Maybe instead of starting him off as a perfect hero. Maybe have him be incredibly cocky at first thinking this will be easy, only to learn that this will take some effort. Or maybe have him scared at first, because Eggman's kind of scary as are his robots but Sonic will need to overcome his fear to save everyone. Something like that could go a long way towards making a stronger protagonist

Sonic the Hedgehog is like a living manifestation of Chaos, Speed, and the Wind. And through the combination of those three things comes Freedom and Adventure. My problem with the way Unleashed and Colors handled Boost was that they just gave you a full meter right from the start and tons of opportunities to refill it whenever you want. It should be more of a reward for doing well with the regular moves you already have, like GHP - although, GHP's level design didn't give you enough time to react to the sudden burst of speed. They should have also segmented it like in the Wii version of Unleashed, it feels tighter that way.

Kirby hasn't gone 3D except for once. Kirby's also one of the most consistently good video game franchises. I think there's some merit in keepint it to 2D. There's still a lot you can do with it, and it doesn't stop certain stories from being told. You can have your big ambituous stories and keep it relatively safe in terms of gameplay. I liked Colours story actually, I understood the humour that didn't appeal to me was cause it was a kids game and all that jazz, and was a nice little contained story about Sonic and Tails and Eggman, was neat.
However it was then the standard for Gens and Lost world to have the same plot.
