It's definitely worth the peace of mind. Also it says right in the guide "If you have already hacked your 3DS before and have an EmuNAND based CFW setup, just follow all instructions while on SysNAND. Your data will be transfered from EmuNAND to your new A9LH install at the end."

Try installing the .cia. If it doesn't work, that would mean it needs 11.x++ for the game. You can update (I think), but you can't use NTR anymore. Change to Luma if you want NTR to work.
