who actually enjoy Fire Emblem for what it is will probably be interested.

The enemies are low level so your units will only get 10-20 exp per kill where as mozu will get 30-40.
