"That day, right before I was deployed, my airspace assignment was changed. Initially, my squadron was assigned to the stable eastern front. That was changed to Area B7R. "The Round Table" where casualties were recorded at a fearsome pace. It was also the place where I met him. It was just two planes - him and an Eagle. And yet our lead force didn't stand a chance against them. I knew that he was good and that it was going to be bad for us, but there was something else I noticed. He hesitated. A vulnerability that can be exploited. I was certain I would win. The pilot was still young, and he had yet to master the rules of combat. But in the end, I was shot down."

In no particular order. I honestly don't know the names to anything in Joint Assault, but it also has some good tracks. In the Zone is really silly, but it just clicks when playing the game for some reason.

It was just an odd part to use a lyrics song in, but I thought it appeared multiple times, no? That and the short instrumental thing that plays after the final mission. Too bad that version didn't get released or extended.

"Every time I flew with him, his skill stood out. He was unstoppable. He was cool-headed and proud. A combat professional. Demon Lord fit him perfectly. Maybe the man was blessed by the goddess of war. Before long, everyone had taken notice of him. More and more would show up to watch him go off on sortie. Mercenaries or maintenence crew, it didn't matter. People wanted to burn his image into their memories. Hell, they weren't the only ones."

It's a Kommandogerät, or Command Device. A mechanical computer that calculates optimal settings for mixture, rpm, throttle, turbo gear etc. for a given setting selected by the pilot via the power lever. This makes operating the aircraft relatively simple as the pilot does not have to bother with three or four levers for the different settings and only has one, as shown in the picture.

Installed on all Fw-190s and probably some other planes that had the same engines.

You'd see similar things on old Porsches and other high-end cars, though somewhat simpler because there are less parameters.

"Sorry about the accomodations. It goes with the business. I'm not active during the day. Back then, I was a shadow assassin. An "escapee killer". Given the order, I'd even shoot down my own comrades. I received an order to take down deserting craft on that day. It was a typical assignment. But...something unexpected happened. My target was no new recruit, but a top ace of the Belkan Air Force. And he just had to go and run straight into the chaos at the Round Table. The man was sharp just like the rumours. But that wasn't the problem. The problem was that the mercenary team of Solo Wing and him were there. Thanks to them, I lost my target. I figured the best I could do was to take them down in return. Of course, that was where my luck ran out."

Takeoff and landings are 99% in bar landing gear and animations, and by virtue taxiing is in as well. I get tons of fun out of trying to execute perfect landing because it's quite easy to get your approach shafted by crosswind, and the F-16's undercarriage is small enough that you might flip if you land at a bad angle. Hard to get a picture of the other feature we have added in which are contrails, since you can't actually control your plane and move camera at the same time lel.

Since I last talked on stream I managed to fix the issue with aircraft not being able to accelerate vertically upwards but the unholy speed loss during turning and looping is still there though I'm considering keeping the flight model as it might be a good idea to emphasis energy management more in multiplayer. (you bleed off about 300 knots of speed just doing a 180 with afterburners, if I remember correctly)

Next up, hopefully a virtual joystick for the KBM players because it takes upwards of 10 reasonably sized- mouse drags to complete a loop, writing a software network bridge to make a singleplayer mode, and more boring networking stuff.

"I was just a child when the stars fell from the skies. But I remember how they
built a cannon to destroy them and in turn how that cannon brought war upon us.

War was an abstract idea; nothing more than a show on TV. As a child, I only
saw it as something the happened in some far-away land. Until that final day of
summer...

One day, while on my way to school, I looked up in the skies. A sound like
distant thunder. In the blue skies far above me, contrails drew dizzying
circles around in a crazy waltz; a battle in the beautiful skies far away. I
could not tear my gaze away from them. A deafening roar. Sharp silouettes
appeared, as if to graze the hills, and streaked past me. The fighters played
the cat or mouse in turn as they climbed swiftly into the sky. One fleeing
plane fell out of the sky, spiraling and spewing orange flames to crash by the
cape.

The same cape where my family lived.

Now they only live in my memories of days past. The victor circled around to
confirm the kill, and on his craft there was a large number thirteen,
emblazoned in yellow. I will never forget this.

The Allies retreated across the ocean before the onslaught of the enemy. Our
little town in the heart of the mainland fell into deep isolation."

-Unknown
>>
"The war seemed to unfold in the blink of an eye. I don't remember exactly when
the forces from the West occupied my town. I was too busy scanning the skies,
day after day, waiting for Yellow 13 to reappear.

Before I knew it, everything changed. The language the taught us at school.
Our friendly local sherriff "disappeared," and was replaced by foreign MPs.
In the beginning, some people secretly tuned into broadcasts from North Point on their parabolic antennas. But, as time passed, the broadcasts
no longer came in. Maybe the satellites were destroyed. All non-military
computer networks were shut down. Gasoline was rationed to civilians. Though
we lived in the 21st century, we were reduced to using crystal radios and
horse-drawn carts.

I moved in with my uncle in town, who used to be a taxi driver. Out of
gasoline and out of work, my uncle did nothing but to drown himself in drink.

I earned my keep by playing the harmonica in the town bar. The one thing I was
good at. I'd play for sullen occupation soldiers in exchange for their charity
in loose change and used the money to support my uncle and myself. My uncle
trash-talked the barkeep, who catered to the enemy soldiers. But he never
refused the money I brought home.

As for myself, I had a crush on the barkeep's only daughter, who was a little
older than me.

Another day passed, yet still no sign of the fighter plane Yellow 13 in the
skies above our town."

"If the Demon Lord hadn't appeared, our lives might have been different. For me, it wasn't about flying or ideals. Most of all, it was about him; My flight lead. Our mission was to escort the heavy command cruiser that was to act as transportation for the organization. And the Demon Lord appeared, as if to block our paths. I will never forget his overwhelming power. One-by-one, my comrades were shot down, and then the mother bird we were supposed to protect. We survived after the fight. We left our organization and returned to the ground together. But, those whose hearts are in the sky will always return to the sky. He was one of them, and so he left, even though his wounds had yet to heal. And he died there, never to return to me. But I don't blame anyone. The regret and suffering that remained after that battle were also what he had given me. They're among the precious few things he left behind."

I just realized, while all the variant Squadron interviews (Missions 3, 10, and 16) are with their number 1, the consistent interviews (Gelb, Espada, Galm) are with the wingmen. Do you guys think that was intentional? If so, why do you think they did it like that?

Those missions all involve the two sole members with an equal matching (Gelb and Espada are 2v2, and Galm is 1v1) with the interviewee referring to losing their lead and how it affected them (Gelb 2 having been traumatized from losing his at the hands of Cipher, the tragic lament of Espada 2 losing her lead and her lover, and Pixy fondly recollecting his former lead before his betrayal and attempting to make amends. I don't know if it's just surface level stuff or if there's more to it, but the more I think about it, the more I'm convinced it was intentional.

Oh man, I need to pick one? Well, it's either the F-15 for being so effective that its reworks are still being used to this day, the F-22 for its cool-factor or the Gripen, because it's just a great plane in general and because it's the only fighter jet i've seen irl. The Flankers would be candidates to if I could only decide on one. Sorry for the late response btw.

<<Kill or be killed, Cipher. A World with No Boundaries taught me that.>>

<<Yes, you aren’t the only one to grow up on the killing fields. War is a cruel parent, but an effective teacher. Its final lesson is carved deep in your psyche. That this world, and all of its people, are diseased. Free will is a myth. Religion is a joke. We are all pawns, controlled by something greater. Borders, the DNA of the soul. They shape our will. They are the culture, they are everything we pass on. Expose someone to borders long enough, they learn to hate. They become a carrier. Envy, greed, despair… All from borders. All passed along.>>

<<You can’t fight nature, Cipher. Wind blows, snow falls, and the strong prey upon the weak. PJ tells me you see your aircraft as a tool. Something that saves lives, a means of justice. Now there’s a pretty thought.>>

<<Exquisite. It’s spared you the burden of all the lives you’ve taken.>>

In non meme terms, the Russians haven't shown the ability to bring the avionics and engines to the table that would really give it true 5th generation performance. In addition, it's a stealth aircraft, something Russia hasn't had experience with before.

In short: the avionics and engine tech hold it back

If we are all being honest, then we can admit some mistakes were made with the last model, and it is important to own up to and admit those mistakes and learn from them.

I blame the instructions the last model came with, being upside down hieroglyphics instead of proper English, so I sourced my own instructions for this model. Should make it easier.

So it turns out that I do not have any plastic cement left to actually build the model.

So I guess I have to hold off or use a heat gun and try to just mush em together, weld plastic if you will. A lot of the pieces are fiddly, so I might burn my fingertips and that's dangerous.

A better use of my time while I'm sick and not working as much is probably fixing computer. I managed to crack this bad boy open.

Just played through and beat the mission. Some quick and unorganized thoughts:

It's hard to tell at a glance what weapon I have selected. I know you're probably trying to not ape Ace Combat too hard, but they have a damn good system for showing what weapon you have selected, how many you can fire, and the status of the recharge. Even HAWX outright stole it.

Sounds could all be more punchy. That's probably not your priority right now, but the that I'm getting this nitpicky shows that a lot of this is damn good. May be one of the known issues, but I'm not sure I even heard missiles firing, or any sound at all other than engine noise and explosions.

I really like the way the planes fly. They feel like what Ace Combat might fly like if the planes were remotely physics based.

External camera needs a waterline W mark so you have a reference point when trying to use the gun in third person.

When you change weapons, even among compatible weapon sets like MSL, XMAA, SAAM your target changes and it gets confusing.

Nitpicky visual effects things:

The missile effect is a bit hard to read. AC6 actually has a similar problem. The smoke trail is highly visible, but it's difficult to tell where exactly the missile itself is. Legacy AC had much less fading between the exhaust and smoke, and the exhaust flame itself was pretty bright. See pic related for an alternative take on the AC6 trails, ironically from DCS.

Tracers look a bit strange because of how slow they are and how thick they are. I know it's a hard compromise to make when it comes to keeping these visible at a distance. A trick I've always used is that I make the tracers pretty small, but I scale them up as they get further from the camera.

All the explosions look too yellow. They need more orange and reds.

Motion blur should probably be off by default. The effect is way too blurry, and while I actually have a soft spot for motion blur, it really needs to be toned down to be barely noticeable.

That's a repost from /agdg/ but /aceg/ anons might have thoughts on it.

>>159784634
More thoughts:

You made the hangar transition loading thing work a lot better than the WIP thing you had before. Looks good now.

Proportions on a lot of the missiles look kinda strange and off. I know this is another super nitpicky thing, but it's something that stuck out to me.

Gun projectile velocity seems pretty slow. I'm not sure what you're using, but for reference the real life M61 has a muzzle velocity of ~1000 m/s. I don't know what Ace Combat uses, but it felt faster than that this feels kinda like WWII machineguns. Maybe that's what you're going for, but it's something I noticed.

The bullet drop is a nice touch. It made me realize AC never had it.

Flares need some kind of cooldown or limit. If there is any of either, I never noticed, but they're too effective for how easy they are to spam.

If I come up with anything else I'll let you know. Also post it on Tumblr so I can reblog it.

Awesome I appreciate the very detailed feedback. A lot of valid points you've made.

The weapon recharge status is something that is planned somewhere in the roadmap. Depending on how much people complain about it I'll probably make that the priority then.

I've pretty much placed most your feedback on the trello board and will tackle them one by one. I'll probably prioritize the gameplay elements that you've pointed out such as the target swapping and waterline marks etc.

working on that tumblr post right now senpai, this demo day has the worst timing due to the election though

Actually flares don't actually do anything. (I forgot to disable it for the player whoops)

I made the game deliberately easy because making it hard would just be frustrating for others who are not that good this kind of game.

As much as I would like to include all that, it would be way too complicated/unnecessary for an arcadey game that is similar to Ace Combat.

One night; a spirited group made their way into the bar, chased out the sullen
army grunts, and commandeered the place. Even I knew who they were. The patch
on their sleeve was the mark of the Proud Air Force.

A loud-mouthed, middle aged man went around announcing each pilot's results
for the day, and his running kill record. For those who exceeded five kills
a thorough toasting and soaking followed. I believe it was their custom to call
a pilot an "Ace" once he shot down five planes.

After completeing the day's review, the same guy, the squadron adjutant, went
on to announce, "And now for our leader's results!"

Everyone turned around to look at the quiet man who sat alone; strumming a
guitar. I found myself drawn to the music from his guitar.

"Our Yellow 13 bagged three more today, bringing his new tally up to
sixty-four kills!"

With a tenative smile, the man with the guitar turned to me and asked me to
accompany him on my harmonica. I brought it up to my lips and he started a new
song. I'd finally found him. But by some fluke, it was my father's favorite
song; the one he used to play at the end of each day..."

"A freeway under construction in a wheat field outside of town. When they
started construction, I remember how the mayor bragged about it even though it
would completely bypass our town. The freeway became the occupation force's
makeshift runway, and the unfinished tunnels their bunkers. This was their
base. They were the elite flight squadron, chosen to protect the Cannon.
Ironically, the same cannon that was created to shoot down the asteroids became
a catalyst to the war. But when the Allied attacks no longer came, the squadron
was assigned long-range missions that took them to distant battlefields.

I thought of the words I would use to confront him and bided my time. Although
I harbored these feelings within me, I could never get close to him. His
wingman was always by his side. Dispite having a gentle demeanor, I could tell
that the wingman would never allow danger to get near Yellow 13, even on land.
The pillar of their group, 13 exuded an air of invincibility. He always chose
to fly a five-plane formation. He was a man who prided himself, not on his kill
record, but on his record of never losing a squadron member.

It's difficult for me to describe just how good Yellow 13's flying was. But I
witnessed it once from the ground. The lead plane of the five plane formation
should have turned the same arc with the same timing as the others, yet only
his plane drew sharp contrails.

His heart felt compassion toward the weaker enemies he downed. Someday, if an
equal appeared and challenged the limits of his skills in a fight, he would
bear no resentment about being shot down. He said this himself.

And so as time passed, I found the goodness of a home in their company. Leaving
them was no longer an option for me now."

Trump has repeatedly said he'd listen pretty heavily to what Pence has to say. I didn't mean it in the sense that he'll have 'true' power but neither did Cheney and he managed to influence things. I'm just a little worried that all the stuff about him being pro-LGBT will vanish now that he's in office. I really do hope I'm proven wrong.

He said he's leaving the matter up to the states anyway. Just email your congressman. Literally first thing I did when I heard Rubio won as Senator is email him on the gay marriage issue since it's really the only issue I don't agree with him on.
>>
>>159818841
Yeah, even so. I'd prefer strong federal protections on that to states rights. Also, marriage isn't the only thing I'm worried about - I don't like the idea of being able to discriminate based on sexual orientation at all. Of course any non-essential business should be allowed to refuse service to anyone for any reason, but not having it as a protected class is just... kinda shit, frankly.

Yeah, I'm still experimenting with a lot of visual effects of the game.

>>159817139

Cheers anon. I assume you're talking about Project Wingman

I'll have to improve the GPU performance of the game. As of now it does run rather poorly across the board.
>>
>>159819119
yeah, project wingman. Shit's great, it's like playing AC6 but even better. It's definitely a touch rough around the edges but I'm loving it. The one thing I'd like is some sort of indicator in 3rd person mode for the gun when you're in gun range of where the nose is pointed. Other than that it's fantastic.
>>
>>159819119
One suggestion. The lead indicator for the gun is fine, but it needs static crosshairs that show up when firing or in range too to make aiming not shit.

The horizon thing kinda works but not really.

The principal concern in this case isn't so much the man himself as the strong possibility that the hard right elements will use this victory to push an agenda that seems to have support from the VP, who has usually been less involved with politicking and more tied to social work and other such matters

It depends on the instrument though. Pointless music info incoming:
For example, this could be the music sheet for the trombone. In this case, the violin section could be playing. The trombones just have to wait for the violin intro to end before joining in. Almost like with The Unsung War: there's a rest period at the beginning of the song for the brass/wind to let the violins play, and it takes a while for the percussion to start.
It means this song will have a gud intro. I hope.

the Secret Police dragged him off for some drunken comment he made. Maybe he
chose to disappear. I didn't have anyone to turn to, so I found myself living
as if I were a member of the Yellow Squadron.

Everybody in town scorned the barkeep for doing business with the enemy. In
reality, he and his family were members of the Resistance, gathering up
intelligence information from enemy customers. His daughter protected me, but
that was only because of my tender age.

The barkeep and his family were the real heros, while I on the other hand,
found a haven among the enemy.

Nah, m8. You started certainly from the high-point of the series. Other metroidvanias were in fact the same with little different plot and their own gameplay schticks. Still, you should really try the original platformers, without the goodness of Metroid added. Start with Rondo of Blood mentioned before.

"I should have died that day. But I didn't. I dragged my wounded body and reached ground zero of the nuclear detonations. A barren, empty land. I felt an unbearable sadness when I witnessed that landscape. There were still people living there. They were the ones that saved me. It may be true that the world has no need of borders. But would getting rid of them really change anything? The world won't change for the better unless we trust people. Trust is vital in a peaceful world. But that will never happen. I'm still on the battlefield. Right now I'm near a border. I want to see for myself what borders really mean and what their volition really is. I may not find what I'm looking for, but I still want to try. Anyway, that's what I've come to believe, and I think that's enough. Will he see this video? If you do meet him, give him a message for me. 'Yo buddy. Still alive? And thanks, friend. See you again."

I like it a lot too, and ironically AC6 actually was the first Ace Combat I played as well. I never had a PS2 (until only a couple years ago), but I was fully aware of the AC series and always wished I could play them. I was a secondary fan of the series in every meaning of the word, so when I heard it was finally getting an Xbox release I was fucking ecstatic, bought it day one, walked through the rain, and a bunch of other bloggy bullshit.

Having since played through the holy trilogy and revisiting AC6 a couple weeks ago (I was posting about it in here), it's given me a new perspective on the game. Like I said, I still think it's a good game and anybody who likes Ace Combat should absolutely play it if they can, but as a total package I don't think it stands up. It's sort of a nice epilogue end of an era to the series that goes full circle and ends up being a pseudo-remake of AC4. It's like poetry.

It's just little things that bug me about the game now having played the PS2 games. Even ignoring how cheesy and poorly written the cutscene dialogue gets, which I can easily ignore because Ace Combat stories are usually silly anyway. I wrote a bunch about my thoughts on AC6 back when I was replaying it a couple weeks ago and I don't want to write again.

It's not like AC6 is a bad game. It does a lot of really fucking cool shit that I wish got carried over in the later games (what later games?), and the game is really good at what it was trying to do.
>>
>>159974859
shitty writing is what made me fall in love with ace combat in general
and im actually thinking about picking up a 360 because of it (and other games I-i swear!)
>>
>>159975784
I dunno man, AC6's writing is shitty in a way that's so bad it's bad whenever the lady and her daughter are on screen. It doesn't cross over into the so bad it's good territory that AC5's anime characters/writing and the AC0's silly FMVs go into.

The in combat dialogue is pretty good though, and Ghost Eye is my favorite AWACS of the series.

Everything is OP as fuck in AC6. It's one of my problems with the game. When practically everything dies in one hit, in a game where you have practically infinite missiles, it takes away what little Ace Combat series has in terms of enemy variety. One of the things I like about AC5 is that there's a lot of targets that take 3, sometimes even 4 or 6 missiles to take down. It made your SP weapons have more purpose because you saved them for those targets. The limited ammunition also had you think about how you were "spending" your weapons and it made SP weapons that much more important.

In AC6 though, almost everything dies in one hit, and your gun is stupid powerful. You never think about ammo, and SP weapons are just alternate targeting methods of killing stuff, not really something you save for important targets or ration.

I hope you're listening to this Project Wingman dev.

Tackling some of the major and minor feedback from the demo one step at a time. Everything still looks rather placeholderish but I'll clean it up at a later date.

Will probably do a full video on the feedback changes.

Thanks, as much as I would like it to be as realistic as possible, it fucks up the missile navigation at close range making it super frustrating to shoot targets at close range because the missile would always miss.

There was a solution I did a while ago which i reenabled for this webm (because i wasn't sure if it actually worked or not), it's not perfect but i think does the job without compromising balance.

you going with full radiation seekers and infrared?
or just radiation with flares just because

I thought 2 was fantastic, just as good as the first to me. 3 on the other hand, I felt like was a bit of a let down. Part of the reason, to me, that the Markers were so creepy is because of how little was known of them. What are they? Who built them? Why? When?

I feel 3 answering those questions took away some of what made them so interesting and scary, compounded with the incredibly boring combat and constant waves of enemies. Parts of the game that were scary had to stop being scary for a few minutes while you mowed down hordes of Necromorphs. Then once the game was satisfied, the enemies would stop coming and you could resume being spooked. I get that 1 and 2 had dedicated rooms that locked up until you killed enough enemies, but only in 3 are you properly equipped to take them on, which removes any scare factor. If you're basically invincible, like you are in 3 once you've gotten all the good weapon parts, it isn't scary anymore, it's just space COD.

For the lifetime of the project, all spare parts and costs included. No other fighter project ever had its cost projected like that before. It's thought that upkeep on the legacy jets that the F-35 is replacing make it cheaper in the long run.

See even then the training for maintainers, pilots, service bonuses, people like me playing hokey with those 60,000 dollar parts dont even get put into those figures. And beyond that, those same maintainers refusing to re-enlist, i see where your coming from but im not putting my faith into it. i want to like it, but as an old maintainer its looking to be a really big pit for money on all sides to me you know?
>>
>>160042042
>maintainers leaving
Source? That's interesting

We've all been told it's far less maintenance intensive than the F-22 or any other stealth airframe
>>
>>160042336
it's my personal view on it, its mostly the work environment that i was trying to get at, hard work wasnt much to the people i worked with it was just the requirements that were (and still are) getting pushed on us by the department of defense. but if i find anything backing that statement besides my own word ill provide it.
sorry i get really passionate about this stuff
>>
>>160042042
>See even then the training for maintainers, pilots, service bonuses, people like me playing hokey with those 60,000 dollar parts dont even get put into those figures.
Would those figures suddenly not exist if a fictional F-36 or some other not F-35 fighter were put into service?
>>
>>160042336
didnt take long to find one
but here, most maintainers hate it and dont stay in for very long
https://www.airforcetimes.com/story/military/2015/11/02/weary-maintainers-struggle-keep-fleet-combat-ready/74870766/

>>160042783
I'm not understanding your question
but what im trying to say is, with less experienced teachers newer airmen get less proficient at tasks
less proficiency means more broken parts and incorect troubleshooting
incorect trouble shooting means more parts that arnt bad get treated as such
so on and so forth
whyen i worked on F-22 we wasted enough parts to buy 2 more planes
seeing how this plane is new, and less maintainers are staying in these types of things ARE going to happen more often then noty unless manning or engineering changes
which again require more money
>>
>>160043313
What I'm asking is why is that an F-35 specific issue, and not something that happens with every new airframe?
>>
>>160043632
because we almost always had a benchmark for new teachers, we dont have that luxury with the F-35 anymore, the F-22 had this advantage where if you previously worked on the F-117 or the F-15 you could probably work on the 22 with slight of knowledge
the 35 doesnt have that, and if you wanted to move technicians from the 22 to work on the 35 your losing hands on another critically manned air frame.

i believe the 35 started development at the wrong time personally and i think its not looking bright without a bench mark air frame

like i said i want to like it but i cant
>>
>>160043313
Like that other anon said, that doesn't seem like an F-35 problem, but a US military problem.

Also, I love how the air force was counting on getting that obsolete POS A-10 out of service to free up its maintainers

Also also
>new thread when
>>

Think of it like this: the exact same problems existed when adopting the F-15. You had nobody experienced on a plane of that complexity before.

Genuinely i believe its the change, its coming in and changing how our operations are going to work (Ive hear) and overall pushing out the A-10 which is a beloved plane. um i dont like it because im old and cant fix planes anymore.
>>
You would think with the increased reliability benchmarks, and the plethora of self diagnosis the F-35 should be able to do, it would be less work to maintain.

thats actually a problem my unit is currently having actually, the newer C-130s are making it harder for our maintainers to train new people because they dont break as much,

I've heard from sources that early n their career F-117s would easily run up in to the triple digits for maintenance per flight hour, mostly due to LO.

Is that something you can comment on?
>>
>>160046703
yes, the F-117 was a great plane except it had this problem with its skin, Instead of paint it was covered in Stickers, im not joking, so in order to change a part, load a weapon, reprogram, we had to peel of a sticker and replace them. those would become very expensive if a system went bad and we had to shoot wires for shorts, check for bird strikes or change wires. so everything we did took a while
